Hello Everyone: This review is for the PIEbar in Strawberry, Arizona. This is our first time visiting. We ordered one each of the following to try several: Philly Steak Chicken Pot Pie Beef Picadillo Sweet: Strawberry/Rhubarb Dipping Sauce: Chimichurri Here are my thoughts on each: The Philly Steak empanada fell short on flavor and ingredients. When we cut the empanada in half, very little of the empanada had filling. Therefore, a bite tasted more like the empanada crust than a Philly Steak sandwich. When you think of a Philly Steak you think of: steak sliced thin, onion, green pepper and cheese and we did not see this array of ingredients in the empanada. We expected more spices and flavor and also more filling for the price. The Chicken Pot Pie was nice. The gravy was not too thick and I was concerned the dough would absorb most of it, but there was still enough to enjoy. The filling would benefit from salt or garlic salt and pepper, but at least this empanada had more filling than the Philly Steak. The Beef Picadillo is advertised as having: shaved beef, diced potato, green chilies, onion, cilantro, tomato and garlic. In the one we were served, there was a very small amount of beef, the diced potato (three pieces), we did not detect any chilies, onion, cilantro, tomato or garlic. One should be able to see cilantro and tomato and even the chilies, but they were not there. We cut it open and looked. Also, we expected i to be a little spicy considering the ingredients. But, again, the overall flavor fell flat. The strawberry/rhubarb was recommended by PIEbar staff because it was seasonal, so we purchased one of these for our sweet empanada. This empanada shell was full of filling (as we would have expected the others to be), but considering the fruits involved there was little flavor. I saw another reviewer mention the lack of flavor, but I did not want to believe sweet strawberries with tart rhubarb could be "flavorless", but I have to agree, this filling would benefit from a little sugar and/or cinnamon inside the filling. The chimichurri sauce is spicy as advertised. This item hit the mark. We could distinguish all the ingredients in the sauce and it is 'spicy', so for those of you who don't care for heat with your food, we recommend you try a different sauce to dip your savory empanadas into. We brought the order to our cabin (three minutes away) to reheat them in the oven because the moisture from the empanadas was coming through the deli bag quickly, leading me to believe they may have been slightly undercooked and we did not want to take a chance on our vacation of getting sick. NOTE: Other reviewers who posed recently commented on "less filling" than normal which is what we experienced this week. I don't know what they are doing differently, but obviously the regulars feel something has changed. The size of the empanadas would be for a "lite" breakfast or lunch (they are not large). Each one serves one person comfortably (not large enough to share). There is seating outside. This is a little boutique stand of food and when they sell out, they sell out. I think if you adjust your expectations accordingly, you won't be disappointed. The concept is unique and something different than your typical sandwich for lunch.
Super cute environment and good vibes, we went in the morning around 9 am August 2026 perfect weather to sit outside. we tried five empanadas I think Philly cheesecake is my favorite. We also tried all the sauces and they were all bomb. Definitely would recommend and worth the hype. Service was also great, one cute girl working at the front desk super helpful. And saw the rest of the guys making everything fresh and handmade. Bathrooms were clean, we did come around open. Would recommend and would come back.
Great place to stop and enjoy an empanada and hand-pies. Hole-in-the-wall place that is worth getting to. Staff is super friendly, food delicious. Grab-n-go, or enjoy patio seating under the pines & oaks. (Oh. And be sure to get your own and not share... You will want to enjoy it all to yourself.)
They had so many selections from savory and sweet! We had to stop as we drove by, It was quick and delicious! Outdoor seating for a quick serve counter. Plenty of seating, limited parking.
We had seen this restaurant on Arizona Highways on PBS. As we were in the area, we decided to have lunch there. It's a carryout place, but there are plenty of tables outside. We had five empanadas. Lemon, mac & cheese with bacon, chorizo and bean, ham and cheese and chili pork. All were excellent, but the mac & cheese seemed to be lacking bacon. It is fairly expensive but quite filling. The people inside were super nice and we enjoyed chatting with them. If you are in the area, we recommend giving it a try.
We saw the line out the door and figured PIEbar must be good. It is! The line was long but it moved--it was about a 15 minute process. There's ample outdoor seating. We each got a savory empanada and a desert empanada. The artichoke dip was a big hit. I was a bit less enthusiastic about the bean and cheese but appreciate there were vegetarian and vegan options. All the dessert ones were wonderful. The crust is so light and just a little crispy. I was starving by the time we got here late on the afternoon and probably should have ordered 2 savory. I left hungry, but would absolutely go back and order more.
They only really do one thing but they do it VERY WELL. Got the chicken pot pie (hot) and key lime pie (cold) empanadas. Throughly enjoyed both. The perfect quick stop after camping / hiking. The place itself is so cute, very small building put plenty of outdoor seating, with lots of shade available and clean bathrooms. Would definitely recommend making this stop if you are in the area! I love empanadas and it is so hard to find a place that does good FRESH ones like this.
This is a MUST visit in Strawberry! Being directly off of Hwy 260, you cannot miss it driving through town. It's absolutely worth the stop. The menu is huge, so there is an option for everyone! Savory and sweet options depending on the time of day. They are listed on the menu starting with the most popular and going down the list. We tried a bunch of different options and honestly enjoyed them all. Our favorites were the Green Chile Pork, Loaded Baked Potato, Philly Cheese, and the Chicken Pot Pie. We also really liked their breakfast ones too. The Panda one on the sweet options is delicious! Service is excellent here. Very quick and super helpful. They give perfect recs about what pairs with what sauce when ordering. They have a fridge of drinks, beers, and cocktails as well. Pies are available to buy in whole also. Take this as your sign to stop at PIEbar. Sit outside, enjoy some fantastic food and weather, and get back on the road. You will not be disappointed!
We decided to take a detour to enjoy Strawberry on the way up to Flagstaff. So glad we did! It added an hour and a half onto the drive up but was so worth it. We got here around 1:30 pm just in time for some lunch. As I turned my head to the right, asking what we should eat, we all said "PIEbar" together. Jinx. It's just the perfect little cafe. It's bright yellow so it catches your eye. A line of people waiting to order at the front door was moving fast. Parking is right off the highway and in front of the restaurant. There's also additional parking behind the restaurant down the hill. Stairs come straight up to patio from the lower lot. Beautiful patios surround the restaurant with shaded tables. Gorgeous Ivy covered pines and oaks cover the patio areas. Two gender neutral restrooms available in a separate small building next to the restaurant. I love how the menus are written and posted everywhere and list empanadas in order by popularity. Another thing I appreciate is the size of the empanada and the price. They are small enough and inexpensive enough that you could get a snack but if you wanted to get, let's say five or six because you're hungry for lunch it is still affordable. Service was so friendly and great as we ordered at the counter. I couldn't believe how quickly the ordering process went and we were handed a bag of warm empanadas before we knew it. We ordered: - 1 SAVORY Empanada - The Mountain Man Empanada - sausage, potato gravy, cheese (most popular) - 1 SAVORY Empanada - Chicken Pot Pie empanada (second most popular) - 1 SAVORY Empanada - Picadillo Beef Empanada - shaved beef, diced potato, green chiles, onion, cilantro, tomato, garlic (I got this one and it's #1 in my book) - 1 SAVORY Empanada - Artichoke Dip Empanada (meatless) daughter said this was very good - 1 SWEET Empanada - Apple/Dulce de Leche - warm and yummy! We all split this for dessert. The pastry / shell is very tasty and doesn't taste like some I've tried other places with an artificial taste. It's flaky and filling. Handheld size. Perfect for taking on the go. Each empanada placed in a waxed paper sleeve. They've got a few different very tasty dipping sauces as well. We tried the Creamy Green Chile & Pepita Sauce (mild) and the Chipotle Lime Aioli (mild). Very good flavors and fresh.
this place lives up to the hype. The line looks intimidating, but it doesn't take that long at all. It was hard to pick just a few items off the menu, but I was happy with my selections which were the chicken pot pie in the bean and cheese empanada. The buffalo chicken one was also really good. I think they should try to make a chicken tikka one eventually. I'd come back for that.
Super Cool outside eating area! They even have hoola hoops :-) The chorizo pie tasted excellent - next time get one plus one "Mountain Man" since they fit in your palm :-) Pretty Speedy! Great Service - I forgot to ask for Military Discount, so check :-)
The best empanadas ever!!!!! (Or that I have tasted). Both the savory and sweet were delicious. My favorite is the cherry empanada! Lines can be long and average wait time is 20ish minutes. I made the mistake of not ordering all at once and because of that I had to line up twice! we brought home a few and its still good when reheated using the airfryer!
Recommend: Yes. Definitely a spot to check out in Strawberry, AZ. This place is definitely popular with people from outside of town. Food: Empanadas were good! We got The Mountain Man, the Picadillo Beef, and Philly Cheese Steak. My favorite was the Philly cheese steak. Flavor 4/5. Service: quick, nice, and they have restrooms for public to use. My boyfriend and I were driving down from flagstaff and found this place. They were decent size and you can get a sauce with it for 85cents. Everything tasted great but I do have to say the Philly cheese steak one was my favorite. It had a lot of the pepper taste. The others were great as well but wasn't as flavorful as the Philly cheese steak. I still think this is a great place to stop and check out. They also have pies but we didn't get any since we just wanted a small snack.

Only the best baked empanadas in all of Arizona. We tried three savory and two sweet and we just cannot decide which is best because they were all amazing. I will give a special shout out to the Mountain Man which is filled with sausage, potatoes, gravy, and cheese - I mean, come on, what genius thought of that?! We were also lucky enough to be here when rhubarb is in season so we were able to enjoy the strawberry rhubarb filled one and OMG it was incredible. It's a tiny spot, but they have plentiful outdoor searing mostly in the shade. You absolutely cannot drive through Strawberry without stopping here. Even if the line is long, the service is fast so just trust me and get in line! read more
Really delicious fresh empanadas and quick service. If you are going there for the breakfast empanadas, there is a limited amount and they can go fast depending on the day so get there close to when they open to secure one. Hope to try one next time I am in the area. read more
Worth the hype. The Mountain Man & Chicken "Pot Pie" are a must. It was fun getting a bunch and sharing them all. Dipping sauces were good & enhanced the flavors of the pies. Parking was tight but with patience we got a spot. Employees were friendly & quick to get our order ready. Plenty of tables to sit & enjoy your pies. Facilities were clean. Definitely a place to check out in Strawberry. read more

I've driven by here many times and I finally stopped by this weekend while I was camping on the rim! It was so good that I regret never stopping here before. There was a long line to order, but it moves super quickly as the empanadas are already ready to go. There's lots of tables outside to choose from. I got a chicken pot empanada and a veggie one for $12. Both of them were delicious, had a good amount of filling, and the pastry was perfectly cooked! A few family members and I were on a road trip in AZ. As we were driving along the road through Payson AZ onto Strawberry AZ a lovely town . We stopped at the PIEbar ,known for their large variety of empanadas. I ordered the Piccadillo (beef, green chili, etc ) and chimichurri sauce and for dessert the strawberry and cream empanada. PIEbar is a counter store (walk up and order) and to the right is a seating area for customers to sit . My family and I ordered to go . As a resident of Los Angeles, I felt the empanada prices were reasonable for the size and quality of ingredients for the PIEbar . The empanadas I ordered were very good and fresh . Service was good , the employees were nice . I would definitely recommend. There is a large variety of empanadas for every type of palate or preference. read more
I don't know what the fuss about this place is. Very boring and overpriced empanadas. Maybe we came on a bad day, got old product. I should have asked what if anything had just come out the oven. Got the cheese and ham, boring. And the Dulce de leche Apple - nothing was dulce about it. The pastry was bland. Very underwhelming. read more

You must stop here! The empanadas are absolutely amazing! We had the panda, blueberry, green chili, and mountain man and they were hands down, the best empanadas this side of Argentina! I will definitely drive from Flagstaff just to try more flavors! The service was fast and friendly. Plus, it's in a really cool location and has a great vibe. read more
I loved that their pies are in empanada form! Easier to eat! We tried their Mountain Man, Chicken Pot Pie, Lemon Bar, and Strawberries & Cream. The Mountain Man was full of flavor and the chicken pot pie was bland in comparison (but I love chicken pot pie and it tasted like a regular chicken pot pie). The lemon bar tasted like a lemon filled donut but the strawberries and cream were my favorite sweet empanada. We also had the icing dip but the empanadas were fine without it. The line was a bit long but service moved quickly. They only have outdoor seating. read more

We were camping up the road and made a trip to town for ice. Stopped here and ordered three separate times. The ladies helping us were so friendly and helpful (chimicuri sauce) and the different pies. Omg I'm still wishing I'd eaten like three more of those beef picodilla ones. I'll have to make a special trip. Well worth it. The outside patios are great and dog friendly (a must for us this trip). Stop here. Eat lots. Closed on Wednesday no pics of food because I ate it too quick. read more

I first visited Piebar a few years ago, and was happy. The pastry crust is good. But this year (April 2025) when I stopped in and got the cherry, there were not actually that many cherries within. Certainly the shell could easily hold 6 cherries yet I think maybe I came across two? Too much cornstarch cherry filler and not sufficient cherries. Sadly I will need to score a mediocre on this visit. read more

So glad I decided to stop and get a quick snack for the road. I seem to keep driving by here when they're closed and finally caught them when they were open. I ordered 3 empanadas: the mountain man (fav), artichoke dip and peach. They are all baked to perfection and the fillings were so delicious. I also got a side of frosting for the peach empanada. The line moved very quickly and the weather was beautiful outside so I ate in the outside seating. There is no indoor seating. Stop by when you're in the area. read more
I am half hearted with my experience at this place. A coworker recommended this place.They have a wide selection of empanadas and pies. I find their chimichurri, too salty. My son found a strand of hair in his ham and cheese empanada. Which grossed me out, so much! Although they gave him a new one, I kinda question the quality and standard of their food preparation. The girl at the counter doesn't seem to enjoy her job and is not very accommodating. No dining area, only outside seating. Empanada is close to $5 a piece. I'm not a huge fan. read more

PIEbar is a must when in Strawberry! Hard to miss the large, fun, quirky sign or the bright red and yellow building when pulling in to Strawberry. There's ample parking and a decent amount of outdoor only seating. There's been a line both times I've gone, which is usually a positive sign. The staff is friendly, fast, and efficient which keeps the line moving quickly! Between my two visits, I tried a handful of different empanada flavors from savory to sweet. All of their empanadas are incredible. A few standouts are the breakfast empanada, veggie gallimaufry, panda, and lemon bar. Can't forget about the sauce! The spicy chimichurri complements all the savory ones really well and the icing enhances all the sweet ones. The empanadas are made in house and you can really taste the quality. They've perfected the dough and filling ratio. Not too much of one, just enough. The breakfast empanadas sell out quickly, so come early to try them! read more

Okay! The empanadas at this spot are good! A little spicy, but that's not a bad thing. The PIEbar is an outdoor restaurant, you order your food and sit outside. Plenty of seating and dog friendly! They've also got alcoholic drinks which was a nice surprise. One bathroom for customers as well. The empanadas are hot, fresh and savory(or sweet!) the pineapple empanada and Picadillo beef were amazing! Will definitely always stop here when I'm in the area! read more
Still one of our favorite places to go when we're visiting Rim Country! This trip, we tried the cherry, panda, and Buffalo chicken empanadas. The Buffalo chicken was SO good. A lot better than we expected. The cherry was good as well, but I think I would've liked it better cold. We tried the panda later that evening when we got home. It's a mix of Oreo and cream. Not sure why it's the least popular out of the sweet empanadas because it was quite tasty! The only thing that threw us off was the strong almond flavor. I would've liked it better if the cream weren't almond - but it was still really good!! It's always so hard to make a decision when we come here, and having tried three new ones this trip...it's going to be even more hard to decide what we want next time! read more

Go for the drive out of the sweltering PHX Heat. Go for a fun food destination spot. BUT GO for all the pie!! Stay for the ambience of the outdoor seating and great service from the hard working staff making our hand pie dreams a reality!!! Out of all the tasty options we tried. I must say THE Green chili is the best!!!! And get the Dulce for dessert! You will drive back to the valley contemplating what to try next, and regretting not getting more to go at this quant and lovely establishment. read more

Happy Independence Day! There's nothing more American than apple pie. Okay, so they actually sell empanadas here but stop poking holes into my review, haha! My friends and I popped on over after doing the Water Wheel Falls Hiking Trail in Payson for some good eats. Honestly, if it wasn't for the promise of freshly baked empanadas, I wouldn't have gone on the hike. It was above 100°F! Who wants to go hiking in that heat?! This is everything I bought for myself and myself alone because I'm a glutton: Ashland CA Hard Seltzer in rainbow sherbert, $6: Self-described as an, "independent craft hard seltzer based in San Diego, CA" I gotta admit that I wasn't a fan. People who know me know I love a hard seltzer and maybe I was experiencing dehydration but that was just not it for me. I chugged half a can before pushing it aside in favor of that delicious cold H20 I had with me. Mountain Man, $5.35: Sausage, potato, gravy, and cheese! I mean, how can you really go wrong with this savory delicious combo? They also have a Mountain Mamma if you want to devour the couple. Green Chili Pork, $5.85: Juicy, succulent, and tasty. As much as I love green chili, I find myself gravitating towards the Mountain Man more. Apple with Dulce de Leche, $5.50: You gotta get yourself dessert, right? I was too full by the time I got to this one so I took it home to reheat in the air fryer. It was good! It's not as melty and gooey as I would have liked but the flavors were there and they were singing like a blue jay! I will say that after having a bite of my friend's Chicken Pot Pie, I think that was truly my favorite bite of this excursion. WOW! Note to self: Bring my handy dandy Yelp cooler, buy 24 chicken pot pies, and bring them back in town to take up freezer space like the gremlin you are. read more

We still come here for the same artichoke empanada years later. It's just so good. The drive to Strawberry is stunning and you're sure to catch an elk or deer along the way. They are always cleaning and keeping things tidy. Definitely recommend this stop! read more
Stopped by PIEbar while driving back to Phoenix. I thought it was good, but not amazing. The line was long and I think it is fairly expensive for what you get. There's plenty of tables outside which was nice. I wish they had more than one bathroom though, since there was a line. If I am in Strawberry, I might stop by if there's no line. read more

Visiting Payson for a few days and had to drop by this pie shop many people talk about. Strawberry was 30 mins away from payson. Huge selections including some fun summer pies. Now they sell whole pies.. as people have told me they only sell hand pies. The pies had a very crunchy crust and hot out of the oven. The filling was as expected and appreciate it not being overly sweet. Just right. Had our dog and saw many dogs on the 3 different patio locations. Kept clean. Restrooms were clean. Overall, recommend visiting this pie shop! read more
I was told that I had to check this place out when I got to Strawberry. I ordered a breakfast empananda, a lemon bar, and the panda. I went with the dipping sauce recommended. I had the breakfast one with spicy dipping sauce. It made me rethink all my spicy life choices. I understand there are different levels to heat, but I had never had a spicy sauce put me in my place before. Don't do what I did and go in with a normal dip without tasting it beforehand. You ONLY need a tiny dip of the spicy sauce. The quiche Lorraine option is so good that I should have gotten two. read more
What. A. Gem. This place has been on my Yelp bucketlist for sometime and I am SO excited I finally got a chance to check it out. Adorably quaint, PIEbar is located right on Highway 87. It is hard to miss with their awesome sign! There is ample parking and though they do not have any indoor seating, they have plentiful of lovely outdoor seating. You can tell this place is a local and tourist fave. With a consistent flow of rotating guests and their setup, everyone wants a piece! They have a large menu on the outside to scope out and organize it by favorites (Top to bottom). They offer savory and sweet empanadas, along with mini pies or full-size pies and a drink cooler with a plentiful of options from canned cocktails to pop. We were hoping to get the breakfast empanadas, but they were sold out at around 11. Their menu specifies available during morning, so I imagine they make a batch and sell them to they are gone, because they are constantly making fresh batches of the rest of them! We opted for a Buffalo Chicken, Bean + Cheese, Veggie and Cherry one. They have an awesome list of sauces that range from .55 to .85 cents and make suggestions based on your order, We paired the above with chipotle lime aioli, pepita and icing for our sweet empanada. They bag them up right there for you, pair the sauces accordingly and give you a paper bag full of your goodies and you are on your way! I do not think I could have eaten them any faster! They were so good, I opted to get another round for dinner! Hah! The second round consisted of Chicken Pot Pie, Spinach Artichoke, Philly Steak, Green Chili and Apple and I got one side of their spicy chimichurri sauce (It was delicious, but had a great kick)! They had a few in the oven on this order, so brought them out to us fresh and hot about 10 minutes after we ordered. Each empanada ranges from 5-6 dollars roughly. I would say two would be appropriate for a serving, but depending on your appetite that's a starting point. They were such a treat and I truly look forward to returning and trying their other flavors and DEFINITELY snagging some breaky ones! read more
To-go empanadas, coffee and pies. They have a selection of both sweet and savory. We got the mountain man (sausage, potatoes and cheese, their most popular), picadillo (ground beef, chiles, potatoes) and the best one was the green chili pork! Huge juicy cuts of pork in a savory green chili sauce. Outer shells were crispy yet tender flaky pie crusts. All of them very tasty. We tried the spicy habanero dipping sauce, spicy but not too hot, great flavor that complimented the empanadas perfectly. Great spot, picnic table seating outside. Fast pick up. Card accepted. This may be the least informative review I've ever written, and to be honest, I wasn't planning to leave a review, but here's the deal: I can't remember exactly what I ordered, I can't recall the specific nuances of each empanada BUT a half a year later, I'm still thinking about this place. WHY? Both the 3 savory empanadas and 3 sweet empanadas on 2 separate occasional were the most satisfying thing I ate in Strawberry. So satisfying that I made my fiancé make a trip to pick up a few additional empanadas on our way out. The ladies were fabulous, they know our family friends (who have a weekend house out there) and their kids by name, and the vibe felt incredibly homey. And although this spot is not a looker, it certainly has charm...and most importantly, from the flavors, to the friendliness, you'll be craving theses little mpockets for the next few days! read more

The Empanadas are so very good. Had the pineapple upside down and the breakfast empanada with the spicy chimichiri. Super spicy but my husband loved it. Both were exceptional. Very friendly people. read more
