Holy moly these portuguese egg tarts are delicious if not top 3 of my life (#1 are some from Portugal I tried and they sprinkled cinnamon on it - game changer). I called ahead to make a larger order and they said it would be ready in 30 minutes. You can't walk in but see the goods from the glass window and there's a paper sign with the menu. Credit Card is available for orders over $20. Their venmo wasn't working so I would suggest that, but they also take zelle. When we got the boxes there was steam coming out so we were knew they were extra fresh. We could wait to get home so we ate one in the car right away. These egg tarts will make you do the "mmmmm" sound out loud. Outer crust was buttery and flakey. The filling was eggier than I had before (which I liked) and not too sweet at all! I happened to be headed that way to get rice noodles and had to incorporate a stop here to check out their Egg Tarts. They are located in a small plaza. They still don't allow guests to go into the shop, so you look at the displays through the window and order at the door. They have a good variety of pastries and breads on display. I was there for the Egg Tarts, I asked which kind they offered and was told they only have the Portuguese variety, fine by me! I ordered a dozen. After window shopping, a couple of things caught my eye. I also ordered 3 of the Taro (Ube) bun, and a Pork Sung roll (since my nephew loves pork sung). There was a menu posted, but no pricing. I asked about the price of the tarts and was told $1.50 each (I think, hard to hear through the plastic), no clue about the other items. My order totaled $26.66 for everything. When I got home, I gave a tart to my dad and he loved it. So, I had to try one as well. It was still warm, flakey crust, creamy filling that was so good, not at all sweet, and very generous. I also tried the Taro (Ube) bun, it was a really generous taro filling encased in a thin flakey pastry shell, so filling! It was our first time trying this bakery today. During the pandemic, customers aren't allowed inside. A staff member takes your order at your door, and you just wait for them to bring you the goods. Everything was sealed in clear plastic bakery bags. We ordered a few buns and their Portuguese egg tarts to try. Everything was cheap. Personally, I think some buns weren't as good as those of 85's, but it's like a third to half the costs. Technically more of a 3.5/5 overall, but I rounded up for the sake of this review. Portuguese egg tarts: The skin appeared flaky, but it wasn't really flaky/crispy when I bit into it. The filling itself was pretty good. It wasn't too sweet, and had good flavors. For being only a little over $1 each, I think it's a steal, 4.5/5. Taro Biscuits: The skin was flaky and soft. The center had a generous amount of taro. The taro itself had a smooth texture and was lightly sweetened. I really enjoyed this pastry. I recommend this, if you like taro desserts, 5/5. Steamed taro bun: The bun was cold when I got it, but you can just microwave it for 30 seconds, and it's hot and soft again. The bun itself tasted like a normal mantou. There was lots of taro inside this bun, and it was lightly sweetened too. I think compared to frozen taro buns, this one was definitely better, but I probably wouldn't drive out of my way for just steamed buns, if I have frozen ones in my freezer already. Overall 5/5. Pork sung roll: Their bread was light and soft. From the outside, it looked like there would be a lot of pork sung, but sadly there was not much in the middle. It was mainly bread in the center, so personally the two ends tasted the best, and the middle was mediocre. This bun was 3/5 for me. Taro bun-I really love their bread at this bakery. It reminds me of the tan zhou bread, very soft. However, there was very little taro inside this bread. It was probably 95% bread, which is a little disappointing, considering their taro paste actually tastes very good. For this reason, this bun is 3/5 for me. Pineapple bun- Their bread was soft, like their other buns. The topping was too sweet for me, and it wasn't crispy. It was soft and bit soggy. Personally, I didn't enjoy this bun as much as 85's, but remember, their prices are much cheaper than said bakery. This bun was 3/5 for me because of the sweetness. Overall, their prices are great, if you want cheap soft buns. I didn't get to try everything I wanted to. They ran out of Napoleon at 11:30am, so I'll probably have to return another time to try it and maybe some new pastries. I likely wouldn't order their pork sung roll, baked taro bun, or pineapple bun again, but their tarts and taro biscuits are definitely a future repeat purchase for me. read more

So while I was out in Rosemead, I had to check out Phu's Bakery for their Portuguese Egg Tarts! There wasn't that may parking spots when I arrived and I was surprised to see that they blocked the door so that you can't actually walk in. I spoke to an employee inside to order 6 Portuguese Egg Tarts and they came out right away. I had to have an Egg Tart right outside and it was delicious. The Egg Tart has great texture with the bread outside and the soft egg in the middle. Definitely recommend this spot if you are craving a Portuguese Egg Tart! read more

Found Pho's Bakery on Yelp since my husband and I were looking to pick up some snacks and lunch for our drive back to Northern Cali. We ordered: - Portuguese egg tarts (x6): Yummy creamy, custard center with a crispy, flaky crust! We had no regrets buying extra for our road trip, and wish we had bought more! - Cha siu bao (baked, x4): Solid baked bread of the cha siu bao. Wished there was more filling to be proportionate with the amount of the bread exterior and less fillers like onion and fat (instead of meat). There were bites where there was no filling at all. - Cha siu bao (steamed, x2): Once again, a solid steamed bread exterior of the cha siu bao. There was a proportionate amount of filling to bread. Just wished there were less fillers (fat and onions) and more meat. - Taro bun (x1): Delicious bready exterior with a true taro filling that's not overly sweet! The taro filling is made with real taro and you can see some of the purple taro strands/fibers in the dense filling. They have their menu posted on the window, but we wished the posted the price as well. Our total was $20 and some cents for our order. I really wanted to like this place for their Portuguese egg tarts, but it just didn't make it for me. While the price and size of the egg tart was great, it just isn't portuguese egg tart. It has the look of a portuguese egg tart being that it is browned at the top of the egg custard, but that's just it - it tastes just like a regular egg tart. The pastry dough itself should be flaky-er like a croissant in my opinion (I'm comparing it to the Portuguese egg tarts I had in Macau). While it was warm and delicious, nonetheless it is just a regular egg tart to me. This Chinese Bakery has many pastries, breads, buns, and cakes, but their most known for their delicious Portuguese Egg Tarts! Large portion with a deliciously flaky crust and smooth egg custard, this is dangerously delicious. What impressed me is how the first stayed flaky even after 12+ hrs. Randomly found this hole in the wall bakery known for their $1 egg tarts! I havent seen any tarts that cost less than $1.60 a piece in this area so I had to come and find out. Though it's not the closest location from home, it's definitely worth the drive for these heavenly egg tarts. I walked into Phu's Bakery and immediately saw a small showcase with the yummy tarts. I really wanted to check if they were really a dollar a piece and it sure was. I got 6 egg tarts and the lady quickly placed them in a styrofoam container. Grabbed a couple of other pastries and walked out. Came home and took a bite, it was heavenly! I really really enjoyed every bite of these creamy egg tarts. I personally like the flaky tart shell and so it was perfectly fine for my taste. The filling was very soft, smooth and creamy, I highly doubt anyone can say no to this. I also loved that it wasnt on the sweeter side. I cant eat too much sweets so these were really perfect for me. I mean I knew after taking my first bite, I can eat unlimited count of these in one seating if I am given the chance. Just to clarify, they are definitely not the best egg tarts I have had but for the price, its the best and quality you can get in the area. We also got one pork sung roll that I ate for dinner because the wife was going over to a friends house and we had a buffet lunch so I wasn't thinking of eating a full meal. Since we live in Irvine prices for the same items are greater so it was nice to see egg tarts for 1.75 each. The egg tarts are decent here but not as good as paderias which are $3 each. Covid-19 takeout review. I picked up Portuguese egg tarts, vanilla sponge cake and lemon sponge cake. Portuguesse egg tart: not the best egg tart, but it's pretty good and light. I popped this in the microwave for 15 seconds and it came out all jiggly and creamy. I also picked up some tarts for my friend and her family. She texted me the next day to say they really enjoyed the yummy tarts. Pandan sponge cake: light, fluffy and not too sweet. I like eating it cold and warm-pop it in the microwave for 20 seconds. Vanilla sponge cake and lemon sponge cake: I gifted these cakes too and I got a call saying they liked the cakes. The lady who helped me was so sweet, friendly and patient. I came back again for more goodies since I couldn't get they were out of the birthday bun the first time I was there. Vegetable and pork bun: I was annoyed at first because I thought they just gave me vegetable bun. The filling was super tasty, but it was mostly vegetable with glass noodle and tiny pieces of pork. I would get this again. Taro biscuit: thin, flaky layers of "biscuit" on the outside with thick, generous amount of taro paste inside. It was goey and starchy at the same time. I love taro, but I don't care for this TBH. Walnut sponge cake: pretty basic and light like your typical walnut sponge cake. I would get this again. Birthday bun with lotus filling: I like the bun more than the filling. The service was efficient, but not as friendly as the first time. It's kinda hard ordering when you have to point from the outside and you don't really know the names. Don't show your frustration because I sure didn't show mine.
