Crepe? An amalgamation of textures that likely shouldn't exist? Soggy mushy texturally just unappetizing and wet, the bottom of the container had a solid coat of water on it so everything inside was just mushy. Green curry, curry flavor good but that's where it ended for me. The tofu was totally mushy. Lychee juice, I love lychee but this tasted artificial and very watered down. Our visit was a mixed bag of some highs and major lows. I'm not sure there was anything that wowed us to entice a return visit any time soon but if you find yourself here, I can at least recommend the massaman curry and pad woon sen noodles. The massaman curry here is insanely creamy and tasty, with a hearty helping of vegetables. We ordered it with tofu, which came in cubes of the soft, unfried variety. Paired with rice, this was a winning dish. The pad woon sen - a savory glass noodle dish - can also be ordered with one's choice of protein. We liked it well enough with the chicken, and found it to be well-seasoned. Our server brought us some hot chili sauce on the side, and the spice lover in me was only too happy to heap spoonfuls of it over everything. Our interactions with servers were...interesting. One of our servers seemed rather terse and cold, while the other hovered a little more than I would've liked. When he saw me taking out my camera, he reached in to take my fork. He used it and his bare hands to rearrange our appetizers, seemingly for the pictures. It was a raised brow moment for us, as was finding that our coconut shrimp neither tasted remotely close to coconut and that it was still frozen in the middle. We pointed this out to our server, who apologized and took it back. But instead of bringing out a fresh plate, it turned out they'd just refried our original pieces, even the ones we'd half eaten. Much as I'd hate to raise alarms for such a small and homely business, we couldn't help but wonder about whether it was sanitary to recook eaten food in their deep fryer. This restaurant has been described in lots of other reviews as a hole-in-the-wall, which feels true. While it's more spacious on the inside than it seems on the outside, there's a smallness and intimacy to the restaurant. The menu is also fairly short and streamlined to a few categories. Ordered a few items for takeout. I called when they opened and they said they already ran out of brown rice, so that was a little strange. This time, we tried the somtum lao (which comes with a side of sticky rice), pad khee mao, and some sort of crispy sticky rice. I liked these menu items much better. The somtum lao was a little salty so the sticky rice definitely helps. Pad khee mao was standard, but my favorite was the crispy sticky rice. Went to this place because there was a wait time nearby and we were starving. Boy I'm glad that happened. I'm a big pho enthusiast. Nothing beats the warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you eat a good wholesome pho (except for ramen, but that depends on the mood). This place is a hidden gem inside a mall. I love the concept of build your own pho. They have options of up to 3 or up to 5 mains other than the standard ingredients. You also get to choose either bone broth (among the best I've had!) and vegetable. The place is a lot bigger on the inside than what it looks, they have an open kitchen concept which I loved and the service was excellent. One of the few places in NJ where you can get authentic Laotian and Thai food. The name is a little misleading as it is definitely not a traditional pho place. The owners are friendly and the servers are quick to help navigate the interesting menu. Do yourself a favor, look at the daily specials first, there are some really cool and unique gems on there. We tried the Somtum Tard during our last visit, which included a variety of different dishes, kind of like a Laotian pu-pu platter! On the regular menu, the crepe is the standout, it's crispy, chewy, and that dipping sauce is heavenly. You have to end your meal with Khanom khrok, they are Thai coconut pancakes and they are scrumptious. They are an interesting mixture of savory and sweet, perfect way to end your meal here. Decent authentic Thai/Laotian restaurant with a few areas for improvement. I ordered the Yum Woon Sen ($20), which was a plate of clear noodles with a bunch of other stuff like meat and veggies. I can tolerate some spice but not too much, so I asked for only level 1 spiciness. Let me tell you, if this was a level 1, then I needed a level 0, because it was still way too spicy for me. Other than the spice itself, the food was not particularly flavorful. I'd say the quality was okay. The portion size was large, but if I ate it all, I think my tongue would've burned off. Dessert though was a completely different story. I ordered the Mango with Coconut Sticky Rice Berry ($9), which was one of the best of this classic Thai dessert that I've ever had. The mango was the perfect ripeness with none of those fibers inside at all - juicy and fresh. The purple sticky rice was delicious and coated in lots of delicious coconut cream. The restaurant itself doesn't have a particularly nice atmosphere - the lighting is not very good and there is some Thai/Laotian decor but personally I didn't find the place to look exactly nice or aesthetic (maybe that adds to the hold in the wall kind of vibe though). I do think the food is very authentic though. There was just one lady running the show but she was not particularly attentive, claiming that it was a very busy night (didn't seem crazy busy to me though). She was moderately friendly and the service speed was decent. Overall, the excessively spicy and otherwise not particularly flavorful noodle dish along with the slightly subpar atmosphere lead me to give Pho Thai Lao Kitchen 3 stars. First thought that came to my head when I tasted their food was --- the food is definitely different that what we expected - some good, some ok. My wife and I are always seeking out new restaurants to try in the area, either for takeout or dine-in and I stumbled upon Pho Thai Lao on Doordash. Typically, when ordering takeout during the day, we try to look for restaurants with a lunch special menu, since prices are usually a few dollars cheaper there. Unfortunately, Pho Thai Lao doesn't meet that criteria, BUT don't let that deter you from ordering from their unique menu still! When looking at their menu, at first glance, it might like your typical Thai restaurant menu with Pad See Ew, Pad Kee Mao, Pad Thai, Thai Fried Rice, Basil Fried Rice, Pineapple Fried Rice, etc., etc., but if you take a closer look, there are quite a few other dishes that you probably have never, ever seen before and that's because Pho Thai Lao is ALSO a Lao restaurant (as you can obviously tell by the title). Honestly, I'm not familiar with Lao restaurants or cooking, but if you're seeking Laos-inspired dishes, there are plenty of those to choose from. And with Laos restaurants seemingly quite the rarity in this neck of the woods, or country for that matter, take advantage of being one of the few areas with one! To give the restaurant a chance, we spread the love and ordered 4 different dishes to try: Pad See Ew Noodle Pho Soup (Lao Style) Lad Nah Noodle Massaman Curry Everything was pretty good and I keep saying different, but they really were foreign to my usual palate. The Pad See Ew wasn't the traditional dark colored, salty, egg-filled Pad See Ew I was used to at Thai restaurants. Instead, there were ALOT of mixed vegetables in there and the noodle was a much lighter color with a light brown sauce on it. The flavor was not what I expected as it had a sweetness to it and less saltiness. I assume there was a Lao touch to it. The Lad Nah and Pho Soup were also very interesting. To be honest, they both looked on the bland side because of the colors of the soup bases. With the lighter color, came the assumption that it was more "watery", but the flavors were not bad. However, we still prefer more salty, flavorful pho noodle soups, like the ones served at Viet restaurants. Saving the best for last, the Massaman Curry definitely stole the show for us! First, we loved that they gave a WHOLE 1 qt tupperware full of curry and potatoes. Not only that, but it was deeeelicious. Honestly, it's hard to use an entire quart of curry on just the 1/2 quart of white rice that it came with, so I would highly recommend making more carbs to put the curry on for a leftover meal! Even with our appetites, tt was easily a dish we could split into multiple meals. And to top off everything, we ordered 2 Thai Ice Teas, which amazingly came in nice mason jars! I was expecting the usual plastic cup with a lid on it, but nope, Pho Thai Lao goes above and beyond and serves their takeout Thai Ice Tea in mason jars! And, YES, the Thai Ice Tea was freaking goooooood and so worth it. Overall, we loveddddd...let me reiterate, loveeeeeddd the Massaman Curry. It was super flavorful, but the Pad See Ew, Lad Nah and Pho Soup weren't our cup of tea. They weren't bad and some might prefer them over the more traditional flavors they have tasted at Thai or Viet restaurants, but it wasn't for us. STILL, Pho Thai Lao were a solid 3.5 stars on those dishes alone and, on top of it, the employees were super friendly when I dropped in for pickup. I always stress kindness and friendly customer service and they displayed it while I was there. I DEFINITELY will be back to try the Lao-style entrees! read more

If you are looking for a true hole in the wall experience, then you should visit. Pho Thai Laos. The owners are offering a cuisine that is a mix of Thai and Laotian . Everything is made from scratch. The owners have been there for 20 years. While the decor is outdated the food is outstanding. Last night we started with Edamame and Vegetable Dumplings. The dumplings were steamed, moist and delicious with their variations of soy sauce.As you can see by the menu board they had a number of specials. We had the shrimp avocado curry and the salmon green curry. The rice was cooked to perfection. The restaurant is located by the old Maywood train station which makes the area very quaint. Parking is ample along the side of the building or the back. If you are looking for a variation of Thai food at a restaurant off the beaten track then I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

We've enjoyed the food from this restaurant for several years. They are accurate on the spice recommendations. Unfortunately tonight there was a mixup with my order that was take out. I can not eat anything with spice and my fried rice was a level one. The noodle dish sadly had none. I called the restaurant and let them know about the mix up and they were very kind and remade the order and delivered it. It's because of the customer service that I believe this restaurant deserves five stars. If you have read my past reviews of other restaurants, I'm not that generous. Tonight was the exception and the review deserves it. This is a small family restaurant I'm glad survived Covid and hope it lasts for a long time. We went on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The restaurant inside is very simple and cozy. The waitress was helpful with recommending what should be our introduction to Laos cuisine. I had the Tom Kha Gai Lao style and it definitely hit the spot for me on a rainy day. My bf had Tom yum pho which had a perfectly balanced taste of sour and spicy- not too spicy- big portion. WOW. If spicy is what you want, this is the place you need. There are 5 spice levels with 5 being the spiciest, and it's no joke. I ordered delivery through Door Dash. The restaurant plastic wrapped each container to prevent any spills. I really appreciated this. Asian food can be saucy and leak sometimes. I ordered the fried shrimp rolls, papaya salad (level 5 spice), and shrimp drunken noodles (level 3 spice). It came with a side of sticky rice. The papaya salad was so spicy but I enjoyed it. Level 5 will be too spicy for many. But the spicy papaya salad with the sticky rice was just delicious to me. A bite of the fried shrimp roll with the sweet dipping sauce cooled down the heat in my mouth. The noodles were chewy and bouncy, while the shrimp were plump. Even as the Uber Eats algorithm occasionally offered geographically improbable choices in East Orange and Fort Lee, I never expected Maywood would be on the radar and I'm not even sure why I typed Lao into the search bar. But after a few attempts with no couriers available for the long haul to JC I lucked out. In the old days I had the chance to visit this brilliant place twice. The delivery menu is shorter, as the format isn't as conducive to the varying spice levels and warning/promise about picking a number too high on the 1-5 scale. But even without the fermented ribs there's plenty to choose from. Instead of getting Thai items that you can find elsewhere, try the unique Lao fare. Today from the Lao Mains section I got the Som Tum Poo. It's a tangy, funky show-stopper; proceed cautiously. No point in paraphrasing: "Shredded green papaya with hard shell crab anchovy sauce, tomatoes, lime, garlic, chili peppers, and special Lao sauce." More mainstream yet also enjoyable was the Koong Ka Bork, shrimp wraps accompanied by a zingy sauce. On my first visits I looked to Yelp popularity stats to guide me. The Lao crepe is still in first place; it's a bit of safe pick. Pho Thai Lao Kitchen is to be commended for being able to serve multiple audiences and my personal preference would be skipping the crepe in favor of something wilder. However, the Pad Thai audiences and the anchovy oil enthusiasts can put aside their differences at dessert and try the outstanding coconut-laden Khanom Khrok. read more

We split a lao crepe (my favorite item on the menu and I'm still craving it), i ordered a frog leg dish in garlic sauce maybe that I don't remember the name of, she ordered red curry with rice, and we also split mango sticky rice for dessert. You could tell the food was fresh based on the wait and the taste and when they say something is spicy, they mean it! The key here is that the family still cooks all the food, and it comes out as it's ready but it's so flavorful and cooked with love! We were looking for an interesting restaurant to try on our way to visit friends in the Paramus-area, when I discovered Pho Thai Lao Kitchen. We love Thai food, and I was interested to experience their Lao-inspired dishes as well. The small restaurant was in a little strip next to a few other shops, but thankfully offered a parking lot to the side and rear of the place. As we entered, we overheard a table with 2 older couples simply raving about how great their food was. That was a very positive sign and made me more excited to kick off my meal. We were told to grab any table, so we plopped down in the first empty booth and perused the menu, which offered both Thai and Lao specialties. We decided to start by sharing Vegetable Curry Puffs, an appetizer we are used to having with chicken. The plate included 3 large, fried dumplings. The crunchy and flaky pastry crust was not very oily, and the inside included a mushy blend of veggies and potatoes infused with a sweet curry sauce. They were delicious! In addition, curry puffs are often served with an acidic vinegar dipping sauce, while these were accompanied by a bright red and overly sweet liquid that I preferred to avoid. For my main course, I selected the Chicken Pumpkin Curry special. The massive, deep bowl that I was presented with included a Thai curry paste, coconut milk, sliced chicken, pumpkin, mixed vegetables (broccoli, zucchini, string beans, cabbage, carrots), basil leaves, and lime leaves. Interestingly enough, the fragrant curry was more tangy than it was spicy or sweet. (Granted, I had asked for level 1 spiciness...) It was really a great dish, though I would say that the included cabbage tasted a bit strong. The meal thankfully came with a large mound of jasmine rice, which was essential for capturing the abundance of sauce. My companion ordered the Chicken Larb, dialing up the spice to a level of 3 out of 5. The Lao salad included iceberg lettuce and cabbage topped with minced meat, a homemade Lao sauce, lime, rice powder, galangal, and a mix of scallion and cilantro. The meat was spicy and flavorful. He loved it! The dish also came with sticky rice, which he tends to prefer more than jasmine anyway. The casual, family-run restaurant served up a welcoming environment and authentic cuisine. I was also impressed by the fact that they made their own hot sauce, which included fresh Thai chili, garlic, ginger, and lime. After reading reviews I decided to give this place a try. I wish I hadn't. We saw a roach walking on the ledge near the wall at our table. I definitely didn't want to eat after that. Before that happened I tried the spring rolls which were bland but the seasoning sauce on the table was good. The lard nah had good broth but tofu I got in it wasn't cooked or seasoned at all. The lychee juice and iced coffee were good. I'm sure many restaurants have bugs but I don't plan to go back. There were flags on the inside of the fluorescent lights....I wondered if that was why and I guess it is. Yuck. read more

You are greeted and treated like family here! Authentic dishes cooked up fresh to order. I would however increase the spiciness but realize most people would not want that level of heat. They even have their own homemade hot sauce on sale for $12. It is flavorful & hot! read more
