I honestly can't understand how this place is considered a Persian restaurant. The food is tasteless, stale, and colorless. Speaking only toward what my table ordered: Yogurt trio: no part of any of these yogurts was made in a traditional Persian fashion. The boorani didn't even have spinach in it. The mast o mooseer was straight labne ... and all of them were topped with shredded carrots ?? What? Eggplant Mirza: bitter, overwhelming. Not how it should taste. Saffron chicken: I can guarantee you there wasn't a single ounce of saffron on this dish. The chicken was barely marinated, it was tough, and it lacked the charcoal finish and flavor that is unique to Persian cuisine entirely. Baghali rice - disappointing. Bitter. No aroma. Also... since when is Persian food served with pickled red cabbage and a weird green sauce? Not Iranian at all... and no tahdig on the menu? Ambiance - no Persian tunes. Honestly none of the workers were even Persian. It really lacked the Iranian hospitality. Still on the search for good Persian food in NY. Persepolis was a strong no from me. read more

So instead, it's bland, and although it feels lighter than your typical fare the dishes we got tonight both need a sauce. The lemon chicken tasted like butter and was vacant of all lemon. The Caspia meats were equally as dry and the same flavorless meats slapped on a plate with a faint breeze of what maybe resembles something that might one day hit the taste buds... Just unfortunate they they charge such astronomical fees for a prayer that the food will get better after another bite (it doesn't) Maybe that's harsh but I separated with a lot of money and would have been happier with the halal cart outside. read more

My friend picked this place as he's really into Persian food and this place is wheelchair friendly. Two in our group are in wheelchairs and it's surprisingly hard to find places that don't have any steps and are truly accessible. We started off with the baba and Sambusa for the appetizers. I was not impressed with the appetizers. The sambusa was a bit dry and the baba didn't really taste like much of anything which I was surprised since I normally love eggplant. My opinion of this place changed completely when I tried the lemon chicken, the lemon butter sauce was beyond delicious! I ordered it with the plain basmati rice and I don't really eat rice very often but because of the sauce I just had to keep eating it. Loved all the dishes, especially the ground beef kubideh and the saffron chicken kebabs. The chicken was so moist. I have never tried Persian rice before and the polo baghali and albalo we're divine. Light and buttery at the same time and full of the flavors of their additional components. The faloodeh was the dish that made me so happy, however. Came here on a Monday night with a friend at 7:30pm. The place was half empty which I thought was surprising. Service was impeccable and the food was delicious. We ordered the baba appetizer which was better than I expected since I'm not a fan of babaganoush. This felt denser and more eggplant-y which I liked. For entrees we ordered the lamb shank and the Caspian platter. I deducted a star for the lamb since it was a bit fatty and had some tendons but honestly that's probably just me being nit picky. My friends and I all ordered from the prix fixe lunch menu, which includes a choice of an appetizer, entree, and rice for $22. We split appetizers (Shirazi salad, hummus, and yogurt & cucumber) between the three of us and chose our own entrees. My favorite appetizer was the yogurt - very simple but also indulgently creamy. I chose the vegetarian stew as my entree and it was so so good!! It had a tomato base and tasted like a tangier version of lentil soup. The eggplant also added a delicious smoky flavor. I got the rice with dill & fava beans, and it was some of the most delicious, aromatic rice I've ever had (also paired really well with the yogurt). Really disappointed after my visit here last night. I love Persepolis and have been coming here for the last 6 years. We ordered the Fesenjoon and soltani kebabs - exact same order as always. The fesenjoon came out and looked like oily soup, nothing like it usually does. It usually has shredded chicken in it but this consistency was way different and when I asked why they said they used dark meat instead this time (there was maybe 4 small chunks of chicken in the sauce). We sent it back as it was not what we get every other time we are here. Sucks to see it go downhill as it was one of my favorite restaurants but after last night of this is their new way of making it I'll be going elsewhere. read more

Getting together with two locals I ceded all decision-making to them. Persepolis was chosen as one had eaten here before and liked it. Always up for Persian fare, I enthusiastically seconded the choice. As the first to arrive, literally - the restaurant was almost empty at 6:30 pm on a weeknight - I was a bit taken aback. Surely a good restaurant on the Upper East Side should have a few more people than they did. I waited though, and my dining partners showed up, and the next time I noticed, Perseoplis was full. On a weeknight. For good reason. We kicked off our meal with Hummus ($10), which one of my dining partners said is prepared differently in Iran than elsewhere. I noticed no discernible difference but found it quite good. I also liked the Yogurt & Beets ($9), something unique and just as irresistible as the Hummus. We shared a must-have stew, Khoresht Fesenjan ($20), which was a delightfully different melange of shredded chicken, pomegranate, and walnuts in a preparation that was somehow sweet without being cloying (a hard act to pull off for an entree). Ground Beef Kubideh ($21), my must-have dish when I encounter this cuisine, was an equally satisfying version made with ground, aged sirloin and accompanied by a choice of salad or rice. Choose the Polo Albalo rice option; it's laden with sour cherries and a wonderful accompaniment. There's lots of competition up in this neighborhood and though there's nothing particularly remarkable about the interior or service, Persepolis' food was satisfying and filling. Scrambling for a place for lunch we settled on Persepolis. It is middle eastern/iranian food which I don't eat too often. Seems like they have a lunch special for $19 prixe. You get to choose an appetizer and lunch. The problem was I didn't like anything on the prix fixe menu. I ordered a la carte and started with the beets with yogurt for an appetizer. It was a funky combination so I could only eat half of it. Not my thing. For lunch I had the falafel salad. It is not much of a salad it is literally 4-5 falafel on some lettuce. Found this hidden gem while walking the streets of NYC on New Years Eve weekend. I was raised in Iran so I am very tough to please when it comes to Persian food unless it's prepared by my dear mother. Very familiar atmosphere, extremely warm & friendly. Had a very pleasant experience going through the menu, ordering and explaining every single item to my girlfriend. Overall, we feel fortunate to have stumbled upon this lovely hot spot in the heart of the Big Apple. Appetizers: Borani - Don't be alarmed by the mixture. Borani is a perfect blend of homemade yogurt mixed with spinach and just a hit of garlic. Add fresh baked bread straight from the oven and it is a must try appetizer. Soup: Ash - This not unlike any regular soup. Ash a traditional Persian style soup mixed with herbs & mixed beans. This is a difficult dish to master and Persepolis did exactly just that. If you're a fan of soups, this is a must try. Entrees: Ground Beef Kubideh - This is one of the most popular dishes in Persian cuisine. Skewers of beautifully marinated ground sirloin kebabs served with perfectly cooked white rice garnished with saffron. I am very particular about this. Personally I prefer the meat to be a bit leaner that it was. However the dish did not disappoint. Stews: Khoresht Gaimeh - One of my all time favorite stews growing up as a kid even till this day. A delightfully delicious stew made with beef, split peas, cinnamon & dried lime. Don't be alarmed by the combination of flavors. Together they blend into a perfect mixture of flavors served with your choice of different rice. Personally I would have preferred a bit more broth in the stew as well as more beef. With more broth, the beef chunks soak up all the flavors that when mixed with the rice make each bite just perfect. read more

Went last night during weekend of Nowrooz and restaurant looked very decorated and is very nice in general. Staff was very helpful in getting us a table when we didn't have a reservation. Food: Apps got the Dolmeh which was an A+ and the Mirzagasamey, "Eggplant Mirza" on the menu and it was also very good. Meals we got the Beef Soltani and veggie ghormeh sabzi. Very unique that you can choose which style of Rice you want and they have numerous variations of styles of rice. Got the zhereshk polo which was very good. I have been ordering here for almost 3 years now. I have never had an issue with their food. When my family comes to visit this is where I insist to take them for dinner. Today I ordered grilled onions as part of my order and there was an onion with a clear ridged bite mark in the batch. I was so disgusted. At first I couldn't believe my eyes I thought maybe it was just a cut part of a onion, but no at closer look you see ridged teeth marks as though they used left over onions from someone's plate and regrilled it to put it in a delivery order. I called to let them know, not to even ask for a refund but to tell them what was going on so they would fix it. The manager got defensive, and told me never to order from them again. Disgusting.
