Whoa. Damn. My mom and I were wandering around just after noon, waiting for people to finish their acupuncture appointment in the plaza. I don't come here that often, let alone wander around, so when my mom said we should check out this donut shop I said sure, why not? At first glance it -appears- to be your very standard, minimal-strip-mall donut/coffee shop; clean but sparse interiors, simple sign. We got there at noon so like many people have said, selection will be limited the later you go but they still had my favorites, which is cake donuts and donut holes and a couple other staples (honestly if you just want a good basic donut). Got a half dozen donut holes, an old fashion, and two sugar and a glaze. Cash only, but it's cheap, and I noticed they serve fair trade coffee and sandwiches as well. I can definitely imagine this place is popular with the morning crowd. It's clean, has all the basics--for a place like this, you don't need to be fancy. Just a good, no-frills, friendly place to buy your donuts and coffee for a good deal. Now, I usually don't eat donuts often, but boy before I even took my first bite, they looked amazing. And then you bite into a pillow-y soft donut hole, all nicely glazed...gaaaawwd...I knew there was a reason I never like Krispy Kreme; not when there's such good local businesses! I loved the cake/old fashioned as well, both were moist and not dense and just the right sweetness from the glaze...mmmmm.... I am eating the rest of my donut holes as I type this. I love this little donut place. They have a good variety if donuts. They are always super busy in the early morning but their service is fast and they are on top of their things. I like to stop by every once in a while to get donuts for the people in our office near by. My favorite are their old fashioned plain donuts, so yunmy! These donuts are the BEST and it's definitely the cleanest donut shop I've ever seen. All these people complaining about little selection or there wasn't much left.....it because their donuts sell out FAST!! We live in SJ but thank goodness my husband has work in Newark so I can get my fix :) The chocolate & glazed donuts are my favorites but everything in there is ALWAYS FRESH cause they never stay in the case long enough to not be. Fortunately for me the line at Togo's was almost to the door. So I walked next door into this place for one of the sandwiches. I was pleasantly surprised. The ham and cheese on croissant was perfectly made with the right amount of pickles and onions for some crunch. I asked for "everything". I didn't even need to add mustard. This place is a very classic mom and pop store, run by a Chinese couple. Both are very friendly, making conversation; and keep the store spotless. I usually come at least twice a week, grabbing two sprinkle donuts for $1.50 and rushing out to my car in less than a minute! Very quick, simple, and cheap (although I can not say the same for the bottled drinks). Yet, where this place shines is also its downfall. You'll get the generic donuts, drinks, and desserts you can normally imagine. So do not expect something out of the ordinary as well as the shortage of donuts in the morning due to the rush. But if you happen to be shopping at Food Maxx or pumping at the Chevron across the street, I advise you to drop by. If you go enough times and order the same thing over and over, they will even prepare your order right when you enter the door. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! They don't just make incredible donuts but they are super sweet people. This place is ran by a husband and wife and they are the most sweet and friendly people I've ever come across at a food place. They remember your name and greet you with a big smile every morning. I used to come to this place all the time when my son was in preschool in Milpitas. I will never forget my first time here... I was running late and didn't get a chance to make my son breakfast so I decided to make a quick stop here and get him a donut. Little did I know that they were cash only... We get down, he chooses his donut and i grab a small jug of milk and when I go up to pay with my ATM they tell me that it's cash only. OMG I was shocked... how could i tell my 4 year old that he coudln't have that donut! And since i was running late I could not drive to the nearest ATM to get cash and come back. Well these nice couple told me to go ahead and take the donut and milk. I told them that no it was okay and they insisted that I take the donut for my son. I told them I would come back the next day and pay for it, i promised them. She just smiled and said no problem, enjoy. She waived by to my son and I left... How often do you get that!!! I honestly have NEVER gotten anything for free... Sure enought i came back the next morning, i grabbed my son another donut and a jug of milk and paid for what i owed them. I left them a happy tip and I thank them all over again. From that day on... everytime my son craves a donut, we make sure we wake up extra early to make up the time driving out to Penny Donuts. We have a business down the street so we go here a lot when we need a fast breakfast. I usually get their vegetarian avocado sandwich with white bread, no mayo. It is always super fresh and tasty (great for vegans)! My boyfriend and our employees love their donuts as well. Also, they are pretty busy in the mornings but are always fast. read more

Man I love this place. Almost everyday after morning ROP classes, I would drop by here to grab some sprinkle donuts for me and my then girlfriend. Cheap, and made by the same Chinese couple. And the icing on the cake was that I came there long enough for them to remember my order! That was like around 2008. I came back during the fall of 2010 and the guy still remembered me (by my green Acura..) and my orders! But I didn't want sprinkle donuts, got donut holes instead, and then I shook his hand and left. I don't know why I did that. I always see this doughnut place when im driving down stevenson blvd, so this morning before work i dedicated that i would stop by and give them a shot. It was about 7:15am and they were pretty empty, good for me as i was in a rush, I ordered a apple fritter, my favorite doughnut in the world, I was shocked that it only cost $1.25 and it was a fairly nice sized. So i get to work and took a bite into it..boy was i very disappointed. The doughnut was still a bit raw and wasnt sweet at all! Very fresh, pillowy soft but with substance donuts! I got there a tad late, after 11am, so a lot of the varieties were already gone--hmmm, they must be that good! Anyhow, I'll have to come back but looks like it needs to be much earlier to get a good selection. Still, they had my favorite, a chocolate raised donut--my all time fave--and it didn't disappoint. Teeth sunk into the softest pillowy donut ever. And no old oily residue taste, to boot! Got a small cup of coffee and the lady asked if I wanted cream or half-n-half. Now, that's service! My favorite donut shop. Great tasting donuts but my favorite is the egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches. This is the go to spot for breakfast in the morning before work. I'm lucky that it's so close to my works headquarters. Everytime I'm in Fremont I stop here for some good donuts and breakfast sandwiches. The best part of Penny Donuts though is the service that Ryan and Heather provide. 2 months ago we moved from Newark to Oakley. We have a business in Hayward. Every Friday we get dozens of donuts for our employees. Since we moved to Oakley going to Penny's donuts was just too far out of the way. So we have tried 5 or 6 donut shops between Castro Valley and Hayward, but were not able to find a donut shop that came close to the taste of Penny's. Now we get up another 1/2 hour earlier (3:30am) and go out of our way to have the best donuts ever!!! By the way the #1 breakfast sandwich I would get up at 3:15 for!! I am an old fashioned doughnut gal and Penny Donuts' chocolate and maple old fashioned doughnuts are my favorites. Well balanced and sweet (but not cloying!), these doughnuts have an amazing lightness on the interior and a slightly crisp and chewy exterior. The best indicator of these doughnuts' quality is that they are still good the second day! Yes, they are a bit stiffer than when they were fresh, but tastier than other doughnut shops' "fresh" options. When I'm in a savory mood, I enjoy the baked in ham and cheese croissant. A flaky, buttery and airy croissant that hides salty ham and a creamy white bechamel cheese sauce. My company buys from here. Tried the glaze and old fashion.....they're just not that good IMO. Had a donut from Lloyd's on Mowry in Newark and it tasted way better. The donuts at Penny are not light and fluffy like I'm used to. They don't taste fresh to me either. read more
