I may be biased because my heart lies with espresso so take my review with a grain of salt, but I don't looove Philz simply because they don't have espresso drinks and their coffee is very strong. That being said, my husband would give Philz 5 stars because he loves strong coffee and hates espresso drinks! So between my 3 star rating and his 5 star I'm averaging this as a 4 star review. I also don't love the seating -- for as big as the space is you actually can't fit that many people in here. But I do love their avocado toast! So tasty with the za'atar spices. My friends took me here recently. First impressions: loud and crowded! But Davis is a college town, so many students were there, working on assignments and group projects. My friends had been here before so they got their usuals, which they like. Being my first time, I looked through the menu and decided on the Tesora (a medium blend). I got it with oat milk since I can't have dairy, and a little bit of brown sugar. It was good! It was a good balance of coffee and sweetness. We have come here a few times and the coffee and hot chocolate have been really good. They have a lot of different options to make your coffee. The atmosphere is college town at this location so a lot of people and a lot on computers and meeting with friends. It was a little loud but nice to see people getting together. If you are looking for a quick cup of coffee this isn't the place for you since they make each cup with love. Needed some Icy cold caffeine after a good hike at Lake Berryessa and deep fried dumplings. This Philz is by far the biggest and nicely decorated Philz I've been to. Customer service is great. Everyone is smiling and really actually seems like they enjoy their job and doing it with fun. Each cup is personally made, even the brewed black coffee. My barista was super nice and informative with my drink questions. I was debating between the iced coffee and the iced chai tea. He informed me that the iced coffee is double brewed and the fresh chai tea is on the spicier side and cream and sweetener could be added to it. I went for the fresh chai tea in light ice medium sweetened and cream. It was the perfect amount of sweetener!!! I don't like too sweet drinks and he did an amazing job. My friend got the dancing water hot coffee and saved a $1 for a personal cup!! A large coffee for 4.50 was only 3.50. Such a good deal. The first time I came I had the mint mojito which is apparently what they are famous for, I didn't really care for it. I'm glad I gave them another chance, especially in Davis. I'm kind of in love with this place. I have been craving it nonstop and I love that their now on doordash. The staff is super friendly and it's honestly the best coffee in Davis (I'm my opinion) You have to try the pastries while your there. My favorite is the Kouign Amman. It's the most sweet buttery flaky deliciousness pastry I've ever had. I also always get the ancho chili breakfast burrito (not spicy at all but it's great with hot sauce too) since I don't eat pork. I mean you really can't go wrong with super cheesy eggs and potatoes. I love that they display the lgbtq+ flags in the store and let it be known that it's a safe space for everyone. My go to coffee is a medium iced mocha tesora. 10/10 would never be grumpy in the morning if I woke up to a Philz coffee, breakfast burrito, and pastries. read more

I'm not a big fan of coffee but Philz is actually quite good quality. I tried some of their light roast flavors and the mint mojito. Flavor is on point and I definitely feel the caffeine rush. Mint mojito wasn't overwhelmingly minty or sweet and felt really smooth. Love the location, prices are moderate and staff is friendly. Ive been waiting SO long for Philz to open in Davis, and I'm soooo happy it finally did. Came for the soft opening at 11AM, but by the time I got there, there was already a really long line. Took a total of 35 minutes to get my complimentary coffee, but it was worth it. I can already tell this is going to be my favorite Philz location. It has similar decor to the Sacramento location, but it is SO spacious; probably the biggest Philz location I've been to. There are big tables to study on, and even OUTLETS. It'll definitely be a popular study spot. They also offer outdoor table seating which will be nice when it gets super busy. Overall, it was a great soft opening. Everyone was super friendly, and they took the time to explain the business/how to order for those who have never been. I definitely enjoyed my complimentary Tesora and the million of pastries they kept offering! Can't wait to come back. read more

I went to this location for the first time today and LOVED it! The space is huge and comfortable! There are plenty of seats and incredibly comfortable-looking couches available, in addition to the outdoor space. Most importantly, they have bomb avocado toasts, and the prices are pretty reasonable. However, the price of tea and coffee are ridiculously high here ($3.50 for a small tea), and that would prevent me from ever becoming a loyal costumer. My only other complaint would be that the service is very slow, even when they're not so busy. All together, Philz is a great addition to the downtown area! read more

Hands down the best coffee I've ever had in my life! I come here weekly and I love the staff. I'm a mom on a mission and the Philz team always reminds me to slow down, look up and say hello. I appreciate how friendly they are! I pick up the 32 ounce Mission cold brew every 3-4 days for my morning coffee shakes that I make at home (8 oz cold brew, banana, collagen peptides & 4 oz oat milk) and I look forward to it every single day. Customer service is fair and passable. Staff is not very productive during busy hours and sometimes wastes time chatting with each other. Long line, but understandable. Due to religion, I cannot eat garlic or onion. They told me the sausage in the breakfast sandwich has no garlic or onion, but when I checked their ingredient book, it does have garlic and onion. Everytime I went to the bay area I'd always try to stop at Philz. Always got their mint mojito with soy. Now that they are so close I plan on trying every coffee drink on their menu! FYI: There are no espresso drinks here, guys!! Philz does pour overs only!!!! Anyway, my top drink is the mint mojito. They don't charge extra for soy, btw!! I went to Philz for the first time today since I have been meaning to go and I really enjoyed my experience! 1) The atmosphere is very inviting, although it was very busy when I walked in, the baristas were very friendly and said hello. The line moved fast and by the time I got to the counter, I was greeted warmly and taken care of right away. 2) The area itself was really nice, lots of places to sit which is always a plus especially when it comes to coffee shops. Definitely seemed like a great place to study as well! 3) The coffee and the tea is GREAT. I got the iced Mint Mojito and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm really not much of a coffee fan but that I could drink every morning. It was creamy, and the coffee was fresh and the mint really added a nice flavor to it. It was early Sunday morning with only a small number of customers sitting with a coffee and no one in the queue. Upon entering and standing at the counter, three members of staff were there chatting and not one of them looked up or acknowledged my presence. After a few minutes, two more customers walked in, one to either side of me, and both were tended to by the members of staff! I was not impressed with this so spoke with my feet - went out the door and purchased my coffee from Starbucks, where the service was much better. Coffee may be great (I never got served so can't confirm this) but I won't be back to find out due to the poor service (It's CRRRRAAAPP). I asked for a hazelnut latte and was told they don't have hazelnut. Ok, how about a peppermint mocha? No, sorry, we have "essence" of mint we can muddle. Muddle?? When I finally did order something they could make me, it too forever. I was going to go cancel my order after a 10 minute wait and they finally had my coffee ready. I've never waited so long for mediocre coffee. As I was leaving I heard someone behind the counter say I should never come back, so I won't. This place things way, way too highly of itself. Was pretty excited that they introduced a plant-based breakfast sandwich on their menu (Philz Plant Powered Breakfast Sandwich). Ordered a couple of those on the Philz app for pickup along with an iced Mission Cold Brew, creamy oat milk, no sugar. The coffee was great as usual but the breakfast sandwiches were a disaster. Both of them were unusually stiff & stale. It was so dry and it tasted like they've been assembled, stuffed in the fridge/freezer, and reheated. Mine was the worst one of the two: aside from being a mouth workout to chew, there was a part of the sandwich where the bread was rock hard. I had to use a lot of force to break a piece of the bread off (attached a video clip) so that part was inedible. When we're paying $8 for one tiny breakfast sandwich, I expected at least fresh ingredients to be used. Otherwise, better spend your money (about the same price) at Burger Patch across the street or even Starbucks. Careful though, coffee is extremely caffeinated and if you get the yummy sweet drinks (mocha, mint) you won't realize it till you're jumping off the walls a little later. I love Philz! Been hooked on it ever since I first tried it in SF. They do pour-over style coffees here which means each cup is brewed individually and they can offer lots of roasts, mix roasts together, make decaf, half-caf, etc. You choose which blend you would like from their menu list, choose hot or iced, and then let them know if you'd like it "sweet" or "creamy" (cream and sugar). The baristas here are helpful and will walk you through this process if you ask. There's lots of seating here but it's normally all been taken by people studying so I will opt for a table outside or kind of hover around until a spot opens up. I would say this is a GREAT place to grab a cup of coffee to go (especially if you use the app - so convenient), but because the seating is so impacted I'm not sure if I would recommend it for a date or a meeting. P.S. In case you feel like trying my personal favorite, it's a large Philtered soul on ice, made with almond milk, sweet and creamy. read more

One of my favorite spots in downtown to study or do work because the bright/natural lighting and furniture makes the environment really enjoyable. It's pretty to easy to get a spot over the summer but I'm sure it's busier over the school year. I love their iced drinks, but it seems they're pretty inconsistent. I've gotten a mint mojito and gingersnap that were sooo delicious, but other times when they're been too watery or too bland.However, the workers have been very nice about remaking a drink or adding more cream/sugar if you ask. Even people who don't religiously drink coffee can enjoy their iced drinks usually. Also if you use your own mug, you can pay for a small for up to 24oz! It tasted like mint coffee, yuck! Apparently it's vegan too, so asking for milk or butter just got me a confused stare. Bagels need butter. It's not a new concept.
