My experience here has been the same as David I's. Every morning, this is my go-to spot for coffee and breakfast. The sandwiches are amazing, perhaps a bit overwhelming because of their size (and that's a good thing). The ingredients used are high quality, tasteful, and well prepared. As for coffee, Omar always makes me one hell of a peppermint mocha. He's welcoming and very respectful to my family and friends. We end up chatting when there's time. I've been to the competition and they also have good food and coffee. I always end up coming back to Penny House though. Coming here sets off the day just right. read more

I woke up this morning out of coffee and needing somewhere nearby to just grab a cup. Stumbled into Penny House- the man behind the counter (owner or manager, maybe) was SO kind and had a nice calm demeanor. And when I asked if they have cold brew he said no but told me their iced coffee is "strong and not bitter." He was SO right- it's REALLY GOOD COFFEE (and I'm from Seattle- I know what's good ;)) Also had a solidly yummy croissant. Great place, not pretentious, nice people, good coffee. read more

This is honestly my favorite bagel spot in the neighborhood. You never have to wait in line, you can always find a seat, and the prices are great. Used yelp to find some take - out sandwiches as I drove past on business. The two sandwiches I ordered took FOREVER to make. The counter guy filled so many coffee orders during the sandwhich making process. He obviously didn't care how long we were waiting. One was a disgusting mess of thick slices of swiss swimming in a pool of mayonnaise on a kaiser. No vegetable in sight. I've never seen so much mayo on a ssndwhich before. I was nauseated watching it get unwrapped. Mine was a spicy tuna wrap. Now I like the idea of spicy tuna. Tuna can be bland on its own, but this tuna was SOOOO spicy it was a dare to eat. I was starving so I did eat it. It is now two days later and I am still SICK FROM IT!!! My system is so angry that I ate that spice bomb. TERRIBLE PLACE. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND IT. read more

This is a nice addition to the changing neighborhood of Prospect Heights. Penny House is simple, laid back, and unpretentious, which contrasts the trendier, hipster ridden cafes that have sprung up in the area. They have a grill so you can enjoy fresh eggs and grilled cheeses (my fave), as well as muffins and scones and the like. They serve La Colombe coffee, which is delicious. And most importantly, instead of Grizzly Bear or Wilco, they play NPR in the morning. Need I say more? Penny House is just fresh food, good coffee, done well. It's what more places around here should aspire to. Lastly, for those of us who wake up disturbingly early on weekends, they open at 630 AM. A true sign of a working class establishment. read more

This is a small deli like spot, in which they serve different types of sandwiches, especially breakfast sandwiches. The coffee was great as they use La Colombe. The sandwich was pretty good as well. The thing I appreciated the most was the friendly vibes that this place gives. My girlfriend and I both felt very welcomed and enjoyed our short but lovely experience there. Walked in here with my girlfriend and ordered a bacon egg and cheese. asked the gentleman where the bathroom was, and no papertowels. First thing the owner failed to mention they have turkey bacon and not regular bacon, and the sandwich was 5$.Also this was my first time here soni expected regular bacon and not cheap bacon. The total for a small coffee, an apple juice and a TURKEY bacon egg and cheese was 10 dollars. I had asked the gentleman why it was 10 dollars so he showed me. When i told him I didn't want the sandwich no more he gave me this terrible attitude and said "you already ordered it" and he kept giving me a terrible attitude after and was trying to tell me I had an attitude. I told him the customer was always right and he kept being extremely rude to me The turkey bacon egg and cheese was def not worth 5 dollars and was definitely a crappy sandwich with fat turkey bacon and cheap cheese. I recommend no one go here ever, unless you want to deal with an owner who has a terrible attitude and over priced food. I go there everyday. Great cafe. Great prices and great service. I get the spicy beef sauguage and fried eggs on an english muffin with cheddar cheese. But also try my creation, the spicy beef sauguage on a turkey bacon BLT on poppy seed bagel, adding cheddar sometimes enhances the flavor too. The owner is great and when you're a regular you get a free refill and if you forget your money you can pay him the next day. It's truly a great place to eat. I really like this place. The service is really fast if you're on the go. The coffee and bagels are always good. There's room to sit down and do some work (in an environment that's refreshingly not as hipstery as some of the other places around). And the prices are not half as crazy as they could be (Coffee Bites down the block? $4 iced coffee??) I love the coffee at Penny House Cafe, a good strong brew, consistently good, and in my mind the best in the neighborhood. They also make an excellent bagel sandwich, particularly the egg and cheese. I believe the bagels are from Bergen Bagel. You would think that something so simply can only be so good, but they really do an amazing job with it, very tasty. The staff if very friendly, they recently gave me new items to try, an excellent Lentil Soup that the owner recently started making. The space is clean, with nice chairs and tables, but is a bit poorly lit, particularly if you want to read there. I would say that is my only negative comment. But as someone who typically goes there for coffee or an egg sandwich to go, I could not be happier. read more

The veggie omelette immediately caught my eye and 4 weeks later, I'm still going there! The coffee is amazing as well!! No bitter aftertaste, smooth and sultry going down. I finally found out the owner's name, which is Omar by the way, and he is the friendliest person you ever want to meet. Really good coffee with solid free wifi. No 2 hour limit BS here so you can lounge around all day if you want. The cafe is pretty small but there's a clean and well-maintained bathroom and one sofa, 3 tables, and 2 bar seats. They serve food with an emphasis on breakfast items. Penny House Cafe is a cozy spot in a good location. I discovered it when looking for a place to meet a friend who lives in the neighborhood, and really loved it. The cafe is pretty quiet, with a nice selection of things to eat along with my typical chai latte. I should say chai latte made with almond milk. I was very excited to see that option, as I'm not a fan of soy, and prefer almond to normal milk. I wish all cafes (& chain coffee houses) would offer almond milk for all the possibly-lactose-intolerant-soy-haters like me. The gentleman behind the counter (the owner?) is very nice. I would be here all the time if I lived nearby. I'll definitely be back whenever I find myself in the neighborhood. read more
