I'm not in the neighborhood too often... but when I do find the time to come here, my trip itinerary always includes a visit to Phoenix. Situated on Broadway between College and Bernard Street. There's a small parking lot that fits like three cars (1 handicap spot), some street parking nearby, and paid parking lots around the area. I came when they had indoor capacity restrictions, so it was only a couple groups at a time and everyone else stood in a line outside. If this is your first time, you have to get a slice of their signature strawberry cake! It's a light sponge cake with a layer of fresh strawberries and whipped cream inside, which is topped with additional whipped cream, a slice of strawberry, and toasted almonds. The texture is soft and fluffy, and the fruits add a little refreshment with every bite. It's also not overly sweet, if you happen to finish more than one serving. Other items I usually get are wintermelon pastries, cream puffs, sesame balls, and steamed buns. Haven't ordered a full cake yet, but I'll consider it when the next special occasion comes. read more

**September 2021 Visit: Mask Mandate for Indoor Purchases** My friend introduced me to this iconic bakery and informed me that it's been a Chinatown staple for the past 80 or so years. Naturally I wanted to see what it was all about and of course sample their signature items! I've visited them on three occasions and on Saturdays they had a line 15-20 people deep; however on Sundays it was less busy. On my first visit my friend and I walked in and on my most recent visit there was 5 people or so waiting. They sell various cakes as well as individual Chinese baked goods. During my visit they had mooncakes; however, I was most interested in the Almond Cookies, which they sell by the dozen ($3.95 methinks) and double dozen ($6.95). I usually get box of the double dozen and it gets gobbled up before the end of the day. It's not too sweet, flaky, and has a nice loose texture. I enjoy them. I've been told that their strawberry cakes are really good so I may need to try that on my next visit! Pro Tip: Be sure to check in and they'll give you a free Almond cookie! read more

I remembered coming here 20 years ago as a child and I haven't been here since. I was visiting LA last week and I knew I had to stop here for some almond cookies. Can't believe that I had never tried this place before but I spotted a line outside so of course had to go check it out. It's really cute and very old-school. Love the vintage sign and they even have merch inside for sale with their logo. They're famous for their strawberry birthday cakes. And several people were buying the complete cakes. The cakes look absolutely amazing and come ready to go in several different flavors. You can also buy individual pieces of cake, cream puffs, various pastries and a few traditional Chinese style pastries. It was a day after the New Year parade so a lot was sold out, but tried a lovely fluffy mango yellow cake, a dense and flakey wintermelon Chinese style pastry and one of their red velvet cookies with white chocolate chips. The cookies are very sweet, but good. The cake is light and fluffy; definitely the speciality at this bakery. A must try if you have a sweet tooth and visit Chinatown. read more

Forgot to finish my review. Probably to give me time to cool down. The cashier sure has an uppidty attitude. You tell her you want a box of almond cookies. "Go get it yourself, it's over there on the counter" " i don't know which one you want." My head is thinking, lady , just give me a box. I went with my sister and i did not want to have the cashier wait on both of us, so when the next cashier was open, i wanted to have her help me. That cashier went with someone behind me. What? I was next. I didn't want that rude cashier to help me. No, the second cashier defer to the first cashier. Wow. Is there some sort of dictatorship with these cashiers? All i want is one box of cookies so i can go back to the expiring meter. Is that so much to ask? Came here about a month ago, a week before the Lunar New Year. There was a line outside, which we stood in for 15-20 minutes. They only allow a certain number of people inside, I think 4-5. It was sometime during the afternoon, so there weren't many options in the glass cases. They are known for strawberry cake, which is delicious. The strawberry cakes are definitely very good, but not sure if it was worth the hype and wait. BBQ buns were perfect though - rich, flavorful, sweet and umami all wrapped into a fluffy, warm bun. I also got a complimentary almond cookie from Yelp - that was super delicious too, with marzipan notes and that addictive, buttery combo of crispy and crumbly. The wait was a bit excruciating - a mix of both tough post-vaccination rules and the fact that they didn't hire enough employees per number of customers. Even though there were just 3 parties ahead of me, it took about 20 minutes to eventually get served. Best bakery in the area! My parents grew up in Chinatown and have been going to Phoenix Bakery since they were kids. That was 70 plus years ago. As a child, every birthday cake my siblings, cousins, and I got was a delicious strawberry cake from Phoenix Bakery. Great memories... Although I'm often in the area for work, I hadn't been to PB in at least 20 years. It's located in the heart of Chinatown. I stopped by the other day to pick up a 6" strawberry cake for a co-worker to celebrate her birthday. I arrived right when the doors opened so there was no wait and I easily secured a spot in the tiny parking lot (2 regular spaces and 1 handicap) attached to the bakery. The visit was incredibly nostalgic. I felt like a kid again! For the most part, everything was the same... the big sign outside, the layout of the bakery, many of the sweets and cakes, and the general decor. One employee, Rosa, was working the counter. She took my order, wrote on the cake, and rang me up. She was friendly and helpful. As for the cake, it was just as I remembered... just smaller (we used to get the big sheet cake). It was a well spent $20.00. I'll definitely have to remember PB for future cake purchases. read more

We were lucky to get the last slice of strawberry cake - the cream was so good not too sweet and very light and airy. They put a lot of strawberries which I appreciate especially since they are not in season right now. The sponge cake was moist and went really well with the strawberries and cream. I have been coming to this bakery ever since I was a child and though my opinion about this business has evolved over the years, Phoenix Bakery always promises to be what Phoenix Bakery is known for; a great place to get your bakery needs fulfilled. The specialty of Phoenix Bakery is birthday cakes and large cakes for other occasions, though they do, of course, offer smaller snack sized items. The one piece of advice I will offer here is that if you are planning to come in and buy a birthday cake, call ahead. I cannot tell you how many times I have been in this bakery when somebody has walked in expecting them to have the perfect birthday cake already prepared. Yes, they do have a number of large cakes ready to go and yes they are happy to put some wording on it in a flash but if you have a specific type of cake that you want, call ahead.
