Then silence...haha but, but I love lumpia, adobo, and...and... We bought 6 of each today and I must say that the chicken skewers are large and in charge. The pieces of meat are cube-like and burst with juicy flavor. I had requested a half tray of lumpia for pick-up today originally at 2:30pm. I called yesterday to make the change to 5pm. They confirmed the time change. Arrived at 5:22 only for this lady to tell me my pick-up was at 2:30p but had no tray waiting for me. Who did I speak with then? Hard to give this place more than 3 stars unfortunately. I love Fil-Am food and if you're craving it in east bay it's a little harder to find good options. This place just barely meets the mark on that. The market side is good and has plenty of options at a normal cost but the hot food is what I was interested in and it doesn't quite meet my expectations for this type of food. They have a lot of options but the food is often cold even upon it being served to you. I've been here a handful of times mainly because of my love for this type of food but if there was a better option I probably wouldn't come here for the hot food. I was really happy when I learned that Island Pacific was opening up a store in Hayward. This location is much closer to our house than the one in Union City. I love that PhilHouse is in the house serving grilled meats and fish, and other Filipino dishes, but the inefficiency and indifference of the staff can be trying at times, especially when there is a long line. There have been times when I've had to wait for several minutes to be helped when I am the only person in line. The workers just ignore you and do their own thing until they finally decide to help you. I wish they would have more respect for people's time. Also the line often backs up because they only have 1 cashier. Considering how busy they are, they really need to have more than 1 cashier. The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is the food. I often get Grilled Fish here. I also like their Dinuguan and Chicken Adobo. I tend to buy food here on Saturday or Sunday mornings around 9-10 am as the food is fresher, especially the Grilled Fish. I bought grilled fish once around 5 pm and it was pretty dried out. They do have a small area where you can sit down and eat your food after purchasing it. It's also convenient that I can shop for groceries afterwards. I do hope they would be more efficient and provide friendlier and faster service. I used to get bbq sticks (pork and chicken) elsewhere until I found this place. You pay a bit more for them but also get twice as much meat and flavor compared to other places. I have also tried a couple other dishes. The Bicol Express has a little bit of bite which is how I like it, but could do with a little less fat from the pork. I also tried the dinuguan which could use a little more vinegar and spice. Good selection and I've never had any issues with their service. The smell of grilled meats from this place is always enticing but the super long lines I usually see coupled with having absolutely no idea what more than half the dishes are have kept me from actually ordering but one afternoon about 3pm the line was super short so I took the chance. Not being hungry, I just ordered one pork skewer. The ones in the main serving tray looked pretty charred but I was happy when the server asked if I wanted one from another tray (that looked much less charred/burnt) and she wrapped it up for me. I also wanted lumpia, so I told the lady I wanted 3 pieces of lumpia (as mentioned, I wasn't so hungry). An interesting exchange followed. Me: "I'd also like 3 pieces of lumpia." Just recently tried their pork sisig and I liked it better than he pork and tofu dish, must eat with a lot of vinegar!!! Do NOT order anything from this establishment. It was my first time ordering a tray of lumpia. I called twice and both times I was told that it was $22.50 for 50 pieces and $45 for 100. I wanted to place an order by phone but was asked to come instead and that it will only take 10 mins. The reason being that they've encountered people that would order ahead and never pick up...hmm...now I wonder why. So I asked my husband to pick up the lumpias and told him how much it cost. He got there and was told it was $50 for 100 pieces. I said I'll call them again to verify and the lady I spoke with said she will let the cashier know. Well guess what! They charged my husband $49.99 prior to making the lumpias knowing I just called! That to me is plainly being DECEITFUL. I was pleasantly surprised that PhilHouse (and the accompanying Island Pacific market) moved in recently. Working in the area, it's a very convenient place to get a bite to eat. If I could, I would leave 2 different ratings: 4 stars for breakfast: you can get a 2-meat combo for $5.49, which comes with rice, a fried egg, and 2 breakfast items. The longanisa (sausage) is very tasty, but the tocino (cured pork) is a little fattier than normal (maybe it's just not cooked down as much as I (usually like). The tapa (marinated beef) is good, but not as good as the longanisa. Also, between 8:30 and 9 AM, there's very few people getting breakfast, so you can get in and out in less than 5 minutes. 2 stars for lunch: there are definitely more selections available for lunch, but the lines are very long. Today, I waited until 2 PM to get lunch, with the hopes of missing the rush. But my hopes were dashed, when I saw a huge crowd lining up at the counter. From the time I got in line to the time I paid, it took at least 20 minutes. Also, the staff seems pretty disorganized, so it had a free-for-all feel to the experience. But the food was very delicious, especially the lechon (roasted pork) and the daing (fried fish). Each time I've gotten food here, the portions have been huge. For example, I was waiting in line and the lady was ready to take my order. Good! But, there were people ahead of me. I had to go take a closer look to see the foods they have and come back to my spot. I finally finished my order, but I couldn't pay yet because I had to wait in line and my food was behind the counter. I wish I can just get my food, pay and go. It's making things complicated, creating two lines - one for the folks; another for their foods. If this strategy of service is going to continue, you may lose some customers who may not want to wait for their food sitting there for many minutes because it's not their turn yet to pay. Ordering was relatively easy but when I got to the cashier, the lady rung up my order wrong...actually, the lady that helped me, wrote the wrong fish on the bag. I told the cashier that it was not the fish I ordered. The cashier opened the bag but still didn't know what type of fish it was and decided to ask the lady that helped me, to identify the fish. It was tilapia but she wrote down pompano which cost more. The mistake was corrected and I paid around $20 for everything. I got home and served the food to my family.
