Needed a late night meal and this was the first spot we found still open. Had the Pho Chay. It was good. Not amazing, but not bad either. The veggies didn't look the freshest, but that was ok. Unfortunately we didn't finish our food. Because we saw the HUGEST roach climbing up the wall. GINORMOUS. The thing should start paying rent. I really tried to keep eating because I was hungry. I was pleasantly surprised. A friend and I came here at the last minute before attending an event because a Pho place that we planned to go to was closed that day. Note-I didn't have super high expectations going in. FOOD: Good food! I was satisfied. The Pho had a good broth and the noodles are done well. It comes with the standard sprouts, jalapenos, and mint. They also have both sriracha and chili sauce at the table. I'm pretty sure both of us got the "small" portion but we both were content. SERVICE: The food came out pretty fast. Reasonably priced. We seated ourselves. The servers were nice and quick to bring things, and even though it seemed a bit rushed, they were definitely understaffed so considering that 10/10. I personally wasn't the one the one that went to place the order or pickup the food so I don't know about the customer service or cleanliness of the place. All I know is that my boyfriend was going in for a bite of his pork chop rice plate and saw a long piece of hair mixed into the rice. Almost like it was cooked in with it in the rice cooker. We tried to call before their closing time but they might have closed early because no one picked up. Even before finding the hair we were already complaining about the rice being so dry and hard. I used to come here often with my family when they first opened years ago. Just tonight I decided to stop by with my boyfriend and sister since we didn't want to drive all the way to OC for Vietnamese food. This young girl who looked like she's in her early 20s took our order. We ordered 2 orders of spring rolls and 1 order of fried rice. 15, 20, 30 minutes later, our food still was not out. A man who looked like the manager came over to ask us if we even got our order taken because it was never entered in. Their workers then started talking in Vietnamese to each other asking why our order wasn't placed (I'm Vietnamese I understand everything). Then the manager brought out the menus and asked for our orders again. By that point we were all very upset and lost our appetite, so we decided to just leave and eat elsewhere. It was a Saturday night at around 9:00pm when we arrived, one hour before they closed. They barely had any customers at the time, and those customers all already had their food out. This has always been and always will be my go-to place for pho. Ever since the first time I tried their beef pho, I've been hooked. The broth is literally the best thing in the world, full of flavor, subtle hints of anise, a slight sweetness, warm, comforting, and simply unparalleled. One sip will lead to another and another. I like to add sriracha and chili sauce for kick, but that's just my preference, it doesn't need any improvement in reality. The portion of beef is generous, the noodles are well-cooked, and the "small" portion is more than enough to fill me up. On the occasions that I've bought the large size, it's been enough for two meals. For less than $8, you're getting an awesome deal. My other favorite here is the chargrilled beef on top of vermicelli noodles. The beef is super tasty and again, the portion size is plentiful. We came here a few times I must say they have improved A LOT. It was good before, but they have definitely made their food even better! We ordered a large beef combination pho and a shirm crab meat tomatoes soup noodles. Both are delicious! Their large is really a legit large size. Unlike other pho places we have been to which only add More noodles. This ace really put a LOT of ingredients to their large size bowl. I shared my tomatoes soup noodles with my daughter and we still have left over and couldn't finish! My "go-to" Pho place around this area is Pho So 1. They are generous with their portions and their eggrolls are thick and meaty. While driving there one day, we say a Grand Opening sign advertising 15% off your bill at Pho Consomme. I figured what the heck, we can check this place out to satisfy my Pho craving. They have their own parking lot, which I like since it reduces unnecessary traffic. We walked in, and man, this place feels fresh and airy due to it being cold from the A/C. I hate places that are stingy with their A/C, or worse, don't even turn the A/C on. At least for today, the A/C of this place is working at top notch. I ordered my usual, Pho Tai, and also got some egg rolls to snack on. The egg rolls were okay, they didn't provide cucumbers or carrot sticks that usually comes with egg rolls. The Pho itself is not bad, but it was also priced in the same vicinity as Pho So 1, or maybe even a little higher. For this price, I expected more portion in my Pho. I mean, what's the point of going somewhere else to pay more and have less? The only way I would go here over my usual Pho joint is if I am running late at lunch and want to bypass the crowds at Pho So 1 during peak lunch time. Unbelievable. I came in, got seated immediately, picked up the menu on the table, and was disgusted... They didn't clean my table! Ordered: 1) Pho Chin Sach Bo Vien (brisket, tripe, & beef meatballs) - I specifically told the waiter in Vietnamese no onions or any of the greens and emphasized it again at the end of the order, but what did I get? A bowl flooded with green onions. There were so many issues with my bowl of Pho. The broth was not prepared properly (I may not know how to make Pho but I know what good broth tastes like). The noodles were undercooked. And the briskets were overcooked--they were so soft, they fell apart. I am still so surprised this was served to me. I couldn't even finish 1/10th of the bowl. This has to be the worst bowl of Pho ever. 2) Bun Thit Nuong Dac Biet (Dry Vermicelli Combination with Grilled Pork) - When the bowl was brought out, they were messy and dirty. It did not look appetizing. When I tried it, what I thought was supposed to be Grilled Pork (Thit Nuong) tasted like Grilled Beef. I didn't come into this restaurant expecting much service from them. I told my waiter I didn't want any drinks or even iced water. He brought me a cup anyway, which was alright--I didn't care. When I was ready to leave, I asked for the check and a to-go box. Normally I would have walked up to the counter and pay but this restaurant seems to operate differently (or so I thought), I asked for a check instead. Rawr... 5 minutes later, nothing! The waiter forgot about us. Fine. My friend went up to the counter to pay, and the same waiter had the nerves to ask if we got our to-go box. Seriously, this has to stop. I don't know what happened here. It's been a while since I've been here and it was really good when I first came but I guess things have changed. Came here for dinner with friends at 7 pm last night. It was PACKED. I wasn't that hungry so I got the spring rolls and I still wanted some soup so just ordered a small bowl of broth ($.50) which I thought was the perfect combo. I loved it here when I first came because the broth was light and not oily but this time around the broth they gave me looked 50/50 oil broth ratio a little like my eye make up remover before I give it a good shake, but I'll say it was flavorful. The spring rolls on the other hand were really good but the peanut sauce is different than most I've had its a more watery consistency than the creamy nutty stuff I've had at other places. My friend's bowl of pho there was so much noodle in there he was trying to distribute the soup around the noodles like it was sauce. They were really busy so I understand that they were really slow to service but yeah just keep in mind you're gonna have to wait a while for them for everything during dinner rush. There's a small lot behind the restaurant and also street parking readily available. WOW I never!! I sooooo wanted to like this place but it was a total bust from the beginning. 1. The vegetarian options are AWFUL. I got the Fried Rice with veggies and tofu and the rice wasn't even fried. It was a disturbing yellowish color that didn't resemble any fried rice I ever had, and the veggies were frozen peas and carrots. Something you could make at home on a lazy Wednesday. It was an OK dish. I wouldn't recommend it at all. LESSON: NEVER GET BACK OF THE MENU ITEMS!!! 2. The bathroom was filthy. FILTHY. Walked in and a large turd was floating in the toilet. (Had to kick the toilet handle to flush it, didn't wanna touch the handle). It was toilet paper covers all over the floor. It looked like a public restroom in a park -_- LESSON: Dirty Restroom = Dirty Kitchen = Dirty Staff 3. The kitchen was FILTHY. I sat near the swinging door and caught a glance of the kitchen and was petrified. Cut up boxes on the floor to absorb water or keep the staff from slipping. The floor was visibly wet. Plus it was food particles all on the floor. It wasn't a great sign. A messy kitchen = food poisoning in some occasions. Luckily I didn't order any meat but I was worried about dookie fingers in my fried rice. LESSON: NEVER EAT WHERE THEIR A DIRTY KITCHEN 4. The staff was sooooo confused. They mixed up more than one order. They gave me someone else's Tofu Stir-fry. It was at my table for a good 2 mins before they realized it and before I could figure out it wasn't what I ordered. They took it to the man behind me which i thought was kinda awkward since I was breathing over his food seconds prior. But he got his revenge when they accidently gave his table my FRIED RICE!! Came here with my friend last night because she was really craving pho and I hadn't had the opportunity to try pho yet. So she recommended Pho Consomme. At 6pm, it surprisingly wasn't too crowded, we were seated immediately. I let my friend take the reigns with the order, since she knew what was good, so she ordered two thai iced teas, an egg roll appetizer, and two rare steak phos. We weren't waiting long at all before all of our food arrived at the table. I would've liked the egg rolls to come out a little before the pho, but everything came at the same time. The thai teas were ehh. We think they let the tea steep a little too long because the tea tasted bitter and unpleasant. The egg rolls were DELICIOUS. Nice and crunchy, with a great filling. The sauce was awesome, a good mixture of sweet and tangy. The pho was pretty good. Light, tasty broth, soft, thin noodles. They gave us a plate of little things you could add to personalize your pho: basil leaves, cilantro, slices of jalapeno, and beansprouts. Pho was nice to try, but I found out that I'm not really a fan of it. I don't really like cilantro and that was the primary flavor that I tasted. It wasn't bad, but I just won't be craving it or dying to have it again. Service was hit and miss. They were quick about taking our order and seating us, but when it came to needing more napkins or settling the check, it was bad. We tried to flag down a few servers, to no avail. They just hurried past, without even a glance in our direction. We probably waited about ten minutes just staring at each other before they realized we wanted to get our check, a box, and leave. The Thit Nuong (BBQ Pork) was smothered in the sauce, which was bomb. --#94: Vermicelli noodles with filet mignon. I didn't think i'd like this dish as much as i did. I literally split this into three different meals for myself. That's how much food they give you. The beef is marinated with onions and it's set on the side. If you combine the lettuce, some beef and onions with the noodles, and then put some fish sauce on it, you're solid. Tip: GREAT for To Go/pickup orders. Darn, was hoping to be first to review. I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. The place was pretty busy, but most people had their food. I was brought to a single person table facing the TV. (Thank goodness!) I was brought a menu and the guy asked what I wanted to drink. I asked for iced tea. I got a class of lukewarm tea, no ice. Oh no. Y'all know how I am about iced tea. This is not a good omen. They have the usual Viet menu items and a few extra like the consomme dishes, including some that you cook yourself at the table. Those start around $17 and go up from there. I ordered a small bowl of pho tai nam and an order of banh xeo. 20 minutes later, two different waiters have come by to tell me my food will be out shortly. My banh xeo arrives first. The good, the shrimp was already peeled. It has a beautiful color but the crepe is mealy and has no flavor. Luckily the nuoc mam is delicious and I used every herb on the plate. I wouldn't order it again, however. Thai Lai still has the best banh xeo in the Southbay. Several minutes later, my soup comes. Did I get to enjoy my soup when I got it? Nope. I was not given a spoon. I had to wait until a waiter comes by to ask for one. Many Viet places have them on the table, that would be my suggestion for this place. It is a bowl filled to the rim with meat and noodles. I wonder if there is any broth in there. I poured some hoisin on the banh xeo plate and dip the meat from my soup. There is quite a bit of meat in there. It is cooked well. The noodles, however, were just terrible. They didn't absorb any of the flavor of the broth. I don't know if they were old or what, but they just seemed too rubbery for me. The broth was a dark color (maybe they boiled it instead of simmer it). In any case, it had a deep flavor of anise. I liked the broth greatly. There were about five people working, but service was just awful. They were nice enough, but you had to flag them down and ask for simple things like a spoon. I never did get any ice for my tea. Everyone else got the check brought to their table. I got mad and went up to the counter myself. This place comes highly recommended by a Vietnamese gentleman whose name will go unnamed, because if I mention his name, every woman who reads this will start badgering me for said gentleman's number, but in any case, he pulls in the server and gives him/her a good talking to, and then out comes our food, and it's a spectacle. There are heaps of soy beans and mint and sliced jalapeños and delicious basil, there's hot broth and slippery noodles. For some there are soft and tender slices of pink beef, ready to be dunked in the juicy medley of love (hey, pipe down, will you?), and of course there's hoisin, chili and fish sauce. Sometimes I'll order the shrimp paste skewered on shoots of sugar cane. You read that right, but did you understand? They lay it on a bed of noodles with shredded veggies and the aforementioned fixings of your choice, it's a real good way to lunch. There's a spicy lady from Louisiana who will also go unnamed (for different reasons) who gets the fried fish, and it too is a spectacle: crispy and brown, soft and fleshy on the inside, laying on a beautiful bed of bright green lettuce, seducing the eye with a promise of liberation from hunger and poverty in taste...and one last dish I'd like to mention (though there are many more to choose from); the seafood and noodle tomato soup. Looking for a new pho place for lunch, I decided to venture to this place and try out their vegetarian pho. It's always nice to find a place that will offer pho with vegetarian broth (rather than the traditional beef broth)! The large pho was quite a generous portion, they gave plenty of the toppings as well (basil, lime, etc)! The pho soup itself was meh, to be honest. It tasted like canned vegetable broth heated up... nothing special and it definitely did not taste like other pho I've had. I tried to douse it with sriracha and hoisin sauce to add flavor, but it still didn't do it for me. Plus, the vegetables and tofu were a bit large in size... Not quite bite-size, which made eating cumbersome. I will say the noodles were good and tasted fresh. Overall, this place is just okay in my book. The pho here is great the broth and the noodles are very flavorful. They are usually not too busy so you never have to wait. I usually get the number 7 pho which is pho with rare steak and brisket. The brisket is amazingly tender and is great. The drinks are great too. They have thai Ice tea and thai coffee, which are strong but great. They keep suggesting fresh squeezed orange juice, but I still haven't tried it. I like their thai tea too much. If you do not want to eat in or too shy to eat by yourself or have to go back to work/home, you should call ahead to take out. I would think that pho is not really good to take out, but one time when I was sick it was amazing. I got take out after work and went home to eat and sleep. But usually I just take pho out to make my roommate jealous while we watch netflix and eat dinner. They separate the pho broth, noodles, veggies (bean sprouts, black basil leaves, limes, hot peppers), and sauce(hoisin and siriacha). Its a build your own meal but its great! There are also random times when they have checkin specials, so check the board in front of the restaurant it usually has them on there. The special is not on yelp. The last one they had they gave you a free soda. Parking is a bit complicated. There are only 5 spots in the front of the restaurant, but wait theres more! There is more parking around the building on the side and the back. It's more like a drive thru. But if you can't find parking there, just go in the neighborhood. read more
