My dear friend recommended me to Royal Bakery at Empire Commercial Center in Rosemead. Its store front faces Valley Blvd. Free parking on both sides of the center. Open Mondays through Saturdays. Closed on Sundays. Small bakery known for their jumbo pork buns. They also have an assortment of pastries with different fillings of red bean, mung bean, durian, taro, lotus, custard and more. Freshly made candies such as peanut candy, white sesame candy, and custard apple candy are available for purchase. The owner was very nice and provided amazing service. Thank you sir! He heated up one bun for me to try. It was very delicious. White bun was perfectly warm and pillowy soft with savory and flavorful pork filling. Half egg was a surprise and a nice add. I bought 8 more jumbo pork buns along with 1 box of peanut candy (very fresh and tasty). Price per bun was $3.25 which is very reasonable for its freshness and quality. As for the peanut candy, it was a little pricey at $15 per box. Good quality snacks are hard to come by nowadays. I would still buy them again. I was given a free sample of soft sesame candy. Teochow owned bakery nestled in a busy plaza in San Gabriel! Came here since we needed a variety of items for our Tea Ceremony/Wedding. They had everything ranging from Taro Buns, Lao Po Bings, Peanut Candies, and Dragon-Phoenix Candles. I especially liked their meat buns. They also had a bunch of misc wedding related items like double happiness stickers and nice decorative boxes for the Lao Po Bings. The owner was super nice and helpful on helping to get everything ordered and arranged. Ok to preorder but he prefers you come in person vs doing it over the phone. Usually at least a week ahead notice. Buns are usually fresh when they first open for the morning, or around 12 when a new batch of buns are made. Bakery is located on the side of the building facing the street so parking is limited to the street. I came in today and got a taro, red bean and custard bun. The owner was very nice and friendly. He offered me a sample of some peanut candy he had just made and I also bought a container of that too. I love supporting local businesses and it seems like he puts a lot of effort into his business and the food. Regarding the reviews complaining the buns are "stale," they are refrigerated prior to purchasing so it is required to heat them before consuming. Easiest way is wrapping the bun in a wet paper towel and microwaving for 30-35s if you do not have a microwave you can steam the bun for 7-8 minutes with a vegetable steamer or put a plate in a saucepan that has a shallow level of water on the bottom and put the buns on the plate and cover. Bought one durian and one custard bun to try but when we tried to bite into it, we could already feel that it was hard, dried, and old. We stumbled upon this little bakery after having lunch next door. I noticed the display case had rows of colorful baos on display, and that was enough to get my curiosity. Inside is small. There are no seats, have mostly packaged foods and whatever is inside the glass case. Our first time, we tried their taro, custard and mung bean baos. A quick heat-up under a wet paper towel in the microwave and they came out warm and soft with a sweet filling. Second visit, I got 4 custard, 2 taro and 2 red bean, and I'm sure these will be equally good like the first time. According to the owner, these will keep in the fridge for about 2 weeks or much kk her in the freezer. Just steam them or try the microwave method to get that soft, pillowy texture again. Royal Bakery appears to be a small family run business, and their baos are quite good. Royal Bakery has an assortment of pastries and candies. I simply love their steam buns especially warm out of the steamer. The meat is good and fresh with quality ingredients in the mixture. I only witsh for more filling because it is so delicious. The candies are also wonderful and made with whole ingredients. BUN HEAVEN My family always comes here to grab as many Banh Bao as we can before heading up north. I personally came in to grab 30 Banh Bao before heading back and it was kind of hard to find at first but we'll worth it. I only got to try the two sweet baos this trip. Previously my friend has gotten us the meat bao for a road trip and those are pretty heavy aka loaded with a pretty compact ball of meat and egg. They're not bad. The green sweet bao has mung bean inside. The first bite was pretty dry in my opinion as it got stuck on the top of my mouth and i couldn't even chew it (I had to manually unstuck it). After that you encounter a generous amount of yellow bean paste inside which is about a 4/5 in sweetness for me. It was warm as they had just made them. The dough isn't the glutenny kind that stretches. It was more like crumbly bread type. Mung bean and taro baos now $1.25. I can't say I am a fan of the baos but wanted to share some pictures and current price which is still not bad. read more

I don't know what happened to this place, but I feel the quality has gone down. My I first started coming here prior to Covid, the bun was soft, fluffy and moist. Now, the prices had gone up and the bun is no longer soft and fluffy. In fact, I find it dry. I don't know if they changed their recipe, but when I first came here, the bun was still moist the next day. Now, it's difficult for me to eat the entire thing without having water or a drink to help take it down. The meat inside is still flavorful though. That seems to have stayed the same. I hope the owner sees this review and does something to correct the buns moisture content. read more

I want to give a shout out to Royal Bakery because they have some delicious banh bao. I bought one of the OG pork baos to snack on while we waited for our table at dim sum. It was so good! I ended up going back to buy a dozen of the pork and one of each of the colorful ones to bring back home to SJ. The green one, which was mung bean, was SOOO good. I regret not buying more and I'm definitely gonna make a detour just to buy more of their mung bean banh bao. Bonus points- they accept card! I know a lot of mom and pop shops don't accept cards so this was very cool because I try my best not to carry cash due to safety concerns. This place doesn't sell anything other than steamed buns but they're for a dollar and they taste great. We love it! We tried the lotus and mungbean buns. They are smaller than the palm of your hand but the buns are soft and they are not stingy with the filling. The paste is soft and delicious but not too sweet. The best part is, the guy is so nice, he offered to microwave it for us to eat right away. The bun is wrapped with clingfilm and we ate within a couple of minutes. Great afternoon snack. Hands down one of the best baos I've tried!! My favorite is their jumbo pork bao. The bao is so fluffy and nicely sweetened on the outside and the inside is filled with pork, sausage, and egg that are perfectly seasoned with a mix of savory/umami and slight sweetness. Because the bao is pretty big and they put in a generous amount of meat inside, I think this could be a substantial snack when you're pretty hungry or even a good light meal. I specifically wanted to try the SOFT SESAME CANDY WITH PEANUT (8.5/10). When I arrived on a Tuesday afternoon, about 7 people were waiting in line. All the customers were middle-aged Asians who spoke Vietnamese/Chinese/etc so I knew this place was legit. One box of Soft Sesame Candy (pictured here--I ate a few pieces already lol oops) is $12. The candy is nice and soft with a slightly gelatinous texture. It isn't too sweet, which I appreciate. I also love the little bits of peanut inside. Overall, I enjoy this candy--and on the plus side, I only need to eat a small piece to feel satisfied, which is great for my health! The employees were pretty good about only allowing 4 customers in at a time, for social distancing reasons. The man at the cash register was very friendly. There is a large parking lot nearby, and a few more large parking lots on the same block, so you definitely have your parking options, especially if you go at a down time like a weekday afternoon. read more

But if I had taken a look at the signs, it was clearly NOT Chinese as I surmised. And the patient, multilingual man behind the counter spoke English, albeit haltingly. I have no idea if it was the same guy as 4 years ago, but his kindness and wonderful, edentulous smile completely disarmed me this time around. "Please, please, please be the same baker," my most desperate thoughts raced inside my head. So what do we really have here? Today, the bakery looks much more modern and cleaner than I remembered. Still tiny, and still sporting just under 20 reviews after all these years (WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUSE GUYS?), this bakery offers a real treasure, Vietnamese baos called Bánh bao thit heo (I know I got it right this time because I sneaked a picture to cover my a**). Those steamed Bánh baos are just as I remembered, still as massive, but mostly because of the generous filling. The steamed bread was delicately sweet and not too thick; the copious filling consisted of finely ground pork and minced water chestnut (for that ever so subtle crunch), just a touch of Chinese sausage, wood ear mushrooms (yum), and a chunk of hard boiled egg. You will have to trust those other Yelpers who are "in the know" as to their authenticity, but you can also trust me when I say, these are delicious and a real bargain. $1.75 buys you one huge, tender, satisfying combination of the most mouth watering steamed bread and flavorful filling known to man (and this wo-man). The bakery that has everything!! Neighborhood bakery for all your Asian goodies! I needed to buy some sesame candy for my engagement ceremony and other bakeries said they don't make it until it's closer to lunar new year. I walked in to this bakery and they had some on the counter! They told me to just call in a few days before my ceremony to double check if they had any and if not to order and they have some ready. This place has the absolute best 7 nut or whatever specialty moon cakes. The taro moon cake is also amazing as the layers are made with a light flaky layers. We get dozens of boxes each year from this location. They also have a lot of traditional peanut and sesame brittle snacks, and the soft sesame chews that my family absolutely adores - sold for $9-11. Royal Bakery is a fantastic bakery in the Rosemead area. Every time we are in Rosemead, we do not leave without buying banh baos at Royal Bakery. They make them fresh and are about $1.75-$2 per bao. My mom buys them by the boxes, and every person we've shared them with love these pork banh baos. They're super delicious, right down to the egg and lap xuong in the middle. It's a small shop. Royal Bakery is a gem. The location is so discreet, it's located on a main street, however, the store itself is tiny. You could walk by it so many times and not even know it's there. This place is family owned. They speak Teochew, a Chinese dialect that I also speak. The food here is delicious. They specialize in cakes, but at Chinese New Year, their food is AMAZING. Everything is made fresh, DAILY. They have all my favorites for the hoilday, including peanut brittle, banh tet (sticky rice with beans and pork), sticky sesame candy, and many other bakery items. I literally buy two of everything in this store. But it ends up being more money than I have. Love the service here. If they run out of something you like, just let them know, they will make it for you. Or if you need to make arrangements for pick up, they will accommodate. I'd love to rate this place higher, but I felt like John Cleese in the "Cheese Shop" Monty Python skit. The time was around early afternoon, their sign said "bakery", the shelves were labeled for baked goods, there seemed to be some baking and steaming equipment, but NO PRODUCTS. You probably think I'm being dramatic, but I'm not. There were literally 3-4 banh bo steamed buns and nothing else but empty shelves. I asked the man where all the food was and he said "sorry, it's our grand opening. It not ready yet." ???? The review is for the "da bao"/"banh bao"/"jumbo pork bun". The da bao (directly translated as Big Bun) migrated from southern China to Vietnam, where it was adopted as a banh bao. It's more complicated than a regular pork bun. It has pork, sometimes a piece of chicken, wood ear fungus, slice/half a hard-boiled egg, and a piece of Chinese sausage. The da bao here only three, but adds onions and diced bamboo shoots. The filing is tasty and moist. Those are pluses, however, the steamed bread is not very fluffy; kinda gummy when chewed. And the ratio of bread to filling is off; bit too much bread. When you have gummy bread and for bread than filling, the bun becomes kinda dry; each bite is more bread than juicy filling. For the price, it's better than going to Chinatown. It does hit the spot. Another couple of positives, they make these constantly and will have freshly steamed buns most mornings. Perhaps, the best way to eat this is to cut it in half. read more
