I love this family run restaurant. I just think it's so sweet when I see the kids helping out the family. Even without the kids, I love this place. The Bo Luc Lac is AMAZING. It's similar to Joyee's Beef Cubes over tomato rice but better! Their pho is also amazing. The broth tastes very clean and refreshing. I can't say their service is the most attentive but they are always friendly when you call them over and get you whatever you need with no attitude. Food 5/5, Service 4/5, Price 5/5, Experience 4/5. Well, I give props for a few things here... 1 location, 2 how they have managed to stay in business 3. friendly fellow who is a great host welcoming and treating people. What counts is the food, and regrettably two things we got, well were misses and this was based on the raves from a pair of family friends who swear by this place. so we tried the pho that they said was to die for, well we ordered a pho and ordered a rice and beef entry. The pho was not spectacular but average, not sure that I can trust my friend's raves. However it was the rice beef that really sucked. It came out suspiciously fast, like McDonalds fast... it was dry tasting like I had someone's left out left overs and the meat was semi cold. Not to make a fuss with our friends who were ravers of this place, we ate and paid and vowed not to try it again. Sorry about that. My advice to visitors, if it sucks then complain politely, provided you are not with friends that seem to love the place. read more

This place is an alright place for Vietnamese food. I ordered the pho bo, which comes with thin slices of beef tenderloin. I've had my fair share of pho in many places, but felt like this place was average. The pho broth is very clean and not too heavy, which was great. I did like how the serving portion was just right. Usually pho places serve (unnecessarily) large portions. I felt like something (flavor?) was missing in the broth. May have to come back again and give them another try to really get a feel for this place. read more

This has really become a local institution, and for good reason. It seems to me that I've been missing out on some damn good pho close to where I live for a long time. All those times I've been driving out to Argyle to get some pho, I could've just drove 10 minutes and gotten the same thing. They don't really have the 100+ items on their menu like Tank Noodles or Pho 777 but their pho is not only on point, it's freaking delicious. You know that soothing broth that can calm your stomach down, makes your headache go away and clear your sinuses? Yes my fellow skillets and homies. This will do that job. And I love how they load up on the sprouts! They are little skimpy on the thai basil but all you have to do is ask for little more. No problemo! And for spring rolls, I've tried both shrimp and the beef. You can't really go wrong with that right? But then again, Dung Gia uses marinated beef which enhances a dull flavor of spring rolls. I know you are supposed to use peanut sauce but what if I was allergic to peanuts? What? Use Sriracha or Hoison? What if i can't handle the spiciness or the sweetness? Personally, if you can't handle none of the above, what the hell are you doing at a Vietnamese restaurant? But if you still demand to go eat spring rolls at Dung Gia, that marinated beef adds flavor to a rather dull tasting spring rolls. Anyhow, this place has really good pho. Broth is clean tasting and soothing. Something you will definitely need when you are hung over, and freezing in winter. I'm sure I will frequent this place more! Better yet, I might even go today. So I read all the Yelp reviews, checked all the tips, and looked at all the photos on this place. An hour later, my Pho finally arrived. In fact, the 13 year old waiter brought our check before he brought our soup and looked at our empty table puzzlingly. Suffice it say, the service was atrocious. On the other hand, I would rate the food a shake below mediocre. This my was first Pho experience and I wasn't too impressed. I may have had better soups from a can. My girlfriend is closer to an expert than I, and assured me that there's better stuff out there. This place was just too close to home not to try. I think the food here is good. The service is so bad though that I couldn't tolerate another meal here. The staff speaks very poor english and this was extremely difficult when ordering. They are also extremely unfreindly. When they took our order we were also placing a to go order for another family member and they just gave a blank stare and were nodding when we said this. When a different person was cleaning up our plates we asked if they were preparing our to go meal...he looked like a deer in the head lights...came back with the owner and then they started cooking...The fun didn't stop after that. The bill was added up incorrectly 3 times and I had to show them how to add up the total. I love vietnamese food, but the service and inpolite staff aren't worth the hassle here. This place is run by the people who had Annam Cafe in Evanston. I sure do miss that restaurant, so every once in a while I'll drive to Des Plaines to go to Dung Gia. The food is very fresh and delicious. My dining companion loves their TOM RANG TOI SATE (Jumbo shrimps cooked with pineapple, onions, tomato and spicy sauce). Dung Gia, You let me down on my last visit. Sure you expanded your restaurant and doubled your table tops and yes you still have great menu prices. But all of that doesn't mean much if you can't get the orders out in a timely manner and all at once. Yes we had a relatively big party, about 8, but we waited forever just to put our orders in, followed by a long wait just to get few people at our table served. And then I watched as half the table enjoyed their food. What a shame. All that good food for nothing. It was such a horrible service that we probably won't come here ever again. I'm pretty sure they hate us here...we usually come in with a group after church on Sunday. And you can tell by the look on their faces that they dread it. If you're OK with "whatever" service and occasional dirty looks, then it's still a good place to go to get your pho fix when you're in the area. The pho broth could be a little more flavorful, but maybe they have to water it down when we come in groups like that? I don't know. Other than that, I'm fine with adding my Sriracha and Hoisin sauces to add a little more flavor. The portions are pretty small, considering I can finish a whole bowl on my own. This is a VERY small place with only about 7 tables. Luckily we caught then during their down time. The service was good and fast which was good because once again the natives (our kids) were restless. The items were ordered by numbers and included appetizers, traditional Vietnamese dishes, vegetarian dishes, noodles, fried rice, specialty of the house, and beverages. Our appetizer was great. The kids ate it all up. (#13, Banh Xeo - crepe with shrimp, chicken, bean sprouts served with lettuce, cucumbers, cilantro and special sauce.) We ordered four different items for dinner. I ate all of mine as I adore tofu so my husband only got to taste it. The sauce was the perfect mix of sweet and hot. (#42, Ca Tim Dau Hu Xoa Si Dau - eggplant and tofu with garlic soysauce.) My daughter asked for noodles but only ate the tofu. After a bit of coxing she ate some of the noodles but asked if she could have more tofu and less noodles next time. (#50, Mi Xao Dau Hu Hay Tom Hay Ga Hay Bo - egg noodles with a choice of shrimp, chicken, beef, tofu or vegetables with bean sprouts and onions.) My son ordered fried rice but ended up eating my steamed rice. If I had room I would have ate this too. The sausage reminded something but I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was good. (#51, Com Tay Cam - traditional Vietnamese fried rice in a clay pot with chicken, Vietnamese sausage, ginger root, and shitake mushrooms.) My husband is notorious for ordering the hottest thing on the menu and this dish was no different. He lured me in by saying the beef had a hint of lime then you taste the spices. I however tasted nothing but hot and then proceeded to get heartburn an hour later. (#61, Bo Tuong Cay - marinated beef cooked with bell peppers, onion and spicy sauce.) Okay, let me be candid. Danang and Ho Chi Minh City wasn't exactly on my 2011 travel itinerary. I can't tell you, how authentic these broths are. I can't assuage your concerns that you might not be getting pho like in the back country. Here's what i'm gonna tell you. You go in to this diner, you're going to get a spectacular Vietnamese dining experience. You order the pho. Your going to get a great base of noodle and a small plate topped with variety of add-ons such as Jalapenos, mint and sprouts. You want adventure--go ahead--throw it all in there. It's a big bowl too. So while you let your fine spices co-mingle, you can sit down with your compadres, discuss the fine things in life like the Bears, summer-grill outs, and Sears power tools. All while your meal stays warm and fresh. Add some of those airy spring rolls to the meal, and you're going to walk out of this place feeling like a champ. read more

Not sure why this place doesn't have enough great reviews! I was thoroughly impressed with the food and it is a local family-owned restaurant and I highly support these kinds of businesses! I went with my boyfriend and we got the classic pho with all the meat and curry beef rice. The soup came with the usual bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeño sides, and the curry beef rice came with a side of soup. The soup had a refreshing broth -- probably the same as the pho soup broth. The pho was very tasty and my favorite part about the meal was that it didn't feel too greasy or heavy. I felt like the amount of food was just right and I felt pleased with the combination of flavors. The curry beef rice came with a bowl of curry beef and a side of rice. It was very tasty, slightly spicy, but there wasn't that much beef, but had potatoes and other vegetables. Overall, I highly recommend this place. The entire bill came out to be less than $20 and my boyfriend and I left very satisfied. read more

It's been like 5 weeks since I went to this restaurant, so I'll say my review will be more objective than if I had written it immediately after going to dung gia. I stopped by for a quick lunch one day and order the salmon clay pot, and shrimp fried rice. While the rice wasn't greasy for $8/9 the amount of rice was laughable, not to mention the 5 total shrimp I got. Flavor waa decent at best. The clay pot salmon I ordered was terrible. The fish had a stinky smell to it, and it didn't taste fresh at all. It was so hard and overcooked I wanted to send it back. Actually the salmon reminded me of the frozen individually wrapped salmon I buy from Costco. They probably quickly thawed it out and made my dish. Portions are so small here. There aren't many vietnamese restaurants in the area so I guess if you're desperate for some vietnamese food this will have to do. Place was overpriced for the quality and quantity I received. My husband and I have been coming here since they opened in Des Plaines. I think the food and service here are excellent - especially compared to Argyle St choices (we've been going down there for 20 years - so we are pretty familiar.). I find the service warm and friendly - definately family oriented! What I like best about Dung Gia is the Vietnamese Pancake - not one of those sweet cakey creations at a pancake house but a delicious crispy crepe-type creation that is very rare at Vietnamese restaurants. It is filled with shrimp, roast pork, onions and bean sprouts- you then add your own fresh herbs/toppings from the heaping portion provided. Its' awesome and a delicious meal on it's own!! Their Pho soup is good - so is the clay pot salmon, rice noodle stir fry and fresh lime soda. read more

It was a cold chilly night that needed to be warmed up by a hot bowl of pho. Only problem is I didn't feel like going to Argyle and my normal spot was totally out of the way. Found this spot via yelp and figured lets try it out. I ordered the Pho Ga. Two things it was lacking was chicken and noodles. When you reach in your bowl and can pick up all the noodles with one small flick of the chop sticks. So sad. The broth was good after i added some flavor to it. Barely any of the meat choices that were supposed to come in the Special, no tendon. Two sprigs of Basil for two bowls of Pho?!? Many places mix chicken broth w/their beef broth but you should still predominantly taste beef or the different Pho Spices. TERRIBLE SERVICE!!! We were barely greeted by our server to the point where we didn't even know he spoke English. Another girl who gave us menus did not speak at all. A couple who walked in after us were served their water, menus and food before us. Not acceptable. I requested our Pho to be spicy. Our request was not granted. The Pho was bland. My boyfriend could not even eat and so I asked for our food to wrapped up to go. This took forever and they never came back to our table with it. We had to go to the counter to pick it up. Before yesterday, I had never actually been to the Des Plaines area, only driven through, and I was pleasantly surprised when my friend suggested getting pho together. The whole area is super cute, albeit a little too quiet. I'd definitely like to come back and explore a bit more. But anyway, onto Dung Gia itself. The free parking right outside was a nice bonus. I ordered the specialty noodle soup, which were pretty much like your usual pho order with the rice noodles, a variety of meats, and bean sprouts and other vegetables on the side. I found myself greatly enjoying the noodles themselves. Sometimes noodles can be too soggy and overdone, but Dung Gia's noodles were the perfect texture and elasticity. With that being said, I thought that the meat that came with the noodles was a bit sad in terms of the amount and the taste. Otherwise, the wait staff was relatively friendly and attentive. When this place opened, we came fairly often. Even though the selection was more limited than we're used to, it was nice to have a closer alternative to pho than going down to Argyle. We've since stopped. The service was always a bit uneven and the quality seemed to slip. The last time we went, the broth for the pho was just off. It's worth the trip to argyle if we want Vietnamese. It's better, cheaper, more varied, and a much bigger serving. I guess if you have a craving and don't feel like driving, this place will do fine. I started going to Pho Dung Gia when a more local place in Edison Park closed. It's been years now, and Pho Dung Gia is still my go-to place for fresh, dell Vietnamese food. I found this place by accident. We got lost driving around and I was shocked to find a Vietnamese restaurant so close to home! I made a trip to the restaurant a week later. Since it was our first time at the restaurant, we decided to order different dishes so that we can sample more items. We ordered the Vietnamese crepes (banh xeo), Beef Noodle soup (pho), spicy beef noodles (Sate Mi), fried rice (com tay cam), and Catfish and Tamarind soup (Canh Chua). Banh Xeo - It was very well made. I'm use to having mung beans in these but it goes well without it as well. Pho - The pho was also good. The broth was nice and clear (as it should be...muggy broth just shows that they did not take their time skimming the broth). It also had a nice light star anise flavor to it. Sate Mi - I haven't really gotten a good Sate Mi in the Chicago area so I had to see how it was here. It looked a little bland when it came out so I wasn't really expecting much. But when I had my first bite, it was so good. Spicy and good. This dish was actually someone else's but it was so good, I ended up eating half of it. Canh Chua - This is one of my favorite dishes so I was very excited to judge them on this. You could order this with rice or rice noodles (bun) and you also get to choose between salmon and catfish. We got it with rice and catfish. It tasted like they cooked it with fresh tamarind. Most restaurants I have gone to uses the packet seasoning to make this soup so I was very impressed when it tasted so fresh. Com Tay Cam - I wasn't quite sure what this was because I have never seen it on a Vietnamese menu but when it came out, it turned out to be the chicken rice casserole my mom use to make for me when I was younger. It has chicken, dried mushrooms, chinese sausage, and ginger in it. The ginger gives it a slight sweetness to the rice. Some notes to be aware of: The staff is very nice but service was slow on my first visit. It was very crowded that night so it seemed like they had a hard time keeping up. The second time, it was less crowded and the service was much faster. No dessert. Plan to get dessert elsewhere. Dishes I order had an ok amount of meat. It was perfect for me because I don't like a lot of meat. Overall, I had a great experience. Dung Gia is now in my restaurant rotation. You must try it if you are in the area. Only been here twice. Each time it satisfied my need for pho. After you have been to Argyle, its so hard not to be snobby with other viet restaurants. The food came out quick. The broth was bland and i think i had like 3pieces of meat in my pho.. total. The appetizer came out after the pho was delivered and the basil/beansprout plate trailed a few minutes after we began eating.. I will come here as a last resort fix, but i think id rather take the extra 30min drive in the opposite direction to get some full flavored soup. read more

I keep trying to like Dung Gia since my group of friends seem to be a fan of this place. We've come on multiple occasions for lunch specials and dinner. I've had better pho at places on Argyle and the tofu with vermicelli was only meh. Also, service has been slow at times and they've made some mistakes on my friends' orders. However, it's not all bad. The lunch specials are well priced and some of my dining companions enjoy their curry.
