Food options are primarily breakfast sandwiches and omelettes, with some drink specials. Settled on the Two Eggs, Hummus and Tomato on a roll ($6) as well as a Pumpkin Pie Dirty Chai Latte (#5). Got everything an about 10 minutes - lightly toasted bread sandwiching a hearty omelette, tomato, and creamy hummus. All the ingredients are cooked well, though the hummus didn't really go well with the eggs (still good enough to eat). Dirty Chai has a big pumpkin flavor, and had just enough of a kick to get me through the day. Fairly straightforward place - order up front from a simple menu, then take back and enjoy. This little spot is right around the corner from my home. I'm not usually a breakfast person, but I'd pop in every once in a while for a coffee because they make a great cuppa and are so warm and friendly. Were I feeling really indulgent, I'd get a bagel with butter. They're happy to toast them but theirs are so fresh they are perfect as they are. I'd never liked smoked salmon (yes, I'm weird) but had an OK experience when I was on vacation, tried a bit at Russ and Daughters and felt a little craving for it - so I went to Penny House because I knew they had great bagels and loved their service. Turns out, their Russian Sandwich is the PERFECT smoked salmon bagel treat. They make egg ones as well with the Salmon, but the balance in their Russian Bagel is second to none. If you're lucky enough to be hungry and in my nabe when they are open - go. If you're not hungry...take it to go for later that day. This is such a nice spot to get breakfast/lunch sandwiches. The coffee is also tasty and strong! This place is a gem as it's difficult finding places that do not serve pork. I often spend entire days at home or the office, sitting on my ass. But when I feel particularly ambitious, I walk around and find another place to sit on my ass. And Penny House is a damn good place to do just that. There's free wi-fi, good music (sans words, which is so much more conducive to work), friendly service, decent chai lattes and baked goods, and wraps/sandwiches/bagels and seriously comfortable chairs (along the wall, toward the back) to keep your ass happy. I can sit here all day and get tons done with only the usual distractions (customers flirting with the staff, sirens outside, the internet, shiny things). read more

One of my favorite spots in Prospect Heights to grab a coffee, a quick breakfast, or to get some work done. The staff here are always very friendly. You definitely feel right at home here - and unlike some of the newer coffee shops that are invading Brooklyn, it doesn't give off that hipster/gentrified/sterile vibe (not that there's really anything wrong with that). Definitely feels like a neighborhood/local spot. Their breakfast sandwiches are always good and come out fast. My favorite is the egg white and turkey bacon on a roll. They have free, fast wifi and plug sockets, although seating is limited to 90 minutes - although that's not really an issue. I also love that they have NPR playing on the radio the entire time you're there. Especially a plus on Saturdays, when the entire NPR lineup is killer! Was looking for a nice, quiet place to sit for a while, and recharge with a simple coffee and bagel (my favorite combo) before tacking the Brooklyn Museum. This was the perfect spot. Staff was wonderfully pleasant and awesome. Literally one of the freshest bagels I've had in a while. Perfectly moist and toasty. They also made one of the best dirty chai teas I've ever had, period. Didn't have to add any type of cream or sugar or cinnamon to it at all. Literally flawless. Like they've known me my whole life. Boyfriend had the breakfast sandwich and was in love. They allowed us to sit in their nice, clean quiet environment and let the caffeine kick in before heading off for our day. Great shop ran by great people. Bagel sandwiches are huge, delicious, and inexpensive... What's not to love? On top of that, service is great. The guys behind the counter are really attentive, sweet, and work quickly. Took less than 5 minutes to get our order brought to the table. My friend and i split 2 sandwiches - the BLT on a wheat bagel ($5.45) and a lox spread on poppy seed ($3.50). Both were good but I wish there was iceberg lettuce or romaine on the BLT. The greens they had on it did not hold up well to the heat of the toasted bagel and wilted/turned somewhat bitter. There was a constant stream of customers while we were there on a Saturday around noon, but even though the place is small it never felt cramped or too busy. First off: great promotional grand opening (03/6/10) - coffee for a penny?! Brilliant. Hm mm... maybe this will be the case on the next anniversary? Just sayin'... Tasty drip coffee, and a large assortment of teas. Delicious cookies, fresh cupcakes, muffins, bagels, croissants, etc. as well as a number of relatively healthier fruit/nut bars to choose from. Of course, you can also find an assortment of cold canned/bottled beverages on site (which you may not find at other local cafes!) as well as an assortment of fresh fruits. I had the pleasure of enjoying my jump-start via the delicious iced mocha, which tasted something similar to the mocha's offered by the NoHo Mud Truck (that means delicious). And as I went to leave I notices that they also offer their iced drinks in an icy blended form as well. Next time, for sure. Free wi-fi is a nice touch, and will definitely motivate me to enjoy my morning beverage and baked treats on premises, which offers a few 1-2 person tables, bar seating, and a bench out front. I'm definitely glad that the newest addition to the Prospect Heights local flavor is a nice, quaint cafe - and the location couldn't be better, considering the distance to the next closest coffee joints. I've passed by this place for years and kept saying I need to stop in. Especially since it's a hop away from my apartment. Saturday morning kitchen laziness had me throwing on sweats to venture outside. The first thing I noticed was the friendliness of the staff. My first few visit were good im normally the first early customer. Today I was not the first customer but the grill was clear I have an egg allergy so I saw the spatula had egg particles on it i asked the chef if he can wash it or use a different one. The chef took my order and said that I can wait outside and he will let me know when my order is ready. I decided to wait inside I see the chef add the turkey bacon the sausages then I watch him turn the turkey bacon with the spatula with the egg particles i said something to the chef and he says oh that's not your order then I see him remove the egg particle that was on one of the turkey bacon then he makes my sandwich and continues with the rest of my order. Firstly, to the server in the plaid fedora: you are the essence of this amazing little cafe! Now that I've gotten that out of the way, we'll move on to the important part: the review. It's true that good things come in small packages and Penny House Cafe is no different. My husband and I came here after a visit to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and were not disappointed. They have an expansive selection of caffeinated beverages: I got the Dirty Chai Latte (Chai Latte with a single shot of La Colombe Nizza Espresso - hot dayum!). It was the perfect combination of spicy and savory and had a jiujitsu-strength kick of caffeine to power me though the dreary day. My favorite part was that they offered soy milk *and* almond milk! Perfecto! The next surprise in this teensie establishment was their selection of bagels. On weekends, the flavor options expand, and thank goodness, because as far as I'm concerned, there ain't nothin' better than a good ol' fashioned pumpernickel bagel. I was tempted by the spicy tuna salad, but wasn't sure I'd like it since I'm picky about my tuna salad (too much mayo or not enough can both be deal-breakers). Luckily the aforementioned fedora-wearing man gave me a hefty sample. After my first bite I was sold. The food was fresh and delicious, the service was helpful without being overbearing or creepy, and the ambience was great (NPR playing low enough that my hubby and I could have a conversation, but loud enough that it prompted response and discussion from us). I absolutely love this place. I found it while hunting for a coffee spot open before 8 and am so glad I did. The coffee is consistently perfect and the owner and staff are soo friendly, welcoming and care about making you happy. I'm a little particular about how much milk I put in coffee and the staff was so attentive about making it perfect. Coffees such a treat in the morning it means a lot they want you to be so happy with their service! I should be making coffee more at home but can't give this coffee up.
