    Tomato curry
    Karen T.

2 years later and I'm giving Piccalilli another go. This time with 2 girlfriends of mine after 6 months of planning dinner. Since both of them were running a bit late. The phone line was busy so I was able to pass by and change our time from 6p to 630pm with the host in the front. From my last experience, I had suggested we eat outside in the patio. Very thankful we did because like I remembered, it was pretty loud inside and I could actually hear our conversations. Great vibes and music as always. We got the following: - 6.8/10 a filling Caesar salad but didn't wow me (but our waiter gave some hot sauce to add to it, solid option) - 8/10 a flavorful yet salty tomato curry (also filling, took leftovers home). - 9.5/10 crispy rice salad (always a crowd favorite) - 9/10 albacore crudo - 8.5/10 katsu - 8/10 perfect soft yet crisp roti was a great choice for the curry, however a bit too oily - 9/10 1 Thai tonic and 2 medicine balls with one with a splash of Belvedere ;) Thanks to our waiter for being accommodating !

This was a cute dinner spot serving asian fusion dishes. Their food was a lot of smaller plates, great for sharing so you can try different things. My favorite dishes were the brussel sprouts, the wings, and the curry. Service was also really quick and friendly.

Spicy chicken wings! So flavorful and crazy kick to them. I only wish there was more!

Came here for happy hour and really enjoyed our experience. We ordered a couple of different drinks and plates, all incredibly flavor and yummy. I will say their prices seem steep to come on a usual day but the happy hour felt pretty reasonable, with items being $12 or under. We loved the Brussel sprouts which were slightly crispy and incredibly flavorful. The wings were also amazing but the kick was pretty powerful so wouldn't recommend unless you love spice. The hotdog was amazing, however the price was crazy considering it was only a few bites worth. And the pork belly was good but not as flavorful as I expected, it was very citrus and mainly just tasted of ponzu. Servers were all very kind and attentive and the food was really good. I will def be back!

Me. Love. Pork. So, when I saw photos of the Miso Pork Jowl at Piccalilli, I knew I had to try it out. Arrived in time for happy hour (Saturdays from 4-6pm) and sat right at the bar. Bartender was nice and helpful. To start, I ordered a frozen cocktail. Super delicious and had me thinking of summer. I also grabbed a Makong sour. Also super good. But I knew what I was there for. That pork! Loved the fact that this was featured on the happy hour menu. Such a great little deal. It was delicious too! Oh my. Crispy pieces of pork in a delicious miso broth with jalapeno, cilantro, and Daikon. I was immediately a fan. My only regret is not getting a little side of rice to throw in the broth when I finished the pork, but I'll try that next time. It was too good! Super nice solo date to Piccalilli! I'm a huge fan of great food in cozy, casual spots! I know I'll be back.

Ahh...OK, so off the bat, I'm going to say the food for me was 3 stars. But I am adding extra stars because the overall ambiance and the restaurant itself was super cute. Not to mention, we were able to reserve a spot at the bar pretty last minute on a Saturday night. The service was good enough for us, pretty friendly but didn't go out of their way to check in on us. But then again it was pretty busy. I'm not sure if my tastes in food changed, but everything...and I mean everything we ordered was just....too salty and rich-flavored for my taste. We ordered the pork jowl (4/5), brussel sprouts (3/5), udon (2/5), tomato curry (4/5) and I loved...none of it. The pork jowl I didn't mind actually, but the brussel sprouts...I could barely tasted any of the veggie flavor from all the seasoning. Perhaps we just ordered the wrong things and not the restaurant's main specialties. I also ordered the Thai Iced Tea....it was....interesting -- tasted more unique, a little different, a little....heavier?...compared to other Thai Iced Teas I've had before. If I were to pick the dish I liked, it was probably the pork jowl. The tomato curry was second -- the rice balls in it really threw me off. We thought they were meatballs and almost wished they were lol. I like that the bar has hooks underneath to hang my purse and jacket. I liked the cute lit up outdoor area. I liked the overall intimacy of the restaurant. Really cute overall date spot for me and hubby.

We were starving after entire day of apartment hunting in Santa Monica. Glad we were driving by this lively street and were surprised to see the street so lively on a weekday 7pm. We picked this place and were immediately seated in a cozy corner. Chicken katsu Curry - good, not great. We are katsu lovers but this one was different and nice. Nothing mind blowing though. Green shrimp ball curry- this one made us give an extra star. The curry was so flavorful without any extra spice. The shrimp balls were generous amount and were cooked perfect. Overall a great evening and we are def coming back to this street to try more places.

There's 2 parking lots across the streets, we parked at the one through an alleyway and it was $2, no validation. I came here with my coworkers and the 6 of us were seated at the only triangle table, was a little strange but we quickly appreciated it! Much easier to share food than a round table. The food is all amazing, we ordered the following and it was very filling. - Brussel sprouts - Crispy rice salad - Miso Pork (We doubled up on this to share, and it was a crowd favorite!) - Albacore crudo - Ribeye (comes with ramen and soup) - Thai chicken Katsu The Tree Star cocktail was also really good, super unique. It's not for everyone tho, my coworker thought it was the weirdest drink ever but I enjoyed it. Would definitely come back again!

Such a cute place with great views of downtown from inside or from their patio seating. Waiters were friendly and gave us popular options since it was my first time here. I would reorder the wings and cocktail next time definitely. Heres what we tried: BANGTAO TEA: Blue Ice Potato Vodka, Sweetened Thai Iced Tea, Coconut Cream ALBACORE CRUDO: Ginger scallion oil, pine nut crispies, fresno sambal, cucumber CRISPY RICE SALAD: King oyster mushrooms, sambal, onion, herbs (v) NAM PRIK WINGS: Herb salad, peanuts, lime

The food at Piccalilli was delicious, the service was fast, and the staff were attentive. I recommend trying them out if you're in the area, especially during Happy Hour!

    GREEN PAPAYA SALAD
    Catelin D.

The papaya salad has unmatched flavor. With a profile this special & unique, it is hard to compare with anything else on the Downtown Culver strip -or at least that side of the street. They give you fresh blankets if seated outdoors and I hope to try something else soon since this has been my go-to for a while. This is spicy btw.

Still a cute spot with friendly service, but the portions have gotten smaller since I've last been here. I like the Nam Prik wings and the Yaki Udon. The chocolate cake we got for dessert was also tasty. The Thai iced tea and mango lassi mocktails were lackluster. Indoor and outdoor seating available, and single occupant restrooms available indoors. Credit cards accepted. There's paid garage parking or metered spots.

We came for a double date and our server was amazing! He was extremely patient, kind, and helpful as my fiancé and i had never been here before Everything is tapas style and tends to be on the spicier side but we loved it and honestly had no problem with the heat! I do wish it wasn't so dark inside but i also understand that it's the vibe they're going for. All in all everything was delicious and we'll definitely be returning!

Has everything you could want out of a west side spot from moody vibes and being in an amazing plaza area. The food is super super good clean and well elevated. My one gripe with it which might be simple a personal opinion is it needs a bit more spice all around but other then that I think the level of quality is pretty up there so I think it all comes together super well. The service is pretty well paced and very knowledgeable too about everything on the menu. Love a place that opens up with allergy questions and they checked that box. Brussels sprouts are the sleeper pick on this menu

The location has a spacious area filled with a variety of wine options. I picked a Bourgogne Chardonnay from France ($36). We came on a late Monday afternoon and, lucky for us, they have a bar special on Mondays: No corkage fee! They also have Happy Hour-- Monday to Friday from 3-6pm. The Chardonnay was divine! I would totally return and purchase another bottle. We also ordered a charcuterie board and took advantage of their happy hour special for $20 (pick two-- one cheese and one meat). We opted for the 'Humboldt Fog' Chèvre as our cheese option and the Bresaola for our meat option. Both were delicious, but the chèvre was truly exquisite. We shared one charcuterie board with five people and it was enough; however if you're on the hungry side, I suggest two charcuterie boards for five or six people. In addition to meat and cheese, it comes with crackers, some pickled veggies, onion jam, candied nuts, whole grain Dijon, and apple slices. On the left side of the venue you have your variety of wine options; on the right side, there's the bar and some tables, plus a small area with other snacks for purchase that pair nicely with wine or beer. They even sell the Torres truffle chips! My only complaint is the service, unfortunately. The lady at the cashier was super friendly, however the bar tender was not so welcoming. When he came over to our table to open our wine bottle, he didn't greet us, smile, or say anything. He took our bottle and opened it and then asked who was going to taste. Not sure if he thought we didn't speak English since we were speaking another language when he came to our table, but overall, we all noticed his attitude and thought it was rather unwelcoming. Because of this experience, I rate this place a 4/5, however, everything else was great!

I've enjoyed a wide range of wines from an orange one day, a pinot next, a buttery Chardonnay or a spicy Syrah. Every time I'm there it's a fun experiment. :) If you're a lightweight like me, I'd suggest eating a meal beforehand because the menu is pretty light. The place itself is very modern and nice. Overall the vibe it basically a Houston's-type place. And service was good. All of the food overall was very good. Nothing really too crazy. To me, the menu is a little... boring. But, I will say everything was tasty. We got the Cajun shrimp salad (which was simple and clean but tasty), a cheese pizza for the kids (which was good!), a brisket French dip (very tasty and a horseradish sauce with a LOT of bite), a vodka pasta (was good but it actually is TOO big a portion to eat by one's self), the Ahi Tuna frites (the tuna was good and served with a nice green sauce), and the grilled cabbage side (with brown butter and some pomegranate molasses--it was actually my favorite thing!). The key distinctive thing about Laurel Grill seems to be that a lot of things get cooked by that fire which really adds a nice smoky touch (like the shrimp and the ahi tuna and the cabbage). My only major complaint would be the fries were just okay. After a minute or two they weren't crispy anymore. As good as everything else was, I thought they would step things up with the fries but they were just average. Anyways, while I overall am not that excited by the menu, it definitely is a great place to go where everybody will be able to find something tasty to eat. And overall, the portions were pretty fair.

Well, Dine LA is happening and what better way than to try places you've been eyeing. I've heard good things about this place from friends that's been numerous of times and each visit was always amazing. Of course as it's part of Dine LA, it was a given to come and try this place for the first time. We had a reservation on a Friday night which was the start of Dine LA and let me say, this place was packed. Every single tables inside and out was utilized. They've made a name for themselves if it was that lively. Good on their part. It wasn't a long wait till our table was ready. We got seated on the patio side just along the street. Covered canopy with both hi top tables and standard tables. Positive side, there were loads of heat lamps as well as heated fireplaces separating pretty much all the tables. Gotta keep everyone warm during our LA winter. Inside is quite small compared to the seating outdoor with only a few tables. As Dine LA was happening, they offered a three course meal for 45.00 per person. If you weren't interested in that, their regular menu does offer loads of amazing dishes as well. We started off a bottle of their French Pinot which was quite nice. Not too strong and very smooth. Nice pair for dinner. Service was excellent and was taken good care by our waitress which I didn't get her name. She was great and very friendly. Dine LA Menu Starters -Soupe a l'oignon (French onion soup) melted Gruyère and brioche croutons -Ahi tuna tartare- avocado, balsamic reduction and spicy Cajun chips -Escargot a l'ail- 1/2 dozen escargot in garlic and parsley butter Mains -Boeuf Bourguignon- slow roasted beef stew with creamy potatoes puree in red wine sauce -Coq au Vin- braised chicken leg with glazed carrots, pearl onions and bordelaise sauce -Moules Frites (Mussels and fries)- PEI mussels in bisque sauce with garlic, Chablis, brandy Dessert -Crème brûlée- vanilla bean and turbinando sugar -Apple tarte tatin- caramelized apples with puff pastry dough and caramel sauce -Profiteroles- choux dough filled with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and roasted almonds. We each went with one of the starters. The French onion soup was perfect. The broth with the melted cheese, it was amazing. The flavors of everything paired together were perfect. Tuna tartare was great. The seasoning with the glaze and chips to paired with was great. Also fish was perfect and fresh. Lastly the escargot. If this doesn't scream French, I didn't know what does. I've had it at other restaurants and I can say this was amazing. The garlic sauce was perfect. Snails had a nice taste to it and quite tasty. Not tough at all. Everything was excellent. Mains, the boeuf Bourguignon was tasty. Nice chunks of beef with a nice thick sauce and pared with mashed potatoes. Sauce was excellent and not too strong. And the mussels, which was a hefty portion. The sauce which was like a lobster bisque was excellent. I'm use to a wine broth but the bisque was amazing. Nice meaty mussels cooked perfectly. We had to order a side of baguette for the bisque. Dessert, the profiteroles which I highly recommend. Two amazing pieces of puffed pastries filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with chocolate sauce. Mouthwatering at its best. And lastly the apple tarte, the right amount of sweetness and baked to perfection also served with ice cream. I can say that my first time here was amazing. The service, the food and everything was amazing. Not only dinner, they're also offering Dine LA for lunch. Regardless, it's going to be a priority to come back for another meal. Staff members were friendly, and our server in particular was super nice. The restaurant was extremely busy, which minimized check-ins with us, but I did generally feel taken care of. Unfortunately, I had a rather subpar experience with the food itself. At somewhat high prices, I expected a stellar croque monsieur. I generally found the dish salty, greasier than it should have been, and lacking in flavor. I also ordered the tomato basil soup, and it was extremely salty and tasted of pureed tomatoes with no seasoning. Additionally, my friend's Benedict actually came out incorrectly (crab instead of lobster). I should also mention that the menu is somewhat unclear about what is/isn't included in a meal. I recommend asking upfront before deciding, especially for combos exclusions and which side dishes are paired with entrees (note that the Benedicts come with additional sides that aren't listed). Unfortunately, it didn't feel worth the trip with so many other great restaurants within that same block.
