I really enjoyed my grandma's slice from Pie Punks. I was on a mission on Mission St. to find a killer slice, and that I did. I popped in and grabbed a seat at the bar. I like that you can sit down and order pizza by the slice. There were other pizza styles (NY and Detroit) available in whole pies, but the grandma style was the only slice option. I went with the pepperoni, and it was marvelous. The grandma's slice has a medium crust. It's not as thick as a Detroit style pie but not as thin as a NY slice. The pepperoni cups and spicy tomato sauce were a combo to die for. The crust was crispy but somehow airy and light. This is a really cool atmosphere with good tunes blasting on the speakers. The tables were pretty full when I arrived, but there were a few seats at the bar. Pie Punks seems like a popular hangout, and I can definitely see why. The pizza tenders behind the bar were very friendly and greeted me with menus and iced water immediately. read more

Our go-to neighborhood pizza place. I like that they have different pizza style options. Sometimes I want Detroit style, like in my college days (Go Blue!) but more often I'm in the mood for thin crust. And they are top notch for all their styles. My husband likes the Grandma pies, especially the Fredo. My regular is the thin crust peperoni. Detroit pies are big so we have to negotiate the toppings together. Good beer selection. read more

Pizza good & service is terrible. I went to get some late night pizza and our server(Asian dude) was very inattentive-- which i didnt mind because we knew it was busy and i wanted to catch up with my friend so i didnt mind that he didn't greet or take our order for 20 minutes. After getting out food with little service ( which we didn't mind because we were in good company) we paid in cash and left. The waiter chased us half a block down, out assuming we didn't pay without actually checking the check book that had cash in it. It's annoying when waiters are prejudice just because me and my friend were POC. Do better. read more

Yummy pizzas w/intriguing flavors. I thought i was not a big fan of ricotta but the caramelized onion compliments the ricotta nicely & changed my opinion on ricotta. The crust was the right amount of crunch. I did a take out order, but definitely want to come back for dine in next time. read more

First time I've been blown away by pizza in a very long time. Do not pass up Pie Punks.

I was in town for work and Pie Punks happens to be near the office. We came as a group of 5, super hungry and ready to eat. Luckily there was no wait. This place is a GEM. For drinks, I ordered the Henny Colada and it tasted a lot like the Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum at Disneyland Trader Sams! I just wish that they blended my drink a little bit more. The ice chunks were a tad too big still. Otherwise, tasted really good. For apps, we ordered the salt and pepper chicken and 2 Aviator salads. The chicken is boneless wings, fyi! I personally prefer bone in wings but the flavor was so good. The Aviator salad is basically Ceasar salad and a really freaking good one. You'll find anchovies so you know it's legit. The pizzas. Like WOW. We got a sausage Grandma, mauros Molto meat, and a pepperoni Detroit. I literally don't know if I can pick my favorite because they were all sooooo good. I stumbled across this place after going to the SF Moma. I saw the advertisement for the slice and a lager for 11$ so I was hooked. Tried the Gin and Tonic pretty good, had pineapple. Good beer selection on tap. Opted out for their grandma slices. Not as doughy as a traditional grandma slice which was great. Nice undercarriage on the dough was crispy and firm. All of the ingredients were fresh and quality. Also recommend the Cinis, they're like mushroom potato cheese balls. Service is excellent! Saw one of their patrons that came in and was overcharged from earlier. Helped them settle everything without batting an eye. Personable and inviting. We're almost regulars here at this point (seriously, we used to order once a week if not more), although we aren't really treated like it. I used to think the pizza here was good but I have a hard time supporting this place after a recent experience. The food is pretty good but something is rotten in the state of Denmark. First, there's very very few vegetarian pizza options besides cheese. You can add toppings but it's not really the same (the toppings just sit on top and aren't baked in). Wish they offered a few more because the grandma cheese pizza is getting a bit monotonous. Second, on our most recent visit - had a terrible experience. Ordered takeout like usual, and someone helped bring out our pizza and put it in the counter. While we were waiting for them to return and help us pay for it, my partner decided to take a peek at the pie to make sure half was vegetarian for me. Once he cracked open the box, he got yelled at by someone in the kitchen who wouldn't stop berating him about opening the box even after he nicely (and meekly said) that he was sure this was ours because it was handed to him by another server. My partner then said nothing and stood silently as this man continued to verbally accost him, and when the other server came back (while this man was still on a tirade) to help us with payment - this man was still going and the other server did nothing to stop them. Deeply uncool and uncomfortable. I was icked out by this whole experience - verbal abuse shouldn't be tolerated, and there seems to be a lot of it here. If this happens to customers, I can only imagine what happens to other staff. No apology, nothing offered to diffuse the situation. We paid and tried to leave as quickly as possible. Sad that while we used to eat here regularly, I don't plan on coming back unless I'm in the mood to be yelled at for no reason by someone (no thanks). read more

Now this place here... This is some solid pizza! I love the ambience of this place which is relaxing and just a cool place to hang out at. The service is great too as everyone is always very nice. Now as for the pizza... It's fantastic! I usually get a couple of slices and they have always been great. While at first I would get their sausage, I ended up getting their pepperoni more lately as it is just that good! The marinara sauce is flavorful and the crust is great too. These are also on the thinner side so I don't feel overly bloated afterwards (which I should mention isn't always a bad thing either! )I will say I have had some inconsistent bakes on the pizza though. A couple times the crust was baked a little too long so it was a bit too crispy for my palette. However the last time I went the crust was cooked PERFECTLY and I was one very happy eater! So if you're in the mood for pizza definitely check this spot out! read more

This spot is really good! We ordered the half bacon and half pepperoni Detroit style pizza. It came with 4 slices, which was the perfect amount of food for 2. We also ordered the fried cheese curds. I'm no cheese curd expert, but they were delicious. The batter wasn't too heavy and the cheese had a perfect chew to it. There was also a replay of the France vs Argentina final playing on the TV. THIS PIZZA PLACE!!!! We came into the restaurant randomly as it was our first day in SF. I genuinely was taken aback by how romantic the restaurant was and how nice every body who helped us was. I gotta give it to the Pie Punks, there are few better places to get a before game snack and cocktail near to the Ballpark. The Pies? The round pies are Classic San Francisco style: soured chewy dough, innovative (although familiar) toppings. Their take on a Detroit-Style Hawaiian shines: Spam, pickled peppers, pineapple, and light tomato sauce. Its salty, acidic, and satisfyingly crunchy. I can't wait to try more. We especially enjoyed the Onion Pie, with unctuous and slightly sweet onion jam cut by salty confit garlic and topped with daubs of Marscapone. The crust was nicely leopard-spotted, and when everything came together, it came together beautifully. The cocktails are great too, from riffs on old favorites to modern Tiki, I would have never known that a spiritous and spicy old fashioned could be such a great pairing with fried broccoli spiked with cherry peppers and a well-balanced aioli. Props to their killer beer selection and accessible natural wines. Ambiance is likewise fun, with records spinning, bartenders in tacky shirts, and a mounted deer head that's seen better days. Pie Punks really captures it's namesake. Not only is the atmosphere cool and punk-inspired, but the pizza is absolutely amazing. The Detroit style pizza is the star of the show here. The crust is thick and crispy, with an amazing tasty and perfectly melted cheese. The menu offers an eclectic choice of toppings, with standard fare like a delicious pepperoni pizza to a mustard pizza with spicy mustard, pastrami and sauerkraut. While they offer normal and grandma style pizzas, the Detroit style is easily a cut above their other offerings. For some extra secret tech, you can ask for a grandma or round style topping done Detroit style. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also really cool. The punk aesthetic oozes out of of the restaurant, and although some of it feels manicured to that extent, it feels like it has a lot more heart than something like the Square Pie Guys. The place feels like a great place to grab a pizza and hang out for drinks and the staff is very friendly. Their website is also hilarious, with mega 1990s geocities vibes with a punk don't care attitude. Overall, while it doesn't change pizza, it's some of the better pizza I've had and a great place to just get food. It impresses over Square Pie Guys with slightly better pizza, but much better ambiance. The Detroit style pizza is amazing, and the punk atmosphere of the restaurant is fun. read more

Me and my boyfriend had such a great experience at this place, so I felt compelled to give a review! First off, this place is super clean and you can tell that the owner/staff are happy to work. We were greeted by the bartender right away. He answered all of our questions and gave spot on recommendations. He also made my drink (little punk mai tai) perfectly! Perfect amount of sweet, sour, refreshing, fruity etc We ordered the aviator salad and grandma sausage pizza w/ added pepperoni. The salad dressing is house made and the anchovies are the perfect touch. It was by far the best "cesar" salad I have had, maybe the best in general. It was so good that we ordered another. The pizza was fantastic also. Just the right thickness in the crust, the sauce had a nice zing, cheese and sausage were so flavorful. I have never thought to put broccolini as a topping on pizza but it really works! I was craving Prince St pizza and this hit the spot. Oh also worth mentioning, bathroom was kept in pristine condition. Clean and smelled fresh! I feel like you can always tell if a place is well kept from the way they maintain their bathroom. We met the owner afterwards and he informed us that they have only been open for a few months. I was surprised because the place was so put together and the food is phenomenal; they know what they're doing! I hope they open an LA location soon We will definitely come back when we are in town next time though. Worth every penny (surprisingly affordable) and the trip! The deep dish pizza here is next level! The dough is very spongey and I'm not usually a fan of pizza crust like I'll eat it but only cause I don't wanna waste food. We got there and were able to get seated quickly. They had boards detailing the menu and we were ready to order when the server came around, but he told us he'd be right with us. We waited another 10-15 and finally were able to get the server's attention again, at which point he said he'd be right with us. After another 3-5, we walked out since we hadn't gotten anything other than water and no one had checked in. I understand waiting on a busy weekend, but this was far from OSL and the group that came on after us was able to get their to-go order before we left, even after they came in after us. Stumbled upon this discrete restaurant while walking around Rincon Hill and so glad we decided to try it! One of my new favorite pizza spots in the city. The music is great, cocktails are well priced and pizza is delicious. They have a variety of thin crust, new york style and Detroit style pizzas, something for everyone.
