Pepper Steak has been around for ages, even tho over the last few years it has changed hands and even names, it always comes back. I re-call eating there in the 80's and was amazed and how good it was, even a simple roast beef sandwich. Well that has certainly changed. The service itself is just ok. The food is blah, my grandson who ALWAYS takes his leftover chicken strips home, insisted he did not want the ones from there. Most of the food taste like it is pre-packaged and simply "put together" which was a huge disappointment. I do hope one day they get back to the delicious menu they once had. read more

Been wanting to try this place for awhile and tonight we finally got around to it! It started off at 5 stars for the staff. Very prompt and incredibly sweet. Our server was Amber. One star was taken off because they didn't have the cheese sticks. No biggie. We got the chicken strips instead and they were yummy! The service here has gone down. Sit and wait for the waitress Alma to take my order when they are not busy and the waitress is behind the counter eating! That's great service is too eat while you watch your customers waiting to be served! This has been a problem the last few times they are losing my business. Such a disappointing breakfast with my dad. Definitely not "father's day" service. The waitress that set us has been there for a long time she showed us to our seats and gave us the menu she showed the guests immediately behind us to their seats gave them men you've got them coffee and water within 60 Seconds It took 10 minutes before we even received coffee. it tasted as if my steak has been in the freezer since before the coronavirus shut down. When I complained our server Janelle said that they were short-staffed. The Waitresses that were there where the same waitresses that are always there when I come into the restaurant no difference and the restaurant was not particularly busy there was one party 10 on the patio and there were three tables inside. Not only did I not finish my meal but I could not even eat the leftovers because when I went to reheat it the meat smelled even worse than it tasted before. I was driving by on my way to a customer's house when the sign cought my attention. On my way back I decided to stop by and try the food. Customer service was outstanding. Everyone is very friendly. I ordered steak and eggs. It was delicious. They grind the coffee at the restaurant wich makes it taste so good. I had to try the french toast, I'm glad I did. For 22 years, I've driven past this establishment at least 1 time per week. For at least a decade I've said I'm gonna try it out. Today was the day. I'll start out with the negative, then the positive. Negatives - took forever to seat me even though seating was plentiful. Refills also took a longtime. That's about the only bad stuff. Positives - love the way it looks in here. Has a very mountain/Bavarian decor. There are 2 televisions to watch sports. There is also wifi. My food was on my table within 10 minutes of ordering. The soup of the day (beef basil) was tremendous! For my main course I had the Pepper Steak, the staple sandwich. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. It's not as amazing as a Heskas, Phillipe's, or Saverinos. However it is way better then a Subway or a Jersey Mikes. I was in the mood for a hearty sandwich and this hit the spot. The servers were also really nice when I asked to watch the UFC fights. They switched it to them right away. I'll be back and it won't be 22 years. Perhaps breakfast in a week or two. read more

We tried Pepper Steak for our postponed anniversary. We called in our order at thee end of a busy day. When we arrived at the drive thru we were greeted nicely. They were still working on our order so we payed and watched them all work as a team to get our order right. It was all completed quickly and politely. When we got our food home it was all still warm. My husband had the salmon with soup, veggies and baked potato. he was very pleased with his dinner and the Navy bean soup was delicious. I had the beef dip with coleslaw.It was a classic, just the way it should be. We will be back especially for more of that soup. read more

I love this place and have been coming here for years! It's not really a diner as much as it is a mom & pop coffee shop. I have had almost everything on the menu and can tell you that I have never had a bad meal...not even once. The service is good, food is great and the price is even better! This place used to be THE place to go back in the day before the new freeway was built bypassing Highland Avenue. It used to be so busy that we would have to wait an hour just to get seated; especially during the winter season...all of the skiers would stop on their way up to Big Bear to fill up before hitting the slopes. Once, for breakfast, we saw a helicopter land in the vacant lot right next door and a bunch of skiers came out, stopped for breakfast and then took off to Big Bear!!! The breakfast here was always worth the wait. Here are my recommendations for breakfast: Polish Sausage and Eggs Greek Omelette California Omelette Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs Ribeye Steak & Eggs Biscuits and Gravy Good coffee! For lunch they have GIANT salads... the broiled chicken breast salad is my favorite salad...with a mix of greek an blue cheese dressing...seriously good! But my most favorite thing to have for lunch here is soup...and I always ask for a large bowl...which is like 4.95 and is served with a side of sourdough...they have THE BEST homemade soups! They have Pepper Pot Soup everyday...which is a nice vegetable soup in a tomato broth with big chuncks of bell peppers and potato...mmmm! Weekly Soups (and I've had them all and they're all great!) Monday: Chicken Noodle Tuesday: Beef Barley Wednesday: Navy Bean Thursday: Split Pea Friday: Clam Chowder Saturday: Beef Rosemary Sunday: Creamy Chicken & Rice (one of my fav's) They even have a drive-thru and it's great because today it was raining and I didn't even have to get out of the car to get my soup for lunch! I love that! This place serves a great dinner too...My favorite thing is the special board...they usually have something homemade on special... I love the Swiss Steak...that gravy is yummy! You get soup or salad included with your dinner (really, who does that any more? I usually have to pay more for that). The fish specials on Fridays are great....especially the Orange Roughy...it is lightly breaded and has a great homemade sauce...it literally melts in your mouth. Best thing for dessert is Baklava that the owners wife makes and is the best I ever had (huge too...serves two people) and/or the hot fudge sunday...Yum! They have an upstairs loft for large parties and a huge outdoor patio which is nice for when we want to grab a bite after church and have our whole family and the kids with us. My parents have come to Pepper Steak for years and years and now I truly get to tease them that are indeed old. Saying this though, I must admit that every once in a great while I too get the urge to come to Pepper Steak. (At least I don't go once a week like they do!) Sure it's diner food, but diner food hits the spot sometimes. The Greek owners had left a couple years back and the restaurant changed hands, changed names and dove quickly downhill. I guess word got back to the original Greek owners about the sad state the restaurant was in so they came back, spruced the place up & re-opened with the same old name. Sure enough, the same old patrons (my folks included) came back with smiles on their faces and tummys hungry. I don't really know what to recommend here. It's diner food so you're pick is probably the same as mine would be. The point is not so much the food, but the down-home feel you get when you eat here. We have been going here for years. The fact that they have a drive-thru is awesome!! The building itself has charm, although older and needs a little love, but the food makes up for the appearance. We have tried many many items, and damn they have a lot of choices, and we are pleased about the quality of most of the items. They have a huge variety of home-style breakfasts and definitely reasonably priced! The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because the girls running the window really have to pay more attention to giving ALL the food in the order. Sadly, they missed an item on several occasions, lately, so I make sure everything is in the bag before I drive off. The breakfasts are good and the steaks are sometimes good and sometimes tough. The waitresses are usually (with the exception of one time), pretty fast and friendly. They were pushing the grilled Greek fish special so I got one. I'm not sure if the cook didn't like me or if the sauce was just supposed to taste like urine.
