The beef rib soup + banh mi combo was a little misleading - literally beef ribs, soup broth (no noodles) and baguette but not a sandwich. Still good though. We also got the pho filet but only because they did not have brisket or flank. The egg rolls were probably my favorite part of the meal, which comes with a really garlicky chili sauce. Confusing! A hidden gem...You can eat here but the food is actually next door at the South Bay Restaurant. So this is the offshoot cafe but you can sit here. Anyway, lesson learned, we will sit at the South Bay restaurant next door. I love Banh Cuon which is really hard to find outside of Westminster/Garden Grove but alas, here it is in Hawthorne! It was fantastic. My husband ordered the Pork Rice dish which he enjoyed as well. The Uncke and Auntie that b work here are really nice. This will be in our Viet food rotation. So I'm not sure if this spot is connected to South Bay restaurant next to it, but I've been here twice. First time I parked on the street and felt like I was coming into someone's house in Vietnam. A bunch of uncles/aunties watching TV eating and drinking with some guys talking in the back. Super casual and laid back - that's when you know the food will be good. Tried the bun Rieu - Pros - you get a lot of proteins for sure 3 minced balls, 3 piece of cha chien ( fried fish cake) 3 fried tofu and 1 blood cube. Ask for shrimp paste to elevate the broth taste. But the most important, and the one that can forgive rude waiters and an interior that hasn't been updated in 30+ years, will always be the food. The broth looked pretty clear but it tastes deep which tells me they boiled it low and slow for maaaad long. I don't think there was a pork hock in it but I didn't care. I drank all the soup. Came with fresh veggies. Their iced coffee with condensed milk was straight jet fuel crack so naturally I loved it. The total cost of the meal was so cheap. After church, I wasn't willing to make the hour drive to Little Saigon, but I decided to check on Yelp to find any viet restaurants that sold Hu Tieu Nam Vang and I found this spot! It is hard to find good, authentic Vietnamese food in LA... it can never be as good as Orange County, but at their Hu Tieu Nam Vang - it hit all of the right notes! My only complaint would be I think they use a chicken broth vs pork for the dish. It wasn't as rich as I'd like, but other than that it made me feel just a bit less homesick. Cafe Nho and South Bay Vietnamese Restaurant are located right next to each other. We arrived early Sunday morning around 8AM as this was one of the few pho restaurants open early. They open everyday at 6:30AM! There was plenty of parking in the rear. AMBIANCE It literally feels like walking into a restaurant in Vietnam. It doesn't feel like one of those other pho restaurants catered to Americans in the South Bay. This felt like where all the local Vietnamese go. It was clean and plenty of seating. SERVICE The two servers were very friendly and smiled a lot. I wasn't sure if it was because this is a traditional Viet restaurant or it was super early, but they didn't stop by throughout the meal to check up. To be honest, it didn't bother me at all. FOOD We got the Bun Bo Hue and Pho. When I first saw the Bun Bo Hue, I thought it looked watery but it was soo FLAVORFUL. The Pho broth was also very tasty. Both came with generous amount of meat. We also ordered Banh Mi sandwiches, but I didn't like them as much much. The pickled vegetables weren't flavorful enough (missing more sugar/vinegar flavor). PAYMENT They do take credit card! Out of all the Pho places in South Bay, this place and Pho Hue Oi are the most authentic restaurants in the area. However Pho Hue Oi is always super packed and tables are close together. They have the ingredients but the soup tasted a bit diluted. I went super early in the morning before work so I can't say how busy it was but they have a small parking lot in the back so that's super convenient. You know you've come to the right place when all the people sitting and eating are actually eating, not on their phones. Ok so yeah, no one was wearing masks and seating was entirely full of only men when I walked in. The guy working the front didn't really speak English and kept telling me only sandwich, so I got a sandwich. I tried to order a drink by miming it, and ended up with him giving me a free cup of tea. After a few more attempts, cause I saw other people taking out delicious looking boxes of food and drinking iced Vietnamese coffees in take out cups, I managed to ask when some young guys were nearby to help translate and got a delicious coffee. Watching the coffee technique was something! He pulls a few spoonfuls of condensed milk in, pours from a metal tea container, and then looks like he's churning the whole thing into a froth with a spoon going up and down real fast. The sandwich was pretty darned good too. So this place was't for me at all, which is a shame. And definitely not during COVID. Everything I got was great and I'd love to try their other food. I first heard of this place because one of my coworker knew the owner. We always ordered food here every weekend because they have very good Vietnamese food for only $7 and no tax. The owners are very friendly and know me by know because I go here at least once a week to get the Vietnamese coffee. However, I wouldn't recommend dining in because since it's a Vietnamese cafe, smoking cigs are allowed indoors. While the owner smoking inside the restaurant, right beneath a no smoking sign, was funny, it was anything but appetizing. Neither was any element of the sandwich unfortunately. The bread was flat and OK at best, not the fresh heavenly baguette I'm used to. Then the fillings were pretty blah. Even the cucumbers were slimy and not very crisp at all. Bottom line, I'm no expert but this was the lamest bahn mi I've ever had and the inside of the restaurant reeked of smoke. It's been illegal to smoke inside California restaurants for ages and ages. I am constantly amazed by the wealth of amazing ethnic eateries within walking distance of my house. Vietnamese places aren't too rare around here, but I hadn't seen a specifically Vietnamese sandwich place in the neighborhood, so I was excited to try out Cafe Nho. My husband and I walked from our house Sunday morning to find the place busy with about a dozen customers inside. No one gave us direction so we just sat at an empty table. When no one came to take an order, we just walked up to the counter to ask for 2 sandwiches: the House special and the ground pork. After enduring just 2 minutes of the thick cigarette smoke in the place from at least 4 of the customers smoking in violation of the posted "No Smoking" sign, I decided we'd take our order to-go and went outside while my husband waited for the food. For 2 sandwiches in a place that only makes a handful of items, it took a surprisingly long time. The sandwiches were delicious though. And the other commenters are right about the bread - it's great! I'd love to go back and try the other things on the menu, but I don't think I could stand the heavy smoke filled air in there. The restaurant operators encourage the violation by providing small tea cups for the smokers to use as ash trays. My smoky experience was definately not a rarity. I have to recommend this place only because it's hard to find this type of food nearby. But do be prepared for the foul air and get your meal to-go. read more
