The Manoa Marketplace has a pho restaurant? Pho-sho! Buwahahahahaha! Seriously, if ya look upstairs from da pizza joint (J&B pizza), you will find a Vietnamese restaurant called - Pho Viet Thien Hong. What can I say about this restaurant? As I walked into the establishment I was taken back at the large restaurant space that this restaurant occupied. The restaurant is decorated beautifully, had a large bar, and the a/c really worked good (perfect on a hot summer day)! :D We were greeted right away, and were told that we could sit wherever we wanted. Menus and water were dropped off shortly to our table, & upon looking over Pho Viet Thien Hong's extensive menu (see menu pics), I decided to get a BBQ Chicken Sandwich (because I wasn't too hungry). My friend decided to get a Cold Noodle dish with Spring Rolls & BBQ Pork. What can I say about the grub? Good thing I came here kinda full, because for ($9.75) for that BBQ Chicken Sandwich, it wasn't worth it at all. Overall, there wasn't much filling (meat or vegetables), and the French bread used to make the sandwich was soggy. As for the Cold Noodle dish with BBQ Pork & Spring Rolls? My friend totally enjoyed it, as she used to come here all the time for this particular dish. I guess when coming here, it's all about picking the right dish, as it's quite obvious that I failed here! Lol! The only peeve I have about this restaurant was the Covid-19 protocols............ Remember that I mentioned to you folks about how spacious the restaurant was???? Well, while my friend & I were eating, a large party of (11) people walked into the restaurant, and of course with all the space the restaurant had, the large party had to sit smack right next to us. Since moving to Manoa recently, I've been looking for a Vietnamese place nearby. The ambiance is nice, not too loud and table spacing allows privacy. I've tried their seafood pho twice, which had good broth but smaller portion. Their lemongrass chicken and spring rolls add tasty. I love their large boba drink selection and they also offer karaoke for group fee. The menu is simple. Only suggestion is more seafood selection and bigger pho portions. I'll keep going here as it's only a few minutes from my place. read more

Ordered from Uber eats and put in notes if they could make sure our phos were gluten free. I've ordered on Uber eats before and if a restaurant cannot fulfill a request, they have the ability to cancel the order from the restaurants end. Today, this owner decided to be greedy and tell us they cannot do that and that we would have to cancel order from Uber eats. When we spoke to a rep at Uber eats, they said the merchant could cancel otherwise our cancellation would not be with a full refund. Most phos are naturally gluten free made with rice noodles but this owner said his had soy sauce. That's fine if that is your recipe, however if you couldn't guarantee it couldn't be gluten free, you should have cancelled the order for your customer, and not put them in the middle and try to make them pay for food they could not eat. Located on 2nd floor by the elevators, above the pizza place, is this Vietnamese gem. I really like this place. Their summer rolls come with 3 small rolls (I'm used to 2 long rolls) and their sauce is so good. The vermicelli dishes are great too and they even have a lot of Chinese type stir fry dishes. I love Vietnamese food. There is enough variety for me to eat it breakfast, lunch and dinner. Between the soups, the noodles, sandwiches and the broken rice, it totally excites my palate. I haven't explored Vietnamese cuisine as much as I would like on Oahu, but I have found a few places that are close to my heart, and one of them is Pho Viet Thien Hong. This place definitely meets my needs....and in a good way, feels like home. Located upstairs in Manoa Marketplace, above the pizza place and the crepe place, you can either take the stairs or the elevator; it's easy access. Finding a parking space is usually not a problem since the marketplace has ample parking. Once you are upstairs it is hard to miss the restaurant, since there is a big banner sign as well as a sign neon begging you to come in. The restaurant itself is actually quite large inside. There is an upstairs office space, a bar, and quite a few tables to choose from...and the high ceilings give the restaurant an airy, open feel. Because we are in the middle of a pandemic, steps have been taken to socially distance patrons, and frequent wipe downs are evident before and after customers. As long as I have been coming in I have only had one waitress, who I think is also the owner. She is always helpful, courteous, and always wears a smile. Humble and anxious to please, I have always had wonderful service here...which is hard to say about a lot of restaurants. There are times when I am in a hurry, and this restaurant is perfect because the food comes out fairly quick. But there are other times where I have to work through lunch. Pho Viet Thien Hong is also perfect for this. I eat, work, and the waitress is always quick to make sure my water is full and that my needs are taken care of. The food is very good here. Everyone I bring here orders something different, and returns to eat. For me it's the pho tai. Rare steak noodle soup is really my test for a Vietnamese restaurant...my 'control dish', if you will. It lets me know what the broth tastes like....which is very important to me. And this broth might be my favorite on the island! With amazing depth of flavor, and a touch of sweetness, the broth is delicious to the last sip, and it definitely is one of the reasons I am addicted to this restaurant. After being turned down at another dining establishment given insufficient space for our large stroller, we were pleasantly surprised with the large dining room and ample seating at this restaurant. The menu is vast and contains your typical Vietnamese fare including spring rolls, pho, cold vermicelli, and rice plates. They also have interesting options such as stir-fried udon and more! I decided to go with the Spring Roll and Grilled Pork Vermicelli (#31) as it was a warm day. Though a little less meat than I was expecting, the dish was flavorful and one of the better cold vermicelli I've had on the island. My in-laws enjoyed their seafood pho (good broth) and Beef Cold Vermicelli dishes as well. The one complaint was it did seem a bit warm in the restaurant when you are trying to enjoy a bowl of hot soup! Would come again if I'm in the area. read more

Kiddo and I really like their beef meatballs, which are smooth and dense and tasty, and don't have tendons or fat like some other restaurants. It's a shame their meatballs are cut in half though, and I wish they'd give more! I wonder if they'll sell meatballs only. Anyway I usually order the Large bowl for the kiddo (for a couple more meatballs) and ask for less noodles. He doesn't like the basil, mint, or sprouts so we usually return those. Their broth is a little on the sweeter side, which suits us just fine. My go-to dish is the lemongrass chicken plate. This past visit I tried the lemongrass vermicelli instead. Both are really good, although I think with the vermicelli there's an added layer of flavor from the pickled daikon and carrots and tossed salad under the noodles. Other items we've tried include spring rolls, chicken porridge, seafood noodles, and chicken curry. The spring rolls come with lettuce for rolling. But at $8.95 for 3 small-ish rolls cut in halves, it's a little underwhelming. We've also had their chicken porridge, which is really fine and smooth, and surprisingly tasty! Would have been better with more chicken. One other dish that I tried on the recommendation of a Singaporean friend and that I enjoyed is the dry seafood noodle. It's as close to mee pok (for those who grew up in Singapore) as I could find. To be fair, I never was a mee pok fan growing up so my standard may not be the best!! I wasn't impressed with their chicken curry; the one time I've had it, it tasted like it was frozen and reheated. We like the way their food tastes, even if portion sizes could do better, but I understand that their lease keeps going up and business is not as brisk as it used to be. What I really appreciate is they always recognize us when we come to eat, no matter how much time has passed. We've been coming since the kiddo was a toddler running amok on their little karaoke stage, and he's now almost 11! The brother and sister team would come by, make small talk with us, and comment how big he's grown. Back before I had a kid, I could just take a quick trip down to Chinatown to eat at any of the great hole-in-the wall pho places. But now that I have to think about things, like, will I have to wait with an impatient two-year-old? Is there parking nearby? Will a talkative toddler make a scene? So Pho Viet was a good suggestion. It's in the upper level of Manoa Marketplace. It's a HUGE space, which you would not expect just by seeing it on the outside. I think they even have extra private rooms, but of course we were seated in the main section, near bright windows. They were prepared for families with young kids! The server gave us a high chair and a kid's water with a lid & straw. AND a Minnie Mouse plate The pho was pretty standard, but they do have something I'd never seen called a "Winter roll," which is a spring roll (fried & crunchy) wrapped in a summer roll (mint & rice paper). Such a great idea!!! You get the yummy fried roll, but it's also easy to hold & dip. I loved them. I could have eaten a full plate of those. I was surprised that there is new ownership. I really liked the previous owner with their friendly greeting and mom and pop vibe. When you walk in the huge boba sign almost tells you this is not the same place as before. It feels more sterile and stiff. My cold vermicelli and spring rolls was good, my friends chicken sandwich was dry and over priced and the shrimp pho was not that big of a portion for $20. I think this restaurant is pretty authentic that includes their waitress being a little bit overly enthusiastic and made me feel creepy. The food was ok. Never have I seen a pho place with more than four pages of food items. The inside is MUCH bigger than it seems from the outside, with many tables, a bar, and even karaoke rooms upstairs?! I think it's safe to say that it's the nicest casual Vietnamese restaurant I've stepped into in Hawaii, with the nicest employees. I wasn't too hungry so I had just tried a few bites of my friend's Bun Cha Gio (Spring Rolls on Vermicelli, $11.95). The portion was very big, but the flavors weren't my favorite. I may have been a little bias, because we just came back from Vietnam so I'm probably still comparing the food here to the authentic foods we had in Vietnam, but I think the vermicelli noodles were a little overboiled for my taste (too soft) and the spring rolls didn't have much flavor. I did like that the vermicelli noodles also came with crushed peanuts, shredded carrots, and fried garlic on top, which gave the noodles a lot more flavor, especially if you're like me and don't like the sauces that they give you on the side. If you are looking for authentic Vietnamese food then look elsewhere. They seem to be catering to the locals. Their food is bland and below average. The cook needs to revisit Vietnam and relearn their cooking style. The basic Vietnamese dishes lacked the basic ingredients that makes the dish special. It just tastes watered down and leaves out critical ingredients. Perhaps if you never been to Vietnam you won't know the difference. Other hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurants in downtown chinatown is much closer to the authentic Vietnamese food and cheaper too. This place cost more and serves less portions or lack off. I would avoid this place This is NOT a "hidden gem". I just saw few customers drinking wind beverages at the bar and few gathered to talk it seems. Don't waste your hard earned money here. read more

Ok, disclaimer, I would normally 4 star this spot, but this downgrade is because of the lack of COVID preventions that I noticed during lunch. Yes, there are mask requirements, hand sanitizer available, and physical distancing. What was missing (and I only realized it half way through our meal) was there was no temperature check, there was no contact tracing (recording of name/address/phone number) in case of a breakout. I also noticed the condiments were still on the table. In every other sit down restaurant, the restaurants have no condiments on the table, but servers would happily bring you what ever you need in single serving sizes or in sealed condiment packets. Less surfaces available for customers to touch, less likely to miss a spot when disinfecting after customers leave. As I said above, this would normally be a 4 star joint for me, the food is good and the service is always friendly and attentive. During these strange times, I notice the nuances more. They really do have great lettuce cups and spring rolls, and Vietnamese coffee. read more

We came by for lunch on a Saturday morning around 11am. We were the only ones there. I ordered egg rolls, my wife got the bbq chicken Banh Mi, I ordered the lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl. The server offered me Vietnamese iced coffee which I accepted. I should have asked about the price because the small cup of coffee was $5. The vermicelli bowl was decent, not too bad. My wifes sandwich contained barely any vegetables. Normally there is some pickled daikon, carrots, and cilantro. This sandwich was pretty slim and mostly carrots and no cilantro. Total bill came out to just about $50 for lunch. There are several other food options in this plaza I am going to try next time. Not my favorite place. read more

The woman who worked there was very welcoming. Offered us to wait at the bar while we looked at the menu and ordered take out. Then when we were waiting for our order she brought my dad and I iced water. She went above and beyond for us even though we were only doing take out. When she brought the check, we didn't feel rushed at all. She included the traditional guava hard candies and some crunch bars she had. Brought it out with metal tongs so she wouldn't touch it. The food was packed very nicely and everything was individually wrapped in containers. She was generous with the sauces. We got four orders of pho and an order of summer rolls. Each came with a hot chili oil and a hoisin so we didn't have to fight over it all. Everything was packed in a box and it was easy to carry it to the car and straight home. Nothing was bloody and it all seemed very fresh. Broth was hot! The woman said we could only order large or extra large for the pho if we were doing take out. No complaints. Although I usually drop in for a quick bite, this time was a little different. With friends, a bottle of Dr. Loosen Riesling was a great pairing to the meal. The mussels were exceptional with the wine. Who would've thought peanuts match mussels? Their secret sauce really pulled the flavors together well. Along with a papaya salad, and of course the traditional pho, it was the perfect healthy lunchtime meal. The menu is quite extensive for a Vietnamese restaurant. They had large parties, including ours with 8 of us on a Wednesday celebrating our granddaughter's ninth birthday. They did their very best to keep things running smoothly. We've actually been here about 10 times before because my parents live in Manoa and it's very convenient & pho is perfect on a windy or cold day. It's not because of the food or service, which is actually pretty good and the prices on the menu are reasonable too. It's because of the strange billing system. Decor is pink and Christmas, and tv over the bar was showing two people having, uh...intimate relations. Kid on the next table didn't see. We actually ordered a lot of food for two people; one, because my husband was hungry, and two, we were getting a takeout order for my daughter. I wouldn't have even thought twice except I couldn't read the writing on the total, so I used my phone calculator to add up our bill. We were overcharged, while not by much, but it's difficult to reconcile that this might be a regular policy that no one is checking. But I'm so sad that a restaurant would do this. The owners are the nicest people I've ever met. It's a small family owned restaurant. She's so so sweet and attentive. Her husband helps bring out the food, but is mostly in the kitchen. I always love coming here to support them. They are located upstairs in manoa marketplace above le crepe cafe behind Safeway. COVID hit them hard and they were in talks of having to close down. I'm happy to see they are still going strong! They have an extensive menu and some unique items like fried noodles and udon. The back of the menu has the more non-traditional Vietnamese eats. The Thai tea is a must! Please come and help support them. The food is delicious :) parking is easy, but plan accordingly since the weekly farmers market makes the lot a little chaotic. read more
