I was walking out of North Star and noticed a new pho place across the street. So, I had definitely had to try it. When I first walked in, this place reminded of the traditional Viet Pho place that I found in Houston and Atlanta. Childhood memories just flooded back to me. :) As I sat down, the waiter brought out some waters and menus. Prompt service and I was grateful for that. I reviewed the menu and I was shocked to find Thai, Viet, and Chinese all on one menu. THAT should of been my first sign. Also, majority of the Viet food was not in Vietnamese, sign #2 that this was going to be bad. We started off by order the "Autumn Roll" which I've never heard of before. Basically its Goi Cuon Thit Ga Nuong (fresh spring rolls with grilled chicken). When we got it, the rolls were unusually large and it was served with the peanut sauce. The peanut sauce was outstanding but this type of goi cuon is normally served with nuoc mam ngot (sweet fish sauce). Secondly, the "pickled" carrots in it were HUGE and it was odd. Lastly, the grilled chicken tasted like frozen chicken. I was really disappointed. My hubby order Pho Tai and he couldn't really eat it. It had an overpowering taste of charred ginger and too much sugar (probably rock sugar). I can eat anything so we ended up trading since mine tasted slightly better. I ordered the Bun Nem Nuong and Cha Goi (noodles with meatballs and egg roll). The noodles were tasty, the fish sauce was good, but the meat just tasted odd. I don't even know how to explain it. It just didn't taste fresh or good quality meat. We were done eating and went to the register to pay. I'm not sure if it was the owner or not, but she was on the phone and didn't even acknowledge us. I'm Vietnamese and can speak Vietnamese fluently so I understood everything that she as saying. 1) when you have a guest in front of you, at least acknowledge them. She literally took my card, gave me the receipt and just went on her merry way. I was super annoyed. Also, btw, she kept talking to her friend about shopping this weekend instead of paying attention to her guest. Been here 1/2 dozen time now, fantastic pho, almost at as good as those you get in CA. The tendon meat ball is awesome, tendon also good, it's only the raw beef on the slightly tougher side because it's a little bit thicker cut. That just might be localized demand/favorite. The food was good, I would say 7 out of 10. I tried the meat of #36, Grilled Short Rib, and it was kind of rubbery on the sides but other than that the meat was tender. The flavor of the meat was delicious, it had a hint of bbq flavor. I ordered Hu Tieu, #32, and it was savory. I just wish there was more shrimp, and wonton. The low mein was pretty delicious, I liked it the most out of the ones my family ordered. Thai tea was good too, 3/5. The atmosphere was friendly, well the servers were friendly. I was happy that Pho Thien An was open the night I came here with some friends. Coming from the opposite side of the building (Slackers) and playing games left me with a rumbling tummy. I did notice that like Pho Cong Ly, they also served Chinese food; however, I was craving some spring rolls and grilled pork. We threw down on the spring rolls (which were pork) and it was okay. I still eat these when I come here but I prefer the ones at Pho Cong Ly. I think it was because of the bite - it wasn't AS crunchy as I would have preferred. But I threw some chili garlic sauce (MY FAVE) and some fish sauce and I was good. The rice and grilled pork dish that I ordered was missing the usual fried egg; however, in previous visits, they've since added that as well. The pork is well cooked and presents a lot of good flavor. Tender, and just enough pieces to keep you wanting more. The shredded pork was a little dry as well but the cha dum (Vietnamese meat loaf) was good. They also serve Thai ice tea and it's absolutely delicious here! read more

Pho Thien An is seriously the best Vietnamese restaurant in San Antonio. It's in a rather unassuming place, right behind North Star Mall, located in a strip shopping mall. I really like the Banh Mi here. I know my Banh Mi, having toured Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi. The sandwich here is served on a crusty french roll, with fresh veggies, cilantro and a bit of meat. Very authentic. It comes with a bowl of pho broth which is always delicious! The service here is great. The waitress always checks up on my pronunciation of the Vietnamese terms with the owner, and knows her way around Vietnamese food better than Ho Chi Minh himself. I'm somewhat puzzled by some of the decor. It's a Vietnamese restaurant, and they have all this Japanese artwork. The place is clean, well lit, and parking is easy. I came here for lunch shortly after they opened at 11am. As with all pho places, I was hoping to smell the wonderful aromas of pho. Alas, I did not. Therefore, I decided against ordering pho. Instead I ordered the spring rolls based on other Yelpers' rave reviews and "Com Tam Thiên Ân: Broken rice w/ grilled pork chop, shrimp cake, sausage, shredded pork skin, soup & salad" I was not given any utensils with my spring rolls. But I didn't fret because there were soup spoons & disposable chopsticks available on the table. Therefore I used those & tried the spring roll. It was decent. Not great but better than some I've had in SA. I wish it came with herbs and green/red leaf lettuce instead of iceberg. But I'm learning that SA restaurants love serving iceberg lettuce :\ On to my entree... The Com Tam Thiên Ân plate that was presented to me looked pretty enough...upon my 1st quick glance. With my entree, I was given a bowl of soup in addition to a fork and knife that were wrapped in a paper napkin. The soup turned out to be their pho broth. It was on the salty side but decent. I poked at the meats I was given with my chopstick and noticed that they all had a hard crust. I poked at my mound of rice. That too was like cement. It was then that I realized my meal had been cooked who knows when and had been microwaved for my dining DISpleasure. BUT, I was hungry and decided to unwrap my utensils and try my meal anyways. "Maybe the flavors are good and I can forgive them", I thought. That was when I noticed that my fork had NOT been washed! I was given a super dirty, crusty fork. (See my pic in the Tip section). I showed the waiter my fork. He apologized and offered me a new fork. But I had already lost my appetite. I completely questioned the sanitary conditions of the kitchen and just wanted to leave. Pho Thien An is a brand spankin' new Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant located behind North Star Mall. After glancing at the menu, I was going to go with the usual: the sweet and sour chicken lunch special, which included an egg roll, rice and soup. However, after asking the waiter what his favorite chicken Chinese meal was, he pointed me toward a Vietnamese pork dish. Not exactly what I was thinking, but he said it was his favorite. Allrighty then, I'll give it a try. And that is how I found myself eating my first Vietnamese dish. It was described as broken steamed rice with shredded pork, shrimp cake and Chinese sausage. Not exactly the ever-reliable chicken. What can I say? It was an adventurous day. The pork was good, although not necessarily better than something I could cook at home, but the shrimp cake and sausage were definitely a more interesting. The sausage was super crispy and had a bit of an odd flavor. My favorite was the shrimp cake, which was a compact little box of shrimp that had been fried until its shell was nice and crispy. Their rice was good, and my waiter recommended that I put some chili sauce and fish sauce on it for the perfect amount of flavoring. I think I overadded the chili sauce, because at one point, my lips went numb. Aside from that, the rice was indeed better with some kick. Service was great, very friendly and quick. The interior was welcoming and calming, with greens and yellows and one of those virtual artwork things showing fish and shark swimming in the ocean. My order came to about $7, which isn't bad at all, considering all the food I got. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone who likes Vietnamese food. I'll probably go with the sweet and sour chicken next time, but if you are feeling adventurous, this is the place to go! read more

Stole a few slurps from my man's food, and wow my Vietnamese sandwich just did not compare. I REGRETTED ORDERING THE BAHN MI (still a good option) AND NOT THE PHO. If I had to describe the taste of their pho, maybe I can say garlic-y? I have no idea, but come here and try their amazing pho! The staff here were nice to us. The flavor was there, but eliminate the cornstarch for a thicker sauce and go light, as with most Vietnamese dishes....and you would have a winning dish!!!. The Pho lived up to the aroma that filled the restaurant. It was pricier than most places at $9.99 for a large but it fed 2 people, so I guess it's like a 2 for 1. One thing I couldn't get over was the green onions that were not diced. No one wants to bite into a huge piece of onion. I just removed them from my soup and slurped on. It was super flavorful! I really liked that there were a ton of vegetables in it- carrots, zucchini, green beans, and broccoli. The dish was very colorful and made it stand out. Having been to most Vietnamese restaurants in San Antonio, this is always our first choice. The true test of any ethnic restaurant is how many people being served are of that ethnicity. I would say that on every occasion we have been here, about 50% of the clientele are Vietnamese. What does this tell you? Yep, pretty good stuff. The service is so so, the ambiance is so so, and the food is so so. The pork (suong nuong) was a little dry and thin for my liking. The star of the dish was the egg roll. It was extremely crispy and hit the spot in all the right ways! My mom, kid and I came in on a Friday night right about 7 pm. There seemed to be only one real waiter, but there were several other people helping. Its a small space, but you could see the look of hunger and impatience on several of the diners faces. The kid had the kids bowl (the only "kid" item), the mom had the #33 I believe was shrimp and pork chop with salad and white rice. I had the #31 (I believe) which was soup with a ton of veggies, shrimp, soft wontons, pork and quail eggs served with an additional plate of fresh uncooked sprouts, Thai basil, jalapenos. I'm sure I'm missing something there, but it was like 30 minutes in dining heaven. Everything was so fresh and delicious, we will definitely be back to try some other items off of their elaborate menu. The best places come in small packages. Never judge a book by its cover. Very convenient location if you're shopping at north star mall and don't want to eat at the food court. The pho is moderately priced ($9 for a large bowl and $8 for a reg bowl). They also have bubble tea on the menu. I ordered a kids bowl of beef pho and my friend ordered the large bowl of beef pho. We agreed that it was delicious and we would definitely go back. They were generous with their portions of beef, which is probably why their prices were on the higher end for a bowl of soup. The broth was tasty even before adding vegetable garnishes. I would definitely come back. I also ordered a cup of Vietnamese iced coffee. I thought it tastes too strong and asked for more condensed milk, then the proportions were off and it had too much condensed milk... If you take a look at the menu, the vegetarian section specifies that it's cooked in like a chicken sauce. So I got the tofu Banh Mi. It's fine. Just fine. I was a little underwhelmed. It's not done in a crispy baguette like I'm used to, but more like a bolillo roll, so the whole sandwich goes pretty soft pretty quickly. The flavor is good and they gave me plenty of jalapenos for a kick. My order came with what I guessed were deep fried sweet potato slices. They were pretty good. Overall it was a lot of food that I almost finished. Not enough left overs to get a to go box, but there was no way I was going to finish my plate and feel happy. This is the worst Viet restaurant I've ever experienced in SA and as a Vietnamese person, I was offended. I ordered the bun bo hue, and it wasn't even close to a classic bun bo hue. It's like they used their sink water tasting pho broth and dumped sriracha in it, and called it a day. In addition the meats in the bun bo hue were completely wrong and looked like chewed up dog food. For a pho place with such a pretty name, this was so misleading! I'll give them one thing though, they're pretty good at scamming those who aren't familiar with authentic Viet food serving this disgustingness. Prices are very reasonable and the menu selection is fantastic. I'm half Vietnamese and consider Houston to have the best Vietnamese in the country however when making a visit to San Antonio and the need for a good bowl of pho arises, come visit Jimmy at Pho Thien An. I also like that the music played is Vietnamese and it's a family run operation. What I don't like is the television that competes with the music; It's very distracting. My boyfriend comes down from NYC once a month and insists on a visit here for great food and casual atmosphere with prompt service. read more
