This is my guy's favorite little pizza spot and honestly... I can see why. Just make sure you bring cash. Food: 9/10 The pizza was delicious. You pick your slice and they throw it back into the big oven to heat it up to your preferred level of crispiness. I wanted mine a little crispier and they nailed it. I went with a classic pepperoni slice and it was so flavorful. Nice and hot with that perfect crispy bite without being overcooked or hard. Just really solid pizza. Service: 8/10 The guy helping us seemed like he probably owns or runs the place. Friendly, chatty, and attentive. It's more of an order and go type spot, so there's not a ton of interaction, but the vibe was good and everything moved quickly. Ambiance: 6/10 The vibe is very old school mom and pop pizza shop. Nothing fancy or trendy, but honestly that's kind of the charm. You're there for really good pizza, not some over the top aesthetic, and I can appreciate that. We will absolutely be back. First off! I always end every sentence with an exclamation mark! People ask, "even with questions!" Yes! Every sentence! I have eaten here and it was a memorable experience! As it goes, I came here after a work event where alcohol was consumed as though our bonuses were tied to the hangover! I was Johnny Depp drunk, and needed some pizza to cushion my inevitable collapse! I ordered a cheese slice and asked the young lady serving me if they had any dried oregano to sprinkle on top, and she took one of her dreadlocks and twisted it! I'm embarrassed to say that this was my very first time trying Pieces Pizza by the Slice. It's been on our list for a long time and it's definitely a Sacramento institution at this point. It is cash only and is a bit hidden with minimal signage next to Bombay. They're know most for their late night weekend slices, perfect if you're looking for something after a night of fun. For us though, it was a mid-day lunch on a Saturday after exploring the Midtown Farmers market. We were taking our dog on a walk through the city and were lured in by the amazing smell of fresh baked pizza. I turned to my husband and asked if he had cash, and just like that our lunch plans were made. The person working was so nice, they went over the slice options with us and while B went with classic pepperoni and cheese, I opted for a pesto slice with veggies, including broccoli- YUM! They heat them up again for you and since we opted to dine in we even got the nice wicker plate holder to go under our paper plates. I was actually really surprised that they took this extra step. The pizza was great, just what we were looking for with pizza by the slice. When they rewarm it the cheese is gooey and you get those nice cheese pulls and the bottom of the crust was nice a crispy which helps hold the piece, but also adds to the texture experience with melty cheese, soft dough on top and then the crunch as you bite through. We paired our slices with Shasta, the Tiki Punch is my favorite, and we had a great lunch at one of their outdoor tables. We were both full afterward, and appreciated that they had sauce even under the crust, which made it a delicious experience until the very last bite. Absolutely would stop by again! read more

Some friends have been raving about Pieces Pizzas by the Slice for months, so when we were out late one night, they finally decided to take us here for a slice--and I was SO excited because I'd been craving pizza for weeks. Walking in, the inside is simple and basic but it didn't matter too much because what mattered most was their pizza slices! This spot is cash only, and it's located on a busy street surrounded by bars, making it the perfect stop after a night of bar hopping. There were four of us, and we each ordered one slice: pesto, cheese, pepperoni, and broccoli & pepperoni. I can confidently say that from the very first bite, my pizza cravings were more than satisfied. I went with the classic cheese slice, and it did not disappoint. The dough was soft but not too soft, the cheese was perfectly balanced with a nice cheese pull in every bite, and my absolute favorite part was the crust. It's basically stuffed from how the crust is formed and being part of the main part of the pizza! I usually don't eat pizza crust, but this one actually had me eat my entire slice from my first bite of the main part of the pizza to the last bite from the crust. Our friends come here so often that the workers actually recognize them now--so my husband and I will probably be doing the same since we live in the area! One of the workers, Shea, was the one who helped us out with getting our pizza orders in. He made sure that our pizzas were cooked to perfection. He's AWESOME! I was on a mission to find the best pizza by the slice on the grid. This was my fourth stop. I had no idea this place existed, but it feels like a good location to capture the nightlife crowd. The slice was on the expensive side and was cash only. The guy working was very friendly and added fresh garlic to my cheese slice, which I loved. It was an extremely cheesy slice, but the cheese lacked that real full-fat mozzarella flavor that I prefer. The sauce was bland and needed more seasoning. The bottom was heavily charred and crispy, which I liked. The crust was stuffed, which was a fun surprise. The inside was clean, and it gave me a real New York slice experience I haven't had in Sacramento since being in New York. Here they do not take Apple Pay. You do have to use cash. I ended up going out of town to a more expensive area and had pizza that was far better for less of a price. The pizza here gave me acid reflux. It's super greasy and it's not greasy in a good way. I wanted to give this place a good review because I have been dying to try it and I was really wanting to do a great review for the place I'm all about trying to show love for Ca-Sacramento and anything that is in our little small areas living downtown. I never caught this place when it was open. I would say that the service was mid. The gentleman was upset because my husband didn't have cash on him so the attitude changed some however, when my husband ordered my piece of slice, there was one that I had told him to go ahead and get however I came inside after waiting for him to go across the street to use ATM, we don't partner with so we had to pay a fee on both sides and I saw a different slice, and I wanted to get that the guy had kind of an attitude about it and it just made you feel uncomfortable. I myself will not come back here. The price alone with the quality of the Pizza is just not there for me and I have ate out a lot of pizza places, but compared this one to Pizza my heart out by Santa Cruz. I just cannot fathom the idea of the price and the quality. I am really saddened to give this review. While visiting Sacramento, I decided to stop by Pieces for lunch. The location was a bit hard to find if not for Google Maps, since the outdoor sign wasn't very obvious when driving by. Well, I can't believe I'm reviewing this place. Based on how it looks on the outside, I never bothered to venture in. However, I was very hungry today and was looking for something quick. On a trip to New York a few years back I tried a dozen or more pizza by the slice places throughout Manhattan. I grabbed a couple of slices here. The pizza was decent nothing great, nothing bad. It had a thicker crust with plenty of cheese, especially on the pesto slice, which had decent flavor. The gentleman working there offered to add garlic, which was a nice touch and gave the pizza an extra boost. The service was friendly, but there are a couple of downsides. For one, they only accept cash, and the slices are quite pricey. I ended up paying close to $20 for two slices and some ranch, which seems a bit high for what you get. My husband took me here when he saw a video about it on tik tok. We came here on a Friday evening and the place was empty. The guy at the counter greeted us and he was super friendly and welcoming- wish I knew what his name was. My husband got the pepperoni, the jalapeño and Canadian bacon, and I got the pesto pizza. This is truly the best pizza in Sac. The owner, Jackie, is an absolute delight and takes a ton of pride in her food and it really, really shows. We went our second time tonight and had a different person helping us and I can tell you that the amazing service doesn't just stop with Jackie- when we were done with our food he brought out brownie bites on the house. I noticed a couple reviews commenting on the price- trust me when I say that it is beyond fair for the quality and the HEFT of the slice. I really don't want to be that person- but I have tried calling several times and immediately get sent to voicemail. My friends and I came here on a Saturday night hoping to sober up after a few drinks. There were four of us and we ordered two slices each. Prices weren't listed anywhere and so we thought- you know- maybe $5-7 a slice. It ended up being $10 per slice and cash only. Alright so... $80 + tip for 8 slices of pizza (I only bring that up because of the next part) Here's the worst part- the guy making our pizza was incredibly nice and friendly. You could tell he was genuinely good guy and a hard working employee who had a rough past. But- he would cover his mouth with his hand (no gloves) handle the pizza, and then serve it to us. He did that to all 8 slices. Hand over his mouth, talking into it, then handling our food with the same hand. Yes we paid, said thank you, walked out and threw away almost $100 of pizza. What were we supposed to do? After trying to call and resolve this privately, I feel as if I have to leave a review. No we won't be going back- it was disappointing and unhygienic. read more

Tried this place for the first time today. The pizzas all looked good and we ordered slices of the pesto, the pepperoni and the pepperoni/sausage. The toppings were very fresh tasting. The pesto has such a good flavor and the meats weren't greasy. Slices were topped with minced garlic (by request). But what made the slices was the crust! It was on the thin side and usually crust tastes rather bland to me. But this was very different - so good. It was also baked to the perfect crunch. Crispy on the outside and soft on the center. The owner was also extremely personable, funny and friendly. She came to the table and we talked awhile. We're from out of town but would definitely drive to Sacramento just to go back to Pieces.
