Needed some breakfast, something fierce. I was with some impatient people so chose the nearest joint. I went in with low expectations. Walking in I saw a lot orange juice being passed around so I'd be remised not to partake. And it is fresh squeezed, slightly sour which is expected. I ordered scrambled eggs with toast, bacon, and home fries. Toast was likely Home Pride or some other soulless sliced bread that has been sitting on a shelf for months. It was flat, lifeless and tasteless. Eggs were your standard hotel buffet style. Overcooked, creating that rubbery skin with a bland egg flavor. Home fries were decent slightly crispy with a soft center, best thing on the plate. Bacon was crispy and boring. My friend ordered the pancake with banana. It was not fluffy, but thin and spongey so all the syrup got absorbed quickly. No real flavor other than the banana. I will say that they did provide real maple syrup, which was nice. One star might seem a bit harsh. But I could have made something better at home for cheaper. So why bother with a place like this? If you can make decent toast and eggs, yes you should avoid this place and places like it. Furthermore, NYC has infinitely better breakfast joints to visit. Even a food cart would be more worthwhile especially considering the price point. read more

I give this place a big thumbs up for decor, location, clean restrooms, friendly staff and a broad menu. I give it an "eh" for the efficiency and the quality of food. It definitely didn't match the prices. Keep in mind, however, this is New York and food isn't cheap. I had the Eggs Florentine with a mocha frappe and breakfast potatoes. Everything was good, but it was about $26 for just those two items. At a fancier restaurant, I wouldn't have batted an eye, but this was basic diner food. All the servers/staff were friendly and hospitable despite the breakfast rush. It did seem crowded and very busy, so our wait time to receive our coffee and other drinks was longer than we would've liked it to be. I liked the charm of the place. It looked like it could be a bustling cafe in a movie. Really. It was a classy establishment. And to mention the bathrooms again ... I am so happy when I find a clean, accessible restroom in NYC. This place had that. Overall, I'd recommend it if you're at the station and need a quick (well, relatively quick) bite to eat. Went here with high hopes because of all the great reviews I've seen online. My family and I went to eat an early dinner and it was empty so we had no problem getting a seat. The service was good and the staff was friendly. However, the food was sub-par and tasted like something I could throw together easily at home. The gnocchi was a bit chewy but okay and it really just wasn't anything to write home about. The rest of my family enjoyed their food which were the waffles and the strip steak. On top of this mediocre experience was that we came across a certain bug that crawled around the table and all over the place. I met my brother there for dinner. We both fell in love with the ambient lighting, the reds, golds, burnished wood of a time ago. The place is lit like a cozy retreat from everything!!!! Soft amber glow all over. Booths aplenty!!!! The booths are on a raised perimeter platform with table seatings in the middle. We both ordered the fish and chips platter with calamari as the appetizer. Peoples ............ I love calamari and this was definitely one of the best!!!!! And the best part........???? NO SQUIGGLIES !!!!!!!!!! You know...... you get the rings usually and those disgusting squiggly pieces...... But not here!!!!!!!! They ONLY serve the rings!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!! Wandering around, I spotted Pershing Square under a bridge across the street from the train station and mistook it for a counter service, quick breakfast joint. What a surprise to walk in and find that it was a very large, charming sit-down restaurant. The place gave me the immediate feeling of walking into the past, a time when train travel was the norm and people dressed up to travel. The walls and windows are hung with heavy striped curtains and the steel beams of the bridge are exposed. We were seated toward the back, in a good spot to watch the comings and goings of the staff among the tightly packed tables. Most of the tables were full. I started my Saturday morning breakfast with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and a cup of coffee. Both were incredibly fresh and tasty and I was instantly aware of Pershing Square's focus on quality. The glass was thick and heavy. You know how cheap glassware looks dull after a few washings? It gets scraped up and even though it's clear, there's just something hazy about it? The glassware at PS SPARKLED in the sunlight. The flatware felt heavy in my hand. I ordered eggs with a side of ham. My boyfriend had a western omelet. The potatoes were creamy and spicy with crisp edges. My eggs were exactly how I like them. Our waitress was friendly and knew the menu. She commented that we must not be New Yorkers because we were too nice. I don't have a problem with that! She knew just when to approach our table and I got the impression that the staff at PS moves with symphonic precision. Even though it was brunch, we ordered desserts. The dessert menu is varied and spectacular. I had the Strawberries Mille Feuille, which I can't pronounce but I gleefully ate. My boyfriend had a rich chocolate raspberry cake. We were staying at hyatt next to this place so for breakfast it was a very convenient location. Coffee and matcha drinks were good but I really liked the burrata avacado toast. A lot of people complaining about prices at this place which I didn't find too unreasonable for dinner in the heart of NYC, that being said this is by no means a fancy restaurant (they serve water and beer in plastic cups). Our waiter was very friendly and checking on us, not too often but just enough. I ordered the penne mushroom and it was pretty mediocre for a pasta dish. I came here for brunch after the original restaurant we were heading to told us there was a 1 hour wait. We were seated quickly and the restaurant is very large! This is a good place to eat around Grand Central. Food is good, pretty average, but all your standard breakfast options are available. Staff was courteous and overall it was a pleasant experience. We were with another couple and asked to split the bill in half. Each of our separate bills had the typical "suggested gratuity " at the bottom--18%, 20%, 25%. If you're not paying attention and/or had a few drinks, you may not notice and leave a tip of double what you intended. This is just a matter of how they program it, so no real excuses. Came here for a business meeting. The place is very overrated. I assume because of its location. Upon our arrival, we were seated by the hostess. The waitress came out right away and brought us some waters. As I drank my water, I noticed it had hair in my glass. I was disgusted. What sets Pershing Square apart however, is its location and unique placement built under and into the Park Avenue viaduct that goes around Grand Central. The main entrance to GCT is directly across the street (42nd), making it convenient for commuters. Instead, they had a split pea soup on the specials, so she ordered that. She thought it was all right. We also ordered some goat cheese frittata? This one was not bad if you happen to like fried goat cheese. This was also from their specials. We shared that but didn't finish the plate. I had a goat cheese and beet salad too. Everything was ok. I like the fact that this restaurant is easily accessible from Grand Central Terminal. It's located right outside the terminal's front entrance, directly across 42th Street. This restaurant offers better options than what's available inside GCT's food court (i.e.; Shake Shack). I like the interior decor. It's in the same style as Grand Central Station, hence it's got a cool historic steampunk style (i.e.; look at the ceiling and count the exposed rivets). I like the fact that two rows of windows line both sides of the restaurant and therefore let in lots of natural sunlight. That is a rarity in NYC. I like the fact that the bathrooms are generally clean. Again, that's a rarity in "dirty" NYC. Regarding food, I've never had a bad meal here. The food isn't anything super special but it's always reliable. Eh maybe anything tastes good after a two hour train ride from Connecticut though. Anyway, I've eaten lunch here several times with friends/family and never heard any complaints. The only thing I don't like are their prices. You're looking at roughly $18 for a burger or a full chicken salad. So in summary, this is mostly an out-of-convenience restaurant and not necessarily a destination restaurant. Save your destination restaurant for elsewhere and later in the night. However it does have a lot going for it and it does make for a nice start to a big day of walking in the city. Once the menus had been dropped our eyes were wide with disbelief that pancakes (usually never more than 8 bucks) were $17 !! Like who the hell paid $17 for pancakes?. And once we saw them coming to tables we knew it wasn't worth the money. We ordered food and when it came it was incorrect. (Which took an extra 20 minutes to fix). Our waters were never refilled our waters until we were about to leave. And the waiter messed up our tickets. When we asked to speak to a manager we waited over 15 minutes and no one came. We ended up paying the bill and leaving. My advice would be to not go to this place at all for any kind of brunch or breakfast. First up, take this review with a grain of salt. We came in the morning of our flight back to KC from NYC after a night of celebrating a little too much - so some of this review is heavily influenced by how we were feel before we came in. The location was amazing - a couple of blocks from our hotel and close to Grand Central Station. We were seated immediately after we walked in and then things started to not go so well. We ended up waiting 10 minutes before we even got water. Once we got our waters things finally got much better. I ordered the lox bagel and my boyfriend had a fairly standard breakfast (eggs, sausage, potatoes). Overall not bad, but honestly for the price everything was just...ok.
