However, the breakfast burrito scene is so competitive these days with innovators like Cofax and Tacos Tu Madre that I can't say Phanny's burrito placed it up to snuff with those mentioned competitors. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Phanny's is cash only, which is something that I really can't understand these days, but even so the service is fast and friendly. I could have used some outdoor seating options, but in all I didn't have anything to complain about. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $5.70 got me a decent sized two meat (sausage and bacon) breakfast burrito at Phanny's, and while I could have used a bit more to be full, this was great value all things considered. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? My breakfast burrito at Phanny's had all the essentials, with good meats, eggs, cheese, crispy tater tot potatoes, and some fresh salsa wrapped in a tortilla. I was getting my car serviced down the street from this restaurant so I decided to give it a try. Upon arriving I noticed a small line which made me excited to try something from this place. You order in the front and pick up your food in the back which is nice and an easy way to avoid large crowds. We ordered the bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on white bread which was simple but very tasty. We also ordered the soy chorizo burrito and it was delicious and didn't leave me feeling greasy after eating it which was nice. Came here years ago n sorry I was not impressed at all with the burritos we ordered, so i wanted to give it another try a couple months ago. Same ol same burrito..... mediocre is how I describe it with nothing special. I recently stayed with a non-coffee drinking friend in Redondo Beach and using Yelp, discovered Phanny's was just a short walk. They had several unusual flavors, including lavender, root beer horchata, so I decided to try a new one each day. The lattes were good, but honestly I couldn't taste the difference between flavors. This was not a deal breaker though, and I enjoyed the low key atmosphere and friendly counter service. I was going to try a breakfast burrito on my last day, which is what they are known for, but it was the one day of the week they were closed. Went to Phanny's for breakfast on Friday morning. I was very disappointed with my Carne Asada Burrito, but the concept was cool and other menu options looked better. Quality: As one of the most raved about places in the area I expected much more. I truly felt cheated by the Carne Asada Burrito I ordered, it was essentially chewy over-seasoned ground beef inside. Seeing both a sausage and a soy chorizo burrito, both of those meat-ish options looked much better and at least like the item requested. It is a shame they call it carne asada, because I think the rest of the elements inside came out good. Quantity: It is a good sized burrito, which will leave you satisfied. Value: $10 for a Carne Asada Burrito. Ambiance: Phanny's is a hole in the wall breakfast and coffee spot in Redondo Beach. It is even more so now because they closed off the inside area due to COVID. Instead of waiting at the counter they have you order at one window then wait near another window to pick up. Normally there is a little bit of space, but most of the indoor area is dominated by the kitchen. No seats inside or outside, which seems like a missed opportunity, but it is not far to beach where plenty of benches and seats can be found. Crowd: A constant line out front on Friday morning. I imagine it gets worse on the weekends, but it was no more than a 20minute wait for us. Service: They kept the line moving relatively fast. I was upset that they had a sign saying no avocado and it was very clear from waiting by the window that they both had the item and were allowing customers to order it. I have driven by this place thousands of times (seriously) and finally got around to trying it for breakfast. Its simple, its quick, its good, its inexpensive, its friendly, its an easy walk to the beach for a nice walk after breakfast. What more can you want? They offer 10 or so burritos, 2 vegetarian, both very enjoyable. Bonus points for the Soy Chorizo option. I would add jalapeno's next time, my bad. A SOUTH BAY STAPLE!! :-) The parking lot is small but has never been full (I've been to Phanny's at least 6 times now at various times) The burritos are a great size--very filling & I usually save half for later. Finally had the chance to try their breakfast burritos and I think it's def one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. I got the sausage burrito with avocado and jalapeños on the side and it was bomb.com. I thought the jalapenos would be like the ones you eat with nachos but they were just reg chopped up jalapeños. Still good though! Coffee is great as always. They've added a few things since I left my last review. The americano hit the spot. Parking may be difficult since there's less than ~15 spots to park in their lot but there's street parking available. It seems like business has been doing well bc there were a few more employees that I've never seen before. My bf and I used to come here often but since we moved, we stopped visiting since it was out of the way for us. This is the spot. Just moved to the area with a few friends and we found this place right away. I've had some people come visit me and I've taken them ALL to Phannys. Every single person I have taken has loved it and raved about the burritos and the coffee. They have a huge selection of breakfast burritos- my favorite is the carne asada, add avocado, and sometimes substitute for egg whites. Yum I'm hungry just thinking about it. They also have burgers and other options that I have not tried because I'm stuck on their delicious burritos. I can't imagine getting anything else but I see other people very satisfied with their orders too, so it must all be as good! The couple who owns it is very friendly and remember who I am every time! Angie, the wife, has a very caring smile and stops to say hello when you walk in. They give very good service and bring your food to you pretty quickly in the mornings, especially on week days. It gets a little crazy on the weekend but that's just because it's where everyone wants to be. TRUST ME it's worth the wait! Some consider me to be a coffee snob so if you are looking for good coffee listen up. (Mainly if you don't think Starbucks when you hear good coffee but this place is good, and very affordable, for you Starbucks drinkers too.) Their batch brew is amazing! And only $2.50 for a big ol 16oz cup! They have coffee from Heart coffee roasters (Seattle), stump town, Sweet Bloom and other specialty coffee roasters. The baristas are very friendly and care a lot about the quality of their coffee! I usually get the soy chorizo ($7.45) and add avocado ($1.25) and jalapeño ($0.35). You even have the option to sub egg whites for an additional $2.00. The soyrizo tastes so real, it's kinda crazy!! I was pretty spooked the first time I had it...is this real meat?? I'm usually not a huge fan of meat substitutes, but this...WOW. There are a variety of other protein/burrito choices as well (veggie, egg, bacon, ham, sausage, turkey, multiple meat combos). There are other food items on the menu, but they're mainly known for the burritos. I've had both the hot and cold versions of their matcha latte, and they were absolutely amazing! They use real tea leaves and powders for quality you can taste. Tried the cold brew, and that was pretty good too. The coffee and tea menu is definitely up to par with the food menu! Sometimes, my brother brings in his own low carb tortillas, and they're more than happy to make the burrito for him using those! Love the owners!! They're so friendly and always greet us with a smile :) There's a small parking lot outside that fills up easily, but it isn't usually too tough to find parking. CASH ONLY!! I remember seeing an ATM inside. The beach is only 2 blocks away, so if you can't find a seat inside, make the short walk! A burrito and a cup of Stumptown cold brew in hand, the feeling of the grainy, wet Redondo Beach sand between your toes, the salty sea breeze, the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore, SoCal sunshine shining down on you--honestly, what more could you want? I used to think I'd be chasing the ideal breakfast burrito as long as I would be chasing the ideal croissant or eggs Benedict. Until today. The bacon breakfast burrito here is flat out amazing. Taste the bacon? Check. Even and consistent flavor throughout? Check. No sogginess? Check. Not too much tortilla? Check. This thing hit pretty much all of the metrics spot on. It might not have a ton of variety in ingredients with hash browns, cheese, meat, salsa, and eggs but I think the simplicity is what makes it shine over so many others. It's basically saying, "I am beautiful with a strong foundation. I don't need fancy ingredients to make me shine". I mean, if you want to add Cholula salsa to it, be my guest, but it's such a good burrito it's almost a shame to add since it'll just dilute the harmony of its simplicity. The coffee here also makes me giddy with joy. Now, normally when I see a sign outside claiming "good coffee!", there's a lot of justified skepticism that come up (I mean, if you have good coffee, do you really need to proclaim that out loud?), but the coffee here does really live up to it. They have Stumptown coffee but also carry other roasters like Madcap that make amazing coffee (Oktoberfest blend is on point). My only complaint is that I wish I had found this place sooner. Love coming here for their breakfast burritos (served all day)! Very reasonably priced ($6.75) for a bacon, ham or sausage breakfast burrito. Burrito includes salsa in it. We also got the cappuccino and flat white coffee. Very good! They offer fresh squeezed juice if juice is your morning drink. Drinks range $3.75-4.50. Cash only (ATM on site) and parking is in the back. It's a block from the beach, you can buy your breakfast here and enjoy it on the beach, which is what we did. Such a great place for breakfast.
