When my BMW needed an oil change i refused to pay the $325 the dealer asked and decided to take it to Pep Boys. I was careful going in and made sure they used the right oil to ensure I would not be running into engine problems later. I waited patiently for 45 minutes as they completed the work, and when all was said and done I'd paid $80 for the oil change. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't reset my car's computer, and that I'd have to deal with the "need oil change" warning until my next. But hey it was $80. Or so I thought. 8 months later and I took my car to the dealer to get it tuned, and was told that the oil filter housing needed be replacing for a whopping $950. I decided to take it a mechanic who specializes in BMW's and received great reviews from personal acquaintances. Someone I knew I could trust and who wasn't making commission off my repairs. Long story short, the car doesn't need the oil filter housing replaced. However, it was discovered that "whoever did my oil change" had not properly sealed it, and over the last 8 months I've been leaking oil. The mechanic found oil all over, on valves and belts, which ended up needing to be replaced. So I may have saved $245 on an oil change, but I ended up making up for it 8 months down the line. So my advice? Don't take your BMW here. I can't speak for other vehicles. read more

So I already went to one Pep Boys down the street and they couldn't do a BATTERY CHECK unless I left my car?! They said try this one. Same response- "we're very busy and you'll need to wait an hour". AN HOUR?!?! For a 2-minute battery check that usually Pep Boys in Long Bach does immediately, even if they're "busy". I guess Downey doesn't believe in customer service. Last time I came in here many, many months ago (around the beginning of January) they did something shady with my smog check. They didn't pass it but didn't give me a reason why. They guaranteed me that if I drove the car for a week or two and PAID THEM TO RETEST IT, it would pass. It did, but I didn't like spending $70+ to have it smoged twice. Yesterday my husband went in with a digital coupon from an email special we received for an oil change and came out spending $40, instead of $20. I went in today to speak to Eziquel, the associate who helped my not-so-smart man, and he said that their website doesn't work with apple products so they wouldn't honor the coupon even though he knew we had it (he saw the email and knew of the coupon right away). I had to find a place to inspect my breaks due to a funny noise it was making. I yelp'd and found this to be the nearest pepboys location. I phoned ahead and spoke to Ezequel who informed me of inspection cost and brake pads pricing. I quickly brought my car in for them to check it out. Ezequel informed me the wait was a little over 1 1/2 hours. I decided to leave my car and catch a lyft home instead of waiting there. He said he would give me a ring once they find out the cause. 1 1/2 hours later I received a call from Ezequel who reported my brake pads are good but the rear drums were a bit misaligned causing un-even wear and tear. He said it was be $29.99 with a waived inspection fee and my car would be ready in 15minutes. My car was ready by the time I arrived and the transaction price was as promised. I did have an issue at the store this time i came in, because i got accused of coming back with a used air filter, and trying to exchange it for a new one. I told the manager, thats how i got it, and when i got home to install it, it was used. He asked the teller if she checked it, and she said she did. I know she didnt. But i didnt want to get into it and make her look bad. Then the manager, said, " well she said she checked it".. I was like, and, "well, i dont know what to tell you, when i got it, it was used". I came in only to find out that they don't have the part, not only that by Danny and another employee were giving me attitude like I am the one at fault. Literally the best service I've ever had. While my appt was at 1:30 I came inside and went to the desk to let them know I was early. Rafael took me right away and said no problem. He even brought out a chair since was early. The service here was incredible and the staff very friendly. When i had to use the bathroom they directed me right away, put my purchase to the side and held onto them u til i came back. My car works great they fixed my alignment with ease and the oil change was done flawlessly! This is the 3rd time I have been to this location for a lyft inspection. They are the absolute worst with customer service. Every time I come they are rude and short. They make you wait long past your appointment and when it comes time for your inspection they bark orders at you. Today was new i was asked to fill out a form that I never filled out. I asked for a pen. I saw 3 in his pocket and a few on his desk. I was told he would not give me a pen. I told him I did not have a pen as I was told I only need my driver's license and insurance. He again said no pen. Really he had 5 or 6 in eye sight and couldn't spare one. Now I have to go all the way home to get a pen. I had an appointment at 12pm dropped off my car at 1130 am I was told 2 hours (which is a whole lot of time for an oil change as is) I walked home which took an hour and got caught up doing house chores so I went in to pick up my car at 5 pm which was a little over 5 hours!! I show up and they tell me my car won't be ready for another 40-45 minutes!!!! I didn't end up getting my car keys back until a little after 6 pm I don't know about y'all but it's 2022 and every other car service repair has your car done within 30 minutes for an oil change. I'll start with a quick summary and go into more detail for those who are interested. I received a synthetic oil change and paid extra for the better quality oil for my 2012 VW Tiguan at 61,000 miles. I had major engine failure the VERY NEXT DAY, had pep boys run a diagnostic, they couldn't diagnose and referred me to dealer who said my timing chain tensioner FAILED due to poor quality oil and non-OEM oil filter. Cost of repair is $10K , Pep boys won't help in any way and VW won't do anything which means I get screwed. I paid Pep Boys to do a change for me because I don't know how to do one myself, wasn't expecting them to not know what they were doing also, why pay if quality of work is going to be terrible. Also a private mechanic said that the bottom of my car was missing a bunch of screws under the engine so whoever put my stuff back together at Pep Boys put 3 instead of 12 screws back. Okay now I can go into more detail: We usually use Jiffy Lube to do our oil changes and do a synthetic oil change every 6,000 miles , not the 9,000 that most synthetic oil. We tried Pep Boys figuring they were a little better quality we thought and closer to home. Everything seemed okay until the next day when the car started shaking . Our commute to work is about 2 miles and it got really shaky so we immediately took it to PepBoys, who wasn't able to diagnose. In fact the rep said he didn't know what the codes meant and was very confusing. Dealer said it was poor quality oil and oil filter that caused pressure in engine to change and cause tensioner to fail. I had Pep Boys talk to dealership mechanic so that they can work out what was wrong. Basically dealership said it was lack of maintenance and use of non-OEM oil filter so Pep Boys said it's my fault. Although I pay for a professional to do our oil more often than I'm supposed to. Now the rep I spoke with was polite and apologetic but it doesn't do me any good since now I have a car that needs a whole new engine. Do yourself a favor Do Not use Pep Boys for any service as they won't take ownership of a poor service and don't really care about their customers. I wasn't Offered anything as far as compensation. This is officially the only Pep Boys I will go to. I've been to both the Anaheim and Fullerton stores, and even with an appointment, getting an oil change always takes all day. Today, though they were short staffed, I showed up for my appointment at 9, dropped my car off, went across the street for my dentist appointment, and when I returned Ezekiel had my key and paperwork ready to sign with a smile. My first time to this pep boys and everything went well when I drop the vehicle off, but when I went to pick it up the next following day I spot a long scratch on my driver side door and not only that, someone from pep boys was probably using my vehicle and eating sunflower seeds inside my car. I called and talk to their manager he immediately denied it and said he look through the camera and told me that his mechanic didn't do it and it was there when I drop it off.... knowing there is at least 7-10 cars in the shop how can you even zoom in to that particular scratch?? The vehicle was a rental and I put my deposit money on it knowing if anything happens to it my deposit money is gone so I DO KNOW how to take care of the car but anyway, lesson learned. The service department here are unable to give you a true diagnosis of your vehicle. They can cash on your car and will charge for things that are not necessary for your car. They have incompetent mechanics and will nickel and dime you. Buyer beware.... you should take your vehicle to other more ethical places. As a department manager In a much busier and face paced store, I find it hard to believe that it's too difficult to give exceptional customer service at any time of the day. Beside all the stare downs and glances as if my grown ass needs to be watched. Tonight I asked a woman for a price check on tires, and a she told me "the other guy can help you" I said "oh the one in black" she says "yeh" And I politely told her thank you. Then I say excuse me to the guy, and without even looking at me. Says "yeh" Then I asked him for a price check. And with the same dry ass attitude, basically tells me he's too busy and has to send an email... is it the Jordan's that I was wearing, or the durag on my head that keeps these waves silky that perceived you to believe that I wasn't prepared to make a purchase? It shouldn't matter, nor should it matter what time of the day it is. And because you are too involved in whatever minimal task you got going on in that head of yours, you missed out on a $416+ sale off of something as easy as a price check, in which I was prepared to pay. ZERO - ZERO ZERO - ZERO Brakes were making noise n I wanted to checked out. I had a previous inspection a few months prior but I figured it was a good idea to follow up again now since it had been a while. Pepboys charged me $20 to do a brake inspection and they came back that the front/ back brakes needed replacement and rotors needed sanding. I smelled the BS a mile away so I went 2 another tire shop the following day and see what they had to say. Diagnosis: metallic brakes were making noise and the brakes did not need replacement. NO CHARGE. Could have spent over $500 at Pepboys to fix a problem that was a lie but I'm glad I realized they are Crooks. read more

I did not wait too long. Heck, I was at the nearby laundromat anyway so time sort of flew. They changed my breaks for an OK price. I had gone to my dad's break man in Gardena two years ago and remembered how my breaks hissed and squealed like an ungodly cross between a snake and a sow forever after he "fixed" them. So, needless to say I did not return to Gardena. Pep Boys is close to my place so I called and decided they were not that much more expensive than the guy in Gardena. They made sure my car was ready before they gave it to me. No squealing or hissing to this day! So why do they not get a 5? Here's why.... They tried to convince me to buy new tires and change the air filter. I HATE THAT! I hate it when they try their hardest to get you to spend more. I mean. I am sure they know that I know that my tires are not new. Funny thing, just a few days before I had purchased a new tire at Costco because one had gone flat and they told me the rest of my tires were at 51%.... We drove to the new Valvoline location on Firestone and it was done in 15 minutes , we did stay longer and had a $49 in cabin air filter replaced, and bought 2 windshield wipers at $26.99 each and were given bottles of water .We happily spent $221.00 at your competitor all because you guys are doing oil changes the old way . read more

This shop has not even an idea of what customer service is about, there is neither enough personnel or professional technicians to work at a normal speed in the service shop and no manager supervising, one simple oil change that normally takes 10-30 minutes average at a small mechanic shop took me more than four hours after being told that it was going to done within 2-3 hours max, It seems like they give priority to the customers that spend the most not to order they receive the service request. This is very disappointing because I explained the person at the service desk that I use this car for work but they have no consideration for customers at all. read more

I arrived at 7:50am this morning to have a battery replaced in truck. I asked if they could fix it and we started the necessary paper work to get replaced. I did explain to them that the trucked pulled to the right hard. Alignment issues. The pickup was left running for them to test drive etc. They had told me it needed tires, alignment, obviously a battery. 1.5 hrs later I asked how it is going and the tech said they were waiting for a reply from the fleet service manager to approve the work. I explained all they had to do is let me know, I emailed our corporate to reach out and tell the fleet manager to agree to charges. 10mn and it was approved. Then they told me all was approved and good to go, but they did not have the tires and had to go and get them. 2.5 hrs later, no work on truck. No communications, even though I'm in the make shift lobby, and standing by the front door. Tires are off, no battery, tire machine breaks down. No communication. 4 hrs later, using bars to dismount tires. No battery yet. 6.5 hrs later, battery, tires, but then they claim the alignment was denied, all the while the had another customers vehicle on the alignment rack doing maintenance and no alignment. People, I have been a mechanic my whole life as well a tradesman. I am not stupid when I tell them that you have another vehicle on your rack in the way not being aligned. Just to mention, while holding my vehicle hostage all day, I worked graveyard shift the night before, up all day waiting for them to complete my work truck. So if you think 6.5 hrs to put in a battery and 4 new tires is good? Then by all means go to this store. Other customers were waiting for their tires even though the tire machine was busted. 2hr wait time. Should have told those customers tire machine was down. Some management issues here. Don't go to this location or the other one on Paramount either. Went for an oil change last Saturday 11/6 and yesterday noticed oil leaking from my truck. I decided not to go back to them as I had a gut feeling they would only continue to mess up my car. Glad I didn't go back! I went to Valvoline instead and was shown an empty oil bottle that was left in my engine! Along with an oil filter frame. The plastic bottle was melted from the heat of the engine and had leaked on the frame and oil pan. I contacted customer services and was given a case number. Was told the manager Rafael would contact me to "fix" the issue. I have yet to receive a call. Yes I want a refund and will be going in person. Should have learned my lesson when Rafael was at the Paramount Blvd location. They forgot to replace the cap after an oil change and my wheel lock was "misplaced". I was given another one that was not mine. I went to the Lakewood location after those incidents but now he is the manager at this location. Don't let these guys work on your car. Obviously negligent and need training on customer service. Will never return to any Pep Boys. read more

I've been going to this Pep Boys since I got my license years ago, but I have to write a review for the excellent service I received from Raphael recently. I had bought a pair of taillights here a few months ago for my back right blinker, and wouldn't you know it, here goes my back left as well. I knew how to do it but didn't have the tools - Raphael was friendly and courteous, and very helpful, and took the 5 minutes out of his day to assist me with the swap. It's the little things like this - graciously lending a hand, offering advice without judgement, helping you get the best deal, giving you their time and attention with a smile - that make this Pep Boys in Downey feel like it's a local shop, not part of a chain. I know the employees' names, and they know mine - "Hey, you're the Pontiac, right?" It's not just the excellent service they provide but the atmosphere they generate and trust they elicit that makes this the first place I think to go for all of my needs for my car. read more

Last minute i asked if they could replace my headlight (they were already done servicing my car) and Alexander offered to do it himself since the mechanics were all busy (another guy was available but it I definitely appreciated the gesture). Came in for a battery/ alternator charge check. Rep said it shouldn't take to long. I came in at 11am. There were a few cars ahead of me, so i didn't mind waiting. After an hour goes by my car finally makes it in a bay. They plug it in to check the charge. This is at 12pm. After an hour goes by, i ask the status and they said the battery was dead and they couldn't check the alternator. I don't know how long it takes to check a dead battery, but when i asked for the status, he had it right away. I just feel like the employees just take their time doing things. There was an old lady, she was there for 3.5 hours, don't know what she was waiting on. At the end, i had a doctor's appt to go to and could not wait any longer. I just bought the battery and had it installed. I also had a coupon for free installation which i forgot to give. I asked if i can use it, and the rep said it was to late to cancel and couldn't take it. I could argue because i was already ruining late to my appt. 2.5 hours i was there. Smh read more

I have been taking my Pontiac to the Downey Pepboys for over 15 years and they always provided exceptional service. Today was no different. I came in because the service engin soon light came on in my car. A service professional ran a diagnostic test for free and found that all I needed was a new fuel cap to avoid the small gas leak my car had. I bought the part in the store and they put it on for free. Excellent service as usual! I plan on taking all of my cars to the Downey location of Pepboys. With years of amazing service, they have won my loyalty for life! read more
