I brought my car in when the engine light was on. I called ahead asking if they would charge a diagnostic fee and was told over the phone by the sales associate they would wave the diagnostics fee if I came in that day. I went to this pep boys only for them to tell me the diagnostics fee would not be waived but they were willing to cut it in half from $100 to $50. I was told with confidence the diagnostics would take one hour and my car would indeed be fixed that day but instead I received a call THREE hours later and was told the fix would cost $1000 (see below for how much my dealer charged me) and the car couldn't be fixed until tomorrow. Due to some inaccurate information that was shared with me on my car, I decided this place wasn't for me. When I arrived back to pep boys and asked to have my car returned to me, the salesman (Jossiell) told me the mechanic marked my car as unsafe to drive and that I needed to have the car fixed at pep boys. I had to escalate to the manager to get my car keys back and then the sales associate tried to charge me $100 for diagnostics. Best part - the dealer only charge me $500 to fix the issue. Note this isn't on the mechanic at pep boys, it's on the sales associate. Two weeks later it broke down again and I had it towed back there after it was determined that it was due to their negligence it has been there for over a month and they refuse to repair it under the warranty that I paid extra for. read more

Don't go here unless you have a really simple problem and a LOT of extra money burning a hole in your pocket! I tried using their service department on 2 occasions. The first time they kept the car for most of the day and did ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING and charged me over $90 for a diagnostic fee and then told me that they couldn't figure it out. I took it to another mechanic and they figured out the issues (2 separate problems) in a 3 minute conversation and 2 minutes to verify it. The second time I took something there was to get 2 mounts and a ball joint (all of which I purchased there) pressed into the upper control arm that I took out of my vehicle (this should be a quick process) they asked me for almost as much as my other mechanic (who was closed that day) wanted for the whole job. They had a one day special for oil changes that looked good and I hear the Pep Boys commercials all the time so figured they couldn't be too bad. Should have checked reviews before going so that I knew how bad they really can be. Actually don't be fooled, the current 1.5 stars is overinflated to me. Would give 0 stars if possible. Called before hand and they said I didn't need an appointment. Arrived at 5:30 and they said they were too busy and to come back. Went back at 6:30 and they said it would take half an hour. 7:15 and the car hadn't been moved. Asked and they said it would be another hour. How do you go from a 30 minute wait at 6:30 to a 1 hour wait 45 minutes later. Shouldn't wait time be decreasing? They close at 8:00. No way I trust it would get done. Took the keys back and left. Have to give some recognition for Pep Boys. I had gone somewhere else to have my car serviced. My car actually broke down on the road (not 100% sure that this was related but somewhat suspicious). This was on a Sunday when not a lot of places were open. I called Pep Boys and George was so helpful and friendly and he reassured me they would figure out the problem. He actually recommended Pep Boys towing. A while later I had my car towed there and I was able to leave it there. They figured a out the problem and were reasonably priced overall. I had an appointment to change my tires - it was a complicated switch from Winter to Summer tires, a spare in place and 2 new - and the staff here at the Pep Boys in Parsippany had no problems figuring it out. Then tried charging me twice for a diagnostic!) The radio and lights were still functioning correctly on my car, yet this bozo ripped out my battery. The dealer fixed the problem and I had to fight with pep boys for a refund. Then I made an appointment online to install 4 new tires on my truck. I dropped it off the night before (key in the drop box) only for pep boys to let it sit for 2 days. I called for an update and was told "We didn't check the drop box". I bought tires elsewhere. Lastly, I had a blower motor replaced here. After a few days it stopped working. I had enough with this place and took my truck to the dealer for the repair. So I called to ask about getting a tire balanced. The guy on the phone (didn't catch his name) was friendly and informative. When I arrive and ask about getting my tire balanced, I am met with another guy who was somewhat rude and impatient. No- I don't think that my tire or car needs all this extra and expensive sounding things you are trying to upsell me for... The guy on the phone said I would wait 30 minutes and spend $15 balancing one tire. This guy tells me 1 hour minimum and $20. He is also suggesting that maybe I need a new tire or my suspension is cracked etc. I left and went to Firestone. They were friendly, hassle free and cheaper too! $13 for a tire rotation and prompt, clean and professional service! I can see why pep boys isn't as busy at Firestone- they lack the service, professionalism, honestly and integrity of the competition! I will not return for service! read more

I had low tire pressure and called their service center and spoke with George who was very helpful over the phone. He said I could bring the car in and it would take about an hour to make the fix. When I arrived George greeted me and took down all the information, told me it would take about an hour and that they would call. I made an appointment online for a four wheel alignment online, providing the make a model of my car. I arrived at 5:40pm and stood in line for 15 minutes before even speaking the to someone at the service counter for my 6pm appointment... which is fine, they were busy (discounting the 2 or 3 people standing around and eating McDonalds). I finally spoke to the rep and she was very helpful. She discussed the alignment options they had, took my keys, and informed me that they currently had another vehicle on the alignment rack, but mine would be next and take about 40 minutes. I walked around the store, then sat in the waiting area... until 7:55. At that time the tech came out and said "We can't get your car on the rack, because it's bottoming out on the ramps. My mustang can't get on the rack either." He took me back to show me the ramps and he was right. I could easily see that the ramps have about 15-20 degree pitch. Even with a front end as short as my VW, it wasn't going to happen. The tech handed me my keys and told me that Firestone down the road has a zero-clearance alignment rack. Thanks Pep Boys, 2+ hours of my night wasted, 30+ mile round trip, and nothing to show for it. A few notes/questions: 1. How did they not know this when I made the appointment or when I arrived? 2. How do they perform alignments on anything except SUVs and trucks? 3. Why not get some new longer ramps?!?! 4. Did my 6pm appointment mean nothing since they clearly didn't attempt to get it on the rack until at least 7:30? 5. I'm glad they didn't do my alignment. I went in because I saw the Free Check Engine Light Evaluation sign on the door. Unfortunately it wound up costing me $105. Very deceptive biz practices. They advertise the free evaluation to get you in the door knowing you expect an actual evaluation of the warning light, but they define an evaluation as merely pulling the codes. Telling you what the codes mean and providing an educated guess of the root cause or problem is something they define as a diagnostic. When you bring your car in because you see the Free Check Engine Light Evaluation sign they don't ask you or tell you what it means and will perform the diagnostic and charge you $105. So full of *****. Had a reasonably good experience there 2 years ago. Complete brake job. Am so disgusted after estimate couple of weeks ago. Always selling up. Needed another complete brake job after 38,000 miles since last one? Pads yes. The rotors were fine. They wanted to sell me on an 1100. job which included a rear wheel seal. The clerk had the whole order written up before I was even told. Lots of extras that manager said were necessary. I said no. Rude girl at desk. I said seal was covered by Ford under extended warranty. Manager said "probably not". I knew better. It was. I checked with Ford. Pep Boys manager was not being truthful. Put on pads only. $320.00. rip off for cheap pads, minimal labor. Still he tried to convince me I needed new rotors. All four. I inspected them . They were neither warped nor scored. "They will squeak if you don't" he said. Guess what? After even those cheap pads were installed, they don't squeak at all. Finished with Pep Boys for good. F***ing pathetic. First I drop my car off for an oil change appointment at 10am and they tell me it's going to only take 1 hour, so they would call when it's done. It gets to 12:45pm, almost 3 hours later, I call them and they say yes it has been done we just wanted to give you recommendations to do your tires, brakes ect. I have not had my car serviced here, but have been into the store for various car needs and parts. The service is pretty terrible. There is one guy there that is nice - I've only ran into him once. All of the women that have helped me in this store have been extremely rude - sad. The only positive about Pop Boys is that they seem to always have what I need. They have a better stock situation than Advance Auto Parts (across the street). Second time ordering online and then going there only to find out They Didn't have item for me! I ordered Window Vent Visor for my vehicle online and was sent an email saying could be picked up "anytime" and when I went 3 hours later was told that it was a "special order" and would have to wait 2-3 more days, pay more, special order fee and THEN I could come back and pick up! I drove 15 miles to pick up only to be told that! I had the same thing happen several months ago when I ordered a car battery and sent an email saying "ready anytime" only to show up and be told, "sorry, we haven't gone to our warehouse yet but just wait and we'll send someone" 40 minutes later someone actually showed up and then told it would be an hour before they could install it. Went to Pep Boys, 1440 E Rt 46, Parsippany, NJ 07054 (Store ID# 0446) and reported issue with the AC in my car - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, works only in the rear. The Service manager came back to me with a quote of $800(+taxes) and they said the compressor needs to be replaced. Charged $41 for inspecting the AC issue which I paid. Being skeptical of the response went to another repair shop in Lake Hiawatha --- the issue was that there was a freon leak and my cabin filter was clogged. They fixed the AC issue for $199 (+taxes). Cannot trust PepBoys....they seem to be over quoting by not fixing the real problem.... Advise: If PepBoys quotes more than $300 for anything take your car somewhere else. read more

Not sure if I can leave a zero star but never go to this store. My wife just went in yesterday to fix a flat. Waited over and hour to be told it was a TPMS issue in the tire. We found out at Mavis today that it was a nail and screw in the tire that caused it to go flat. So they made my wife wait over an hour and never looked at the tire then told her a bogus issue to up the repair bill. Never go to this store, we will never frequent the store again. If I could give no stars I would. Let me just tell everyone.. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!! I came in for FOUR new tires because there was a promotion going on. I go in and Gabriel, the guy who 'helped' us kept pushing for an alignment. First, he started at $99 and we said no, then he went down to $50 to 'give us a break' and we still said no. He then asks why we don't want an alignment and I respond with I already had someone to do it for me. He then rolled his eyes at us. He then said that if I did not buy the alignment I would not receive warranty OR roadside assistance, which is fucked up because I already had it checked. So I was not getting ripped off by these people so they could get more money for something I never needed in the first place.I had my alignment checked a week before I got my tires fixed and made sure everything was PERFECT for these new tires I was getting. MY ALIGNMENT WAS PERFECT!!! Then we leave for about 2 hours because they said they would call us when the car was done. We never received a call so we went back and the car was already done (they never called to say the car was done). Then I go in and they try to rip me off completely. They tried charging me $551 for tires that were supposed to cost a MAXIMUM of $350 since I bought 4 tires, one tire was free as well as the installation fees. He then tried to make me pay for it and I told him " no that is not right at all" and he acted like he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about at all. He then calls another guy over after I explained that that price was obviously not correct. I then learn he tried charging me for FIVE tires, plus installation fees and all these other things. But this is not even the worst of it yet. I payed the correct price and then I leave to drive my car with the newly replaced tires. As I am driving my car I let go of my wheel to check the alignment and the car starts very aggressively dragging itself to the right. I then realize that my alignment is severely messed up. When tires are put on NO ONE should have even touched anything to mess up my alignment that bad. I never asked for an alignment because I had it checked a WEEK before I went and because I said no to an alignment at pep boys my alignment is now EXTREMELY MESSED UP!!!! I FULLY believe these people PURPOSELY messed up the alignment so I would have to come back and pay for the alignment I refused multiple times. There is absolutely NO other explanation. Anyone knows you don't touch anything else but the tires if you are getting four new tires.I can't even go in and raise hell to anyone because obviously they cannot admit they messed up my alignment on PURPOSE or they would be going to court. I want my money back for my tires, but those people who purposely messed up my car will deny and deny and deny that they did anything wrong. Absolute scummy people. This is no joke. This is legit. After going to a different and *helpful* parts store today, I remember my experience from a few weeks ago here. So, I bought a "beater" truck and have been working on a few things. It needs some new shocks to hold me over, and I was going to inquire about their off road tires as well. Here is a recap of the conversation: Me: Hi, I was wondering if you could give me prices on the Monroe shocks for my Land Rover. Him (in broken English): No, we don't have those. Me: Ummm, maybe you could look it up (already annoyed as I knew the particular Monroe Sensa-Track shocks that would work). Him (Looking like he could care less and typing a few things in the computer): No, you would have to go to the dealer for that. (Goes back to doing what he was doing.) Me: Well, I suppose you would not have tires that would work either... for this mystical creature called a Land Rover. I'd rather pay the extra money at the dealership for shocks where at least they speak proper English and look at me while talking. So... with the highly competitive nature of aftermarket auto care these days, not only did Pep Boys of Parsippany lose my service business (granted I can do all the work myself and my others rides are under warranty), but they also lost my parts business. I'll go to Advance Auto or Auto Zone for parts from now on. And a few tips: This is Morris County, NJ... can we seriously not find proper speaking employees? I had called Wednesday, May 2, to find out the cost for an alternator replacement, parts and labor. The gentleman on the phone said that the part was about $147, and labor for my car (99 Ford Taurus SE, DOHC) would be $101. I asked about how long it would take and how late they were open; he said it would only take about an hour or an hour and a half, and that they were opened until 9pm. When I brought the car by after work (before 7pm) I spoke with another gentleman at the service desk and let him know the I needed an alternator replacement. I was then informed that the gentleman on the phone was incorrect when he said it would take that long, and that I would have to leave the car overnight. I had not arranged for a ride home because I was expecting to drive my own car home, but he did find arrange for someone to drop me off at the end of his shift, which was nice because I do not know many people that live in the area that would have been close enough to get me. However, I received a phone call the following morning, May 3, saying that the total for the repairs would be +$540. This was double what I was told yesterday over the phone. When I asked why it was so much higher, I was told that the part was $187, labor would be $202, they ran a diagnostics test that costs $89.99, and a "7% shop fee". The gentleman on the phone was able to find a cheaper part at another store and said he would have it delivered, since they were out of stock at that location (in my experience, if you do not have the part, it is not the customer's fault, and they should not be charged for the more expensive one without being warned first), which brought the price down to $152 (only a $4 difference than I was originally told and much more reasonable, so I said OK). I was told then told that he did not know why the guy I had spoken to Wednesday told me labor would only be $101. He said that he may have been looking at the wrong engine size. I informed him that my car had the standard V6 DOHC, and that it's wasn't the larger V8. I still cannot see why there would be such a steep rate increase. The diagnostics test that was run was NOT authorized by me. I already knew what was wrong with my car and indicated both on the phone and when I dropped it off that I just wanted the alternator replaced. I did not request any other tests to be run, nor did I indicate that I didn't know what was wrong with my vehicle that would lead anyone to believe that a test needed to be run. To charge someone an additional $89 for a service that was not authorized and that the customer was not informed would be run so that they could give their approval is a perfect example of unethical business practices. Also, at the time I dropped my car off I was NEVER informed of any "7% shop fee". There is NO signage indicating the charge and nobody told me there would be one. Again, it is completely uncalled for that a business would take it upon itself to add in all of these charges and fees without giving some form of written or verbal indication that they would be incurred. The gentlemen on the phone could not tell me what this shop fee entailed, short of "environmental fees and stuff like that". He said that he would talk to his manager to see if they could work around it, and that they would call me back. I never received a phone call after that from any manager or associate saying that they either could or couldn't waive the fee. The last phone call I received was telling me that my vehicle was ready, and that the final cost was $513 (cheaper only because of the drop in the price of the part received from another location). When I went to pick it up later (6pm) and asked about the charges, I was told that both managers had left and that they couldn't change anything without them there, but I "could come in and talk to them tomorrow." I understand that quotes are just estimates, and that the price can vary either higher or lower. But for the price to double overnight without any warning due to assumptions (assuming that they had the part in stock) and charges (shop fees and diagnostics tests) that were never communicated to the customer for approval or even as a heads up is not at all acceptable. read more

NEVER COMING HERE AGAIN. brought my car to get a simple issue checked out. Pep Boys told me they need to change the timing belt system to fix the problem, for about $800. They even told me that if I didn't get fixed right away, it would blow the whole motor. Fortunately, i asked my mechanic friend who told me that my issue has absolutely nothing to do with the timing belt system and that their line about my motor blowing was total BS to try to scare me into accepting their $800 quote. I brought it to another repair shop, who correctly diagnosed the problem (not at all related to timing belt) and fixed it successfully for only $125. In my view, pep boys either couldn't diagnose a very simple problem correctly, or they were blatantly lying to me. This is the worst place you can bring your car!!! They waste your time and rip you off!!! Here's why: I had my car towed to their facility, because my car wouldn't start. They ran their diagnostic test and told me my fuel pump and sensor were not working. They told me that these were dealer parts and also on back order, which would take a week to get in. After a week goes by, they said that the part came in, but it would cost me close to $800 just on labor. I told them that a guy quoted me $150 for all labor; they said that guy no longer worked there, so I said no on the fix and told them that there had to be another mechanic that can do it for less. They said if I can find one, which I did, they will match it, and they did. So, I said go ahead. And then they tell me the part wasn't in, WTF? So I wait another week; in the mean time I find out from the dealer that it only would take 2 days to bring in. By end of week (I know, I am patient), I had enough and demanded my keys back and refused to pay for anything from the manager. He said ok and took 40 minutes to find my keys!! I swear those guys are the laziest people on earth! There were employees in the parking lot goofing off, and when the manager came around, they rushed back to their cars to look as if they're "working." I bring my car to another mechanic (the one that charged less), they ran their diagnostic test and found that it was the battery!! I had my car back within 24 hours. I would have paid in excess of $1300 (parts/labor) with Pep Boys. read more

It has now been 2 hours and still waiting. My car is still where I parked it. so much for their "express services" on things like oil changes. I went in October for a tire change with an appointment I made at 8:00 am, first person there. I walked out at 10:45. 2 hours and 45 minutes to change 4 tires is ridiculous. I didn't complain, I just made sure I'd never return. Well, today I needed an oil change with the left over gift card balance I had, I made an apt the day before online for 10. I was 10 minutes late, my fault. I was there for 55 minutes before they even took my car into the service area. I spoke with Chelsea and let her know I know it's not her fault but I don't think it's fair to keep a customer waiting almost 40 minutes past their appointment time. Going on an hour and a half...and She was so helpful and so honest with me. She took care of me today. However, everyone else including the mechanics could use some brushing up on customer service and time management. Horrible, pathetic service! I do not understand why they established an online appointment system, when it doesn't even work. Every time you go in with an appointment, it seems to magically disappear from their system. The receptionist we dealt with was exceptionally rude and annoying to the point where having a conversation with her was futile. The workers are so ignorant that they forgot to put the oil cap back in the car and my car started leaking! Another time they took out the battery and said the car wasn't working. HORRIBLE. Went in despite all the bad reviews. I made an appointment online for a 30 minute oil change and waited 1 1/2 hours. There was NO ONE else in the waiting room. The employees were also chatting away the whole time complaining about this and that customer which I find extremely unprofessional. I am never coming back here again. read more

Came here for a check engine light screening, I had the cover off and everything. I had this done here in the past with no issues, always in and out. Well, today I was told I'd have to leave my car or wait 3 hours for someone to get to it. I thought it was a walk in service? I went across the highway to their competitor and was in and out in 15 minutes. 2 stars for the previous good interactions though. read more

Went in for an oil change and installation of my own brake pads... I had my own oil and filter and pads. The service advisor took a brief break from checking his fantasy scores to "help" me. They were going to charge me $189 for the labor... I have had the same exact thing done at pep boys in new york, for $80. They barely spoke English and were very unhelpful. When I said I wasn't going to have the work done, because the price was so high, they seemed relieved and couldn't wait until I left. I'll be driving back home to get my car serviced. I wouldn't trust these guys to wash my car! read more
