I live so close to Pesche's, I can walk there & back, even carrying home a "haul" I couldn't resist. However, I rarely go there any more, regardless of how I got there, for a few reasons..., [1] the prices are way above & beyond the norm--what makes it worse is that Pesche's DOES NOT ACCEPT RETURNS!! Yes, customers in ANY type of business can be obnoxious & destructive idiots, think they're entitled, wanting something for nothing and will lie to get it, and are often 'up to no good'. But those that don't fit into those categories, especially the locals who are also "regulars," are very turned off by the Policy so have either stopped going, or are VERY hesitant and leery when they do. I would go for supplies until I realized I can shop online for most--with the exception of Pesche's potting soil, which, IMO is excellent and the price is very reasonable (probably because I buy the VERY large bags), & Bonide Systemic Insecticide Granuals--They're the absolute best I've ever tried, not just in quality but they also do not send up some God-awful smell like others have whenever you water. Seriously, I've had 100 plants in my house at any given time for the last 40+ years--when Pesche's told me about it years ago, it soon became the only one I'll use! I usually take my sun-loving plants outside from spring for as long as weather permits so I use this before I take them out and before I bring them in. It's not necessarily cheap but if you care about your plants, it's a must-have product and well worth it! [2] I have found insects in the indoor house plants more than once or twice, even after I thought I thoroughly examined them prior to purchasing them! IMO once is too many! When I complained they blamed it on the customers. Yeh, right-I don't think so. Now I will only buy the small "cuttings" size--I think they're $2.99. Those seem to be a safer alternative. read more

We bought some plants from Pesche's in the spring, planted them, and come summertime, they aren't dead. Woohoo! Some of this might be because we followed instructions when planting and have good soil, but even with those measures taken, if you buy an unhealthy plant, it will die no matter how well you care for it. Also, we have a reputation around here for killing plants, so I am now convinced that Pesche's sells only healthy, hardy plants to its customers. Unfortunately, there's a lot of emphasis on and promotion of non-native, invasive plant species, just like at most garden centers around here. I understand the "tropical" department is really meant to be houseplants, but there were plants like Japanese Barberry that are meant to grow outside but are invasive and dangerous to grow in your yard, as they'll likely spread to other areas and crowd out native plants. They do also sell non-invasive alternatives to these plants--for example, Ninebark is similar--but I haven't seen employees actively promoting these better alternatives. In fact, there are signs encouraging people who want to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to purchase flowers from a list Pesche's has devised, and on that list are several invasive flowers alongside native species. I understand that there's a demand for these dangerous plants, but I feel like if garden centers actively promoted local species (and after talking with the staff when planning our own flowerbed, we know they are knowledgeable enough to do this), the demand for exotic invasive plants would decrease. Aside from that, Pesche's is a great place with a lot of history and a lot of inventory. Coyote problems? You can purchase humanely-harvested coyote urine to scare off the furry critters from a rack right underneath a picture of JFK taken when he was in the area for a parade. Need a trellis? There are many to choose from, and while you browse you can wonder if a German prisoner of war stood where you're standing during WWII , because down River Road a bit there once existed a prison camp who used Pesche's for their work program. (That's right, if you lived in Des Plaines in the 1940's and had flowers delivered to you, the delivery man may have been a Nazi spy.) Do you need window decals to decrease bird strikes? You can buy them here while contemplating the hard work and dedication that goes into handing a business like this down from generation to generation. This place gets crazy busy at certain times, and you'll see police directing traffic in and out of the parking lot. My advice? Stay away on those days. Somebody is likely to tackle you in a greenhouse over the last petunia tray on Mother's Day. You can come back next weekend; there will be more. In fact, if they don't have what you want, you can ask in person or call to find out when what you need will be in stock. We, for example, showed up two weeks before they put out their coneflower sproutings, and they told us exactly when to come back to get some. Overall, I'd like to give Pesche's five stars because I love family-owned businesses with excellent service and great inventory, but I don't think I can as long as they're encouraging people to buy plants that destroy local ecosystems and/or require excessive chemical fertilization and watering to survive in Illinois. Signs or pamphlets promoting something like xeriscaping instead could drum up just as much business without imperiling the environment. read more

I didn't care for any of the on line catalogue arrangements offered so called their flower shop and spoke with a lovely woman who promised me that they would do a good job. Was just looking for some suggestions on ideas and before we came out there this weekend and before I could barely get my question out, was cut off and practically hung up on. Goodbye pesches you have lost your job as the Malloy family's go to flower place. Let me start by saying what my sitch was. My ex's mother who I was EXTREMELY close with (lived with for 6 years in her basement.) called me and told me that she had pancreatic cancer and was having surgery and just wanted to call me and let me know how much I meant to her *tear :'( * so clearly I was very upset and worried. I ordered a beautiful vase with a teddy bear hugging it and pretty purple flowers. I found out that she would be getting out early so I called pesches early in the am and they assured me that if she was not there anymore they would let me know. So that was December and I waited to hear how she was doing for months and figured it was rude to ask her if she got my flowers so finally a few weeks ago I write her a Private message to ask how she was doing and inquired as to if she liked the flowers and of course she hadn't gotten them. She is from Alabama and definitely has southern charm so I knew if she had gotten them she would have thanked me OR something! So I call pesches and explain the situation and she tells me OH well that was in december...... Me: ok well I payed for them and this lady wouldn't lie about it. Her: well it's gonna take some time to figure this out I'll call you a different day. So she calls me like the next day or so and says ok well we can send something and I tell her no you will send what I payed for that you didn't deliver on. After dealing with a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE attitude she says ok. I was happy to hear from my friend and she told me that she had received them, yet extremely pissed to hear the guy freaked her out by basically hounding her for a tip do bad he nearly walking into her house behind her! What really got me was that I worried this whole time if she was ok and do not talk to my ex so I just had to wait it out then deal with that tude! Whatever gardening thing, plant, or shrub you might be looking for, chances are you'll find it here. The place is enormous, spanning most of the triangular region bounded by River Road, Rand, and the train tracks. The bedding plants are always nice and not wilted or pre-killed, as usually you see at Jewel, Home Depot or other chain store. I would not buy their overpriced soil or mulch, but I love their potted perennials, hanging baskets, and wide variety of decorations for the garden. It is also great to come in the fall and pick out spring bulbs - one or many, rather than settle for the 6 or 12-packs of mixed bulbs in other stores. Horrible Service and unfortunately does not take blame for their mishaps. Was told one thing over the phone and then another person answered and basically called me a liar. When I asked for a manager, Claudia got on the phone and was so matter of fact and stated that her emloyees were not to give guaranteed times so therfore it didnt happen. I explained that they did and was told "do you want me to cancel the order." Ruined my whole surprise for my wife. If they know they are that busy they should not take additional orders. BEWARE OF FALSE PRICES!!!!! On two different occasions I was disappointed with Pesche's. First I ordered my wife some flowers for mother's day through FTD flowers. They came from Pesche's. The quality was poor and not even a week later died. I went in to purchase some shrubs and bushes since I saw they have a nice selection. Went in spoke with Alex who was very helpful and knowledgeable about the plants. I picked up several plants for my garden and wanted to check out. To my surprise none of the prices match the signs that these plants were standing on. The sign said 57 and the plant was 74, another sign said 34 and the plant was 39. Not a huge difference but when you buy 10 plants it would amount to over a 100. I am not a complainer but asked to speak to manager to see if we can resolve the issue. After waiting for about 30 minutes to speak to the "boss" and explaining my case he told me that there different plants from different growers and there is nothing that he can do. Since I already wasted my time on picking the plants, I did not want to go home empty handed so I asked for free delivery. He agreed and I bought them. I have a big yard and several more plants to buy and Peshe's will not get my business. Hopefully the owner will read this and realize that false advertising and bait and switch is not the way to do business. read more

This is probably the only garden center in the Chicago area that has quality flowers for planting beyond July 1st. Many of us need to fill in space and rely on Pesche's for their high quality. The geraniums are unparalleled. It takes me about 40 min to drive each way, but so worth the effort. And pay no attention to the previous reviewer that says that the staff doesn't know anything. They are very attentive and informative. And, a big plus- they'll be glad to put plastic in your car and load it up. read more

I usually go here in early to mid June. I also go here for their Martha Washington geraniums, because they offer a great selection of colors. These bloom all summer long and look fantastic as a stand-alone in a large container or large urn. Their prices are not "cheap" so expect to drop some serious $$$ at this place. Also, you can find unique plants that you will NOT find at your local Home DePot garden center. I am passionate about gardening, creating unique and beautiful containers myself, and doing my own hanging baskets. I get this passion from my Dad who is an award-winning gardener (in the area of roses). I love their variety of perennials and annuals, which provide a pop of color when nothing else is blooming. The lines can get long at the end of May and even the day before Mother's Day, but they move quickly and they have plenty of young college students helping out at the registers. I do not know of any professional nursery that will "Guarantee" their trees or any other species and provide a money-back guarantee. They have beautiful, lush, healthy hanging baskets and sell lots of "Proven Winners" (these are annuals). I love the variety of Coleus plants too. Last year, I combined the dark maroon with lime green coleus plants for a pop of color in a small area of our backyard garden. These do very well in early morning sun and need shade in the afternoon. These are lush and grow to 12 inches in height. They look fantastic in our garden. If you pinch off the flowers they will bloom again throughout the summer months. I purchased a white fragrant Japanese crab apple tree from here about 10 years ago. My father helped me plant it and it is the centerpiece of our front yard. We have several mature trees on the side of our house (we have a corner lot that is huge in Chicago). This crab apple tree blooms beautifully every Spring. It is now a mature tree. Every time someone walks by our house I notice people standing there admiring it and taking in a deep breath to get a whiff of the light, sweet fragrance that it produces. The flowers are white with a deep pink center. Every time that tree blooms I think of my Dad. I also purchased a deep purple Peony Tree (which is now 5 ft tall and 4 ft wide) about the same time. The flowers are about 10 inches wide (they look like giant pom-poms). Both have thrived in our front yard, and have provided years of beautiful blooms. I know Spring has officially arrived when our crab apple tree and peony tree burst open with beautiful blooms. I have never experienced any issues with anything that I have purchased at Pesche's Garden Center. This is a family-owned business that is now in their fourth generation. It was started over 50 years ago, and it is still going strong today. If you have never been here, and are seeking high quality unique items for your yard and/or containers or "hard to find" items, check it out. I bought bulk gardening soil/compost here 3 weekends ago. I was sent a few different places in the large store to find the right person to talk to--Alex-- then was ultimately told I could just purchase at the register. I was directed to whom I wad told was the manager for that area, ordered, and paid for delivery for the next Saturday, but not before advising that our raised garden need was in our backyard (not reachable by truck) and asked for confirmation that the dirt could be placed there. She confirmed that it could and would be delivered to the back yard, and wrote as much on my receipt, then gave me green flag markers to indicate the correct delivery location. Next Saturday rolled around and, after not receiving a delivery or receiving any calls by about 2pm, reached out to the store to confirm the delivery would still be coming; the operator directed me to Alex. He told me that he called earlier in the week to tell me that they would not deliver the dirt to our back yard and would not be delivered at all on the 12th because of weather, but left no messages. When I told him how disappointed I was that I was planning to use the dirt to garden the next morning on my first Mothers Day and explicitly asked about delivery to the back yard before purchasing from another manager--and after trying to find him, emailing the store, and leaving my phone number with another employee in the nursery--he told me that he was the manager, not her, and she had no authority to make this guarantee. I don't understand how I was supposed to know that, given she had the authority to sell it to me and schedule the delivery. After being clear that he was not going to honor the purchase agreement I made with the store, I told him I wanted my money back. He told me sometime would call me within 30 minutes regarding a refund. They did not. I emailed the store; no reply. I called and left a detailed message for the billing/accounting department; no reply. I just started the credit card dispute process yesterday after feeling like I had no other option. I am blown away by this total disregard for the purchase agreement I made, how unprofessional Alex was to me and toward his colleagues, and that nobody seems to have any interest in helping me resolve. This place is beautiful and the selection is vast, but their business practices are awful. Chris, I am hopeful that you address this issue directly to process my refund and make sure none of your other customers are treated so badly. read more

Just how important is a home garden? I grew up on Kedzie Avenue in Chicago and we had a concrete backyard. My mother had house plants, but no veggies. When I bought my house, my dad said he would help me with a real garden. My mother's dad had a victory garden at Foster and St. Louis Avenues, so I was knew what fresh vegetables could be. Lucky for me, one of my customers and friends was John Carr. He had experience with food research and intensive gardening and he advised me on setting up my garden. Tons of dirt were moved around and gravel was buried 12 inches below the surface. Worn out rail tie were collected and things were In place. So what works best? Veggies from seed or from a garden center? I have found the best place to buy my tray of veggies and it is Pesche's in DesPlaines. I generally don't take a great number of photos, but last year my grape tomato plants just blew away any notion of plant production. One plant in particular produced over 500 grape tomatoes and that inspired me to get out the camera. Now, I have to confess that I do rotate my crops every year, I cover my garden with all the fallen leaves on my property in the fall and I do not walk on the garden surface. But every plant that I bought at Pesche's last year exceeded my expectations. Now this year, the grape tomato plants are exploding. They are all over six feet tall and I hope and pray that the bees that I see in the garden don't miss any of the little yellow buds. I am estimating that I will have over 2,000 grape tomatoes this year. The early girls are looking good and the roma tomatoes are coming in. I will have many happy neighbors this year. They literally have any type of plant, flower, tree, shrub, lawn decoration, etc..you may be looking for. It is extremely large with multiple green houses. Employees are very friendly and helpful. It is very organized. In my opinion, they are a little pricey with some of their plants and flowers, but they are all wonderful quality and you will find things here that you won't find somewhere like Home Depot. I ordered flowers here for Mother's Day at my Mom's recommendation. The reviews looked good, and after talking to a very friendly, helpful person when placing my order, I was feeling good about the decision. They provided a very large delivery window, but hey, I understood since it was one of the busiest days of the year. However, my mother NEVER got the flowers. They did leave her a few messages to check to see if she received them, so it seems that perhaps they suspected something was up, and they were trying to be proactive (they get points for that). When my Mom told them she never received the flowers they did offer to upgrade her delivery, but sadly, she told them to just credit me for the order. I don't think they should have allowed her to decide that since I was the one who ordered the flowers. I wanted her to have flowers, so they should have asked ME whether I wanted the order credited or not (subtract points for that). (In their defense, we have had delivery problems before from another flower shop that tried to deliver to her house---I'm not sure if there's something weird about her address, but it seems that flower shops can't find her.) read more

Their customer service is poor. I was in their shop over the weekend because they had sent me a customer appreciation sale email - great! So, I go in and find out that the advertisement for an additional 20% on sale items is misleading at best. In the checkout, I tried speaking to Lynnet about the true cost of some items that I had picked out, and really received poor customer service from her. She was at another register, couldn't be bothered with walking over to where I was checking out, even though there wasn't anyone else checking out ANYWHERE, and was haphazardly yelling / explaining to me how the sale works. She had a really poor attitude as well. Really!? I drove 40 minutes to specifically go to this store. Go somewhere else for your plant needs! Speaking with one of the manager afterwards on the telephone for 15min, she stopped short of apologizing for my experience, and said that she hates doing sales, as they always have problems with them, and don't normally do them. I was looking for a specific shrub that nobody seemed to carry.. Found Pesche's online, called them, got knowledgable answers on the phone and went there today to buy my shrub. They have an enormous selection of all sorts of plants. Gigantic! Not the cheapest though. It was very busy today but still the customer service was great. I live out of state, but have relatives that live in the Des Plaines area. I needed to order a plant for a funeral, and since I am not familiar with any of the florists, I didn't know who to chose. Rather than order FTD, I wanted to pick someone local that I know would get it there in time. This name sounded familiar to me, as they had pointed it out on our last spring visit that they buy a lot of garden plants here. I just wanted to say that when I called to place my order, the lady I spoke to was VERY kind and helpful, promised delivery in time for the funeral, as it was close by she said. My family actually sent me a picture of the beautiful plant they received. Sometimes a business needs to hear a compliment as well as a complaint. Purchased a spray of flowers for my fathers funeral. They were late arriving!! For one spray at $600.00 they said it was a busy season. You would think regular deliveries could wait. Extremely disappointed with Pesche's. When I called, apparently she tired of telling me the driver had other deliveries, so she hung up on me. Great job Pesche's. The person I spoke with was Claudia. Just tried to exchange 2 hanging baskets that died in less than 2 week. Got to the store and was refused a exchange from both the cashier as well as the manager. Flowers we suppose to be in direct sunlight as well as daily watering which both were given to the flowers. I find it absolutely crazy that they would not exchange them. Pesche's has an excellent selection of the best flowers available in the Chicagoland. I come here every spring (mid May) to get the best choices of hard to find flowers for the garden/landscaping. The prices are very commensurable to the quality, meaning what you get is what you pay for and that is quality plants/flower. I have ordered many bouquets for birthdays and special occasions and I was NEVER disappointed. No where else in Chicago or the Suburbs have I see the precise quality of these flowers. I've never had them deliver anything, because I usually don't trust any delivery types. Overall great place to get high-quality flowers for an occasion. Another favorite nursery of mine is Platt Nursery in Bloomingdale on Lake Street if you're in the western suburbs. read more

Yesterday I bought many vegetables and flowers. Today when we were planting, we realized we had 2 bush cucumbers rather than bush beans. I went back today to exchange for bush beans. The lady supervisor was nasty making me feel stupid saying they were in their own section. She allowed me to go get 2 bush beans. When I went to the section that had the sign for bush beans, the trays were bush cucumbers. I got Kris from the garden section and explained what happened. She came to see and apologized saying this was not my fault. When I went back up front to explain to the supervisor lady and do the exchange, she didn't even offer an apology. I wish I got her name. The interesting thing about Peshes is that they have the potential to be a great place to purchase flowers. The thing that holds them back is that the management and people who work in the florist shop show NO COMPASSION. I have lived in the area for years and have gone to Peshes many times. Not only are the plants overpriced they may or may not produce. When I tried to return a hanging plant that I had just bought for a stupid $20, because it looked horrible even though I had watered it everyday--I was told by they owner that I should have watered it "twice a day and that they would not do anything financial-- in other words- no refund." I said maybe you should put a tag on it that says that. He never smiled-he was And is very cold. If anything I would think being a business that needs customers --customer service would be important to them, but in my experience Pesches Flowers's does not they care. Another time a few years ago-- this is way before Covid my young child had to use the bathroom. They had allowed people to use the closest bathroom in the past, me having brown skin , and with a young child was in a hurry to help my child who really needed to go-- the older immigrant ladies behind the counter In the floral shop showed absolutely NO COMPASSION for me or for my young child. I WAS SHOCKED BY THEIR DISREGARD. When I see them they visually have a look of sustain on their faces for me- a browner face then theirs. Which let's be know just how DEEP THE RACISM IS AT PESCHES. --that it better for their jobs for them to look down on me then to be kind. PESCHES IS A RACIST Establishment. Here's the thing- I believe you reap what you sow. When you don't treat people well, something is not going to go well for you. I believe the only reason they are still open is because of they are benefiting from the hard work of others. SHAME ON YOU Mr & Mrs. Pesches!! It's systemic. I don't know if you have faith- is it greed that drives your coldness? Almost every time I have come into your business, I am disrespected and devalued in some way. We arrived 10 minutes before the store closing on a Saturday afternoon. We didn't know the closing time and we were there for 5 minutes . EVERY person that works there said " what do you want, we close in 5 minutes". I asked for 5 minutes to look around...because there were 3 items I have gotten from there before and wanted to buy again. Within a minute they TURNED THE LIGHTS OFF in the store even where I was looking. SO RUDE! When I had items in my hand an associate asked me to bring them to the counter so she could start to add them up before I was ready. REALLY?... I have worked in retail for 18 years and wouldn't even THINK of behaving this way. Needless to say I spent 90 % less than I would have. What retailer turns away business? This is my first review as I am a very passive person however I am compelled to speak out. I have been going to Pesch's for years no more . I purchased a pair of garden shoes for my daughter (wrong size my bad) having a full schedule I was unable to get back to return them for 4 weeks . Not a Pesch's a 2 week return policy not even store credit. I will never go back. Watch your selves bad unfair practice. read more

If there was a way to provide no stars I would. Ive always wanted to write a review and this was the first time I've been so moved to actually sit down and write one. Let me start by saying I has the displeasure of working with this establishment for a work related project. Our company has been working with Pesche's for YEARS and have had a great relationship until now. Mellisa S. was right , the woman (or women I believe there are two) who answer the phones have the WORST customer service. I wonder if she thinks she works for the president of the United States instead of the owner of a flower shop. Of the 8 times I called , she never once let me speak to Chris (the manager) even though we've always worked with him frequently in the past. She never missed an opportunity to tell me " he is too busy to address this do you know how many emails he gets a day? no he cannot help you" I'm just disturbed at the amount of coporate dollars spent in this establishment that I received such poor treatment. But its fine, apparently they're are entirely too busy to care, so maybe it is helpful that that we take our business away from them, as well as ALL of our other offices. read more

Pesche's plants are the best in quality and prices. Their greenhouses are sights to behold especially the various colors. I especially love their healthy looking gerianums as well as other plants including tomato, herbs, roses, bulbs. Everything is well cared for also adds great beauty to pots, planters etc. Visit the store for soil, supplies and all gardening needs. Pesche is top rated. read more
