Some notes - - The booths was cushy and tightly squeezed together. There was barely enough leg room for the two of us. - Had some issues with cleanliness, that the seats and table were slightly sticky. Had to wipe off a stray piece of beef upon sitting down. - Tried the Bánh xèo, which was definitely worth trying! It was huge, though it shied on the meat and went heavy on the bean sprouts. The pancake itself was crispy and paired nicely with the dipping sauce. - The pho satisfied the craving, on the slightly salty side, the noodles were clumped together initially, and had quite small portions. $12 a bowl though, so it makes sense. - Was eating until closing (~ 9pm), and they patiently waited for us to finish up and head out. Was craving something soupy and spicy during the rainy days and decided to give Pho Ban Mai a try. Ordered one of my favorites the Bun Bo Hue or Spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup. The soup was delicious with a tangy (thanks to half a lime) spicy broth and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The meat however was less than ideal, very fatty and so I had to remove most of it. The meatballs were slightly better but still not as good as some other Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego serving this soup. I had an AWFUL experience at this restaurant last night. We ordered spring rolls and asked the servers whether or not there were peanuts in the dish due to an allergy and they said no there is not. Next thing you know, two of us end up having an allergic reaction and leave to go take care of ourselves. Our food had came out when we started feeling symptoms, so it was left untouched. We come back and let the servers know that we do not want to continue eating because of what just happened. Instead of being understanding, she first starts off with, "No I can't do that," and we argued that she had told us there were no peanuts, yet we had a reaction. She comes back after speaking with the manager and takes it away. Great! Two of us don't eat. Why is there an auto gratuity on our check that was hidden? Our friend was nice enough to tip without knowing that was added so the tip became 50 dollars. Outrageous especially after our experience. Came here on a Sunday afternoon for an early dinner, was promptly seated for a party of 2. Ordered online through their QR code as there was nobody waiting on us at the time. My boyfriend ordered the Bo Kho (beef stew, served with french bread) and I ordered the Pho Tai (pho with brisket and tendon). Both of us were not impressed with the food. I remember way back in the day (15 years ago or so) this used to be my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Mira Mesa because of their soup base, but now honestly it's gone way down which is pretty disappointing. The tendon that was served in my pho wasn't quite cooked all the way so it was pretty tough to chew, and there was also tough and chewy beef pieces in my boyfriend's Bo Kho as well. He didn't end up finishing what he ordered because of the bad quality of the ingredients. Honestly will probably not come back given this experience. I was visiting my family in San Diego and they wanted to meet up at Pho Ban Mai in Mira Mesa. We usually go to a different Pho place down the road but, to be honest, I wasn't sure I'd like this place because of the low reviews. I was quite surprised to find I really enjoyed the food here! Pho Ban Mai is nestled within the same plaza where Rite Aid, Boiling Crab and Seafood City are located. It was a little hard to find because the signage wasn't as visible. We were seated quickly but we had about a dozen family members and we were split into separate tables. Note: This restaurant is not made for large groups; however, the staff were accommodating and made it work. Because of the smaller group seating, the orders were placed by table number. For example, there's a QR code which launches their menu and you would place your order from there. It's pretty cool actually. But if you're someone who does not have a smart phone, you'll be ordering the traditional way through a server and, from our experience, the language barrier was a challenge. We ended up placing 3 group orders due to our split tables but we were able to ask to pay on one big check. A few things we ordered from our table: * Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio (Vermicelli with Grilled Pork and Egg Rolls) - This is great for sharing. The dish itself is plentiful and you have your carb, protein, and veggies. This came with an egg roll, which is filling on its own. * Grilled Pork with Broken Rice - This came with a side of pickled veggies and a perfectly rounded scoop of steamed rice. I believe you get the option of fried rice or steamed rice but we opted for the latter. The taste was delicious! * Pho #1 - House Special Noodle Soup - It's just standard that we order the first pho option whenever we go to a Vietnamese restaurant. The broth had a good flavor and it wasn't oily. * Beef Steak Cubes with Fried Rice and Salad - Bo Luc Lac is a family favorite. The beef cubes are always tender and juicy and comes on a sizzling hot plate. It's perfect served over steamed rice. And the nuoc cham (fish sauce) flavors the dish with a sweet and salty umami. Overall, everyone enjoyed the food. Ordering was a little chaotic but we were able to get that settled quickly. I'm glad we gave this place a shot - the ratings are low but I guarantee you, you'd be surprised how good it is here! You won't know til you try it! read more

The food is delicious, but the service is less so. Everything in our order came out fresh and with a generous side of vegetables and herbs, I would just be very vocal if you have allergies. I ordered Banh Xeo with only meat because I'm allergic to seafood and I didn't bring my medications. (My partner ordered separately on the app for a rice dish, so I gave a pic of that but unfortunately not my banh xeo.) When they brought it out, there was shrimp in it, so I called the server let her know that I was allergic. :( She was very nice and took it back right away! The problem was the older gentleman (chef? Every time I've been here, the service has been terrible. I always end up with these young servers who act like they're too good to be working and they will actively avoid going up to you if they know you're about to ask for something. One time I was here, I waited 25 mins just to ask for a to-go container. I've gotten their pho a few times now and it's pretty good. Not the best pho I've had, but I think it's one of the better ones in the area. I always ask for my rare steak on the side and they give such a generous amount of meat! I've also tried their brisket and it's okay, but very fatty so I wouldn't want to get it a lot. I think the pho broth is delicious and not overly salty (always a big worry of mine). Came here Jan 18 with my family. 4 out of 5 of us have been here multiple times! The only things that weren't favored were the iced Vietnamese coffee and the orange chicken. Ryan said the orange chicken was mainly breading, little chicken. Everything else was good. The chicken in the pho was cooked perfectly. The egg rolls are so tasty. Portions are big.
