Is it just me they ignore? I have to have a prescription for my cat compounded here. No less than five times have they either "Oh, I don't show a record that it was ordered", or " We're out of that and we have to order it from another location". DRIVES ME CRAZY!! And the prices!! Sheesh, I already have to put my own kid thru college, I don't want to pay for the pharmacist's, too! Today was the last straw. I going to the Medicine Shoppe. They want to offer you suggestions and solutions. They do not judge you.) I go for the vitamins!! Though expensive they carry really great brands of strong stuff that beats GNC any day. They also carry zinc sulfate in liquid form! This is hard to find and I am so grateful. As a kid, I loved the smell of Mentholatum Rub. My mom would rub it on my chest when my nose was stuffed up. I was recently transported back to that time by the smell of Biofreeze, which I purchased at People's for my husband's achy knee. I like to pretend that something hurts so I can rub it on myself and get that smell. Biofreeze is one of those items that has to be kept behind the counter so you have to ask for it. They have free samples if you just need a quick Mentholatum Rub-style pick me up. Customer service is top notch at People's. I love that there is always someone available to answer my questions and provide informed recommendations (like Biofreeze!). People's is my first choice when I need anything drugstore-ish. read more

Peoples is one of my favorite lunch spots. I'm a sandwich buff and they have the perfect amount of options, its not so overwhelming that I end up staring at the menu for 10 minutes before I can decide, but there's plenty of variety. They have little notepads with all the ingredients and you circle the things you want. I love it that they don't charge extra for a croissant or extra cheese. In fact the only Up charge is for avocados, and I think that's valid. Peoples also has baked potatoes, great soups, lots of different pasta salads and a bakery case with all sorts cookies and muffins. The people are super friendly and I really like perusing the greeting cards while I'm waiting for them to make my sandwich. The prices are lower than most places, with the best deal being a baked potato for only 2.49. The only downsides are the limited parking and the cherry bars that look so excellent I continue to get them even though they're often dry and overly sugary. oh yeah, there's a pharmacy too. read more

I would walk 500 miles for a bag of Jenny's Bakehouse gluten free bread, and I would walk 500 more for a Peoples Rx sandwich made on that bread. Luckily, I only have to drive 15 minutes from work to do both. We all know the sandwiches are good and the gluten free selection is good and the pharmacists are good. There's no debating that. The best thing about Peoples Rx is the customer service. I was lamenting to one of the counter folks that the south location by my house has an embarrassing lack of gluten free goods. You know what she said? She told me to call her any morning and let her know what Jenny's Bakehouse goodies I want and she'll have one of their delivery drivers drop it off at the location by my house so I can pick it up there. People's is so Austin. I love their breakfast tacos. They also carry many things my oncologist recommends for skin care during radiation therapy. They are the only place in Austin that carries Rad-X. It's the best moisturizer on earth. Now that I am out of the cancer zone, I still use it for all my moisturizing needs. And then there's a pharmacy attached too, if you eat too many cookies and tacos. I used to overlook the awesomeness that pharmacy places like this provide. The staff at People's Rx is extremely professional and caring. Marissa in particular, took time out of her day to make sure my prescription was correctly transferred from my previous pharmacy and called to check in on me 3 times to keep me posted on the progress when my doctor made a mistake on which prescriptions I was filling - that's great customer service! I found the best hummus I've ever bought off a store shelf...at my pharmacy? Now I realize that it's a local brand that's carried by Whole Foods and Central Market, too, but hummus and prescriptions--what a combo! And yum, it was delicious hummus. I love People's commitment to bringing in local goods. I got some locally-made coffee soap one day, too. Now I smell delicious when I get out of the shower! The staff here is really friendly and helpful when it comes into questions about anything--prescriptions you've got, health issues you're having--all of it. This location is a bit small and cluttered, but it has enough to be useful and the location is unbeatable. I've always preferred going to a local pharmacy for my regular prescriptions, and People's reminds me why. read more

I haven't actually used their pharmacy because I rarely fill scripts and if I do, it's a little too far. However, their deli is fantastic. I am a huge fan of sandwiches, but I rarely buy the fixin's myself. If I'm lazy I will go to the Thundercloud near my house, but Thundercloud is really mediocre. People's Rx serves a quality sandwich. Fixin's galore. Hormone-free meat. Locally grown veggies. Decent price. Yummy sides. Even yummier desserts. My boyfriend and a close friend also claim that they have phenomenal breakfast tacos, but I haven't had one so I'll just take their word for it for now. People's Rx also has soups and I've yet to try those either. Parking sucks. Last time I was there I witnessed a small incident -- very unfortunate. There is also nowhere to sit and eat, so you can either take your food to go or eat on one of the benches outside the front of the store. These issues compel me to deduct a star. If I ever try anything else, I'll be sure to amend my review. For now, if you want a five-star sandwich to go or don't mind doing a balancing act of food on your lap (and don't mind battling parking), try People's Rx. read more

Rx: very helpful staff, they carry & offer a lot of alternative remedies for the nature-loving fools in all of us. Thank you People's! We also appreciate the natural skin care lines and general concern you put into your space. Cafe/Deli: Best deal on organic ingredients for bfst tacos in the am! My gosh, they were GOOD! Organic eggs, organic meat products (organic nitrate-free ham is hard to find!) potatoes, the usual but offer on spelt tortillas. Very tasty and very cheap~ $1.88 each! I've been coming here for over a year, and I really like it. I never have to wait long for my prescriptions, and it's a lot less chaotic than your typical chain drugstore. The employees are always friendly and efficient. They have a nice selection of health oriented food (especially gluten free) and magazines - plus a little deli in the front. My only complaint is that there could be a bit more parking, but considering their location, that's a tall order. read more

I've never felt loyalty towards a pharmacy before my first visit to People's. Homemade food (featuring a combination of local and organic ingredients such as grass-fed beef), smoothie bar (featuring trendy jungle fruits like açaí as well as local yogurt and multiple proteins), local coffee on tap (Katz and Ruta Maya) as well as many other local products (such as Sweet Leaf Tea, Dr. Kracker, Jake's Granola, Austin Natural Soap, White Mountain Yogurt). And, of course, they have a full service pharmacy with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. People's Pharmacy is set up more as a wellness station to recharge your body than just a place to pick up medicine and greeting cards. I'm sold. read more

I've been going here since I was a kid and I love this place. I generally only go when I've gone to the doctor or something or some such. The smoothies are always a real treat when you're filling your allergy medications because you're getting wtfpwned by the cedar. Oh, you're not allergic to cedar, are you? Well aren't you special? Just stick around, you will be, and you too will come to loathe the plague that is cedar! And when that happens, you go to People's Rx, because filling your prescription here is always a joy, unlike going to Walgreen's where you just sit in a damn chair for half an hour or walk around and look at all the junk you really have no desire to buy. Of course, you don't need a cedar allergy to come to People's Rx, in fact, you might just come on in for the smoothies just because they're good and you can make'm how you like'm. Oh, and they have vegan, gluten, hypoallergenic, politically correct, totally non-offensive cookies or something and some other hippy stuff if you're looking for that too :p 5 stars, because this is honestly the best pharmacy in town. read more

I've been going to People's for a while. I like their local feel and their level of service. I also enjoy the products they promote. There is however a serious issue with the Jenny's Bakehouse "gluten free" items. A local celiac group had the products tested and they came back with high levels of gluten. They made a complaint with Dept. of Health and now they are going to test the products. If you have serious gluten issues, you might want to skip Jenny's Bakehouse products for now. While People's still carries Jenny's Bakehouse "gluten free" products, they have signage indicating that the products may have gluten. I hope this all turns out for the best and no one is seriously sickened by these local products. I really liked the Jenny's Bakehouse stuff and thought the gluten free goodness was too good to be true. I don't have serious gluten issues but I also want truth in labeling. I've been using People's RX at this location for the past few years without any complaint (other than the super-strong smell of burnt bacon in the entire store all day every day), but today I had an experience that will have me moving my prescriptions to another pharmacy. I picked up a new prescription, and the cashier told me she'd let one of the pharmacists know I needed a consult to discuss it. I waited around looking at magazines for a few minutes while 3 people chatted in front of the desk/window area where a pharmacist normally does consults. I assumed they were just 3 customers hanging out and they'd move out of the way when a pharmacist called me over. After a few minutes, one of the three of them comes up to me and says "Are you waiting for a consult? I can do that right here." Grabs my prescription bag, and proceeds to talk about this medicine's purpose and the side effects it could have IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WAITING AREA. NO PRIVACY AT ALL. It was really embarrassing and came off as incredibly unprofessional. You really couldn't ask your friends to step aside for a minute and call me over to the window? Or hell, you could even talk to your friends for a few more minutes, I'll wait--as long as I need to if I can get a little professionalism afterward. read more

People's is my go-to place for all health questions. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and I enjoy supporting this local business. They are always prepared to talk to you, whether it be about a prescription, a more "natural" remedy, or just a general health question. It's amazing how many times you hear people around town say, "You should try People's." Now on to the deli - my favorite part. The sandwiches are YUM. You get to pick your ingredients on a little form...very convenient. The rye bread is sooo yummy and they always pack on plenty of meat if meat is your thing. Right now I can not get enough of the egg salad - it is delicious. Just the right amount of everything. They have TONS of gluten-free options. I'm not going to go into all my RX troubles. But basically, I think this pharmacy, and I am rating just the pharmacy portion of the business, is HIGHLY disorganized and not dependable. With this in mind I have begun to worry about the quality of my compounds. If I could get my medication in another form I would but I can't that's why I kept returning. I have monthly prescriptions to fill and I have been doing so at Peoples on N.Lamar for over two years. I have found another compounding pharmacy not near me but hopefully better. Peoples Pharmacy doesn't seem to realize getting a prescription order wrong is not like getting a sandwich order wrong..this is part of my healthcare. I won't get sick if you loose or get my lunch order wrong but I will when you screw up or just fail to fill my rx. read more

People's Pharmacy captures the spirit of Austin. This tiny little building manages to pack in a pharmacy (which supports both holistic and "modern" medicine), a sizeable rack of greeting cards, a selection of high-end chips and energy bars, a deli, a bakery, and a meat cooler (filled with beautiful cuts of grass-fed beef). The deli offers sandwiches, soups, salads, and breakfast tacos. They turn out a mean sandwich for $6 or so, using the kind of ultra-fresh, organic ingredients that both taste delicious and make you FEEL healthy while you're eating them. They have a "build it yourself" system with a stack of sheets listing all the sandwich fixings - just circle what you want and they make it to order. And with ingredients like Ezekiel and spelt bread, avocado, and chipotle mayo to choose from, if it doesn't taste good, you have nobody to blame but yourself! The bakery counter includes goodies that are gluten-free and low carb. And there's even a coffee bar with a good selection of coffee drinks and made-to-order smoothies. One time I came here and they were selling boxes of beautiful, plump figs that had literally just been plucked from the tree in somebody's yard. A couple of them looked a little past their prime, and the friendly person behind the counter encouraged me to pick out the best ones and gave me a great deal to boot. This is the kind of place that makes shopping locally a no-brainer. Power to the People's! read more

Quite disappointed for months now. I've been loyal to People's for years (17 to be exact). Recently, there is a lack of customer interest, respect, and a manager being a poor manager. I haven't even received a callback regarding my concerns that I expressed weeks ago. Until they change the manager staff, or acknowledge the issues, I'm going elsewhere... I needed a prescription filled for a topical ointment to take care of some poison ivy. I received a call saying my prescription was ready and fought the five oclock traffic to get there (on Lamar). After waiting in line I was told that the prescription wasn't ready and would have to be ordered. They did tell me it would cost $135 which I would need to approve before they ordered it. At that point I was so disgusted I told them to forget it and left. I then called my local CVS, who told me they had the ointment in stock and could call People's to have the prescription transferred, which I approved. I picked up the ointment a couple of hours later and was charged $38 instead of the $135 People's wanted. I have changed my preferred pharmacy at all my doctors' offices to CVS now. This probably explains the $399 I had to pay for the tube of fluorouracil I got from People's a couple of years ago. read more

It's nice to have an alternative to Walgreen's and CVS. Peoples is friendly, employees know their stuff, and while prices are a little higher than the mega drug stores, you get a higher level of personal service. They will advise you on the overuse of antibiotics and will offer, but not force upon you, some hemoepathic treatments for you to consider in dealing with your illness (yet never contradict the meds your doctor prescribes). Another treat is the deli, which has a total Austin thumbprint on the bygone days of the pharmacy soda fountain. They make healthy sandwiches and pastries and very delicious smoothies using the tried-and-true hippy recipes. This is also one of the few places in town that carries Alkalol, a vile but stunningly effective treatment for people with the allergies. I'll say it's akin to Drano for your sinuses and leave it at that. read more

If I could leave a review with zero stars -- or a negative number -- I would in a heartbeat. They should just rename it Peoples Deli, Homeopathic Placebos & Pet Meds and be done with it. Seems their only rave reviews are related to those three activities. The way they store their prescriptions for pick-up would be comical if it weren't so inconvenient. Their standard procedure is: 1) Ask your name. 2) Pick through a bin until they can't find it. 3) Argue with you over whether/when the prescription was phoned in by the doctor. 4) Check the computer. 5) Go back to the bin and rustle around some more. 6) Look in another area where they should have looked before steps #3 and #4. The final straw for me was when they continued to bill my old insurer after I'd given them my new carrier's prescription card. When I got a message from my former insurer claiming that I owed them $120 because of Peoples Pharmacy's mistake, Peoples told me that sometimes their system isn't updated and gets things wrong -- like that's my problem. Instead of offering to take care of it or cover my out of pocket, they just shrugged and said there's nothing they can do. Being well-intentioned is not good enough. I might as well go back to Randall's Pharmacy. At least they don't pretend to have their act together. read more

First visit to a People's Pharmacy and I'm definitely not impressed. Decent customer service although. not really friendly, unless they know you. If they know you, there are conversations (three so far) about nails and hair. The employee told me the medication wasn't ready yet but should be in 10-15 minutes. Twenty-five minutes later, "it should be ready soon, if you have just a few more minutes." I said "do I have an option?" "Not really." There are only two customers here, two pharmacists and three general employees. Thirty-two minutes isn't too long to wait, if they tell you that when we get there. read more

This pharmacy know how to take care of its customer. I was turned on to Peoples many years ago by a Austin local. I have been buying from them for years. They have an excellent selection of vita mans and the staff are always there to ask you if there is anyway they can help. I buy all of my father vita mans there and at 88 he is doing great. A few years ago before my intervention he wasn't do so well. Thanks to an excellent doctor and the array of vita mans and fish oils purchased at Peoples for my father is doing great today. Peoples has great products and snacks but I am done with the rude staff. In the past week I checked out once and the person never looked up, acknowledged me, and spent the entire time talking to others behind the deli counter. Today I returned a juice bottle and was scolded for not completely rinsing it out - I would assume Peoples would steam and sterilize their juice bottles?? Needless to say I will NOT be buying juice there anymore and probably won't stop in as often. Jenny's Bakehouse Deli has helped a lot of people with Gluten free products, I personally know people who have eaten her Gluten free products with no manefestation of sickness. Jenny has been in business for over 17 y ears and had no major complaints and in contrast,, help people who are taken off insulin after a substancial weight loss. The person who wrote the negative review had the her business investigated by the Department of Health wants Jenny's trade secrets which are not for sale. If you need to order her products for Celiac or diabetes I would considner contacting her personally until these libelous issues are resolved. When told my 11 year old schnauzer needed a compound medication and that it was only available at People's Pharmacy I thought the vet had been to Eeyore's Birthday a little late in the year. This is a "human" pharmacy, right? Yes, it's a REAL pharmacy and we love this place. They are fast, efficient, and the store is in a perfect location for us. The best part was getting a phone call from a real person asking about Gertie "the dog" Logan. They called to check up on my dog yall! We are switching our own Rx's to this pharmacy. read more

People's is a good place to learn about holistic health and buy books, local food, and supplements that support it. They have a great fresh deli, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, the pharmacy is completely inefficient. For the past year, I've been trying to get my prescriptions there, mainly because I like the vibe and would like to support the business. Almost every time I went to retrieve a prescription, however, something would come up; It would have been re-shelved, they'd neglect to give me other prescriptions I had ready, they'd have missed applying insurance properly, etc. etc. It got to the point where I would call ahead, attempt to make sure things were ready and how much they would cost, and *still* plan on spending at least 30 minutes picking up what I needed. I am super happy with the pharmacy at HEB, which is much more organized and convenient to boot. I'll continue to go by People's to get various salads and salves on occasion, but my pharmacy business is elsewhere. read more
