This was my first time at Philz, and I had to try their highly recommended iced mint mojito and boy it sure didn't disappoint. It wasn't too strong or too minty and I enjoyed the fresh mint. Would definitely get this drink again. I haven't had coffee in a while, so within 30 mins I def felt the caffeine kicking in. Also got the avocado toast with eggs and it wasn't bad, maybe just a tad bit more sea salt would of been perfect. The lady at the bar was super helpful and attentive when I told her I never been to a Philz before and she gave me a whole bunch of recommendations. The rest of the staff was also really friendly and upbeat considering it was around 9am on a Sunday lol. Inside was huge and spacious, plenty of couches and tables and huge windows and lots of natural sunlight coming through everywhere. Seems like a nice place to get some work or studying done. And another plus for them playing island music! Will def stop by again when I'm back in the area. I'm glad I ended up at this location for my first Philz experience. read more

I was originally super excited for Philz to come to Davis because I had heard about all of the hype for Philz from the Bay. However, I was seriously disappointed by the time I made it into the new Davis location. I haven't tried all of the different coffees but I was thoroughly disappointed with the ones that I did try. Cons: - The line is frequently really long, and they don't appear to have enough staff on hand to handle the amount of customers - There is ONLY pour over coffee and the smallest size is still almost $4 - They won't allow you to fix your own coffee, you have to tell them you want milk and sugar in your coffee, but you don't get to determine how much - The whole set up is really confusing such that you order and they give you your coffee without telling you where you need to go to pay. Pros: - It seems like it would be a decent place to study as it has quite a bit of seating. - Once you're able to order the wait isn't too long All and all, it's a fine experience and if you're really into a specific type of black coffee it might be a good place, but it seems like there are plenty of other places in town where you can get just as good, if not better, coffee for cheaper in a better atmosphere. read more

I think one of the best things about Philz coffee is that they are consistent at all of their locations from the bay to up here to down south. This Philz has a great settup that leaves enough room for people waiting in line/waiting for their order and then the crowded areas where mostly students study. They also have outdoor seating which is great that way you can bring a pet along with you while you study, or enjoy the sun. As basic as I am, I always get a mint mojito because it tastes great and has a good amount of caffeine in it to get me through my mornings/ be productive. Absolutely in love with Philz! Solid coffee, good food, and great staff. For a first timer it can be a little confusing. Philz doesn't do espresso drinks; all their coffees are made as pour-overs. However, don't let that fool you, their drinks are nice and strong! When you enter you'll want to line-up in the roped off section if you want drinks. One of the barista's will call you when they're ready to make your drink with love! If you want just food just go to the left of the bar area, no need to wait in the long line. They make your drinks (coffee and tea) with sugar and cream/milk if you want. No real way for you to do it yourself. If you tell them you want your drinks sweet and creamy it's about a medium level sweet and medium level creamy - you can ask them to make it sweeter or creamier. Or you can get it black. Your barista will have you taste the drink and adjust it before you leave. After you order your drink just make your way past the food line and the register will be at the end. You'll just tell them what you got - honor system. You can either pay before or after you get your drink. Recommendations: Iced: Philharmonic sweet and creamy with cinnamon brewed in Hot: Philtered soul sweet and creamy Black: Tesora Tea: Yerba Cam with honey if your stomach isn't 100%. Philz Iced Tea with Honey if you need something refreshing Side note: The guys tend to get your drinks creamier than the girls. But they are all super helpful with a huge smiles and really know their stuff. read more

The drinks are good and unique, but service is not good. All times I've been it has taken around 30 minutes to get drinks. When I was there last at the Davis location, an employee spilled coffee on the ground and none of the workers bothered to do anything about it, didn't even put up a sign around it. After about 5-10 minutes two customers got up to clean up the spilled coffee. Paying customers shouldn't have to clean up an employee's spill. read more

Very excited to have Philz in good ole Davis! Their coffees and teas are absolutely delightful. It probably has to do with the individualized barista concept (which I definitely appreciate). You really can't go wrong with anything on the drink menu because the baristas personalize each drink and make sure you like how they made it! Every time I've been to Philz it's been packed. So consider that if you are in a time crunch. I would say the atmosphere is social but I've seen people trying to study here too lol. I don't know if I'm the dumb one here. There's a chance I might be. But I don't like Philz that much. Their drinks have sooo much sugar that I feel sick every time I go there. I was really excited because of the hype. We were getting our very own Philz! But I've been there twice, and it just wasn't really worth it either time. The ambiance isn't my favorite, because it kind of feels like a warehouse. I don't really enjoy that the ordering line and the paying line are separate. It takes forever to make drinks. Philz makes amazing coffee, and the baristas go out of their way to find the right coffee to fit your tastes. My iced decaf (it was 7:00 PM and I'm old fer Chrissakes) was a Sumatra, and the flavor was on point. Mild, yet rich. My wife ordered a Silken Splendor iced, and she lauded the choclatey notes and overall smoothness. They only seem to offer heavy cream for cow squeezin's which suits us fine. We generally prefer a richer milk infusion. On the flipside, the food they have on offer is not terribly appetizing looking, and we didn't order anything but I feel like there are better options in the surrounding neighborhood. read more

Love the space but personally I'm just not a fan of pour over coffee!! Everyone is super friendly, but I think the whole setup is confusing/ intimidating for someone who's never been to a Philz. There should be a sign about how the 3 lines work. Also, if at the coffee + food lines they took down names it wouldn't be so confusing for the patrons waiting for their order. I love how bright the place is and the number of tables + outlets. I tried Philz for the 1st time when visiting Davis, CA. I got a pour-over coffee. It was good but a bit pricey. Daughter got a cold tea drink. She said it was pretty good. I'm a coffee fanatic so I was excited to try new ones out. Also, note that the size you get is smaller than Starbucks sizes. All in all, I would return if I was in the area of a Philz just as a treat in lieu of the common Starbucks or Peet's coffee shops. Props to the staff. I interacted with a couple baristas and they explained the different drink options I asked about. Knowledgeable and friendly staff at this Davis location. Haha. Okok. This was my first time here at Philz - I wanted to see what the hype was all about. Mind you that it's a Tuesday morning (around 10ish) and there plenty of seating probably because it's currently spring break. Anyways, to the drinks and bread. I'm not going to lie, the drinks are on the higher end ($3.50 for a small and $4.50 for a large) - and that doesn't take into account their other specialty drinks which can add an extra dollar here and there. But let's be real guys, drinks from Starbucks and Peet's can be just as expensive so let's go ahead and take that into consideration. Now, the staff here are super nice and give off that sunshine-y vibe, so I really really appreciate that! My silly a**, however, was not aware that they mix your cream and sugar for you? I thought the barista asked me if I wanted whipped cream, and I didn't, so I said no thanks - but yes to the sugar. I got my coffee, it was black (as I expected because I thought I'd put in the cream myself). I looked for the cream station and nada. I tried to act like I knew what I was doing and tried to inconspicuously look around for the creamers - nada. I even googled Philz to see if they did have cream stations! Now, I got the the Julie's Ultimate, thinking it'd be hella sweet (hence no whipped cream). But I didn't expect it to be black, and I'm not one to drink black coffee...but my prideful self couldn't gather up the courage to go back up to the barista to put some cream in there..so I just drank it as is. Okok. It was good ok. Like good good. It was bitter, but not cut your tongue off kind of bitter (praise the Lord). I'd definitely get this drink again and have the proper mix to give it a chance. But man, if it was good as black, then I'm even more excited for the next time I get it with cream. Additionally, I got a bacon and cream cheese scone (I think that's what it's called). And it was pretty soft and moist. I wanted something savory - because I thought my drink would be sweet..lol...but the bread was pretty delicious on its own. HAVE AGAIN: The hot chocolate was different in taste from others, but still very good. The only problem was despite my being the only person in line and the drink maker being busy with just one other drink, it took a long time to get my hot chocolate. Philz Coffee is a nice spot to get your coffee and snack fix at. I was excited when Philz was opening up in Davis and even now it's still busy as always. The interior is very nice and aesthetically pleasing, it matches well with the general theme of Philz. The baristas working there are super friendly and make an effort to know you and help you get a drink that matches your needs. Overall it's a great place, but many times it gets super super busy and it'll take over 20+ minutes for a drink to come in and some of the experiences I've had with my drinks left me unsatisfied. read more

My friend loves Philz Coffee. I was in Davis and thought.. why not?! I stopped on in, and the queue was totally different for me. You wait in line to meet the barista. She explained how the menu works since it was my first time. I ordered a Philtered Soul, iced, with cream and sugar. Then I went to the food section to pay for my drink. I waited only a few minutes, and my order was up. From the first taste I was sold. Straight up SOLD. It was smooth, creamy and tasty!! I would come out to Davis fairly regularly to enjoy a good cup of joe from Philz. Definitely worth it. read more

I walked in incredibly overwhelmed because there was a lot to choose from, large counters, and so many things that caught my eye. The staff was welcoming and patient I opted for the Unphiltered with heavy cream and stevia. It was delicious. The unique combination of notes changed throughout the sip. I'm a former long time San Franciscan who got to experience the rise of Philz and it's different locations in the city. So I guess I feel like an expert :p Why Philz is great: strong coffee, delicious styles like mint mojito - my favorite, always personal and kind service and yummy eats that don't steal the show but stand on their own as delicious (I love a good bagel). We went early Saturday morning and had a fantastic experience. Veggie bagel sandwich and vegan donut were great. Coffee was strong and delicious. All staff were nice and we had a unique and fun time hanging out and talking. It of course takes a while to become a Philz pro since there are so many coffee options, but don't worry you will get the hang of it I'm happy to see this place close to where I live. read more

Honestly I've had some great coffees there and their baristas was friendly in recommending me the right coffee but if you prefer your coffee simple as black or with cream and sugar then this place isn't for you. Absolutely LOVE coming here on the weekends to get some work done. For some reason, whenever I'm here, I'm SUPER productive and get so much work done in a short amount of time. Maybe it's the smell of coffee or the little energy kick I get from my drink, but MAN does it help me stay on top of all my work. My go-to drink here is the Philtered Soul, light sweetness and light cream. IT. IS. DELICIOUS! It has a slight hazelnut flavor to it, which I didn't think I could like but man am I obsessed. As small is able to get me WIRED for the rest of the day, so I dare not try a large lol. A small is $3.60 in case you're wondering! The baristas are super friendly and always make sure your drink is to your liking before you walk away with it and pay. I've also heard them give great recommendations based on people's preferences, and they're always very happy with their suggestion! If you're a college student looking to spend the day there studying, then you're in luck. They have BUILT IN outlets in some of the longer tables in the store. GENIUS! I really appreciate that they thought about their demographic and where they're located and catered to the college student population. The only thing I will say is that the tables with the outlets are placed in an area where the sun rises. This means, you'll either be blinded by the sun, or you'll have a terrible glare on your computer. I always start off at one of these tables, but end up moving because I just can't see! I wish they had like blinds or something they could pull down over the windows, just for the hour or two where the sun is still rising, but this may be more of a personal problem since I go so early haha. If you're looking to come on a weekend, I definitely recommend coming early to snag a spot. It starts to fill up around 9:30 or 10. I usually get there around 8 AM when I do go to study and have no issues finding the perfect spot. read more
