We went to Perro Salado last night for dinner. I asked the host to seat us where we were not near an open window, which she accommodated. Come to find out there was a table of 6 women behind us who were having a good time and subsequently were very loud (it I was out with my girlfriends we would be loud also). We asked to be moved to a quieter table. If you've been to Perro Salada you know it's a bunch of small rooms so it's quirky seating. We were given a table on the upper floor, just right for us. A few minutes after we were settled the hostess whisked by and says come with me. At first, I didn't know who she was talking to (she didn't stop at our table), my husband said she's talking to us. She stood at the side of the room pointed to a table in the corner of another room and said sit there it is quieter. We'll it wasn't quieter because there was a speaker behind my husbands seat, which wasn't too disturbing, but the kicker was there was a huge party in a room very close by that were incredibly loud. Hey we'll live with it. On our way out - we ordered and ate quickly - we see the 2 top table she gave us is now a 4 top with 6 people dining. She didn't move us because it was quieter, she moved us because she wanted the table. She could have explained the situation to us and we would have accommodated. Why do people lie? read more

Tried out this spot for Cinco de Mayo and wasn't too impressed. We ordered a taco tray that came with a margarita mix. Sad to say it was unimpressive, especially for the amount we paid. The shrimp here was amazing, in both the taco and on the tostado! Guac was fresh but could have used a little more salt. The chips were really good though. The waitress was super chipper and sweet. Being a San Diegan I didn't know what to expect in Newport, RI. I'm happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed my experience very much. The staff was extremely friendly. Tuesday nights is half-price entree night from their special menu. I got a scallion waffle with spicy shrimp, black beans, pico de gallo and guac on top. It was fantastic. Very much outside my comfort zone, but I'm glad I branched out. The ladies sitting next to us got the enchiladas and they were raving. The margaritas are great. They have quite a few seating areas, all very quaint inside the converted early 1900's house. Wednesday night is trivia night. I good time. Bring a group. Biggest loser gets to pick a topic for the next week's game. Not sure what the winner gets...I wasn't that lucky. Bottom line: Love this place. Give it a try. This is quite possibly my favorite restaurant in Newport. I would say Perro Salado is a "hidden gem" ...but I'm hearing more and more people mention Perro Salado as their favorite restaurant in town, too. ...it may be tucked away from the main drag, but apparently it's not so hidden! Perro Salado has a great, warm atmosphere; you feel it the moment you walk through the door. The old house is a maze of rooms, dimly lit. On some nights, live musicians set the mood. The chips and salsa and guac appetizer is a necessity. Please don't leave here without experiencing it. Also, a margarita ...or a pitcher of margaritas... is HIGHLY recommended; they're fantastic. The bar is open later so you can always just drop in for some drinks! I've tried several dinner dishes on the menu and have always been completely, utterly satisfied. I recently had a special, the farmer's market salad, which included veggies from local farms. Delicious. I've never had breakfast here but it's certainly on my list of things to do! So. to recap: Perro Salado has everything going for it: great food, drinks, ambiance, music, waitstaff.... GOSH, I wish I was there right NOW! read more

This place is very good! It was a little hard to find at first. It's nestled off down a side street in downtown Newport. The blood orange Margarita was great. The food was also very good. Fresh ingredients are used in both the Margaritas and the food. Not anything like the traditional Mexican food I am used to being from Florida. The only problems were it was a bit cramped and VERY load inside. I wouldn't recommend going if you expect to have a nice quiet dinner. Also, It was a bit pricey so keep that in mind. We tried Perro Salado on a recommendation and was completely blown away! The service is fantastic. If you go during the summer (or Newport Restaurant Week) definitely call for a reservation. If you don't, you may hVe quite a wait. Though if you go to the bar you can have some awesome Sangria and/or Margaritas. The guacamole and chips are HUGE, if there is a small party that could be your entire meal. I choose to have the sticky ribs with a side of beans and rice. It's always more than enough food. The scallops (I think these are a seasonal offering, but not sure) were also amazing. If you're looking for a low cost option (though they are reasonable for the Newport area) try a bunch of appetizers for the table. all of them are great and very large portions. As an alternative you can ask the staff for a recommendation and they will no doubt pick you out an awesome dish! For those that say this isn't Mexican food has never been to Mexico. They serve more traditional style food rather than the taco's and burrito's Americans are used to. Overall, great food and great service! This is my favorite restaurant in Rhode Island! read more

Hard to figure this place out... First off, the prices are a bit steep. Newport, downtown, etc. But still a bit high for what you get. We've been here 3 times now and said the same thing every single time when the bill arrives. We've had 2 dishes that were perfect. Sticky ribs and grilled corn. Order these. Definitely hold up to many other dishes in town. I would come back for these. The rest of the meal was average at best. Guac was fine but not memorable. And both the pork and short rib tostatos and tacos were identically bland. The meat was cooked well, but just without any flavor. Every time. Reliably bland. So how does a place that has such wonderful and complex flavors in the two dishes mentioned above completely strike out with the dishes featured at the core of their menu??? Can't figure out an answer to that one. So I'm not sure what to make of this place. Maybe stick with drinks, ribs, and a one off appetizer or entree. But with dishes being so hit or miss, and prices overall relatively high, you may end up disappointed...as we have been three times now. But do order the ribs and corn. Food, excellent. Service, amazing under the covid circumstances, highly professional staff. Only 4 stars because of a certain situation in which a patron next to our table was grossly over served. After her and her gang of Hyenas had one too many Spicy Margs (delicious), they approached our table insisting we asked they be more quiet in the dining area. One in particular must've had left hungry, because in a cranky snarl she screeched that we "enjoy our boring a** dinner". As we were eating at the same restaurant, this was quite unsettling. We were seated quickly on a busy Sunday night. Three out of four of us dining ordered the mahi tacos and another chose the vegetable quesadilla. None of the entrees come with additional sides so we ordered a side of rice and beans to try. The beans were bland barely any flavor or salt. The mahi was dry for both the blackened and fried diners. The quesadilla tasted great but it had too much cheese. I checked in on yelp to get free chips & salsa but when we got the check they didn't take it off the tab. I'm 100% Mexican on vacation in Newport, and believe me, even after being overseas for so long, I would not think of this place as good. Does it get better than Perro Salado when looking for a funky atmosphere to eat Mexican inspired comfort food? If so I haven't found it. The old house setting and overgrown outdoor courtyard at Perro Salado are comfortable, out of the ordinary, and inviting. The waitstaff is efficient and friendly. My last meal there was accompanied by someone with Crohn's who can't eat onions, peppers, or garlic, another with glucose, vinegar, and shellfish allergies, a third that has another host of dietary restrictions, and a child that will not eat anything served on a plate with any fruits, herbs, seeds or vegetables. All were taken care of with no mistakes, complaints, or dishes going back to the kitchen. We started with the huge portion of chunky homemade guacamole and three colored tortilla and fried plantain chips- delicious though a little bland (which suited most at our table). We had the sweet and spicy ribs (marinated in coca-cola) as an appetizers and the kids had them- and loved them- as a main. My girlfriend's hanger steak was perfectly done and juicy delicious. Others at the table variously ordered the chicken tinga, pork carnitas, and ropa vieja tacos. We shared them around and all were done right and satisfying. The sides of beans and rice were better prepared than your average Mexican spot on the East Coast. The selection of sodas and drinks was extensive, refreshing and well enjoyed. I will definitely be taking my friends and family here whenever they visit Newport. The boyfriend and I decided it was time for a proper dinner date out and chose Perro Salado. This place was packed on Saturday night.. and reservations are certainly recommended. We ended up having to wait just a few minutes for our 8:00 reservation. Located in a stand-alone historic home off the main streets of Newport.. the location is fantastic. Inside is warm and rustic... makes for a wonderful dining experience. Though, I could see some thinking it is a bit too dim inside. Service has always been great on my visits. Back to the food, it seems like the menu here changes often to reflect fresh ingredients. Quite often the sope, emapnadas, enchiladas, and tamale will feature something different each visit. My boyfriend and I started by sharing the chili, sweet potato, and cheese empanadas. SO GOOD. It was so wonderful to find a vegetarian appetizer as an option. We also started with a couple cocktails which were delicious. After that, we opted for a small pitcher (4 - 5 glasses) of Red Sangria.. a real bargain for only $12! I requested the duck tamale for my entree, but unfortunately they had just sold the last one! Luckily my back up choice of seared sea scallops with warm mango-habanero salsa, spinach & coconut rice was on point. Perfect combination of flavors and textures. My vegetarian boyfriend ordered of the Taquiera menu. You can pick enchiladas, tortas, tacos or quesadilla with a selection of fillings. We also shared the Yucca fries. Save room for dessert, too.. the sopapillas are authentic and the flan (flavor changes daily) was fantastic. Prices here are average for Newport, perhaps a tad bit on the high side. They also have a quick serve sister restaurant, El Perrito, on Thames Street. So if you are looking for the same quality of food for a cheaper price.. this is your place (its byob!). read more

John & I had reservations at a special table for 6:45, we get there it's busy as usual, we're cool we go to the bar to wait and have a drink, there is a couple at our table causually taking their time after paying their bill, which have been told 3 times to leave because people were waiting. They ignored the waitress again, John got upset and nicely went over to explain that we were waiting, he walked awayto the bathroom. I could see the woman say we should stay here a few minutes over, I turned around and said "no, that's not cool" they end leaving pissed off we "rushed" them out. Brushed it off. Sooo, their table was cleared but wasn't wiped down, another couple comes in I give up our seats at the bar to stand behind them so they chill while we wait again, I go to put my coat on the back of the chair and "Tanya" the bartender comes running out saying I can't do that becuase the table is reserved and they haven't wiped the table down, I say "Chilllll, it's our table and I'm just putting my coat down. I stand back behind the couple, John comes back in the room goes to put his coat down and "Tanya" tells him not to sit...he's pissed again, then "Tanya" says we have to pay for our drinks before sitting, which I've never done before but whatever...I didn't realized john was so pissed as this point he doesn't tip her on the $10 tab and calls her a "bitch" not out loud just loud enough for her to hear (so what she lost out on $2?) So then FINALLY they sit us down about 10 after 7. (knowing that it takes Perro FOREVER to serve their food, which we know in advance) we're starving ready to order, no menus needed FISH TACOS w/APP of Guac. & Chips, we're waiting, waiting, it's about 7:20 we're cool...then the waitress comes over and says "Sorry, we can't serve you and you have to leave, we're a team and we don't tolorate name calling" in front of everyone!!!!! I was soooooooooooooo pissed off, never in our life have we been kicked out of a place for NOTHING! I know john called her a bitch, because truly she was acting like one. It's was busy, yes, she was slamming drinks trying to keep up and she just seemed fixed on us for some reason. I'm a bartender and sometimes you do get called names, I can easily ignore people, if I know they are going to stay for awhile, unless they are acting like total idiots or distrubing others around them, I would kick your ass out but not over something so petty. Perro Salado had been one of my favorite places for years, even recently celebrated my Bachelorette dinner there. Food is good has great ambience, even my favorite Steve Cerilli plays there on thursday nights but come to realized now, you wait wayyyyyy too long for your food EVERYTIME, I don't want to wait an hour for service whether it be food or the bill and I will not be returning ANYTIME soon. Not that they care but they should we are locals and I will tell EVERYONE about her and the service that was giving. There are many GREAT resturants in town that treat their LOCALS the way they should be treated, espeically during the winter months. So please SPREAD THE WORD and if you know some that works there, especially the Owner, share my story and give them my number or email, I'd be happy to chat! It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I am lowering my rating for Perro Salado from four stars to two. As a woman, a wife, and a yelper, there are certain foodie values I hold dear and it is in this spirit that I am moving forward with my review. While I still absolutely commend Perro Salado for its uniquely inspired decor, willingness to take culinary risks, and whimsical beverage menu, I cannot let this restaurant off the hook for a simply underwhelming recent dinner experience. Alas, after racking my brain for the perfect word choice to describe the flavors, the presentation, the je ne sais quoi, all I can come up with is this: Blah. And gosh, we were so excited to return. On the trip to Newport we dreamed of the duck nachos..the promise of fall entrees...the kick of a Michelada. It's going to be so gooood! we kept saying, our tummies growling. Oh how we were rooting for Perro Salado! Oh how we were! We arrived and soon realized that the duck nachos were not on the menu. Nor were lobster quesadillas. No problemo, we love trying new things...so we decided to start off with the Queso Fondido (with chorizo and grilled onion). Sounded exquisite. But when it arrived, it was just so-so. The cheese wasn't bad, but it didn't really melt either, making the chips that accompanied it somewhat un-dippable. It was more of a thick fondue that needed a bit more heat. And the chorizo? I think there were two small chunks hidden inside. The onions were tasty, but it's hard to give a cheese dish too many stars when the onions are the best part. We remained optimistic. Hey, that's ok! The entrees will come through. Won't they? In a word, NO. They would not. We ordered two to share and both just simply were not good. The first was the pork loin with a maple-chipotle brine. Just writing it sounds so tasty that I have to remind myself that the reality did not live up to the dream. It was tough, people. Tough and bland. My bi's and tri's got a little extra work that evening just trying to get through it. Next were the ropa veija tacos. Wow, were these bad. The beef just didn't taste like anything. My husband ACTUALLY said, "seriously, taco bell has more flavor." OUCH! I can't believe they would use low-quality beef so I have to imagine it just wasn't prepared well. And the real disappointment was that the tortillas were so sopping wet, it completely destroyed the ability to actually eat the tacos like, well, like tacos. We basically just picked at the beef while trying to find a dry corner of the tortilla to pair it with. We had planned on trying a dessert this time, but after the disappointment of the meal we just skipped it. Why throw sugar onto the flames of food sadness? Maybe this was just a bad night, but it really was bad. I hope they shake up the kitchen, bring in a honest taste-taster, and get back to creating cuisine worth remembering for its deliciousness...not for its forgettable-ness. Negative stars! My first time writing a review, and this one is necessary. Came to this place with a group of ppl because of the great reviews I read. Our experience was awful. Food was horrible and expensive. Since there we were a group of 7, 20% gratuity was added to our check that was not deserved. Refills for drinks were not free. We spontaneously decided to go for Mexican in Newport during a visit to the Mansions. In summary, the the short ribs, guacamole, beef tacos and pork fajitas were some of the best we had had anywhere. The restaurant is cozy and in a really interesting historic building and i guess that's the best part... i had the rib appetizer and the ribs had been totally parboiled to where the meat just slides off the bone which is NOT the correct way for ribs to be. you should be able to nibble the meat off of the bone. then the guacamole was loaded w/ diced tomatoes that had as much flavor as pieces of styrofoam.if you cannot procur decent tomatoes then just don't offer them.i had the mahi tacos which were served w/ a totally unimaginative and bland cabbage slaw.i don't mind cryovac mahi but this mahi was tough and again flavorless.also had a side of plantains which were way under ripe,they should be brown and almost caramelized& trust me i know my plantains as i lived in the Caribbean for years.the service was fine but i certainly won't be rushing back there to eat any time soon. read more

This place is a rip-off. It's in a very old house, which could be cool but probably has not seen any cleaning for months. We literally could see the dust off the decor on the wall that was coming down to our food. The crowd definitely has not seen any real mexican food before and just thinks some mix of different food served with avocados and margaritas qualifies as mexican. The food is overpriced, in very small portions and very bland with no seasoning at all - simply not tasty. The service was rudest I have ever seen: on my request to get a hot sauce, the waitress just pointed me to the counter some sauce bottles: "go get it". CLIFFS: Amazing food, fun lively atmosphere - nasty waitress. The worst member of wait staff my wife and I have ever encountered in any establishment. What a fun spot for a couple or small group. This restaurant is buzzing with activity and the somewhat cozy setting adds to the active atmosphere. I went with my wife for date night and while the food and drink were great, we had the nastiest waitress we've ever had. With a different waitress, our experience would have been 4 stars - we really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We had the calamari app, sticky ribs app and fish tacos. Plenty of delicious food for two people. The ribs were the highlight - some of the best ribs I can remember at a restaurant and a decent portion. Once we were seated, the tall attractive waitress wasted no time in making us feel stupid. I asked a very basic Mexican restaurant question - do you have a specialty Margarita? She looked at me with such disgust like I just offended her grandmother. "Well, you can have it with or without salt - is that what you mean?" I then fumbled for words as to what I was getting at - "Frozen?" fell from my lips and her demeanor got worse. "We don't do frozen Margaritas" answered in a rude condescending tone. OK, we're 2 minutes at the table and we're off to a VERY rough start. Besides this waitress, the service staff were outstanding - actually everyone else who tended to our table were really nice and super friendly. So we finish our meal - get the check and pay our waitress with a card. A minute or two passes and my wife realizes that we didn't give her the $10 coupon which was one of the reasons we ventured to this spot. OOPS! I had to go find my waitress in this tiny labyrinth and then ask for her assistance with this coupon - something I really didn't want to do, but ten bucks is ten bucks. She continued with her rude demeanor - "I've already run your card, what do you want me to do?" So I explained it to her and then apologized for the hassle. 5 minutes later she returns my card and gives my wife and me a cold send off as we leave. I apologize again. Not sure if this was just an off night for this waitress or others have experienced this- I'd give this place 2 more stars if it wasn't for the waitress. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Newport. The food is excellent, the service is always on point. It is in a historic building so the ceilings are low and the decor is awesome. I usually get the tostada which is only $10 and so filling, the short rib melts in your mouth. My go to drink is a michelada. I can't wait for my next visit. read more

If you like Mexican food, prepare to be amazed even if you don't like Mexican food I can't imagine not finding something here that will blow your mind. Truth be told, I rarely post on Yelp, but I couldn't hold back after my amazing brunch I had today. Try the spicy tequila in your Bloody Maria. Usually Bloody Mary's aren't spicy enough for me, but this chili infused tequila took it right to the edge without going over. We had chilliquitas and couldn't stop eating even though we were full. The first time I went to Perro Salado was on Valentines Day weekend of 2011, I had the empenadas which were delicious. I was ranting and raving to anyone who would listen about how delicious the empenadas were. After this last visit I will have to take back my words. For those that say the food is authentic....I will have to disagree with you. I am from California, I have been to Mexico, I have Hispanic family members and this is by far a mediocre attempt at Mexican food. Yes, I understand I am in Newport but I just had to get that out there. Moving on... Let me start off by saying empenadas are no longer on the menu. Yes, I will be taking a star off for that. I had the blood orange margarita. It was ok, heavy on the booze (yaay) but not much of a citrus taste to it. I didn't finish it, just couldn't. We ordered the queso fundido. I would not recommend this to anyone..and I love cheese! It's a bowl of super greasy cheese with tiny pieces of chourico and huge chunks of onions. The cheese is not that of a dipping variety. Once it starts to cool, it turns spongy and rubbery and hard to chew. The onions are chopped way too big and there is barely any sausage. The flavors don't mesh well at all, this recipe is a total fail. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. *sigh* It was bad. So bad. The food arrived and I found parts of it cold while other parts were really hot. No bueno. The chicken was dry with no flavor. The tortillas were overcooked and hard and the coating of cheese turned to rubber making the whole thing horrible. The beans tasted like they were straight out of the can. The rice comprised of rice and tomato sauce. No seasoning, no flavor. I don't know who the cook was but they ought to be ashamed of themselves for trying to pass this off as Mexican food. It's not hard to add salt. Start somewhere. The ambiance of the restaurant was great. Candles, the colors, it was kind of homey.
