This is my favorite coffee shop of all time! Only because they seem to always have a new variety of drinks on their menu. My favorite is something called Julie's Ultimate. I have absolutely no idea what is in it, but one day I will find out. They let you test out the coffee after they make it and ask you whether you like it or not. They ask if you want it to be more bitter or sweeter. It's on a range of calling for , " sweet, medium, or dark" and everything else is just great. There are croissants and baked goods in there and they have a mini stage for people to perform. A cup off coffee is pretty much like every other shop which ranges from 3-5 dollars for a cup of coffee. And 10,000 points to the super friendly workers who will converse with you while they are making the coffee for you. The whole place shows what a real coffee shop should look like. It's located next to a really nice bike/clothing shop as well and the environment is really nice since it is so close to the Martin Luther King Library and San Jose State University. If I attended that school, I wouldn't mind going there to get coffee every single day. Oh, and the hot chocolate is really good as well. It is so nicely made and I guarantee that it does not taste the same as the ones from Starbucks. Every person is set out to get a cup of coffee that will suit his/her mood at the moment and Philz Coffee is the perfect place to try something new and exotic. Philz got to be the best coffee around. Wish there where more locations here in San Jose. This location there is always a long line every time I've been here but the barista's get the coffees out to everyone petty fast. The thing that is cool about Philz is that they're pretty trusting ,you order your drink first then you tell them at Cash register what you got and pay I'm stuck on the dark roast coffee here ,the code 33 is my drink medium medium. Parking is on the street or in the garage that you have to pay for, parking on street is all meters i usually drive around till I find a parking with a meter open,I put 12 min on my last visit to Philz and it was more than enough time. If your coming here to study I don't know what times a good time to get here because every time I've been here all the seats and tables have been full with people studying there probably all from SJSU which is right across the street. In town from Chicago, and this was literally the only place that people recommended I stop at in San Jose. First... this place is pour over style coffee, only. They don't do espresso. Second... they have light food, like the obligatory avocado toast, or pastry. I ordered my coffee black... which was confusing to the "barista"?? as she seemed to really want me to add cream or at least almond milk. I steeled her struggle with a compromise of stevia sweetener. Third... the coffee was fine. That is... it's good, the flavor is on par with other small business coffee shops, therefore much better than the chain's like Starbucks or Peet's. Fourth... the atmosphere, well.... it's a bunch of young people who attend the university nearby. All quiet and into their work or casual conversation with their friends. It's a pleasant place to be, so I'm not sure why a few comments were meant about feeling old... nobody seemed to notice me in a way to make me feel misplaced, and I'm 42. read more

I usually drop by this Philz location every time I'm back in San Jose, it's been a while since I've been back. Philz has always been one of my favorite coffee places! I'd recommend getting the ecstatic (it's my to-go order and one of the more popular drinks). I came by on a Sunday to study, and the store was pretty packed, the line was long and the baristas seemed really busy. They worked the line really quickly though and the girl who made my drink was really sweet!! But then I straight up had the most awkward encounter with the cashier, I came up to her waiting to pay for my coffee and I tried to get her attention twice but she was looking at photos on facebook??? Uh, she was kinda rude, I paid, she just took my money, gave me the change and then continued looking back down on her phone, ended up asking her twice for the receipt lol, was a bit irritating. Overall the drink was great (as always) and the baristas were really friendly. The store is really small so don't expect to find too much study space. This place seems more of a grab and go. read more

I gave this philz 2 stars because although the drinks were good, I waited for my drinks for at least 45 minutes. I understand that COVID-19 is around but people that ordered after me were constantly getting their drinks first. I've been to other philz and it has taken less than 10 minutes to get my drinks and I am very disappointed about this service. read more

I know their coffee descriptions are a little weird but don't let that freak you out or confuse you. Just trust your gut and enjoy!!!
