I'm finally back here. The restaurant is Vietnamese and is located at 252 Broad St. in Manchester, CT. It's been quite some time. This is possibly the largest pho (Vietnamese) restaurant in the state (next to Pho Boston). The decor is real nice too. The menu is huge. There are a lot of options including classic Vietnamese non-soup dishes (one of which I am getting). Unique items include salmon spring rolls and salmon noodle soup. There is no music. That should be on while they're open. The owner, Pete, immediately serves me a huge glass of ice water with a lime. It's warm outside so it's very refreshing. For my drink, I'm having a Nuoc Chanh (fresh lime). Nước chanh is a classic Vietnamese limeade, known for its refreshing balance of tart, sweet, and occasionally a hint of salt. In Vietnamese cuisine, "chanh" usually refers to green limes, though lemons can be used as a substitute abroad. This is good! It tastes closer to lemonade. For my appetizer, I am having the Goi Cuon Ga (chicken spring rolls). Gỏi cuốn gà are fresh, non-fried rolls filled with poached chicken, rice vermicelli, fresh herbs (mint, cilantro), and lettuce wrapped in thin rice paper. They are a light, healthy alternative to the traditional pork and shrimp version, often served with peanut hoisin dipping sauce or fish sauce (nước chấm). These are light and easy to eat. The cubed or diced or minced chicken is a different approach I haven't seen before. Add sriracha sauce for a little kick. These are good! They do serve everything on styrofoam plates. Adding some ceramic plates would be a nice touch. For my entree, I'm having the ga luclac (also known as Shaking Chicken). This is stir fried chicken breast with mixed vegetables and white rice. Vietnamese Shaking Chicken (gà lúc lắc) is a popular dish featuring wok-seared, cubed chicken thighs marinated in soy sauce, oyster sauce, and garlic, resulting in a caramelized, savory flavor. It is typically seared at high heat to create a crust, served over greens with onions and tomatoes, often accompanied by rice. I've asked for extra spicy. Let's see what comes out. There's always sriracha sauce as a last resort. This is more like it! It's served sizzle hot! That's a big portion! This tastes great! It's nice to be served by the owner himself! Pho in Hartford is like pizza in New Haven: whichever one you say your favorite is, three people will line up to tell you you're wrong. So my advice? Don't concentrate too hard on trying to figure out if Pho 99 is the best the region's got. After all, luminaries like Mrs. Lee's and Pho House are gone, but Pho 99 is still here, and it's still so damn good. As a vegetarian, I love the tofu and veggies in Pho 99's pho chay. The pillows of tofu have the right combo of chewy skin and pliant interior, there are the right amount of auxiliary veggies, and the slender noodles always melt and dissolve just so into a silky oneness with the broth. I love the slight cinnamon smell in the broth and the way it gets better the longer it sits there, absorbing the squirts of sriracha and the bean sprouts you dump in. If you want something else, take it from my husband, a philistine on whom the delights of all soups are wasted, who says he adores their shaking beef. Family run, consistently delicious, and not overpriced at $20 for a large bowl, Pho 99's enduring goodness is a reminder of the astronomically high level of Vietnamese food in Hartford we are privileged to enjoy. read more

The Pho is wonderful and offered in many variations- always served with fresh crisp sprouts, basil and hot pepper to be added as you like. Tried Pho for the first time here, and I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. I ordered a shrimp pho with rice noodles, and I loved the flavor. I have sensitivities to gluten, so the option for rice noodles was a great surprise. Something I loved was the additions like hoisin sauce, bean sprouts, and lime that you could add to the broth to make it to your taste. Additionally, the ambience inside was cute and comfortable. The outside of the restaurant is a little disarming, but once you go in, it's incredibly welcoming. The owner himself served our table, and you could tell he was passionate about his food. If you want to eat some of Connecticut's best Pho, look no further! Delicious broth filled with noodles, meat and herbs that all come together perfectly in the tastiest way. The spring roll appetizers are all wonderful and the perfect accompaniment to a bowl of tasty soup. One big bowl of Pho will fill you up without weighing you down. The business owner can often be found greeting customers and chatting with you as if you're family. He genuinely cares about the food we consume and only serves the best. Update: great service, good food, very pricy Came here again because 501 sold out. They are still very friendly and the quality of the food is pretty decent. My biggest gripe has been pricing, and that's still very high for a pho place. If the dishes offered were more ample with their portions, or with more ingredients added to reflect the cost, then this would be an easy recommendation. But they price themselves out of their market, and don't do enough to justify their pricepoint. If you got a craving for pho and don't mind paying a premium, it's very good but basic pho. read more

A great find!! Staff super friendly and attentive. Restaurant was clean and comfy - Plenty of seating. We had the fried dumplings and the Eye-Round and Brisket Beef Pho. Dumpling meat was delicious- I personally always prefer a pan fried dumpling to a deep fried, but the flavor of the meat was delicious. The Pho was wonderful, deep flavor and a great go-to soup on a cold windy day. We ordered a medium and split between two of us - so we each could customize the base. Great local pho!! It is always amazing and fresh pho! The owners are kind but be aware if you order a to go order online, they still wait for you to arrive before putting your bowl together so it maintains freshness and the noodles don't get too soft, so factor that into the pick up time. Right out the gate the service was amazing. The gentleman in the front was kind to everyone who came in. He was kind and quick. The interior is fine, very busy and lots of signs, but it looked clean. Unfortunately, for the price, the food just wasn't all that impressive. I got the crab rolls as an appetizer. 18 dollars for two spring rolls (not fried) and frankly once I bit into it, was mostly filled with vegetables. The way they're rolled it makes it look like a lot of crab. And it was served on a paper plate. Which I normally wouldn't care about, as long as the food is good. But if you're charging 18 dollars for an appetizer I except a real plate and the crab I paid for. The oxtail noodle soup was good. Plenty of oxtail and the portion was massive. This felt a little more inline with the cost. It tasted good, nothing special. You get a small plate of bean sprouts, one jalapeño, and one lime on addition to what is in the picture. I didn't get any drinks as, others have said, they're expensive. 3 dollars for a can of soda. No fountain drinks. With a meal this large, plenty of soda would be appreciated. Overall, I would recommend this place because of the service and pho only, but pricey appetizers and mid food are not worth the effort in my opinion. For 50 dollars you could eat a much nicer place that served everything on a real plate. read more

What a cute atmosphere! The host greeted me upon entering. Gave me the menu and took my drink order quickly, then he started stocking supplies at the table. It was nice to see he had gloves on while stocking chopsticks etc. I also loved that the hoisin and siracha sauce has plastic cups to cover the tip. There was a wide selection of meat to go with the pho. I was excited to see lobster and ox tail meat to be an option. Despite being excited about this- I went with my typical pho order of beef flank and rare beef. I have to say, they really loaded up on the meat and I was super happy he gave a cup of hot sauce to go with the pho. Overall food, service and atmosphere was on point. We went here for my sister's graduation and the owners were SO sweet and kind. It was the afternoon on a weekday, so there were not many patrons, so we were absolutely spoiled by amazing customer service which made us feel right at home. This is my second time here, first being a while ago. Service is friendly and quick. You are greeted as you enter and seated. Menus already on the tables. The waitress gave me a sample of their spicy broth and told me to try that next time. I thought that was super nice of her. The spicy broth was good but it had a slightly sweet taste to it. Could be coconut milk. The outside of the place is well painted and stands out. Inside has a homely theme and seating spread out nicely. Coming to the food I felt the cost was a bit higher for a Pho Noodle soup. I tried the special which has all the beef meats including meatballs. On your table they don't have a salt and pepper shaker. Or a sauce plate. You get the usual condiments but I prefer dipping my meat in a siracha and hoisin sauce mix although the co dime ya were available, there was no plate for sauce. When I asked for pepper I was given a plate of sliced jalapeños and I was charged $2 for it. Usually Pho restaurants give a generous amount of Jalapeños for free. The soup came with one Jalapeño. I have to give it 3 stars for the expensive cost, and charging extras for condiments. All in all food and service is great. read more

Was helping a friend out in the area and saw this place as we passed by to find out he's never had pho!! I was determined to show him what this feel good food was all about. At first I was a little nervous about having him try pho for the first time at a place I've never visited, although I'm glad we stopped in. We placed the same order: shrimp spring rolls, avocado smoothie, and brisket pho. The avocado smoothie was actually on the sweeter side than what I'm used to, which was perfectly fine because it was fantastic. The peanut sauce that came with the rolls was warm and ohhh sooo good! And as for the pho, well, just wow My friend and I both left very full and very happy. I'll be eating here again and I'm sure he won't be passing by without stopping in again in the future. Came here for a taro and watermelon bubble tea. Wasn't really impressed by it. The bubbles were a little hard and didn't have much flavor. It was a little expensive for the size. It left me wanting more and didn't really satisfy the craving that we had. Browsed through the menu and the prices were also high. I would prefer going to other locations; even with it being convenient in Manchester, the drive to get better prices and possibly better food will always win for me. read more

My go to place Is usually their location in East Hartford. I usually get pho when I'm feeling cold or have an upset stomach. I buy the pho not made because I like to cook it at home. I got a large beef and it was $17, I'm not sure how I feel about this. This price will prevent me from purchasing In the near future. The soup is good and reliable. I usually order the soup with extra bean sprouts and no noddles but this time I got noodles since I was going to share the soup with my husband. Solid tasting soup just very expensive. read more

This is not a five star, white tablecloth French restaurant. I understand that inflation has impacted everyone, but this is an owner who is taking advantage of his customers purely due to greed. I first want to say that this place makes a really good bowl of pho and everything on the menu is very delicious and high quality. However I'm updating my review to three stars due to the prices being higher as well as the amount of meat in my most recent bowls of pho. This place has a higher price point than most other pho places nearby, $13.50 for a regular size bowl. Because of the higher price point I was hoping to have a decent amount of meat in the bowl however the shrimp bowl only had about 4. The chicken bowl only had a few slices of chicken as well. Love this place. I often get pho to go if I don't feel like cooking. My dad loves this place too. They recognize him and even gave him a pho 99 hat. So cute. He just got out of the hospital and, of course, requested pho so I got a bunch to go. YUM. Everything is wrapped separately and tightly so it travels well and NO leaks. Not a huge fan of the prices and service, but the food was otherwise alright: A small group of us (5) went here after an evening event. Got here after 8:15, so given that closing was at 9 PM, the place wasn't super packed. We ordered a reasonable amount of food, three bowls of pho, the shaking beef entree, and an egg roll app. The special pho I got was pretty good. Noodles were nice and tender, with a nice clear beef broth, and a good amount of the good beef stuff (meatballs, tendon, etc.). However, the price for the bowl was surprisingly expensive. At least +50% more than other pho places. The egg rolls we got were also really expensive - two rolls for $8. That said they were pretty decent. My wife got the shaking beef; I nabbed a little to try and found the flavors pretty good too. We didn't particularly love the service though. As it was a few minutes before 9 PM, someone on the restaurant staff turned on and off the lights, like intermission at a theater show. Shortly after, the staff came around and picked up our bowls of those that finished (we were waiting on some of the slower eaters still). Then, the check came out without our prompting. I mean, I get that closing is at 9 PM and we did already feel bad about keeping them late, but most restaurants generally let there customers at least finish their meal in peace.
