Thought I'd dedicate my 200th to a place where I've spent unreasonable amounts of time writing Yelp reviews for other businesses. Phin Cafe is a sanctuary for the hardcore studier and the once-a-year-catchup-with-a-best-friend-haver alike. Parking is always available, if a bit far, in the 99 Ranch plaza that it's located in, but you'll be hard-pressed to find seating at one of their 8 tables in the afternoons and might have to resort to their standing counter in the back towards the restroom. Natural stone tiles, wooden slats, and hanging lamps create a perfect environment for the cafe jazz that never stops playing in concert with the supporting melodies of coffee grinders and shaker cups. Although the name suggests that they specialize in Vietnamese coffee, funnily enough I don't think I've ever gotten a coffee beverage here. The first drink I ever tried here was their banana matcha, which loved for its natural sweetness and earthy flavor, and as I write this I'm currently sipping on their corn cream black tea (light sweet light ice) recommended by Matt and now, by me. All the staff here are polite, approachable, and local, evident in the familiarity of the baristas with many of those who walk through the door. If you're hungry, they also offer banh mi and other small bites that I also haven't had but appear to be popular. Tried the ube matcha w/ oatmilk, regular sweet and I have mixed feelings. The ube flavoring (which tasted like taro, not ube) took over the entire drink. I came here Saturday morning to do some writing. It was pretty busy with the line coming almost out the door but I was able to snag a table. The cafe is small but cozy with a decent amount of seating. I got the coconut matcha which tasted really creamy. I would definitely recommend getting it less sweet because the coconut cream is sweet. The pandan waffle was also delicious, it seemed to have some small chunks of coconut in it. I love this cafe. Fresh robusta beans for their filtered coffee, "The Phin Coffee" with egg (like custard cream). 411: you have to have a table in order to order this, no "to go" for this drink. I visit a few times a week, grab a seat, and read a book or work while I enjoy that glorious signature set. Also, they have the kindest employees. Always greeting you with a smile and invested in making it a great experience for you. What must be mentioned: their banh mi is absolutely delicious! I've had a good amount of egg coffees around the Bay Area, but Phin remains the best and most consistent for me. It is so good. The other flavors are worth trying too! The inside is aesthetic and is typically crowded with people studying and catching up. Workers have always been nice and fast at making good orders. I just came out of a dental appointment and was craving an afternoon coffee. As usual, I turned to Yelp and found this spot. Super cute setup with friendly service! We ordered the salted coffee and the durian coffee. I specifically asked whether the durian coffee was made with real fruit or just powdered flavoring. While the answer suggested one thing, the actual drink told a different story -- it only had a very subtle hint of durian in the aftertaste. That said, the coffee itself was still really good. I will drive from anywhere in the bay just to have Phin Cafe. This is by far my FAVORITE Vietnamese Coffee & Matcha spot. Some restaurants/cafes might hit or miss on their menu, but they truly never miss & that's why they're my favorite lol. Get Your Phin-tastic Fix..... TLDR: Pro tip order online before you get there so you can just go straight to the pick up station instead of waiting in a long line. First time trying this place and let me tell you the coffee is fire. There are plenty are parking spaces outside. Inside is very small, most of the tables are occupy with students on their laptops already working. not much seating area. We ordered the Pandan Coffee and Coconut Coffee with egg cream. I had high expectations and did it hit the spot. The Vietnamese coffee was strong and it was made perfectly TBH. It did take a while for the coffee to be made and the orders were backed up maybe hire more people to curate the coffees. TL;DR: decent phin coffee; taste wasn't memorable but coffee was very strong (even for Vietnamese coffee standards). BBQ pork banh mi would satisfy a banh mi craving well (tasty but not the most robust banh mi that I've had in the Bay). Ube house coffee was soothing but too light in taste. Egg puffs worth ordering if you simply want a snack with your drink. --------------- First off, the phin coffee. Order comes photogenically in tray format with a phin filter, a glass mug of ice and condensed milk, flavored cream of choice, and biscottis. Very charming presentation of course, but there is no to-go option for the Vietnamese coffee here. Strictly in-shop (cashier staff will ask if you already claimed a table here). Super inconvenient especially when the place is really small and can be packed on weekends. Luckily a table opened up upon me walking up to the cashier so I got to try it! Had it with pandan cream. Taste-wise pretty standard Vietnamese coffee though it's wildly strong lol even for Vietnamese coffee standards. Wished the pandan cream had a bolder pandan taste to it. Overall worth trying if you're able to snag a table here. Other things that I tried were the ube house special coffee, BBQ pork banh mi, and egg puffs. Soothing ube coffee (house special coffees aren't Vietnamese-coffee-style btw) though very subtle ube flavor. Nice light crisp to the BBQ pork banh mi baguette and the pork was quite tasty. A little skimpy on the other ingredients compared to the banh mi that I've had elsewhere in the Bay. Decently crispy egg puffs that would suffice as a nice small snack to go with your drink. I'd say as an out-of-towner I'm not strongly enticed to visit again (glad I tried it though) but I can see it being a rotating hangout spot to locals. read more

This is a really cute cafe. There's plenty of tables and chairs to sit and work. I tried their teriyaki spam and egg ban mhi- this was 10/10. They don't skimp on the spam and the bread was nice and soft. Very flavorful and the veggies didn't overpower the spam and egg. I also got the matcha ube- this was 5/10. I wish they would stop calling it ube cause it tastes like taro. They are NOT THE SAME. Either call it taro or change the ingredient to make it taste authentically Ube. The matcha was good though, it had more green tea than matcha flavor and was on the floral side rather than the green bitter matcha taste. I just couldn't get over the taro flavor. read more

I'm sad that their space isn't that large. When I got there at 11am on a Saturday, all the tables were taken already. Had to go home to eat my banh mi and coffee. Their grilled pork banh mi is very solid as well. The bread wasn't too hard, and the pork was marinated very nicely. I'd say is pretty fairly priced for the size. I've heard so many good things about this place so my expectations were pretty high when I visited. However, I wasn't too impressed by the taste nor quality. I ordered the matcha latte less sweet and my friend got the pandan matcha. I expected a stronger matcha flavor on mine because I got less sweet, but instead it tasted watered down and flavorless. Wasn't too enjoyable & I couldn't finish my drink because it just got more and more watery. I tried my friend's pandan matcha which was much better! I think getting regular sweet is the way to go here, because it helped to enhance the matcha flavor. The pandan flavor wasn't really there though. We came about one and half hour before closing and it was really packed. It was kind of confusing where the line was to order. Staff looked busy so service wasn't great, but drinks came out fast for how busy it was. Ambiance is really cute despite being a bit small. No words, NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT from cashier and barista. I stood there for what felt like a few minutes. A simple "we'll be right with you" would've sufficed. Anyway, he got ice and as I waited patiently because I'm observing that they are refilling things they needed...I waited, calmly and patiently. Finally took my order. One coffee, ONE. With no one else there. Took forever. 2 other customers came and they were asking about the menu. Which is fine. But my coffee sat there, as all 3 were talking over it. Open lid. Then my number gets called. My drink wasn't placed where I can easily grab it because the customers and barista were discussing the menu. Another waiting period. Until someone noticed I was waiting then grabbed it and placed it where I can reach it. Now the cherry on top. I knew by the color it wasn't right. Took a sip and immediately didn't like the egg coffee. Idk what they're doing differently, but I came here a handful of times and it's always the same. Until today. I'm usually understanding but there's no urgency, lots of chatting between staff and the service from the beginning and then the coffee not tasting right made this my last visit. This location is in a plaza near 99 ranch and parking is relatively easy. I recommend coming before 10:00 am, especially if you are wanting to enjoy your drink/food at a table on a weekend. I came here to meet up with a friend at around 9:30 am. It was already pretty full but we got lucky and grabbed a table to sit inside. Inside is pretty spacious and doesn't get too loud so would be a nice spot to study or do work. They also have free wifi to guests/customers. They offer a wide variety of drinks here - matcha, coffee, and their specialty drinks. I wanted to get a specialty drink but was feeling something more hot as it is beginning to get chilly! I opted to get the matcha coffee as recommended by one of the employees. They do ask for sweetness level and you can also ask them to replace dairy with oat milk. I absolutely loved the matcha coffee. You can tell they use high quality matcha and the temperature is just right (not too hot but not too cold). The milk is also foamed up just right. As for the food, they offer a small selection: banh mi, musubi, and waffles or egg puffs. I decided to split a fried egg banh mi with my friend. Their banh mi size is average and not too pricey either. Typical ingredients with fried egg as a replacement for meat. I would have liked the egg to be sunny side up instead of scrambled and wish they offered more vegetarian/vegan friendly versions such as tofu. All in all, a pretty solid place to get specialty drinks/coffee/matcha. I would like to try the pandan matcha specialty drink next time I come. read more
