This was on our list of must-do's while in Chicago and we had no idea how crazy the wait would be, or that they had an online reservation system - they do - and you must use it! Don't try to come without a reservation! We found out the hard way after a particularly rough drive from downtown on our first night in the city. The second night, I figured we would just put in a pick up order, but it was still early and I called to see if we could get in to sit down. The woman on the phone said they could give me a reservation, from what I thought I heard, "in 45 mins", calling at 3:15. We were downtown again, so fought like hell in traffic to get up there and by the time I was parked, walking in the door at 4:05, so I thought I was good. What I had heard as "in 45" was actually "3:45", so now we were 20 mins past our reservation. A nice young man came down and started digging into the reservations and table map, and really saved my bacon with the family when he found us a table and got us right in! There are enough reviews about the pizza, and whether you like the caramelized crust or not (you just have to try it for yourself) but their customer service, even being a busy place, was top notch. I'm sure most other places would have said tough, get out of here, but they took care of us, even though it was my mix up. The crust was light, fluffy and crisp on the outside. The sauce was so rich and full flavoured and it was a perfect balance with the cheese and did not overpower it. Stopped here on the way to the airport and many others had the same idea. They had a space for luggage. Make reservations or order for take out and expect a 30 minute wait for the pizza. Ordered a bunch (10+) of pizzas for a large group tonight and enjoyed every pie I tried!! Had pepperoni, meatball, and cheese. All 3 were delicious. Crust was perfectly cooked, nice and crispy. Cheese was melted just right and the toppings were plentiful. I don't typically like a lot of sauce on my pizza and I thought this would be too much when I first looked but it was just right. We did pick them up since we had such a large group and were about 20min from the shop but the pizza was still hot and delicious when our group returned with it. Pizza was mostly ready at the ordered time, though they did advise they had to remake one that got a little over cooked. Only delayed us by about 10min and didn't impact the rest of the order. Very good spot. Like very high 4 or even 5. Granted it's been years since I've been to Chicago and this is my first bite of food after our flight but this pizza was GREAT. My original ranking from before was (1-3) Gino's East , Giordanos then Lou Malnati's last. With today's visit I may be putting Pequods the 1 spot. Or maybe like 1A for Gino's and 1B for Pequod. Crust had a good crunch and the sauce was very flavorful. Granted one caveat I'd say is that usually I don't order pizza with jalapeños but my friends wanted it and they did add just the right amount of spice flavor without overpowering the pizza. The meatballs were nice and tender as well too though. Considering how much meat was on there it wasn't overly salty too. The food did take a while to come out there, but that's not really unusual considering it's a pan pizza so I can't really complain about that. Our servers were really nice and they offer to serve you your first slice when the pizza comes out. they also checked on us just the right amount of times, not too often, but still enough to make sure our drinks were filled. Sidenote, I definitely recommend making reservation because this place was packed when we got there and we only got a table because we called ahead . But don't be fooled from the outside, it may look small, but it goes in pretty deep in there so it's actually a lot bigger than it appears. This place lives up to the hype! I'm not a big deep dish person but this place was yummy. We got a half salad, mozzarella sticks, and a small pizza to share. LOL we definitely underestimated our ability to finish the pizza. My partner got giardiniera on his side and it was fire -- the pickled peppers cut through the cheesiness. Everybody has been raving about this pizza joint so I went there while on vacation, and even reserved a table. The spot is spacious with two floors and has a real neighborhood type vibe to it. I got the small pan pie with a bunch of toppings. I will say, the crust lived up to the hype and it was my favorite part of the pie, and the Italian sausage stood out as great. All the other ingredients were fresh but average. Important note: this pie is better when kept simple with a few toppings (I wished the waitress would've suggested this). The pie was good but not really worth the hype or legendary status. Service was decent but could've been better. First, my gf asked the waitress if it was unlimited toppings, and she replied yes, and we took it as you can add as many toppings for a flat price since the menu doesn't put prices for toppings, but turns out they charge per topping. Secondly, the waitress could've suggested simpler toppings or at least warned us since they're the experts. Lastly, the menu is deceptive in that it doesn't mention anything about topping prices. The menu isn't the waitress's fault, but everything was deceptive and not forthcoming at all. I can see why Pequod's is highly ranked by the local community as the best deep-dish pizza in Chicago. It's not overly saucy like Giordano or overly cheesy like Lou Malnati. It takes at least 45 minutes to make, but I appreciate they have personal, small, medium, and large sizes. Make reservations beforehand since it can usually be really crowded, especially over the weekends. Only downsides are that the cheese on the crust is blackened, which they call caramelized, and that the menu doesn't disclose the prices for each ingredient you add (~$4 for vegetables/$5 for meats). read more

My turn to pick and I tried to get reservations at Pequod's Pizza. That failed, so I got take-out pepperoni pizza. When I went to pick it up, I learned why I could not get a reservation. Before 6PM and they were full with a crowd waiting to get in. This is a large pepperoni and costs $33. I gotta say, it was a way above average pie. Good crust, tasty sauce with some kind of high fat content cheese that was luscious. Then the pepperoni, a lot of it and extra strength flavor. The very definition of overrated. I wish I could say my visit was pleasant. The reservation system would not allow me to make a reservation for more than 6 people. This was even though my party had ten people in it. I called a week prior to speak to someone about having the reservation changed to ten people. They said that their reservation system doesn't allow for more than six people, but that if I showed up early for the reservation, there would be a good chance they would be able to accommodate my party of 10. I showed up an hour and a half before the reservation to let the host know about the size of my party size. She very rudely said that there was absolutely no way that they could do that. I thus had to call four people from my party and ask them not to show up. When the host finally seated us, she placed us at the furthest table in the back, where every employee walked back and forth in front of the kitchen. The worst part, however, was that there was a table right in front of us, in the middle of the room, that held 12 total people. That's frustrating to see, especially when the host rudely said that a table of that size wasn't available. There were two other empty booths to the left of that table, and when we asked about them, we were told that other parties had reserved them. Why is it that parties of similar sizes, with reservations at similar times, end up getting different tables? It's especially frustrating when they showed up and we saw that they were both parties of white people. Thus, the people of color get less than ideal tables. Once our pizza order came in, we asked the server for two glasses of beer. That request took 14 minutes. By the time the beer orders came in, the pizza had gotten cold. Choose Lou Malnati's instead. I have had great experiences there. read more

Greetings, Pizza is by far my favorite food. That said, I could easily lose my pizza card because I had not had Pequod's pizza until two years ago. We were invited by another couple to make the trek to the Lincoln Park location (I have since hit the mother ship in Morton Grove...). The Lincoln Park location is cavernous with many dining areas and bar areas. The place was buzzing, and with good reason... I have read about, heard about, and thought about giving Pequod's a try. I wasn't prepared for what would happen next after my first bit of their legendary pie. Pequod's trounced all of my favorite deep dish pizza favorites. To me, Pequod's hits a chord that is so good it stands in its own category of superlative pizza. Their thin crust is admirable, but the true treasure is the deep dish. We enjoyed their house salad to share and we appreciated the on tap beer choices. Service was efficient, courteous, and up to the task of feeding the crowd that descended that night for a pizza frenzy. MUST TRY while in Chicago because this is the IT deep dish place to be. Made to order so it comes out extremely hot, fresh, and cheesy. I would say this is the perfect deep dish with the right cheese and sauce combination. Each pie takes about 35 minutes so be patient and enjoy yourself after. Wow! We did not have a reservation, but I highly recommend you have one before you go! We decided to stop by before heading to the airport. With luggage in tow, we walked up to a long line. When we entered, the greeter asked if we had a reservation and said they had none available. So we walked out defeated and called an Uber. Fortunately, before the Uber arrived, the greeter came outside to inform us that they had a cancellation and we could be seated!! We cancelled the Uber, and we are glad we did! The pizza was gooey and cheesy on the inside with a crispy and caramelized crust. We each got a personal pizza which was the right amount for lunch. There's two levels inside with some booths and some regular seating. My first bite, I found it heavenly! It was so soft, the cheese pull was immaculate, I was floating. So delicious! Took the advice of those in the know and ordered a small pan for the two of us and thank goodness we did! What a pizza! One of the best I've ever had seriously. It was spicy, saucy & cheesy. The crust was slightly charred and just scrumptious. Pequod's tells you that carry out may not be quite the same as it is in the restaurant, but we decided to chance it. We still thought it was amazing so I can only imagine what it must be like right out of the kitchen! Next time, we'll definitely plan our trip around getting to go visit them in person!
