Probably one of the best Cambodian restaurant in the Bay Area! It was originally located in Oakland Chinatown but they moved to Alameda about a year ago! I have been to their other branch in Oakland and both are amazing! The restaurant has about 10-15 tables so it can get super packed at times. On the weekends, the wait is a little longer but the wait is not too long (at most 40 min). I usually come on the weekdays and I get seated immediately. I ordered their stuffed chicken wings, minced pork with eggplant, grilled pork chops, fried calamari, Singapore noodles, special fried rice, stir fried shrimps with vegetables, and curry chicken. The must try dishes are stuffed chicken wings and minced pork with eggplant! The owners are super sweet and always gives us free thai tea since we have known each other for years! Our server was very nice but the food is just not it. 1 star because I got sick. My partner and I used to enjoy this place in the past, but I guess they got a new chef or just sloppy. Samlaw Machhou beef was very undercooked. Along with that, it was a heavy turmeric powder taste but still watered down. This is a staple dish in Cambodia, so we're pretty familiar how this should taste. We also got the Cha Kathiw, which was overly sweet. It's likely they just threw the bottle of orange chicken sauce it. We are just so disappointed because we really want to support this place and their food in the past (pre COVID) was good. I used to go to the location in Oakland Chinatown so I was reeeeal happy when they moved their restaurant to West Alameda. This is definitely authentic Cambodian food at its finest - no frills or tried to make hip by fusion (not that I have a problem with fusion but I'm sufficiently happy with the food here). My favorite dishes are the Amok Trei and the Troap Ang. They have really different flavor profiles but they're both the boooomb. It's really incredible how much flavor they can pack into each dish. The prices are very reasonable (I'm looking at you, Nyum Bai) and the staff is friendly enough. It can get very busy at dinner since this is a widely beloved establishment so expect a bit of a wait during prime time! This restaurant is where we go to celebrate special events. The food has been consistently great over the years and you can't go without trying the fried banana with vanilla ice cream. Going early when you have a large party is helpful because they do get busy. Enjoy! read more

Really friendly service. The tea was kept refilled all night long and same goes for the rice. We shared 3 dishes and I would not get the noodles (#951) again. There just wasn't that much going on and the other dishes were more interesting and satisfying (and I love noodz in general). The restaurant has a cozy setting, but nothing too fancy. I think the price point is about right and 3 dishes should be enough for two people with rice etc. The prices vary, but after tax and tip without drinks, it will probably be around $50 give or take. There is a ton of selection of different types of proteins and different styles of dishes, so everyone should be able to find something they like. Had dinner here a few weeks back. This Alameda location is much easier to walk to from a parking spot. The interior decor is decently striking! Food was still very tasty and yummy. We stopped by because a companion had heard great things. We got 109 spicy papaya salad, 213 samlaw machhou phnom-penh seafood soup, 639 Hamok trei steamed fish, 951 cha kathiw panfried noodles with shrimp. All four dishes were excellent and we everything pretty fast. It was not spicy and I don't usually eat spicy food. I have never been to Cambodia before but the food was pretty good and definitely something I would try again if passing by. I am not sure what the bill comes to, but I would say with tax and tips under $100. We were in the restaurant from start to finish about 1 hour, it was pretty fast service. I came here for dinner with some friends when it wasn't a busy night, with the exception of the giant 12+ party next to us. Unfortunately due to this, service was slower than usual with attention primarily focused on the large party about drop big bills. Regardless, the food was delicious. Spicy papaya salad was, well, spicy. I didn't think it would be as much but I for sure broke out in a sweat. Good with a burn. Stuffed chicken wings are a must get because they're adorably plated but also delicious. The Cambodian pad thai was also good, full of flavor. I spotted Phnom Penh Restaurant while driving down Webster St. during one of my weekly visits to Alameda so I decided to give it a try. At around 9 pm which is close to their closing time there were about 2 tables full. After going through the menu, I settled on Sachkor Cha Ktis ($8.99) which as per their menu is tender beef simmered in curry flavor peanut butter sauce served w/ cooked spinach and steamed rice ($2) to-go. I could pay using my card so no issues there. During the short 10-minute wait for the food I was served some hot tea. I got two containers one with the curry which and the other with the rice. As expected the curry had a strong ground peanut taste but in a good kind of way. The spinach was cooked well and overall to my surprise the dish came together very well. As I liked what I got I stopped by a second time and this time got the Sachor Cha Somdech ($8.99) which as per their menu is beef sautéed w/ sweet pea, mushroom, bamboo shoot, carrot & onion and steam rice ($2) to-go. I was really impressed with this dish. The beef was not chewy and the flavors were not your generic Thai food variety and seemed to be unique to the region purported by their name. Overall a pretty good experience. Price-wise they are in line or maybe a tad below what you will pay for similar dishes in Thai restaurants in Alameda but the taste of their dishes is unique. The portion size is not very big but enough for one person with a moderate appetite. My only complaint is that they give the entrée in a paper box (like the one that you get the rice in) which makes it completely soggy by the time you reach home. For most people it would not be a problem but for someone who must eat out of the box it becomes a bit of a hassle to have the container disintegrate on you in the middle of your meal. I think they should just charge some more for a to-go container and give the entree in a proper plastic box. Hard to find Cambodian food, even in the Bay Area. The food was as good as I remembered from Cambodia. We had curry prawns which were perfectly spiced and a grilled flattened chicken which also had a lot of flavor. Would have liked a bit more pickled cabbage on the chicken plate. This place is my jammmmmmm. Inexpensive, large portions, high quality, fresh meats and veggies, super tasty, fast and warm/friendly service? YES! Far from trendy and more for those looking for authentic eats at a great price. Since then, I've been coming somewhat regularly as it really is just consistently so good. I usually end up going a bit later and so never a wait, but to be honest the food comes out so quickly that I'm sure they turn those tables over. Beer is $4. I'll throw that out there. Food is about $8-$14/15 and it's all good. I've had curries, rices, noodles, steak, chicken, vegetables, tofu and everything is extremely fresh. The vegetables are bright in color and clearly purchased that day. The meat is plentiful and again, no frozen goods here. Not stringy and tough, but juicy and tender. Spice factor could be amped up, but I'm sure that's nothing they can't fix if requested. You honestly can't go wrong with anything and the only thing I've had that I wouldn't order again are the spring rolls; sadly a bit bland. It's a mom and pop place and they are sweet and efficient. While my parents felt like the flavors at Phnom Penh weren't as distinctive as other Asian cuisines (they prefer Thai food), this restaurant serves up tasty dishes on this side of town. I really had fun ordering things I can't pronounce. Bonkea cha jee (prawns with green beans and bell peppers), noum kreap jean (egg rolls) and kary tei (fish curry) You've got to order the sweet basil fried rice as well, it's so tasty. I've never had Cambodian food before so I'm not exactly sure if this is the BIZnatch but I for sure enjoyed all my food (except maybe the noodles I would have passed on) I came to Chinatown to do some grocery shopping and just so happened this place was the block over. Good old trusty yelp nearby app before they changed it! wAHH Bring that button back! I need to know the restaurants nearby. Anyway I digress, the waitress was super nice about showing us the dishes that would suit our taste. I was really into the lotus rootlet salad, it was tangy and pungent and had a nice kick. Probably my favorite dish on the table, that and it felt really healthy. The stuffed chicken wings were okay, interesting slight curry taste that resonated in the background. The noodles were a skip for me...they looked like it was a bad attempt at Pad thai but it tasted like it had ketchup in it or something..... I really liked the fish, I don't know what they put in it, but its spicy and flavorful and great. For my first set of reviews for 2014, I wanted to share a few places I recently visited in Oaktown and No CA. Phnom Penh House by Oakland Chinatown is the sister restaurant to the restaurant with the same name on MacArthur in Oaktown, and Angkor Grill in Alameda. Wikipedia says Cambodian cuisine can be described as one of the world's oldest cuisines, with an emphasis on simplicity, freshness, seasonality and regionalism. Its understated use of spice, harmonious arrangement of contrasting flavors, textures and temperatures makes Cambodian cuisine unique. In addition, its extravagant presentation of dishes with plenty of herbs, leaves, pickles, dipping sauces, edible flowers and other garnishes and condiments also distinguish Cambodian cuisine from others. We ordered the fried calamari, papaya salad w/ ground chicken, grilled chicken, shrimp & scallops, noodles (similar to pad thai), and beef w/ peanut butter sauce over spinach. I can't remember exactly how much each dish cost, but I do remember they were approximately $10, or less. Unfortunately, the calamari didn't have much taste. The batter wasn't heavy, but it also did nothing for the dish: 3 Stars. On the other hand, the papaya salad was very good. The papaya was fresh and crunchy, while the ground chicken was nicely spiced: 4 Stars. The chicken was nicely grilled, but other than that, it didn't have much flavor: 3 Stars. The shrimp & scallops were fresh, as were the peppers and onions, but this dish didn't have much flavor either: 3 Stars. The noodles were aromatic, but didn't have much other ingredients: 3 Stars. Lastly, the beef dish looked like dog food. It tasted better than that, but we were a bit disappointed in the flavor of the dish: 3 Stars. The ambiance is very quaint. This location is a small restaurant w/ 12 small tables and 2 larger, round tables: 3 Stars. The service is very good. Our waitress was super friendly, the food came out quickly and another lady filled our water glasses: 4 Stars. My overall assessment is that the food used to taste better (my friends who joined me agreed). On this visit, the food was nothing like the description of Cambodian cuisine above. However, if you are looking for a change of pace from Chinese or Thai food, Phnom Penh might be a good option for you. read more

It is always our go-to place for dinner. Food is delicious and service was very warm and attentive.

Place has quite good food. Locals frequent the place. It can get busy, so we try to go in between lunch and dinner. Fair prices which for us is usually $17 per plate. Service is good. Place is kept clean with floors swept when there is a break in customers. Parking is tricky sometimes City of Alameda reduced available spaces under the plan to make parking safer. Also, lock your car and have nothing visible as is the advice anywhere in Alameda currently, as you do get occasional hater with empty backpacks and hanging down pants looking into car windows. (In fact sadly last week after we exited the restaurant, we were 'direction changed' followed and my wife's purse etc eyed in a very concerning 'closing in on us' way, to the point we had to enter a store to avoid an incident. read more

Had a late lunch at Phnom Penh House after seeing it on "Check Please". I was able to get metered parking on the street. We ordered by the suggestion of the server the following; Spicy Papaya Shrimp Salad 4 stars not very spicy but good. papaya shreds nice and thin. Sauce not over powering. Lemongrass BBQ Beef Skewers 3 stars beef was tender very sweet almost like fruit beef jerky. Chicken Curry 3 stars very bland chicken leg meat falling of the bone.
