First of all, the servers are very friendly! And they have very good Pho and Bun Bo Hue. My Vietnamese friends actually say they have the best Bun Bo Hue in town! So I trust them! :) The noodle bowls also are available in two portions which are great. But I feel like the regular size is already pretty big and definitely worth your money! The fried crab Rangoon was alright. It was fried crispy and the cream cheese was creamy. The Rangoon's sauce wasn't thick but super runny like water. The biggest factor in rating Vietnamese restaurants in San Antonio is the quality of its Pho Dac Biet (the House Bowl). They really load the ingredients on. The cuts of meat and noodles are very generous, and they set you up with a big plate of steamed bean sprouts and basil leaves. A regular bowl was too much for me to finish, and I would say it compared to a large size in most other restaurants. The broth, however, is not aromatic and rich enough. It's it the trickiest part to master, and what really determines the overall rating of a bowl of pho. It's not at all bland or wrong, just not strong enough compared to the authentic bowl. Therefore, I'd solely rate the pho a 3.5. On the much better side of San Antonio pho, but not quite reaching my expectations. The establishment itself is clean, and the service is excellent. Our server, although non-Vietnamese, knew the details of every dish and even understood when a traditional sauce was requested (mam ruoc). 5/5 Conclusion: The pho is generous in ingredients but lackjng in fullness of flavor. By San Antonio standards, it's probably as close to decent as you'll get. The overall experience was satisfactory. I'll have to come back and try other dishes. read more

We ordered the spring rolls as an appetizer. It was great, crunchy, perfect seasoning and the sauces that came with it completed the perfect appetizer. For our entrees we ordered the brisket pho and sesame chicken. Both of the entrees were great but the pho was the star dish. The sesame chicken was sweet and crunchy. I enjoyed the egg drop soup that came with it. The red chili sauce that is on the table is great and we put some inside of the pho. I've been going around San Antonio trying every place that has pho. I go to Pho Thien An the most. I probably come here once a week. (Being single has its perks.) The broth here is probably my favourite. I always get combination pho without meatballs. (I don't like the texture of meatballs in general, so...just no!) But the pho is always amazing! I mean if I'm going almost weekly, I'd have to say - yeah! They're my favorite pho place so far. I also really enjoy their Vietnamese spring rolls. Omg. Yum! Their tea is fresh too. I stopped by for a late lunch with a friend. It was pretty quiet, but it took a while to get the food to us. I'm assuming the wait was because we came during an odd time, around 3pm. I ordered a rice plate with stir fried veggies. It tasted really good, even though I was originally picturing more of a traditional plate (egg, quiche, etc.) with veggies. However, I liked how you could customize your order with meat selection and veggies versus salad. The pork was good, flavorful but not burnt. Did not come bone-in, but instead was cut up for you. They also give you the better quality rice. Prices were average to high, about $7-10 for a plate or pho bowl. If definitely go back to try some other menu items. Their selection was extensive with sandwiches, vermicelli bowls, different boba drinks, etc. Parking lot is small so I think it gets busy during lunch time. One complaint was a giant fly that kept coming back for attention. And, no one came back to check for refills, etc. I really don't expect that in most Asian restaurants, but for those of you that want better service, come prepared for the typical Asian restaurant experience. :) read more

Came to this place based on the good reviews. Looking for some authentic vietnamese food since my true vietnamese mother was joining me for dinner. Traveling from San Diego California this place was mediocre at best. I had the Bun Thit Nuong (vermicelli rice noodles with egg rolls and grilled pork) the egg rolls were American egg wrapped not the thin rice paper usually used. The fish sauce that came with my order was salty and did not have a bit of red chili in it at all. We also ordered fresh spring rolls. They were filled with rice noodles, regular lettuce, huge cucumber slices, and hardly any meat. Not to mention the "peanut sauce" was not peanut sauce at all but some form of a brown maybe teriyaki sauce... not good! The fried spring rolls weren't as I thought they'd be and were overly greasy. The noodles were extremely sticky and much too thick. The pork was just ok. We happened to spot this place from the mall and looked up the reviews. I'm so glad we did because the food was amazing! We're from Hawaii, and super picky about Asian food restaurants. My family, who happened to be visiting from Hawaii, tried the food and agreed it was legit! The portions are also huge! It was easy to share bun, chicken fried rice, beef fried rice, and shrimp friend rice with 9 people. We also get the fried rice to start with because we've been so disappointed with Asian food while living in West Texas. Now we have a spot to go to each time we travel to San Antonio. I think some may be thrown off by the older tables and booths in the restaurant, but it is clean and the service is great. Who needs a fancy restaurant that sells crap food (I'm looking at you West Texas), when you can have legit, Vietnamese and Chinese food in a shopping mall restaurant. read more

Occasionally we order off the menu, something like the Pad Thai or the Spring Rolls. Actually we ALWAYS order the Spring Rolls.... For me, it's a given to order the Vietnamese soup delicacy that is Phó. So yeah. That's the best way I know how to explain it. Chicken Phó, that's where it's at. To be honest, now that I'm writing this, I've only tried the chicken Phó, the Pad Thai and the Spring Rolls. I need to try other stuff but you can't go wrong with either of those three items. Unfortunately this place is under new management and it's not been a change for the better. They've slowly been changing things. The spring rolls are smaller and in a different wrapper, not as good. The pho is hit or miss now, sometimes it's really bland, but we were still supporting them and driving across town to do so. We own a small business and love to support! Unfortunately the final straw was being served bad chicken and when we said "hey this chicken is really weird, we do not want the meal" they just argued with us and said we didn't know what chicken was supposed to look like. I have traveled throughout Vietnam, and I still haven't been able to find a bún like this one. THE BEEF LEMONGRASS BÚN WITH SPRING ROLLS. They are NOT stingy!!! This mean will leave you perfectly satisfied and full but not heavy and groggy. Sure, the service kind of sucks, but people know this, and it doesn't deter them from going back. Solid spring rolls, passable pho - a little too sweet and salty, lacking beefiness. The fried spring rolls are delicious, fried to a crisp chewiness on the outside, and are large and meaty. The portion is large enough that I could get full just eating these. Comes with a nice dipping sauce on the side. The pho is okay. The broth is nice and clear but the taste is dominated by sweetness from rock sugar and savoriness from fish sauce. I don't taste a clean bass note of beefiness. It's also heavier on the star anise and spices than beef. The beef pieces were okay - the sliced steak was thin enough, the tendon was tender, the meatballs were cut into somewhat strange shapes, and the brisket didn't quite feel like brisket - firmer and not as tender / full of connective tissue as I'm used to. It came with a good amount of thai basil and they gave cabbage because they were out of bean sprouts which is okay. Plenty of jalapeno slices but the lime wedges were extremely dry and there was virtually no juice in them. read more

I ordered the spring rolls and house Pho. The spring rolls were good but the pho on the other hand was below par. This lacked the normal flavors and fragrances I'm use to. It had a very beefy smell to it and the broth was just slightly salty, it seemed very watered down. I don't think I would return for the pho but their drinks were pretty good though. I ordered their coconut water and Vietnamese ice coffee with boba and the ice coffee was very good. Service was very good as well, the servers were very attentive. They would come around every 5-10 minutes to check up on me. One of the negative things about these restaurants is that they won't clear the dirty dishes but they'll continuously bring more dishes. I find that very strange to allow your customers to eat with a table full of dirty dishes. read more

I was walking out of North Star and noticed a new pho place across the street. So, I had definitely had to try it. When I first walked in, this place reminded of the traditional Viet Pho place that I found in Houston and Atlanta. Childhood memories just flooded back to me. :) As I sat down, the waiter brought out some waters and menus. Prompt service and I was grateful for that. I reviewed the menu and I was shocked to find Thai, Viet, and Chinese all on one menu. THAT should of been my first sign. Also, majority of the Viet food was not in Vietnamese, sign #2 that this was going to be bad. We started off by order the "Autumn Roll" which I've never heard of before. Basically its Goi Cuon Thit Ga Nuong (fresh spring rolls with grilled chicken). When we got it, the rolls were unusually large and it was served with the peanut sauce. The peanut sauce was outstanding but this type of goi cuon is normally served with nuoc mam ngot (sweet fish sauce). Secondly, the "pickled" carrots in it were HUGE and it was odd. Lastly, the grilled chicken tasted like frozen chicken. I was really disappointed. My hubby order Pho Tai and he couldn't really eat it. It had an overpowering taste of charred ginger and too much sugar (probably rock sugar). I can eat anything so we ended up trading since mine tasted slightly better. I ordered the Bun Nem Nuong and Cha Goi (noodles with meatballs and egg roll). The noodles were tasty, the fish sauce was good, but the meat just tasted odd. I don't even know how to explain it. It just didn't taste fresh or good quality meat. We were done eating and went to the register to pay. I'm not sure if it was the owner or not, but she was on the phone and didn't even acknowledge us. I'm Vietnamese and can speak Vietnamese fluently so I understood everything that she as saying. 1) when you have a guest in front of you, at least acknowledge them. She literally took my card, gave me the receipt and just went on her merry way. I was super annoyed. Also, btw, she kept talking to her friend about shopping this weekend instead of paying attention to her guest. Been here 1/2 dozen time now, fantastic pho, almost at as good as those you get in CA. The tendon meat ball is awesome, tendon also good, it's only the raw beef on the slightly tougher side because it's a little bit thicker cut. That just might be localized demand/favorite.
