My experience was similar to Steve Ls. We selected the Petshotel because we had to find a place on short notice and figured that they would be reputable. We found comfort in them having an on-site vet in the event that anything should happen. We dropped our dog off on Thursday evening.
I called late Friday afternoon to check up on her and was informed everything was okay. However, early Saturday morning we were contacted by the Banfield Hospital within the same store about our dog who had diarrhea. My wife and I both downplayed the diarrhea, since we assumed it had been stress induced. The more we minimized it, the more the Banfield representative built it up going from "diarrhea to diarrhea with some blood to mostly blood." They insisted that they wanted to run tests. After giving them the go ahead, Banfield said they'd get back to me as soon as possible and that they were thankful that I would let them run the tests since they were so worried about my dog. I informed them that I would be coming home earlier than I had planned from my vacation and that I wanted Sunday boarding and grooming canceled. They said they'd pass the message on to the Petshotel.
Hours passed and neither my wife nor I were given a return call. I attempted to follow up with them, but got no answer. Frustrated, I called over to the Petshotel to see if they knew anything and was informed that "She was fine and resting in her room." Irritated, I asked about the early pickup and they said that they hadn't been informed, but that they would do their best to have her ready. I was also told that she was prescribed a number of medications and that my veterinary charges totaled $280. They attempted to have me pay for everything over the phone on the spot, which I refused, saying that I would handle it in person.
I arrived around 8AM this morning as discussed previously. They brought her out partially wet, but not as if she had gotten her exit bath. It seems they just washed her legs and rear, but didn't give her the full bath that was included in the stay. I then inquired about her beach towel that I had left as a comfort item. This was apparently in some locker area, not in her kennel. In an attempt to explain why, they claimed that it had been washed; however it appeared that it had been stored the entire time rather than kept with her. I was then handed a bag with two types of antibiotics, doggie anti-diarrheal and a food supplement in it. I asked about each of the medications that were prescribed and no one had any answers about any of it. Banfield was supposed to hand off instructions to the Petshotel staff, however once again there seemed to be a communication breakdown. I was then told that someone would contact me later today and walk through the medications and their usage. After getting home, I had to empty the contents of each bottle to count the remaining pills to see that she was indeed given her medication the night before and am apparently expected to continue medicating my dog without doctor instructions until hopefully someone reaches out to me and explains the why I am giving my dog each of these medications. As if all of this wasn't enough, when I went over my bill, I found that the nightly rate was for the "dog atrium" which is the generic boarding, not the suite that I had in my reservation. I had requested the private suite so that she'd be more comfortable in a quiet, less stress inducing environment--so much for that.
The only reason this review is a two is because of how it was handled from here on out. I recapped the whole scenario with the manager on duty and they waived all of my veterinary expenses including the medicine, saving me roughly $280. I was also able to recover my last day of expenses since we picked her up early and apply their first time customer discount. As a result, my total was $105 rather than the $400ish that I was looking at when I arrived. My dog is happy to be home, but is completely exhausted and has been sleeping at my feet all day. This store has a lot of potential; however communication to the customer and internally between the different lines of businesses is abysmal. I'd be very wary of bringing any dog here without asking extensive and explicit questions in the future read more
