At night, the staff are INCREDIBLY rude. One of the staff members said I couldn't sit on one of the stools and threatened to kick me out for sitting down on it. Phebe's is usually insanely packed on weekends and filled with young people. Very sports bar, college feel I got from it the few times I have been. I would never drink there late due to the obnoxious black-out drunk college kids, however the food at Phebe's is notable. Really, really awful. The bar staff was unbelievably rude. The bartender refused to give my credit card back, telling me that there was a 20 dollar minimum. He wouldn't accept cash, and wouldn't take the drink back. My friend bought the same drink on her credit card at the exact same time with a different bar tender and was not asked to pay any minimum. I'm sure that the management think that they can get away with anything because the place was packed with really young college kids from out of town. This place is one big frat party. The guy in front of us in the line even called the bouncer a racial slur to his face. The bouncer didn't bat an eye. I'm sure he gets this kind of abuse every night from this entitled, obnoxious crowd. I doubt that management does anything to stop it. The music, the drinks, and the crowd were really bad. If I could give zero stars I would... I went out for a typical night of drinking/hanging out with some friends, we're all in the 21-23 y/o range. Not one of us underage. The bouncers were absolutely terrible, like so horrible. I've encountered bouncers that don't let people in that are still respectful when telling people they can't come in. Not only were the bouncers (an older foreign man & younger black man) extremely aggressive and bad mannered but also were threatening us for asking why a friend of mine (who is of age) wasn't allowed in. Overall it was a horrible experience, there's a certain way a business should be run and this was not the way to go. I've been the Phebe's before where this nonsense didn't happen, and it still wasn't a great time. Music sucks, food is barely edible, drinks overpriced w/ barely any alcohol and the treatment by the staff just ruins the night all together. Would NOT recommend if you are trying to have a good time with no trouble. Hopefully management realizes the major flaws in their staff and takes action to prevent their future customers from being harassed. read more

i've only ever been here at night when it's mostly a bar + lounge, but it's a fun place to be. great drink specials during the day, and reasonably priced drinks. this is definitely a place to go with a group and also meet new people or friends of friends. HOWEVER as numerous yelpers have pointed out, phebe's staff isn't exactly in tune with modernity (more like they were shipped out of 1970s) - heard racial slurs in the line, and it was honestly disgusting. at the end of the day, though, remember these people are standing in line taking IDs and making drinks for us. TIPS - the crowd is essentially a college frat party, either they're in college or right out of college - drinks are not particularly strong - i had a gin and tonic and remember it tasting mostly like tonic - i would recommend you get drinks before and use phebe's as more of a socializing space - there's a main area where people are standing and a space in the back with more tables - definitely hang out in the standing area, as that's where most people are and its a more fun environment in which you can dance around or talk to people - a lot of fun clubs in the bowery area within walking distance with roughly the same demographic, but slightly older (not the most trendy/fun/young places, but still fun nonetheless) read more

Great happy hour! Really great. All drinks are half price until 8pm, as well as all appetizers--and half of reasonable prices too, not super inflated ones. They have a pretty extensive beer list (I enjoyed my Blue Moon, for example) and all the standard pub grub that you know and love. Yay (or something) for filling up on beer and pub appetizers on January 2nd--so much for New Year's resolutions! Our waitress was attentive and patient, and she even brought over two free pints of beer that had been ordered accidentally. Awesome. I also appreciated that all the spoils of happy hour were available not just at the bar, but at the tables as well, and we had a nice big one nestled in a back corner that felt cozy and semi-private. Phebe's is a little far from the subway (especially on the freezing cold night that I was there), but also delightfully far enough away from my office and closer to my apartment which I love. It may sound minor, but this distance thing is a key factor for me in deciding how good a happy hour deal is--if i can get a fair distance away from midtown grossness and still have enough time to take advantage of happy hour, I'm a very happy girl. phoebe's is in a good location in the east villlage, but comes up short. Very short in some areas. Over the course of the night, the bartenders watered down the drinks (this was a common complaint), and they built a line out front even though the place had a lot of room inside. Moreover, the place thought it was something that it wasn't, i.e., it is just a bar, not an expensive lounge-- this was seen most egregiously in the aggressive security staff who made the whole experience not worth it (we went with 4 guys, part of a bachelor party). They were not receptive to the fact that we had a party set up, kept a lot of us outside, and in the end, the bouncers were so annoyed with our asking why we couldn't get our friends in that they became belligerent and physically pushed us out. Too bad, place has potential, but don't recommend it, especially for groups. read more

This place is one of those immediately charming establishments, with nice candle-lit tables that populate the the very spacious and well-decorated interior. To be entirely frank, I had a very pleasant first experience up until about 11pm. Initially, a friend and I arrived at ~9:30pm, and decided to get a table as we were expecting another friend to join us some time later. The bar was already fairly crowded, so a table seemed to make the most sense. Our hostess informed us that we would be required to buy something off of the food menu if we were to sit at a table. No big deal. Drinking and good conversation with friends often works up an appetite, so why the fuck not order some $8 wings? Wasn't really that hungry, but they were good wings and we wanted a spot at a table. Well, fast-forward to about 11pm, and the place starts to really liven up. The music selection is good, the floor becomes a little more crowded, and it seems fun. We had seating near the left interior wall of the building as you walk in, next to a window. The bar gets more crowded by the minute, and looks more like an undergraduate bar with every admitted patron. But like I give a fuck, I have a table. A table that I paid to sit at by ordering wings I didn't really want. I didn't need to interact with/or be near the mass of tangible sexual frustrations amassing in the center of the bar, nor did I need to navigate around the spastic, trashy dancing of carnally desperate characters. Why? BECAUSE I HAD A FUCKING TABLE! But as the wad of intoxicated patrons grew, the waitstaff began to move tables and chairs out of the way. It made sense. All of the unoccupied seats should be moved so that they can maximize space to accommodate thirsty little shits. I get that; it's business. And it seemed slightly inconvenient for my friend and I to be seated right in the path of the waitstaff, but what-the-shit-ever it's where they seated us, and it's where we paid to be. Only at 11:30, when about 3 occupied tables remained, and the amount of shitshow in the center of the bar had reached critical mass, did it become too inconvenient for the waitstaff to move around the table that they seated us at. My friend and I were told that we had to leave from our seating because the table had to be moved, while other tables closer to the nooks near the front of the establishment remained occupied. I don't know if I'll really ever stop asking myself "what the actual fuck is this shit about?". Because i have never been told to leave my waitstaff-approved seating at any time in any establishment in the history of anything. What's worse is that we were offered no other alternatives. No other more convenient seating arrangements were even available. It's like, "tough shit, paying customers who we seated here specifically. We need to make room for more paying customers to pump some liquid confidence down their booze chutes and be social young adults". That's cool I guess. It's like one of those awful pranks where the super douche nozzle does injurious things to people, and gets defensive when his victims complain about being physically harmed and in immense pain, and responds with "it's a prank bro, chill it's just a prank." while pointing frantically at the camera. Except in the case of Phebe's, there is no hidden camera and the waitstaff are actually just being massive pube goobers. NYC has so many more places to eat at and not be treated like shit. I'll keep and eye out for them instead, and steer clear of this place. read more

hmmm... atmosphere is mediocre. they have good wings. it's good for weeknights, but this is definitely an NYU grad joint, but not the cool tisch people... they're mostly from the stern/finance group, mixed with the B & T douchebag crowd on fridays and saturdays. i also had my clutch stolen here that contained a wallet and a brand new ipod i got as a gift. every time i walk past this place, there's always a huge line, yet the bouncers always stop to ask me if i'd like to go inside and skip the line. there's not enough ass-kissing in the world from this place to get me to go back in there unless it's to set it on fire. read more

Phebes is my favorite happy hour place! It may not have the best service but the food is pretty good for the happy hour price! I know everyone comes here for wings but since I am a vegetarian/pescatarian, what I usually do is I meet up with friends at phebes (either monday or wednesdays) at around 7:30pm because before 8pm all their appetizers and drinks are half price! I love their Nachos! Definitely get their nachos! Their fried calamari is pretty good too. Their spinach dip and mozzarella sticks are just average though. Definitely stick with the nachos. Its a really big dish to share for a really good price. Then as soon as it hits 8:00pm we order a pitcher of beer and I let my friends order all the wings to their hearts desire. And they all seem to love it. Overall this is a pretty good place to have a nice drink with friends and have some bar food without having to spend a lot of money. The only thing that is weird is that you can't take the rest of your leftover wings home which makes me question what they do with the left overs. read more

Met up with some friends here and ordered a couple of drinks. I like the fruity frou-frou drinks and the bartender certainly made them just right, which really surprised me since a lot of places are watered down. We were originally looking to sit down and eat but they didn't have any tables available so we just hung out at the bar for a couple of hours and ordered food there. Just got simple appetizers like buffalo wings and tater tots. Can't go wrong there. It started to get really packed around 10pm and the music got better around then too. what makes phebe's different from your typical bar? the variety of dining areas. some people like to hang out by the bar, or maybe you like it al fresco by the windows, or perhaps you prefer open dining style in the back or maybe you're like me and you like high tables that somehow make you feel "safe" from the bumping and spills on a crowded night. at phebe's you have your pick of all these options. not to mention the half priced apps during happy hour. you just can't beat the specials and the quality of the bar food. now if only i didn't have to get on a train to go to phebe's. i guess my wallet is better off this way. read more

Was near the bar waiting to order a water when a man over a foot taller than me got in my space and reached his arm right between my friend and me. I gave my friend a look and he told me to "stop being so dramatic". He and his friends proceeded to get up in my face shouting "fake news" and shouting that I was being dramatic. I looked for a bouncer but could not find anyone, and there were no employees around to help me. I felt intimidated and scared, and instead of him getting kicked out, I left. To provide some color to the intensity of my hatred of this place; one of my better friends from out of town was having a birthday party here, and I almost didn't attend because he had picked Phoebe's. Phoebe's has one thing going for it, size, it is a large bar. Other than that this placed is adorned only sightly better than a dive. I love dive bars but if they don't have prices that correspond to their scant decor, the charm is lost. I have a strong feeling that much of the crowd of this bar is comprised of large flocks of males that were turned away from Bowery Bar, or other bars in this area. As an intern, this was definitely the place to be and where all the other interns congregated. Most of the time there's a line but it goes pretty quickly since most people go back and forth from B Bar across the street. The bouncers are nice if you're nice to them and are pretty chatty. They're very strict about people smoking in line or near the entrance which I appreciate. Once you get in, it's absolutely packed and hard to navigate. You have to push your way towards the bar and the bar itself is super sticky from all the drinks sloshing around. There's a bar in the back room which is less crowded since I think fewer people know about it so go there if you're ordering a drink. The music is top 40. Even though it's not my favorite bar in NYC by far, I keep on coming back because there are just so many young people who end up there. If there's enough space, people start dancing but again, rarely is there enough room. read more

There's two bars with bathrooms downstairs. The times I've gone here I've been well on my way to having a good time so it was purely the atmosphere that got me to love this place. It'll be packed inside but there's almost never a wait. It's great to meet people here and if you happen to start or finish your night here, it will most definitely be a big night. read more

Fratty, just graduated college crowd - great place if you like that sort of thing. My friends and I always go here sometime after midnight on a Friday/Saturday night. After 2 AM, things get pretty interesting (mating season to the max!) and crowded. Very commercial music with the occasional Sum 41 song thrown in here and there.
