I visited Pie Punks solo on a Tuesday evening during the World Cup in late June. I didn't know it when I walked in, but the owners/folks working there were very much Mexico fans and they were excited for the match. When you find a restaurant called pie punks, of course it's a must to try it. The overall vibe the restaurant is super cool, and everyone that works there is really nice. The food on the other hand is mediocre at best. Pizza is no longer that go to quick inexpensive meal, but it should be good, if not amazing. This experience was none of that. The crust on the pizza was very rubbery and tasted like paste. The toppings were just as bad. The pizza sauce tasted like something that had been poured out of a can, and the toppings did not scream fresh and delicious. The combination of everything together was just not good. Add the price tag, and it's a hard no moving forward. It's not a place I plan on going back to, and there are so many better places in the San Francisco area that have much better Pizza! Came here during happy hour (weekdays 4-6pm) for a small outing with coworkers. I had high expectations because it's quite popular with friends and i was not disappointed. it was very spacious and they were prepped with more seats because of downtown first thursdays. we ordered the broccolini's to start and they are definitely worth trying. good chrisp and just a little something healthy before you dig into some pizza. Our server recommended doing half pepperoni and half mauros molto meat on a grandmas style pizza. We liked the pepperoni but we really enjoyed the mauros molto meat we ended up ordering more of it. Guy at the end of the bar with baseball cap was rude. I ordered online and came in to get my food. He initially greeted me with a nasty tone. I grabbed my pizza from the counter and when I turned to leave he came from behind the bar to grab my pizza box and stop me. They have slice options as well as full pizza options. Happy hour from 4-6pm PST. Definitely worth checking out if in the area! Good prices too. Two slices filled me up. Quite a few places serve Detroit style pan pizza in the Downtown San Francisco area, so had a few choices. Pie Punks was the closest one walkable from our hotel, with a really good online rating. Like a lot of really popular pizza joints, it's mainly a bar atmosphere with a bar menu centered on pizza. I found the finished pizza to have an incredible crust, but a bit small with stingy toppings and burnt cheese/oil to make parts of it unpleasant. Happy Hour runs between 4 and 6 pm everyday, with some dollars off for drinks and pies. We came early enough to have choice of tables, with the place being packed by the time we left. There is table service provided by the double duty bartenders, and they were admirably able to keep up even with a full house, not forgetting any requests made verbally. Happy hour usually means my wife and I will try a first-time drink. She got the Goldfinger cocktail ($14 minus $2 for HH), and it was very strong. It was the first time I've tried a cocktail with popping boba (in this case, lychee flavor), and it was a really good addition. There were two draft beers we hadn't tried, Ghost Town Lager and Pranqster Golden Ale ($9 minus $1 for HH), so got the latter. Forgot that Golden Ale is hoppy, so ended up finishing it by myself (my wife won't drink hoppy beer). As for the main event, it came out pretty fast (under 15 minutes) once we ordered it. It was a Pepperoni Detroit ($23 minus $3 for HH), and the crust was fluffy, not too thick and very crunchy on the outside. The edges of the cheese had been cooked well, but beyond crunchy caramelization to make the corners really burnt (I like the corners of a Detroit, but this was too burnt even for me). I think the 10x8 pizza could be finished by one really hungry person...and a good amount for two. There is a 2% surcharge for using credit cards, and payment can be handled at the table, using Toast. For once, we didn't have leftovers so were quickly on our way. read more

Being five of us, there was only one table for us right by the kitchen in the back of the restaurant. Most of the tables are four tops so keep that in mind. Snag a table outside if you're lucky. this place was so awesome! Came with my coworker for a bite out and was amazed! We started with drinks, modelo and a pussy galore. We then ordered the cheese curds- they were so light and airy it was such a nice surprise! I was expecting something similar to a mozzarella stick but was super surprised to taste how airy it was. Then, we wanted more so we got the risotto balls- these weren't as good as I was wanting but nonetheless they did a great job, 3/5 on those tho. When I first entered on Monday evening, I liked the casual and inviting atmosphere with dim lighting and sports playing on the TV's at the bar. But it was confusing where and how to order. I just found someone in the back and sat myself at a table. From there, service was top notch, super friendly, gave me a recommendation for pizza, and refilled my water without me asking. I ordered the cinis appetizer, a sausage slice, and a pepperoni slice for dine in. The sauce and cheese on the pizza were minimal and not evenly spread throughout each slice, but the toppings and overall flavor were definitely good, the pepperonis crisp on top, and the pizza grandma style with crunchy edges. But even after being reheated and served to me, it tasted somewhat like it had been sitting out for a while, meaning not the freshest. The cinis on the other hand tasted freshly made, served hot, delicious and fluffy inside. I'm eager to try a freshly made whole pizza here. Ordered online takeout via Yelp before heading over there (for the first time, wasn't sure how this was going to pan out; no pun intended). When I got there, I went straight to the bar, to let them know I was there to pickup a takeout order. The server was very friendly and the place wasn't packed (great timing). The server shortly came out with my completed order. I was expecting to pay for it right then and there, but she said it was already taken care of. But the funny part is that I never input any credit card information when submitting the order online via Yelp. I'm going to check my Yelp account right after this, to see where my CC info is saved. But nonetheless the process was quick, easy and effortless. Even with takeout, the food was still holding well. From the salad, to the cinis, to the pizza. Loved the lemon dressing on the arugula. And I loved putting the salad onto the pizza as well. The pizza itself had crunchy edges but the crust also had a spongey bounce to it, which I liked. The cinis were the only items I wish had more flavor to. Without the spicy aioli, they were plain to me. That aioli elevated the flavor, but it still needed something to cut the fried/blandness to it. I couldn't finish it all, both cinis and pizza, which both tasted just as good, the next day, straight from the fridge, no microwave. Would like to try the food in person at the restaurant next time, to see if that changes anything, flavor profile wise.
