I was in the area and this place was recommended. I came here open minded, and all I know was I had my eyes on the pretzel. I tried my luck at pull tabs to no avail - bummer. Onto the food, we tried mushrooms, cheese curds, and the coveted pretzel. The mushrooms were good, but I've had better. They needed some seasoning or salt for sure; however, the horseradish sauce served with it was bomb. The curds lived up to WI's reputation and their ranch is delicious. The pretzel itself was good and salty just how I like it but that kitchen staff send out broth water as cheese and some nasty mayo and called it mustard. Nope! Skip those awful sauces. Sneak in your own cheese. It's worth mentioning our server's crotchety lackluster service. We weren't given a greeting or even a smile the entire time. Could have been she's having a bad day, but was an awful experience. I would go back if someone wanted to, but I'd wait longer to get a different server. read more

Didn't think much of it before I went but this is our new go to dive bar...huge on the inside, has eclectic flavors and executed well. I don't eat tacos but theirs is huge and amazing. We have been here many times, usually when my husband has a hankering for Friday fish fry. Atmosphere is loud but friendly--a hometown vibe. I'm a vegetarian so there isn't a lot on the menu for me to choose from, but I love the creamy tomato soup (wish they had it available every time!) Given the limited menu for vegetarians, I usually just make a meal out of the onion rings and ranch dip. Hands-down THE best onion rings anywhere. If you go there and expect to have leftovers, bring your own to-go container. Those styrofoam containers will be the death of us all. If you're ordering take-out, it's a little harder to get away from the styrofoam. (I seriously can't believe styrofoam is even still available for businesses like this to purchase!) Onion rings of this caliber should be packaged with pride in something healthier than styrofoam. :) read more

I've been to Philander's a handful of times the last few years. This past Saturday my bestie and I were in the area and needed some grub. We indulged in a few different appetizers because we just couldn't decide what sounded the best besides three different ones. Let's just say our eyes were much bigger than our appetites after all. We had the mushrooms, pretzel, and cheese curds. Mushrooms were very good. The horseradish sauce served with it was excellent.... Compliments it well. Cheese curds.., can't really go wrong. The pretzel itself was soft and tasty. The cheese sauce and mustard served with it was absolutely AWFUL! The cheese was so runny like soup broth and the mustard tasted like a mayo-ish..... definitely did not taste like a mustard. I'd pass on the dipping sauces with the pretzel. The restaurant is pretty hidden. Next to a motel and gas station. Inside is decorated country like... Up north vibe. They have pull tabs in the machine and a few slot machines. Nice size bar area. Good amount of seating indoors and outdoors. Lots of packer pride. Now for the service-- terrible. By far the worst service I've ever received here and I'm disappointed because it was my bestie's first time here. Next time, I'll have one of the burgers and may try the shrimp appetizer. Went in last night after smelling their food every night from our hotel room next door and they did not disappoint. There were 6 and 1/2 of us and we each thought the food was great including my 1 year old granddaughter who loved the chicken strips (and ketchup lol). I don't get the haters of the cheese sauce... Yes it's thin but very tasty! And the pretzel & cheese curds were the best I've had. Our waitress took great care of us and was super friendly. Will definitely be back to try more things. read more

Omg? This place literally blew my mind. It sure didn't look like much, and it's tucked away on a hill next to a motel in little Prescott. But damn, it was so good. Cheese curds, mouth watering. Pretzel and cheese, just let me die and go to heaven now. And their rueben sandwich may be the best I've ever had...and I'm a rueben critic. So good. And so many options for beers on tap. We had dinner at Philander's last night and it was very good. We both had the 2 piece Codfish dinners with boiled red potatoes. I had the fish chowder and my wife had a dinner salad, both very good. Out server was Nancy and she did a wonderful job of taking care of us. A very large crowd so it was a bit on the loud side. But when you have good food and service you should mind putting up with a little noise. You can bet we will be back there very soon. read more

First time I was there I had a cup of their homemade soup - Garlic Mushroom. It was the best tasting soup I've ever had, wish I'd gotten a bowl instead of cup and wish I'd taken some home. On an exploration drive from St Paul to Afton State Park. Happened across Philander's, tucked away behind a local motel. There is a homey local meeting place atmosphere here. We asked to sit on the covered deck, and had great California and Bacon burger. Both of us requested some slight variations to the description on the menu which were agreed to by our accommodating waitress. The onion rings , served on my burger, had a light crispy batter and i would have loved a small basket of them to eat by themselves! All around excellent experience! read more

This place was awesome. We made a deal to try something new every week out in Prescott and this weeks choice was Philanders. Waitress was attentive and dealt with my indecisiveness without skipping a beat. But boy was I surprised when the bill came and it was only $31. This fed myself, my husband and two children. Can't beat that! And, the food was amazing!! Kids had kids meals, the fries are perfect thin and crispy. They had chocolate milk and fruit too! If for no other reason - this place gets my five star rating for the extreme customer service - they went above and beyond any place I have ever been to and they came up with seating for 12 people without a reservation and even after going through a lot to accommodate us - they continued to serve us with style and class! As for the décor - for me - I LOVED it - wouldn't mind having some of it. As for the food - I loved everything I had. As for the drinks - yep - loved them too! Absolutely delicious!! One of, if not the best burgers in the area. Very friendly atmosphere. The bartender was great. She was very attentive and personable. We spoke a little with one of the managers. She was friendly and engaging. Three of us split a tater tot appetizer. It was great. The size of the dish for the price was perfect. The bacon cheeseburger I had was fantastic. The bun was fresh, pickles were crisp, bacon was cooked well, onion straws flakey(not soggy) and the burger was cooked to perfection. We live a few blocks from Philander's, and having such easy access to a fun bar and grill is dangerously GREAT. Their food is normally good, I love their Mac and cheese. Only downside is sometimes a waitress isn't super friendly, but overall their staff is fantastic and the food/drinks keeps us coming back for more. :) read more

I love good food and fun atmosphere, this place has neither. Is it a restaurant or is it a sports bar? Philanders fails at both. Dated interior with tv's scattered around a massive bar. Don't bring the kids. The adult only conversation style made my ears burn and my date walk out. Then there's the food. Burgers and steaks way over priced, under seasoned cooked by a part time cook who is in high school. Signature ribs? They sure don't smoke em here. Tough, chewy burnt outside, cold inside. 20 bucks shot to hell. Oh, did I mention understaffed so the grumpy bartender is also your host, waitress, buss boy and even chef on slow days. Why a place like this has the most unfriendly staff in 5 counties is beyond me. Made me feel like they were doing me a favor by taking my order. Prescott is a typical Wisconsin border town. The two block long main street contains a bar on every corner and almost every other building in-between. There are days when you swear there are more people drinking in the bars than the total population of town residents. But Philander's is different. It is not on Hwy 35 down river, but is up the hill along the St. Croix. It is high above the street and is easy to miss. But once you pull off the road and into the parking lot it is a very large place that could easily hold two or three of the other town bars with room left over. It is a Packers bar, so there are oversized Green Bay tchotchkes. But it is more like Lambeau Field meets Cabela's--the mezzanine contains a display of dead stuffed animals. But unlike Cabela's these are not native wildlife but African zoo animals, harvested from a "safari" (or maybe a safari park in Texas). But once you sit down at a booth or table Philander's is actually a pleasant place and one of the few places in Prescott you would actually consider bringing a family. On Sunday nights they have a burger special where a Half-Pound Burger is actually much cheaper than a third pound. It was a good Burger; I would say slightly above average for a WI bar. (There are places in the Twin Cities or Rochester that would put it to shame--but this is Prescott). However there was an extensive appetizer list and many other items on the menu. We also had a Crispy Shrimp Wrap and it was great. The Fries and Potato Chips were out of the package and nothing special. But the fries were hot and fresh at least. We will go back. We hope to explore the menu more and find great items like the Shrimp Wrap! Well worth the stop and a great place if you are hungry, not on a motorcycle and only looking to drink, or have a family along. read more

We tried this bar & grille the first time, simply because it was literally just outside out hotel room door. (River Heights Motel). I didn't expect much, but it was a frustrating flight in, a horrible drive from Minneapolis, and we were tired and hungry. And as it was late, Kitchen Table was closed for the night. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it's a bar and grille in every sense. Fine dining, it's not. Quiet, it's not. But for the prices, the food is well worth it. Service is good, and the food is surprisingly good for 'bar food'. Their selection of burgers is varied, and they're all quite good. It's a family dining room, too, so having kids along is no problem. It seems to be always busy, too, which is always a good sign. Good food, good prices, good service. No complaints at all. Even when the rest of our party was an hour late, and we had to "loiter" for that time, the servers didn't mind and took great care of us. We continue to go there each year we travel to Prescott, WI. read more
