For my 200th review, I wanted to send a little love out to a place that combines some of my favorite things -- a rural New England setting, seasonal vegetarian food, fresh herbs, nostalgia. The Pickity Place cottage has been around for over 200 years, and the restaurant and gift shop have probably existed for longer than I have. I remember coming here with family friends when I was a small child, and getting a little lunch basket with a peanut butter sandwich. I always remembered the trip as being "over the river and through the woods," and not just because the property was the setting for the illustrations of Little Red Riding Hood. You literally travel through the woods, down a bunch of winding roads, to get to this pretty little setting. Luckily for me, my parents have now moved to a location much nearer to this dear little place. So on my last visit home, my mother and I decided to go and enjoy their $16, set menu, five course gourmet lunch. Pickity Place has always been extremely vegetarian friendly -- I think they only served vegetarian meals back in the day -- and it is some of the best food I've had anywhere. Fresh herbs from their garden grace almost every course, starting from the delicious herbed dip with freshly baked bread, to the warm soup, to the crisp salad, to the entree decorated with springs of rosemary and thyme. Portion sizes are perfect -- not too big, not too small -- so that you can savor every dish and still have room for dessert. During the winter months, hot apple cider, spiced tea, and mocha drinks are available to wash it all down, along with iced teas or lavender lemonade. Reservations are suggested for their busy lunchtime seatings, but you can usually call on the day you want to go and reserve space for you and your companions. The staff is very friendly and gracious, dressed in old-fashioned aprons, and makes sure you always have water and a warm drink. Though the main draw to Pickity Place is the food, there are other things you can check out if you're not hungry or you're looking for a New Hampshire style gift. The little museum is set up to show you the big bad wolf lying in bed dressed as grandmother, which is particularly fun for the little ones. The gift shop is extensive and includes plenty of spiced teas and serving accompaniments, herb mixes for everything from popcorn to roasts, and lots of other random things for your home or kitchen. You'll also find foods to sample while you're waiting to be seated. You can wander the garden property, which I'm sure is even better in the spring when everything's in bloom. Pickity Place wants to bring its guests back to a simpler time, and you definitely will relax here. Andrew pegged it perfectly. What a wonderful place to have lunch! The grounds alone are worth a trip, just to walk around and take pictures. Food was presented with great care, garnished with edible flowers from the garden. At one point during the meal, I saw one of the cooks run outside, snip some herbs, and run back inside. Now that's fresh! Some ladies were really dressed, hats and all, which added to the "afternoon tea" feeling. Our waitress was such a doll and very attentive. What a find! I have been here several times. This time it is down pouring rain. We went to check in and were told that there is a shower and we wouldn't seat us on time. It would be 30 mins later and even that sounded sketchy. We drove 1hr 20 mins to get here. Now we are stuck in our car waiting. We are now drenched and they did not offer coffee or apologize. I get there is an event but they should have set up the next seating with delays in mind. Offer coffee or something. We will see if we get in at 4pm. Adding that they are making people walk through the pouring rain to use the restroom instead of walking through the dry restaurant!! It is 4pm and now they say another 10 mins. NO APOLOGY. When having one of their outstanding lunches, it makes me feel so fancy. Officially, I'm a lady who lunches. If you aren't at the first lunch sitting, it seems like they are usually running a few minutes behind. This is totally fine with me, as I'm usually out in the gardens admiring the flowers and smelling everything. While not everything on the menu is a knock of the park, most is, I applaud their willingness to take a risk and try something new. While I usually don't go for vegetarian meals, I highly suggest getting them here. The flavors of the locally grown, and fresh produce is out of this world. The lavender lemonade is outstanding. Usually a few packs make it back to Arizona. In the visit last week, my six year old nephew wanted to go with us. I really appreciated that they were open to him being with us, and trying hard to use his "fancy" manners. They treated him respectfully, and were kind acknowledging that he didn't have to like everything. He enjoyed being able to have a nice meal with us. read more

Lovely setting with an attached gift shop. They aren't particularly well set for folks with ambulatory issues (only restroom has steps up and down, and the room is cozy, so walkers may be impeded). I don't think I'd bring someone in a wheelchair unless there are other accommodations made in other seasons. The food was good, though we were all wishing we'd get bread with our soup course. Instead, it's a separate course and unless you've saved some, you can't swipe the bowl to get the last tasty bits. read more

This is my all-time favorite restaurant. The setting is beautiful ,quaint and sweet. It's amazing to find this cute little place in the middle of the woods surrounded by Gardens. The five course gourmet luncheon is amazing every time you go. It changes monthly to go with the seasons. I'll mostly refer you to Frank M's review because his was so good at describing the place and the meal. Definitely a gem to come across in Mason, NH. Fixed priced menu changes. Ours today included a french onion dip with crackers, a squash soup, a salad, pork tenderloin or squash, and a cheesecake for dessert. The non-alcoholic drinks they offered were included in the meal price. I ordered the raspberry orange iced tea which was heavenly and then I bought the mix in their little store. They operate by having several fixed time seatings. They are efficient and you don't feel rushed during your slotted time. Definitely you must make reservations. A wonderful experience especially in a group. We were a group of seven women and they accommodated us with side by side tables that we pushed together. Be sure to take a look-and-see in their store. This is probably my favorite restaurant in New England. I used to live in Portland, Maine and was spoiled by the variety of unique options to- but only a few even came close. Pickity Place features a fixed 5 course meal with vegetarian& omnivore options for your entree, plus a desert. Each dish features their own seasonal vegetables alongside a parade of other local selections. Even the drinks here go above and beyond- Lavender Lemonade with the entrée and Mochas served with dessert for me. All served by a delightful and knowledgeable We have made this a monthly tradition- and watching the gardens transition year-round is a delight unto itself. We went to Pickety Place for a small baby shower. Pickety Place is a cute little restaurant and gift shop in Mason, NH. Each month they feature two different meal options. Make sure you check their menu to ensure you like what they are serving. They are open to reservations only. Their parking lot is very small and disorganized, difficult to find parking. Their waiting area is also small, since we had gifts they did the best they could to accommodate us. The dining room itself is cramped when you have a larger party. I felt it was more suitable for a party of four or less. The food was flavorful, nice presentation and small enough portions you are able to get through all five courses. Since we were a bigger party I felt a little rushed because we had to be out by a certain time. I would visit again, but with a smaller party. Ok last year when I saw an ad in Yankee Magazine about Pickity we drove up the same day just to check it out. It was a warm day, beautiful out, and right around closing time. I was enchanted right off the bat!!! It's like I was in a dream...little Red Riding Hood house, beautiful old twisting trees, gardens after garden, stone paths, cats , green house full of plants for purchase, a cute gift store where can buy herbs and other novelties. .....Then we decided to come back when they were open during the day which was a completely different experience.... The difference this time: PEOPLE. In droves. Suddenly the charm of this place went out the window as we had to shuffle by people, old and young, kids, babies, grandmas. We made a reservation for lunch which is ALWAYS a good idea (we came again the following year and was turned away because there was no room which sucks when you are starving, thank God for Parkers Maple Barn down the road!). There is a bell that rings, everyone moves in like cattle and sits crammed in a green house-like dining area. The food is good, not out of this world, but presented nicely, and is served course by course. Then soon after when the last course is served, its time for the heard to shuffle out single file....Mooooooo! Mooooo! This place would be great if there were 80% less people and just a more relaxed way of dining-enough of this bell business. But I'm sure this will never change as they have done it this way for years. So it works for them, not me so much. read more

I loved this place!! It is in the middle of a residential area way out in the middle of nowhere in Greenville ,NH. This place is adorable. There is a small book store (where you check in for lunch) , a cute little gift store where they have all kinds of dried herbs, coffee's and kitschy little knick knacks. We bought a bunch of herbs and some, lemonade, and tea and a coffee Mix. The lunch. They have a five course luncheon with seatings at 11:30, 12:45 and 2:00pm. Imagine being transported to a blissful place away from chaos and noise to a place of peace and tranquility. That is the just definition of Pickity Place. My mom was told about this place from someone she knows and was going to save it for my birthday bit I am glad she didn't. We made reservations for the 12:45 sitting for lunch and arrived a but earlier do we walked the grounds, took pictures and visited the gift shop. The sell all their herbs they grow spice mixes, loose leaf teas as well as other cool and nifty things. The bell rang and we were seated instantly and sat down to a table with a pitcher if lemon and mint water which is our fave. The soup was then served immediately followed by ever course in order. Everything was fresh and beautiful. The plates were beautifully set up and service pristine. I tried the lavender Lemonade. Yum then had the spice tea to have with desert. Yum! The thing that blew me out of the water was the desert... Key lime piece it rum soaked plantain. So delightful We were pleased and full at the end of it. I am already planning three more trips! I was here for a bachelorette party and oh my, this is probably one of the best places I have ever eaten. Everything is so fresh and flavorful, the portion sizes are perfect, and the dining room and property are adorable! For $21 per person, you get a delicious five-course meal. The menu changes every month and offers one meat dish and one vegetarian option, but for the most part, everyone in the dining room is eating the same meal. Fussy eaters need not apply! Aside from the restaurant, they have some nice gardens to walk through, a greenhouse, and a gift shop that sells herbs and other knick-knacks. There's also two really cute, friendly cats roaming the property. I would love to come back again, and everyone in our party was very pleased. The only complaint was from my friend who accidentally ate the entire mint leaf off her key lime pie in one bite and was overwhelmed, but really, whose fault is that?? :) read more

This is the most special place I've ever been to! I've been coming here for years- multiple times each year! I love introducing people to Pickity! It has changed a bit I've noticed since being bought - some good some not so good but I hope it was always continue to impress! There are foods I won't eat but have tried and trusted Pickity to make it work and to my surprise they always have! This place is in the middle of nowhere and down a dirt road. It's the best surprise ever! The gardens are incredible. My gals and I were saying we'd even go for brunch in the gardens if it was ever offered. What a lovely, lovely place. What a refreshing change from the chains. I visited Pickity Place in July with my 16 year old grand daughter. I was wondering if I did the right thing, most 16 year olds are not into this type of establishment. She loved it so very much, so much that we returned in August. The food and presentation is absolutely lovely. I was only able to get a reservation in July because someone else cancelled. For today I had a reservation for two. Our visit today was less enjoyable. Our tiny table was pushed flush up against the wall. I was seated on one side, my grand daughter on the other. The remaining side had a work station for the waitstaff, which was flush against our table. The waitress sat down her tray with many, many drinks, then food, to be served to other diners, while checking her tickets. Often she came so close to me, she was obviously standing, I was seated, her caboose was nearly in my face. When clearing her tables, she sat all her dirty dishes onto that work station, which was literally one with our table and I had the pleasure of viewing the dirty dishes. The place is small, one has to be tolerant, however, our experience today was not great. Please keep doing what you are doing, but your guests should not have such an experience. One less table for the guests' comfort will ensure their return. read more

Step into this fairy-tale garden house in the middle of the woods for a high tea and high spirits in the delightfully quiky old home that inspired the imagery for Golden Books' Little Red Riding Hood. Oozing with charm and triangle cut finger sandwiches, Pickity Place is a deeply-hidden yet not-so-hidden gem deep in the glen. Driving to it, you figure you'll never be heard from again. But when you arrive, you find the parking lot packed and a line out the door. The charm of the fairy garden exterior is matched inside by low ceilings and cozy quarters with cottage chic decor. And how can you not be enchanted by the cottage from Red Riding Hood?! My, grandma, what big tea cakes you have! On the food itself -- a downside of a prix fixe menu that sells out regularly is there is the sense of being rushed through the courses rather than being able to relax and enjoy the cute atmosphere and fine fare. They churn out the experience in order to prep for the next chow time, whose line has already begun to form outside. Perhaps a little more leeway between serving times would alleviate this hurry-hurry worry. This may also contribute to our food being hit and miss. Some aspects perfect, others overdone or not enough. It is a pricey meal to not have culinary perfection, but they do not seem to be hurting for it. If you know when you go that you will be eating in a revolving door, you'll be fine. Reservations are required for this prix fixe menu served seasonally. Each month the menu changes. It does tend to lean toward a bit of stereotyping girls and moms princess tea time, but foodie fellas like quaintness and tomato soup, too, and should not dismiss this place. Overall, the items that were excellent were very excellent. The charm of the place is beyond reproach, the grounds and greenhouse lush and lovely. Good gift shop. I suggest picking a menu you like and making a reservation sooner rather than later! They get busy; especially in the warmer months and fall! Call to make your reservation. They have 3 seatings per day. Today I had their September menu and the onion soup was hearty and tasty. I LOVED the blueberry crumble dessert. I left extremely full! Always do! For one price you get to pick a beverage like tea or lemonade (non alcoholic), crackers and spread, soup, salad, bread, entree and dessert! For two people plus tip I paid $62.00. Worth every penny! The service is quick since it's a set menu (two choices for your entree, the rest is set). I will say, the inside is very small and might seem cramped to you if you don't like being too close to the party next to you but I find it to be cozy! Go early and wait for the lunch bell! What an experience. My best friend, Marissa, is from the esteemed region of southern New Hampshire, and every November I make a point of heading up after Thanksgiving to spend some time outside the city. Saturday morning at 9am, when the phone lines opened, she was immediately on the phone with Pickity Place to make us a lunch reservation. Luckily, they could fit us in at 2, which gave us plenty of time to explore the area. Pickity Place is everything right about the world. If you aren't already aware of their "thing", they are herb people, growing every herb imaginable on site and then offering five course meals using all fresh ingredients from the farm, for the affordable price of 21.95 (without tip). With little shops tucked away in various barns and sheds over the property, you can even take the experience back home with you. The main shop has fresh teas, herbs, dip mixes, chili mixes, pancake mixes, etc. using the farm grown herbs and vegetables. All are reasonably priced considering the freshness and portion. My best friend was all about the tea, I was all about the dip. We had the chance to try the Curry Dip, which was absolutely fantastic. A little behind schedule, we were seated at 2:30. The dining room is located inside the "Red Riding Hood House", which is actually a house chosen by Elizabeth Orton Jones as the model for her illustrations in Little Red Riding Hood (1948). The interior of the dining room is much like dining in a home, with a warm, cottage feel. We were greeted right away by a friendly hippie-server, so I felt right at home. Certain drinks are included, and what an eclectic selection we were given: spice tea, raspberry orange tea, various herbal teas, mocha coffee, or lavender lemonade. Marissa went for the spice tea, as the cold rainy weather left her craving some mulled cider, and I chose the lavender lemonade. 10/10. The flavor was amazing and exactly what we wanted. The November menu was diverse, and we were excited. First, we began with the French Onion dip and crackers. We had just purchased this dip mix, and it did not disappoint. As people continued to be seated, we scarfed it down without question. Shortly after, we were presented with the Ribollita Soup, which was perfectly seasoned and warmed us up immediately. The Grilled Bartlett Pear Salad was to follow, which may have been the best salad I have had to date, easily understandable considering how fresh it was. For entrees, we had two options: the Rosa Coq Au Vin Stew with Roasted Vegetables or the Root Vegetable Strudel. Naturally, we got one of each and swapped bites. The stew was a mushroom base with dark meat chicken and rice, topped with a thick cut of bacon. The Strudel, a phyllo dough cup filled with vegetables, swiss, and brie, topped with a red pepper jam. I could not believe how each course got better than the last. These people know what they are doing. Lastly, we finished off with the Cardamom and Espresso Tira Mi Su, which despite being full, we made room for. We enjoyed this with a "Mocha Coffee", which was filled with cinnamon flavor and the perfect end to our meal. From start to finish, my experience here was five stars. It is hard to get on the list, but absolutely worth it. I found that they were much easier able to accommodate small groups. This place would be great for a Mother's Day lunch. Pickity place is located in a tiny town and down a dirt road. They also have a beautiful cat on site that freely walks around. It was fun to watch as I was sitting and eating. I felt like I was a guest eating at a fairy's home. The gift shop was nice to explore, stock up on spices if you need them. Dehydrated soups as well! They have another garden shop outback with beautiful bird feeders to purchase and other garden items. Only problem I had was while dining your kinda close to other tables. We had a large crowd near us and they seemed a little trashy and loud. It wasn't that bad though, the pros outweigh the cons. read more

A destination restaurant. Yes, its in the middle of nowhere. Yes, it may be hard to get to. But, keep in mind that with the monthly rotating menu, some people come each and every month. Its that good. Its that special. Location: At the end of a well graded dirt road there's a house that was used as the basis for the Golden Books Little Red Riding Hood illustrations. Built in the 1700's and nestled in the woods of southern New Hampshire, Pickity Place also features extensive herb gardens, a gift shop and a greenhouse. The plants and herbs are used extensively in the restaurant courses. The only warning that I would add is that although the road is well maintained you might not want to bring your sports car because inevitably ruts will develop and you could bottom out. Parking is plentiful but informal and on the side of the road. Weekends are extremely busy so there might be a short walk to get to the restaurant. People are very relaxed so if you have older diners its fairly easy to drop them off near the door. Food: As mentioned, Pickity Place has a rotating monthly 5-course menu. The price is currently around $23. You must call ahead for reservations as they have limited space and seatings are scheduled so that they can deliver excellent service. At the time of the seating you are brought to your table and given a choice of several excellent and seasonal beverage choices. The drinks are included in the price of the meal. There is apparently a BYOB policy as well if you'd like to bring some wine. The water pitchers at the table are filled and there are herbs in the pitcher that make even the water special. Courses begin immediately - being able to control the seating time makes timing the courses much easier. Each course is a work of art - well plated and delicious looking. It was fun going with a group. As each course was brought everyone said - ok, this is the best ever, I could just eat this for the meal. Nothing but compliments for each course. Even courses like tabbouleh - that some people said they never eat - were greeted with enthusiasm. Each course ordinarily features multiple herbs and flowers from their garden. Just awesome is all I can say. I'll upload some pictures from our May visit. Our meal consisted of : New England Vegetable Dip Spinach Egg Drop Soup with Garden Lovage Tabbouleh with Early Season Mints Parmesan Herb Bread Beef Boursin En Croute -- or -- Asparagus Phyllo Wrap with a Zesty Vodka Tomato Cream Mixed Spring Greens with Dill Butter Strawberry Brownie Cheesecake Half of us got the beef and half the asparagus dish. No one was disappointed. Other: there is a frequent diner reward program. If you dine 6 times at Pickity Place then your 7th meal is free. The gift shop is cute and features crafty items and an extensive herb packet collection including packs that promise to emulate some of the things served in the restaurant - like the lavender lemonade. Herb plants are also for sale. These are a bit pricey and you might do better elsewhere although the collection is extensive and you might be able to get some herbs here that you can not find elsewhere. I really thought I would be the first person to review Pickity Place because 1) I have never met anyone else who has been there and 2) most of the people I have seen there are at least 60 years old. But I'm happy to see other glowing reviews because this place is an absolute treasure. My family loves to come here when we're all in the same area. Its fun for kids and adults, you get to visit a different time and appreciate nature together. It is oh so charming and you can tell the people who work there really love what they're doing. You can get a 5-course meal for dirt cheap and they serve herb-infused drinks along with it. It's been a long time since I've been to Pickity Place (which is hysterical seeing that I live closer to Mason, NH than ever before in my life), but it was a favorite lunch place of my mother's. My sisters, mother and I would often meet there for lunch, and catch up with all that was going on in our lives. Several windows overlooking lush green trees and flowers add a lavish amount of natural sunlight, and the table settings are formal but friendly. There is much laughter and conversation in the air, as groups of women and the occasional brave man enjoy the culinary delights placed before them. Perhaps the atmosphere felt warm and comforting because of the company I was in, or because the rustic, plant-filled cottage actually does feel a little bit like home. For less than $16, you can savor a five course meal that consists of crackers and dip, soup, a salad, an entree, a side vegetable, bread, and dessert. The menu is changed monthly, often reflecting the harvest of the season and all herbs used in the creations, come direct from Pickity Place's own gardens. Everything is decided for you when you arrive, except for beverage choice, and choosing between two entrees. There is always at least one vegetarian entree. Plates are garnished with edible flowers or herbs from the restaurant grounds, which if nothing else, adds to a simple yet elegant presentation. The food doesn't just look pretty, it tastes pretty! Gentle flavors effortlessly mix on your palate, and you can now discern the difference between fresh food from a garden, and that highly processed junk we find in chain restaurants. You may never go back to fast food again. Reservations are highly recommended, but I'm surprised they aren't required, as there is very limited seating. It is not an all day, anytime restaurant, lunch is served at 3 different seating times, 11:30, 12:45, and 2:00. After lunch, you are encouraged to explore the property and visit the gift shop. The gift shop is full of jams, soup and bread mixes, candles, and other goodies to take home or give away to friends. Writing this review of Pickity Place has made me long for it's abundant pleasures all over again. I think I'll have to make a reservation rather soon. PS. Over the river and through the woods...If Aunt of Grandmother or girlfriend is visiting, Pickity Place is the perfect place to take them for a day out and a superb lunch. Housed in a 200 year old cottage which was the inspiration for the book, "Little Red Riding Hood", the restaurant inside is right out of the storybook. The menu is vegetarian - but wait. It's not the kind you are thinking of, heavy with lentils and vegetable stewed into oblivion. This is three star vegetarian cuisine that is as beautiful to contemplate as it is scrumptious to eat. Every month the menu changes. Everything that I have eaten there has been amazing. Just make sure to go to mapquest and print out a map before you drive there because it can be tricky to find. read more

Today was not my first visit to Pickity Place; on the contrary, Tina [my mother] has dragged me there many times. The label that this place gets as a "little old lady lunch place" is well deserved. It is, and maybe that why I secretly love it so much. The drive through Milford and Wilton from Nashua to Greenville is very serene, and I found myself wanting to take a nap both there and back. When I told my friends about this place in grad school, they assumed I made it up. For the trip today, I finally brought them both there after almost 2 years of anticipation. Pickity didn't disappoint; the monthly menu (that changes, check their website!) was superb. I went for the veggie ravioli today, even though I'm usually a sucker for whatever meat they are serving up. My favorite is the rasberry iced tea, which really can't be beat ANYWHERE else. Whatever dip, bread, and assorted butter for said bread the serve up is divine. I wasn't super crazy about the cold soup today, or the over-the-top strawberry salad dressing. That said, this probably the best meal I'll have all week in NH. It's just that good. Totally worth the trip. This was the sweetest little place...really over the river and through the woods. The food was delicious an served in the perfect portions by fairies with flowers in their hair. The menu is seasonal and changes monthly which means I will definitely be visiting again. The raspberry iced tea is a must and the pecan pie divine. Visit the garden shops and buy some herbs for your next culinary adventure. This was a beautiful drive in the fall, I can't imagine what it'll look like in the spring. read more

Listen. This entire place is SO adorable, not to mention the amazing service and the fact that they were able to squeeze us in same-day, last-minute. I was in town visiting, and was told this was a place I absolutely needed to try. The food was so fresh and expertly prepared (using things from the Pickety garden, which was a great touch). The drinks were so good, especially the lavender lemonade and spiced tea (think apple cider but with orange!)- and you can change between drinks throughout your meal. The red riding hood theme is sprinkled all throughout and the restaurant definitely reminds me of "grandmother's house"- small and quaint. The rest of the grounds are just breathtaking. Lots of greenery, a full greenhouse, and two shopping stores: one with various Pickety merch, jewelry, teas and dips served in the restaurant, etc; and one focused on gardening. They also have plants and herbs for sale which just adds to this place's charm. Since the menu changes every month, I would love to come back and see what's new! read more
