I had such an GREAT experience at the Pep Boys that I felt I needed to share. I originally took my Honda Civic to the dealership because my air conditioning wasn't working. The dealership told me the issue was not the compressor seal (which is under warranty), but instead a completely different component that would cost me around $4,000 to repair. Wanting a second opinion, I brought my car here--and I am so glad I did. Ray, the manager, and his team spent over two hours thoroughly checking my car. They were incredibly professional, kind, and patient, and they even honored a coupon I brought in! Most importantly, they told me the truth: it WAS the compressor seal. Because of their honesty, I'm now able to take my car back to the dealership and have the repair covered under warranty--saving thousands of dollars. Received a form response and later that evening was contacted by Leah the alleged Customer Relations Team representative I sent them information and documentation. After several attempts to contact Leah, I have heard NOTHING from her or the alleged Customer Relations Team nor the Field Leadership Team. This lack of response from Leah only reinforces the Pep Boys attitude of ignore customers complaints and treat customers rudely. I have contacted Leah as I said, and after several attempts to determine what, if anything, Pep Boys would do. As of 12-23-25, I can tell you they ignored me. I have never received any more communication from Leah. As a member of the Customer Relations Team, I can document no responses and can only assume the rude behavior I experienced at the store is the model that Pep Boys desires of their employees. Really disappointed with my recent experience here went in for an oil change and left happy. Even though I feel like I was overcharged. The next day I turned my car on and my check engine light is on. I called the shop to ask if I could come in and they can take a look as the light was not on when I brought my car in but they told me that it would cost $100 for them to check. Really think that this location is shady and that they did something to get me to come back and spend more money. I do not think it is a coincidence that the light came on right after my visit. Even if it is a coincidence the guy that took my call when I asked if they could check it out was very dismissive and basically told me to go to somewhere else to check why the engine light was coming on since he didn't want to have to charge me the 100....... ZERO stars!! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME The guys have NO idea what they're doing or what they're talking about. SO MANY HOURS wasted at this shitty shop. They are unprofessional and literally stupid!! First day I come they tell me to be there at 1. I get there at 12:45 and give them my keys they said it would be ready in an hour. My car DID NOT move for 2 hours and I ended up leaving over 5 HOURS after I got there. People came in and went. My car still sat. They finally tell me they don't have the part. ?? After 5 hours now you find you don't have the part. They tell me (when) to come back. Back again, few days later. They tell me to come in at 1. They say they have the part and it'll be ready in an hour. My car did not move for over an hour. After being there for 3 hours!!! It's done- I leave and go to take my emissions test and it's a defective part! Back AGAIN! 3rd time now. My appointment is at 1. They say it will be done in an hour. After an hour and half of waiting. my car finally moves from the parking lot. I'm shocked at how unprofessional, lazy and stupid they are! read more

I got a tire blowout right outside their store with my 7yr old daughter today and I walked over there basically in tears asking for help and they told me they didn't have the time. "Marshall, Manager, wouldnt let me speak. He was yelling at me & wouldnt let me say more than 2 words before he would yell. I would try to get a sentence in & he would yell over me. I got anxiety from being yelled at. I started trembling because he made me nervous. I tried to let him finish talkin so that I could get a word in but he wouldnt let me speak. I felt very humiliated. He encouraged me to bring the car in for additional work & told me that he doesn't expect me to understand how "any of this" works. I felt he was belittling me for not having experience in mechanics. He was talkin down to me and talkin to me as if I didnt have the ability to understand the words he was speakin to me." I went have my freon changed. Before I left, I asked (William) to call if they need to do additional work; before they do it so I will not get charged without approval. I also asked if I would be charged for more than the change & I was told that this would not happen without approval. I was told that this would be about $35-36 to change the freon. I wrote it all down before I left. 4 hrs later; They said 30 minutes more. 1/2 hour later, they called & my mom answered. My mom took a mssg and let me know that "Mike" told her that they found a leak & patched it. The new total: $125 I called back Mike. he told me that he told my mom there was a leak. They decided to patch the leak. I told Mike that I was assured I'd receive a call for any other services. Mike said they could remove the patch and not charge me extra. but if they remove the patch, the freon will leak and ill have to come back. I said they could leave the patch on & Id pay. next day, the ac was blowing hot air. I called & was told the manager will call me back. days later, I realized that noone called back. I called & spoke w/Marshall - Manager & was told they didnt find a leak & didnt patch. I looked @ the receipt & Saw that I was charged for a number of other services; ac system eval, 9 dyes, system reset & a $12 shop fee I asked marshall why Mike told me, & my mom, that a leak was found & patched if they didnt do that service? Marshall told me that Mike never said that. I told him I had written down everythin Mike told me & my mom took a message & wrote down everything she was told & we were told that there was a leak found & patched. Marshall said that Mike never said that & asked me to bring in the car for inspection & to find / service the leak. if they do find another leak then it will be a separate service charge + repairs I said the leak was found & patched already & he continued to deny it. He would not let me speak. He was yelling at me and would not let me say more than 2 words before he would begin screaming that I should bring in the car. I came in because I needed a headlight bulb replacement. One person was in line in front of me. Fine. Take care of the first customer. A third customer walked in and the rep immediately helped him, ignoring me in the process. Not good service. I could forgive this but what happened next prevented this. I accidentally parked in front of a service door. Instead of politely asking me, the manager RUDELY said "I need you to move YOUR car from MY door so I can get cars in." Excuse me?!? Yes, I made an error but I am about to give you MY money for YOUR parts and service! You do not speak to me this way! I told the manager that I was going to do business but because of his attitude I'd go elsewhere. You do not speak to ANY customer doing business the way you spoke to me! I got a large screw in my tire this afternoon. I was over 60 miles away from home. I have never had a issue with Pep Boys where I live. I explained what happened to the lady at the counter, that I had just gotten a large screw in my tire in a parking lot down the street. Everything I asked her she said NO! No they can't help me! No I couldn't wait there until someone could help me! No they can't fix it today! No! No! And No! So I left. Went down the street to Firestone. They were great and helped me right away. And they were very busy. The guy at the counter Terry Ray took care of me! Excellent customer service! I would advise to stay away from Pep Boys and go down the street to Firestone! Don't do it. This place was horrible. I scheduled a drop off oil change with warranty. Scheduled for work @ 12 p.m. I left it at 10 a.m. Manager called at 11:30 said could not wait on phone for warranty authorization, so could not do work! I picked up car, went to Pep Boys in Melrose Park, and got the oil change done right then and there. Lazy staff, manager was beyond subpar.. Does not want to do his job. I would add, I have been using Pep Boys in Melrose Park and St Charles (now closed) for more than 3 years, with 5 family vehicles. First time with thse schmucks. never again. I went to this store after the first store screwed up my purchase and sold me a battery too big for my car. The manager, Cynthy, was very apologetic and took care of the entire exchange and even made sure to give us the rebate form. The arlington heights store had not given me it! She found out that the computer actually listed the battery as the wrong size and made sure she did everything she could to fix the situation and took ownership of the problem. I am very pleased with the service offered here and am glad they took care of the problem and even tried to take responsibility for the problem. Heard later the next morning that since my car was a 2019 they did not have a machine that could help repair a newer vehicle. Low quality repair and dishonest service. The short version of my story, I came in to repair a tire with a nail in it as well as getting a tire rotation. They lied about the tire rotation being done and the tire is still leaking air. --------------------------------------- I came to this location to repair a tire that had a nail through it. The tire that needed the repair was on the driver side at the rear of the car. I decided to also do a tire rotation along with the tire repair. I came in and was told I can only overnight it that day since they were very busy. I decided to make an appointment instead for the following day since I cant overnight my car because I only have 1 car. I dropped my car off the following day and after 2 hours I called them to ask when it would be done and they told me that they were overnighting my car... Even though no one there told me that when I dropped my car off and this was after making an appointment the day before because I specifically could not overnight it before... My tire was already flat so I had no choice but to leave it there. The following day I picked up my car and inspected my tires. It did not seem like a tire rotation was done, but I could not actually 100% prove that so I just took their word for it and went back home. The following day, the tire pressure light went on in my car. The tire that was supposed to be repaired was not repaired properly and was still leaking air. And it was still in the same position as before, the drivers side on the rear. This is proof that there was no tire rotation done. I just wasted time and I am back exactly where I started with a leaking tire that needs to be repaired. So not only was I lied to about the tire rotation being done (it is on my receipt), the repair job was not even done properly since the tire is still leaking air. I suggest to not give Pep Boys your business and look elsewhere. read more

Had an oil change and they added a service without my consent. Excuse was they couldn't get ahold of me, so they proceeded with the work. If I didn't have the funds when picking up the car, how will I get back home? Imagine coming in to find that they tacked on $250 for a simple oil change. Guy knew he was wrong, and automatically discounted it, but still paid almost $200. Fast forward a year later, found that they replaced the oil pan plug with one twice as large and destroyed the threads beyond repair. So after an oil change, I had a huge puddle of oil on my fresh concrete garage floor which cracked it. Their warranty covers three scam artist months, and I'm stuck with a $866 bill to replace the whole oil pan at a neighboring auto mechanic before my commute home. read more

I replaced the struts and shocks on my car on September 29, 2020. My car developed a popping sound, so we took it to Larry's and Dan's service station in Schaumburg,Il. on March 23, 2021 and they said it sounded like it was from the struts and shocks and it should be under Warranty so we should take it back to Pep Boys to have it fixed. We took the car back to Pep Boys and 3031.00 dollars of estimated repairs later they said the problem was a loose piece they could attach with a strap and it should fix the rattle. However, the problem was a popping not a rattle. We chose to get a second opinion. We took the car to Acorn Tires in Hoffman Estates, IL. They test drove the car, with my wife and I in the car and this mechanic heard the popping twice. They checked it out again and diagnosed the problem in the stuts and shocks. They told us the struts and shocks are one unit and there is a spring in that unit and when the wheel is turned , because there is a defect, it is pushing the spring and the popping is when the spring snaps back into place. Because they were under Warranty, we needed to take them back to Pep Boys. We took the car back to Pep Boys, the same guy,once again tried to tell us it was the piece that was rattling. We asked him if they had called Acorn and he said no. My wife and I knew then they were not going to honor their warranty. We left their shop. As of May 1, 2021 the shocks and struts are not fixed. read more

I made an appointment 5 days in advance for an oil change and to have tires rotated. 1/2 hour to my appointment I received a call that they were running behind, don't come in and they will call when it opens up. I waited 5 hours and no call. Obviously walk-ins take priority to those who make appointments in advance. Next morning I went to Jiffy Lube and got in within 1/2 hour without any appointment. I went to go get my brakes and window fixed because my breaks were squeaking and my window wouldn't go down. Instead of charging me for brand new breaks they inspected them and called me to tell me they did not need to be done. Plus with 180000 miles on my car they did a free inspection to make sure my car was in good shape for NO EXTRA CHARGE. Will definitely be going back. read more

My rating is the average of two ratings: One star- I called at 5:35 on Sunday evening because I had a tire that was really low on air. They said they could look at it. I walked in at 5:40, to be told by Mike that they couldn't fix it or put on my spare. They could only fill it up. At 5:40 on a Sunday night, with a storm coming the next day, I was pretty much screwed. I had no choice but to just fill it with air. I pulled it into the garage, where I encountered Jim. 5 starts- Jim was fantastic! He not only fixed my flat, but he also signed me up for the rewards card, so it would cost $10 instead of $35. He also noticed that my headlight was out and changed it. I was out the door in 15 minutes. I found out that Mike is the assistant manager. How does someone with NO customer service skills get to be assistant manager? I would highly recommend Pep Boys, as long as you work with Jim! Steer clear of Mike! read more

I needed two new tires in an emergency and this Pep Boys was the only place I could get an appointment on short notice. There was a reason for that. While the front desk staff was friendly and customer oriented, it was apparent the actual mechanics didn't care. Two tire changes took almost two hours, and there was only myself and another customer waiting. After I started driving, my low tire pressure light came on. I noticed a front tire was a little low, ones of the older tires, so I filled it up. But the light came back on a couple of days later. I kept checking the front tires, since they were the older ones. I finally took it over to a competitor (rhymes with Listcount Mires) and they found that the problem was actually the brand new back tires, professionally installed by Pep Boys. They were supposed to be inflated to 33 psi, but one was 38 psi and the other was 28 psi. So it was obvious that they never checked to see if the tires were correctly inflated when they were installed. Stay away from the Streamwood Pep Boys, their indifference could be very dangerous. read more

The format is easy to navigate and the displays organized. I did some research and found that Pep Boys was above average for the reviews so I went in and told them everything I wanted done. I found the staff friendly and informational on things that I should get checked and when to do so. My car runs great and they helped me with a discount that eased the total price pain a bit. Overall, their prices were cheaper than other places. I highly recommend them! The only downfall is their website. I can't access it for some reason it keeps saying the link is broken, so I can't activate my rewards card. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I made an appointment for 11am to get my tires replaced and was told r would be 1.5 hours. I agreed to an alignment as well which I was told would take another half hour. He asked when I needed the car done by I said 1pm because I had work after. Walking in at 1pm I was told my car wouldn't be ready until 2 because they had just started the alignment. I said this was ridiculous because why ask me what time I needed the car if they'd take hours after I requested anyways? He even told me I was the first car yet tell me why a two hour process took three plus hours when I was the first car in? Ridiculous service. Do yourself a favor and NEVER come here. read more

Went in last Saturday for parts to fix my car. I needed a rear bulb, a drive belt and an engine filter. I spoke to Ben and scheduled service that day for an appointment on Sunday at 9:30am to drop off my car in the hopes of getting the belt and filter installed along with my rear brakes being checked and, if needed, adjusted. I dropped the car off promptly at 9:30am on Sunday (9/21) in the hope of having my car taken care of -- despite the fact they only had one tech in -- they still promised it'd most likely get done before the end of the day. However, they asked that I call around 4pm to ensure progress had been made. I didn't need the car, so I acquiesced to leave it. Calling around 3:30pm, I spoke to Jim who told me that the car hadn't even been looked at and was still sitting out in the parking lot. Going further, I was told that my car would need to be there overnight if there was any hope of it getting looked at that day. When I responded that I'd need the car for work Monday, I basically was told I'd have to return during the week and would be discounted for my time. When I picked up the car, Ben confirmed what Jim has said regarding the discount. I made an appointment for 4:30pm Wednesday, confirmed it'd be alright to leave the parts I brought with them, which I was assured it was and left. Returning Wednesday (9/24) at 4:30pm after leaving work early, I spoke with Jim initially. I was told they had my parts and it would take no longer than an hour and a half to get everything done. I took a seat in the service waiting area and waited. And waited. And waited some more. At 6:15pm when no one came to speak to me, I got up and asked Jim what exactly was going on. I was told they hadn't been able to find my parts! I was then asked if I was sure Ben had told me I could leave them there and reiterated that I absolutely was certain, getting frustrated that the last hour and a half had been wasted without anyone speaking to me. Joe, the acting manager, piped up and asked what was going on and I related the events up to that point. Joe immediately had them get my car into the shop and even went out there to help get the tech rolling on it. I continued to wait, hopeful that I'd be out of there and heading home after what had been a busy day at work. But it was still another hour and a half before Joe notified me that a bolt on my engine had been slowing them from getting the alternator belt replaced. Finally, at 8:30pm as I was speaking with Joe, a tech had come in and offered up the golden ticket that was my completed paperwork. Following a four hour wait, my car was done! I can only imagine a liberated POW could appreciate the new found freedom bestowed upon me. Without having mentioned the discount Ben and Jim had promised prior, Joe was happy to address the amount of time I'd sunk into this project for what was, realistically, not a major overhaul in any way on my car. He discounted the bill beyond anything I had hoped and was happy to do it apologetically explaining the situation. I thanked him profusely for doing what he did and understanding where I was coming from before heading home. The rating is solely based on the interaction I had with Joe and Jim in addition to the completed work having been performed in a satisfactory manner. But as a caveat, I'd be weary of any interactions with Ben as he didn't strike me at any point as incredibly knowledgeable. read more

The boss charging people when they buy new tires they make you sign for the roadside hazard for the tires and you pay for it you get your paperwork and if you don't check it right away you go home and then later on you want to get your tires checked they tell you that they got a look in the computer and when they look in the computer they tell you sorry I can't help you because it's not in here because he charged you for it and it's not in the computer I don't think it's right what this boss is doing because I'm one of the people that he did this to read more

Today I took my friend to the doctor, then had lunch and then stopped to stock her up on groceries. When driving her home on Barrington Rd., we had a flat tire right by the Pep Boys shop. I pulled in driving on the rim. The man in the service department (I wish I had asked his name) was very helpful and friendly. My tire size was not in stock, but he put on my spare--had to rearrange all the groceries in my trunk to get to it--and put the tire in my trunk. I was very grateful for all he did and after driving my friend home to Hoffman Estates, I happily made it back to my house in Lake in the Hills. The Service Dept. is great! Specifically Art and Jim. Art had no problem with me bringing back our 4Runner after they did brakes until I was satisfied with how they felt. He also recommended value parts when cost was an issue and always looks to save me money! Jim took the time to recommend an off the shelf product so I can "fix" my AC myself. I appreciate that he wanted to help me and not just sell me services. He helped my wife by checking out a weak battery and making sure all was fine before letting her go. KEEP YOUR CAR AWAY if you care about it! Brought in my car for a tire to wheel changeover at 12:30. They told me 2 1/2 hours for the job. Called me back at 3:00 when "the tires were finished". Perfect. However they recommended a power steering fluid flush, which I knew needed to get done. Said would be 40 minutes to do the job and my car would be ready in an 1 1/2 hours. It is now past 6:00 (closing time on sunday) and my car is still on the rack. Update: They finished at 6:45. I checked around under my hood and found the air-box was not closed and would have been sucking DAMAGING DEBRIS into my engine. Way to go Pep Boys! read more
