brought my dog here for grooming for the first time and there was only one groomer working, and he seemed very stressed. he said it would take 4 hours because he had 4 other dogs to do as well. i'm not sure why they would allow appointments to be booked when there is not enough coverage. I then got a call 45 min later that he had to stop the service because my dog was biting. fair enough, i understand that, and i came to pick him up. he told me that if he had more time he could've probably worked with my dog better but he didn't have the time. i don't blame this groomer at all, PetSmart needs to have better scheduling. read more

BETTER OF THE PETSMARTS (4 stars) Specially this location for Santa Photos for our pets... you can tell they put effort (unlike other PetSmarts). I've been to a handful of PetSmarts in San Diego area and I feel this location was the best thus far (obviously, La Jolla). Not going to lie, I'm more of a Petco shopper but when it comes to Santa Photos (Petco stopped doing them and they do have a better backdrop) - we resort to coming to PetSmart. The past couple years, I haven't been too ecstatic about Santa photos, even trying different locations. Why not try PetSmart in La Jolla?! 1) way better Santa and backdrop than all the other PetSmarts I've been too (there was thought into it) 2) they have little PetSmarts Xmas merch they gave away - little bandana and some treats while you wait in line (other PetSmarts gave absolutely nothing) 3) they placed the Santa photo area in a corner that was suitable that was special and clean and away from the traffic of customers (unlike other PetSmarts it's in the back of an isle) 4) weren't rushing you to get it over with. They were patient as dogs are scared of Santa and run away. Instead of crying screaming babies, it's whimpering dogs trying to run away from Santa. Big Santa was super nice and chill. Pet hotel. Extremely disappointing and stressful experience. My dog did not receive the care promised. I am writing this review because my recent experience at this PetSmart Hotel was honestly awful from start to finish and I want other pet owners to know what to expect. I had no idea that dogs are not taken outside to go to the bathroom unless they have, "not gone in a very long time". My dog is completely house trained and has never gone to the bathroom indoors so this information added worry and confusion to the situation. My dog did not want to go inside the room so I stepped through the first set of doors with him. The moment I entered that area the smell of urine was extremely strong. It made me even more anxious about leaving him there and I actually cried in the car afterward because the entire situation was so stressful (see why keep reading). I paid for several add ons including a Kong extra playtime and the Bedtime Bliss photo. When I called later that week to check on my dog they confirmed my phone number and told me that I would receive the photo later that day because they were very busy. I waited all day and never received any photo. When I picked him up I was told that they do not recommend add ons during the holiday season because "they cannot actually complete them", even though I was charged for them ahead of time. They did refund the cost of SOME of the add ons (which was extra one on one time with my pup and the photo, not the stay) but it would have been important to know that none of the extra care I paid for was actually going to be provided ahead of time. I just felt lied to. The night before I picked him up they called me and said they had run out of the pre-packaged meals I provided even though each bag was clearly labeled with his name and what he looks like, and the day (see photo). This should not have happened unless they over fed him or gave his food to another dog which is extremely negligent. They told me I needed to pay for additional food or choose to have him go unfed. I paid the extra fee. The next morning they suddenly found the bag and removed the charge. When I looked in his bin I noticed that there were actually several unused baggies still there. Finally I was told that my dog had not been going number two yet his blanket had poop on it when I picked him up (see photo). When I asked about it I was told that the rooms are very clean but that did not match what I saw. The blanket I brought also came back covered in white fur even though my dog has black fur and I paid for an individual room. This made me question whether the rooms are truly individual and whether they are properly cleaned as it feels like I couldn't trust anythig that was being told to me so far. Throughout all of this the customer service representatives were always polite. However I honestly could not tell whether the information they were giving me was entirely accurate. I do feel bad because I understand that they probably have a very high number of dogs during the holiday season and maybe the level of care is better when they are not so busy but management should limit the number of dogs staying if they can't provide care properly. So I would absolutely never bring my dog here again and I especially want to warn other pet owners not to drop their dogs off here during holiday periods. Overall I feel that I was not given accurate information at any point and I am heartbroken thinking about the stress my dog went through. This experience was incredibly upsetting and I cannot recommend this location. read more

I have been a loyal PetSmart customer for years and have consistently shopped at this location, which is why this experience was so incredibly disappointing. Our dog had already been accepted into doggy daycare here multiple times and had never had a single issue. She is the sweetest, most peaceful, loving dog with both dogs and humans and has never shown even the slightest sign of aggression. She had already proven she could attend daycare safely and happily. Completely out of the blue, we were suddenly informed by an employee that she could no longer attend because she "looks like a staffie." This was extremely confusing given that she had already been approved and had attended daycare here several times without any problems. What made the situation even worse was that we were out of town when this happened. Leaving town and trusting someone else to care for your dog is stressful enough as it is. Getting a call while away telling us that our dog suddenly could no longer stay at daycare because of how she "looks" was incredibly stressful and upsetting. I understand that PetSmart has policies regarding certain breeds or dogs that appear to be certain breeds. However, policies should be applied consistently and with basic fairness. If this rule truly applied to our dog, it should have been addressed from the beginning rather than allowing her to attend multiple times and then abruptly excluding her based purely on one employee's judgment. To make matters even more frustrating, we have DNA results confirming that our dog is a pug / German shepherd mix, not a staffie or any restricted breed. She is a gentle, affectionate, goofy dog who had already demonstrated that she could participate in daycare without any issue. We also were told by that employee that she acknowledged that she was clearly a very sweet dog and apologized for the situation, Hearing that even management recognized she was not a problem only made the situation feel more unreasonable. Instead of being treated like a dog who had already been welcomed there before, she was suddenly treated like a liability based purely on appearance. That is incredibly disappointing from a place that claims to provide a safe and caring environment for pets. As someone who has supported this PetSmart location for years, I expected a far higher level of consistency and professionalism. If you are looking for a place where your dog will be evaluated fairly and treated with genuine care, I would strongly recommend considering other daycare options . read more

Scheduled my dog for grooming. I've been going to the mission valley location for 2 years but recently moved so decided to try this location out. I get there and Alex mentions his schedule is overbooked and he said he doesn't think he'll have time to fit my dog in. I asked why they didn't call as this is my only day off. He said they have to check the dog's coat first and that my dog was "too matted and seemed timid" which has never been a problem at any other location. He offered a discount to come back another day, but I won't be back to a place that isn't respectful of my time and advanced scheduling. Would rather drive further. Heading NB 5 towards home and stopped to gather some gifts for our son who has 2 cats. Filled a basket with costumes, treats, food, toys and the wife said she wanted to use the restroom before hitting the road. Walked to the back of the store and shocked to see premade signs which CLOSED both male and female restrooms for customers. Very, very unprofessional and discourteous. You WONT get our business if this is the way you do business. Dropped everything and walked out. Don't worry about apologizing, we won't ever be back. The other Pet company associates hate getting us crickets and told us management says sell customers 40 at a time whether they need it or not. We've boarded our kitties here for years. Petsmart pet hotel in La Jolla has been our go to spot when we go on vacation. That changes starting immediately. We had scheduled a reservation for our two kitties over thanksgiving months in advance. We also use their sister company Banfield for vet services with the optimum wellness plan. Our most recent wellness visit was in September. Imagine our surprise when they refused to take one of our cats since his rabies vaccine expires during his stay. There wasn't a prior heads up and we thought we were covered at our most recent Banfield visit. Banfield is inside PetSmart so we asked if we could get the rabies vax while we're here. Yes, but it wouldn't do any good since they have a 48 hour hold policy. We couldn't check him in until two days later. Not an awesome start to our vacation which starts the following day. Leader Jenn Vandenberg jumped in to provide options after another staff member told us "sorry" without offering to help. Jenn gave us two local hotels which didn't have a strict vax policy and might be able to accommodate us. We lucked out and grabbed an opening. The new place will prove the rabies shot too. Jenn has always been great but she can't carry the pet hotel on her own. She hustles while other staff put in minimum effort. It's time for a new pet hotel. read more

Thank you for taking care of my old dog, Commander Shepard. She was chewing and scratching a lot. I figured it was allergies or she was a bit dirty, but the groomer instantly noticed the FLEAS!! I thought her meds were up to date, but I must have missed the last dose. I dropped her off for a grooming and flea treatment, they tell me "2 hours", went home and got back to working from home. 45 minutes later, they call, she is done! I head back, pick her up and get her home to relax for the rest of the day. She is my sweet angel that does nothing wrong. She doesn't deserve fleas, they just happen due to visiting dog parks and socializing with every dog she meets. It's important to take care of her. The groomers did a great job! Thank you. read more

I've taken my dog for walk in grooming her to get her nailed trimmed/grinded. Both times I've been I was able to walk in right away and my dog was ready within a few minutes. They've done a great job with grinding her nails. The service is affordable and the location is convenient. Sometimes my dog gets covered in loose dog hair after her service from the other dogs that are getting groomed so I have to brush her off. read more

Brought my Spanish water dog in for a wash and brush and dematting appointment. He is a special breed where cording and almost pelting is how their hair is supposed to grow. The called me 20 minutes later asking me to pick him up. After 15 min of lecturing from their team I realized that they did not do their research on the breed. You are not supposed to brush this type of hair daily. They were not knowledgeable and kept calling him a doodle, which he is not. Without my approval they spot shaved parts of my pups beautiful cords without my approval. We just booked a wash and dematting appointment not a shave. read more

This review is for the retail store only. I see that several people have left negative reviews about the daycare or grooming, etc. I haven't used these services, so I won't be reviewing them. From a retail perspective, this store is one of the best in San Diego. It is definitely the best PetSmart. If you are a fan of PetSmart, it is worth driving a little bit to visit this location. It is one of the biggest in the chain and I've been told there are only 7 stores that share this floorplan. The assortments are expanded, so if you are looking for a hard to find product, check here. I know that when I am looking for supplies, if it is not at this PetSmart, then they just don't carry it in Brick and Mortar. Usually when I go in, there are PetSmart team members that greet me and help me find whatever I am looking for. I typically find that there is one cashier and 2-3 associates working the floor. This location doesn't seem to be too busy - maybe that is because of how spread out the floor plan is? If they were busy, then I think the staffing would be considered minimal. The location is on the back side of the shopping plaza, so it is easy to miss. However, if you persevere, then you will be in for a treat! Or maybe your pet will be in for a treat! Went to board my dog after scheduling an appointment on a time-sensitive basis. Was confidently told by a lady at the desk that I could not board my dog because a small portion of my vaccination records were hand-written from the Medical Director/Veterinarian from Baja Paws Rescue, a California-licensed dog rescue where I found my puppy. To clarify, the 3 main vaccinations, Rabies, DAPP, and Bortadella, were not hand-written and from the same Medical Director/Vet along with the San Diego Humane Society. Here is a list of organizations that accept my vaccination documents: Vetco Veterinarian Humane Society of San Diego San Diego Animal Services Dog Licensing Department Furry Friends Dog Boarding PetSmart La Jolla Training Dept. PetSmart Aero Drive Training Dept. Here is a list of organizations that do not accept my vaccination documents: PetSmart La Jolla Boarding Facility The remarkable thing is how cursory a look was taken at my documentation to only SO CONFIDENTLY and incorrectly tell me I can't board my dog because my vaccination records are not acceptable because of some unspecified 'state law.' The girl who took her over seemed confident, yet didn't follow a damn thing I asked for. She mentioned her fur is fine, barely any matting, nothing for me to worry about and it'll all be fine. Then she charges me an additional $20 and completely ruins my dogs face after I specifically instructed her on HOW TO trim my dogs head and face. Thanks Petsmart. I have spent thousands of dollars with the La Jolla store and will never step foot in that store again. I booked an appointment for a bath at 1:30pm. I got a call from them at 1pm saying my appointment was for 12:30pm and I needed to schedule for another day. I told them I was sure it was for 1:30 because I set my alarm right after the call, and the call ended. They called right back and said they had a cancellation and I could come in at 1:30, admitting that was the correct time to begin with. My dog has a heart murmur, and I was told that they would have to talk to the groomer to decide whether or not they would do the bath (my dog has been there many times before) due to the murmur. I was upset and they laughed at me. If you want professional service, I would recommend Aspens Dog House across the street. read more

My puppy just graduated from her puppy class here and it was a great experience! The trainer LeeAnn really loved puppies (you can see by how she works with them) and was super patient with our hyperactive puppy. She learned a lot as did us humans. We will be back for intermediate classes. Haven't had any bad experiences with the items they're selling but I swear this PetSmart hires only the most incompetent people. I came in today to pick up an online order, told the cashier the items in my order and showed her my ID so she could see the spelling of my name. After she looked over my ID for a while, she turned to me and said, usually there's a name on the order - what's the name? I told her my name and she went to pick up my items. When she came back, I noticed some items were missing so I reminded her that I also ordered litter. She went to the rack once again, then picked up some litter. As she was walking to the register, I could tell it wasn't my order. I kindly told her, that's not what I ordered. She then asked for my name AGAIN, explaining to me she needed to see what items I ordered. I could see my order on the rack so I tried to help her and told her where the litter is located. I basically did her job for her right from the start and it still took 5X longer than it should have. I don't know if I should laugh or be frustrated but that pretty much sums up most of my experience at the branch here. Now I remember why I hadn't been back there in over a year. This review is regarding the doggie day camp: My dog used to enjoy coming here in the beginning, but the place seems to have gone downhill! There are no activities being offered for the dogs to play and engage although it is advertised on the website. Pups just sit, bored, in a pen, and stare into space waiting for their masters to return. Today I witnessed the attendant in the area with my dog just shrug my dog off as my dog excitedly wanted to leave when she saw me. My dog was jumping on her leg to say" I want to go home now" and she just negatively and arbitrarily shrugged her off as if irritated by my dog. It was disheartening to see a person like this caring for our beloved fur babies. I questioned the manager as to why the woman seemed irate and I got a myriad of excuses for her behavior--- as if they should apply to me and my pet. I was choosing to bring my dog to a warm and welcoming environment and not have to make exceptions to my dog's care because of someone's personal problems or issues. My dog seems traumatized every time I leave her there. I won't return. read more

She asked our puppy's needs from the start, understood breeder personalities and even went to learn our pup's behaviors over the course of weeks then gave advice. I really don't like giving 1 reviews but I've been to this PetSmart on many occasions and it's the same disappointing experience every time. Employees here are so lethargic that it's pathetic. If you don't want to work, go home. I visited this store about a month ago and asked if they carried Letter Genie refills and the cashier looked at me like I was from another planet. I literally had to speak and enunciate each word like I was speaking to a 2-year old. No, they didn't have them. Today, I needed kitty litter. Two bags of scented (no thanks but I don't like floral smelling cat waste) and another bag in the black wrapper. I asked the employee if he worked the area and he said no, but would try to help. I asked about the Dr. Elsey's Ultra Unscented litter in the dark blue bag and he said "Yeah, there's none out here." I'm saying to myself, "Yeah ... I'm kinda aware and that's why I asked you." ... but politely asked if they have any stock in the back. Instead of checking he said, I doubt it. I thought about leaving my cart in the aisle but thought that might be too much like work to them so I went back to retrieve it and roll it back to the front of the store. It's really bad that most of the employees act like they could give two 's about working and helping the customer. Now off to find some kitty litter in a nearby area and maybe someone who thinks customer service skills are important. I mean, he could have checked to see if they had any in stock. I wouldn't have minded waiting. But again, too much like work. PS. I'm not a b¡t€h¥ person, I'm a person too. I'm also someone who used to work in the business and was taught to help the customer so they would repeat their business and refer business to your store. That's how you keep stores open. read more

They sold me some cat food that was more insects (unfortunately very alive and very active) than food. It was horrifying. When I went back to the store, they didn't want to refund or exchange the food since I hadn't brought back the product, which in a panic I got out of my apartment as fast as I could and into the garbage Maybe I'm wrong here, but I don't think I should be expected to transport an insect infested bag of food in my car even if I do just "put it in a garbage bag" as they so helpfully suggested for next time. I've already spent hours killing the hundreds of bugs that were flying around my apartment after opening the bag, I don't need that in my car too. I do understand the reason for requiring product back as a policy. I recognize there are scammers out there. But maybe don't treat me like a criminal for trying to get a refund when you sold me a rancid bag of cat food full of bugs. There are plenty of pet supply stores in San Diego. Your store is disgusting to not help a defenseless animal that is suffering! All she asked for was water!!!!! Where to start... Amazing staff running the Doggy Day Camp. Today was Gracies 1st day attending & the experience so smooth. When I left Gracie there in the AM, the girl at the front desk, Jenn made sure that I had every bit of info needed so I could go about my day with zero worries. I knew Gracie was in great hands. I will be taking her to play 2-3 days a week from now on. The fact that there is an experienced employee inside the play room at ALL times is really comforting. Grace is small so it is nice knowing someone is there to keep things in order, just in case a hound decides to get sideways. Apparently Grace vomited a little bile, which was very likely due to being nervous. But I love that they didn't call me, because that would have only stressed me out. it is obvious there are seasoned employees working within the pet hotel/daycamp. And no, this isn't a paid ad. haha. I recently bought a Guinea pig from a DIFFERENT PetSmart. The whole process took less than 3-4 mins. I walked in at 8:55 and walked out at 8:59. (The associate unfolded a box, put the little Guy in there, I spent 60 seconds filling out a form and wam-bam-thank you ma'am I was at the register.) Well I came here straight after work to get my little sister a hamster for her birthday tomorrow. I arrived at 8:48 and they close at 9. They had enough time to sell me a hamster twice over. Instead they claimed a company wide policy that they "can't" sell animals after 8:30. I looked far and wide On every platform including petsmart website and this policy doesn't exist The girl that "helped" me kept cutting me off and wouldn't let me Talk. Visibly frustrated after only 20 seconds, she ignored me and called manager "Anthony" who was also very curt and stated this nonexistent policy. Instead of arguing either one of them could have just helped me and I would've been out before 9. But Anthony said they weren't capable of selling one In that time. Again this "policy" is not posted anywhere in store or online. They made it up because they are either lazy or incompetent. I'm guessing they're perfectly capeable because neither of them appeared to be half a momo. So that just leaves lazy. God forbid they leave at 9:02 to help a loyal customer and make a little girls birthday. I work 12-16 hours a day and this is the only time I can ever come so I guess I'm never buying anything here, ever. Andrea in the grooming salon is the ONLY groomer I trust with my pup, Kai. I've been taking Kai to Andrea for over two years now (since she was at the PB location) and she does an incredible job giving him the perfect "puppy" cut despite how terrified and growly he is while being groomed. Having a shihtzu/yorkie, we are so used to him having an incredibly dorky haircut but since we've been taking him to Andrea he always looks so handsome, clean cut and cute after a groom! She's even worked with him to get his nails cut AND grinded! She's the first groomer who's ever grinded his nails! Here's a few of the before & afters of Kai after his haircuts with Andrea. We can't thank her enough!! PS - if you get your dog groomed always make sure you tip! It blows my mind when I pick up Kai and others don't tip, dogs are way harder to work with than humans so come on people! :) read more

This review is for Dog boarding!! I've taken our boy Moose here now several times for boarding and he always seems pretty mellow when we pick him up. PROS: This last time he stayed for 6 days and nights. We had him bathed on the last day and I must say he smelled divine!! Definitely worth it to have the staff give your pet a bath. He still smells good today, which is awesome! Moose seems happy when he arrives and the staff seem to enjoy having him there. Several of them commented when I brought him in about him coming and being happy and of course that makes me happy! Employees are overall happy at their jobs and helpful and knowledgeable. CONS: Lines can be dreadfully long sometimes here. I'm patient (because I want my dog) but seems like sometimes they're understaffed. read more

He's a poodle mix and was not matted as I brush him often. When I picked him up he was scalped ridiculously short. He was all worked up and didn't even look or smell like he'd had a bath. You definitely get what you pay for - it's cheap and convenient for UTC but they never cut short enough for what I ask. My most recent experience I was running late (yes my fault) but still showed up 20 min later & requested instead of doing a FULL bath and cut to just bathe her...they told me they couldn't accommodate anything even though they advertise bath walk-ins welcome??? I planned this grooming date so my dog would be out of my house for maintenance so they left me in a terrible position today. I used Petsmart every 3-4 weeks for my large dog and hoped they could accommodate since we use them often but now will be going somewhere else for all her grooming. read more

My husband and I took our Goldendoodle for grooming at Petsmart in La Jolla. In the past, we had tried several providers and was extremely dissatisfied because they practically shaved off our dog's beautiful coat and she'd end up looking like Bambi. We explained this to the groomer, Andrea and she was very receptive. She assured us that she was going to try her best to save most of our pet's coat. After 3 hours, we picked up our dog and was very happy with the results! Our fur baby looked beautiful with her new round and bushy tail! Thank you, Andrea for the exceptional service!
