Looking for some good food while out of town in Reno and found Pine State Biscuits Reno. WOW what a find!!! Was only in town two days, the food was so good, had to come back on the second day for more. This could be a reason all by itself to return to Reno. I had the Shrimp and Grits the first day and my wife had the Chatfield. Even though my Shrimp and Grits were great I definitely had plate envy for my wife's dish. Going back the second day, yes I had the Chatfield and my wife had the Reggie. Again, everything was so good! The staff and service is top notch also. Can't wait to come back. Grabbed a late breakfast/early lunch on Sunday. This was our first time at pine state and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Full disclosure, I was severely hungover from the day before and hadn't eaten since five or so the previous day. Not sure if that played into my enjoyment or not. There was approximately a 30 minute wait. This is an order first joint so don't expect to get waited on hand and foot. I had the Reggie which was a chicken biscuit with cheese that's covered in your choice of sausage or mushroom gravy. I went sausage. To drink I had a bloody marry which I made a double. My wife had the Reggie with an egg, which is pretty self explanatory. She has a coffee to drink and we also ordered a cookie batter pop tart. The place seemed pretty streamline, I had my bloody Marry in hand before I finished paying. The water and coffee come from a self serve station across from the cashier station. We took a seat at the first available table. Right after we sat down our pop tart came out and it was flaky and absolutely delicious. No sooner than we finished it or chicken biscuit came out. The biscuit was flaky and the chicken was juicy. The chicken itself has a little spice to it which I liked. I told my wife that the place was polished like a chain restaurant and sure it enough it is a small chain that comes from Portland. While we sat we saw quite a few things come out of the kitchen that we will try on our return trip. The restaurant is very much DIY. However, a lot of the other yelp comments made me believe there was gonna be vegan biscuits and gravy but after going there one of the nice employees let me know that there is butter and heavy cream in both the biscuits and in the vegetarian gravy - so it is NOT vegan. BUT! They did point me towards some really yummy hash browns with mushrooms and caramelized onions and I enjoyed that! So this place DOES have some vegan options, but it is not the biscuits and gravy... maybe one day that'll change! :) The person I went with though got a non-vegetarian dish with the biscuit and gravy and he really enjoyed it! So we found this place on Yelp and it had great ratings so we decided to give it a shot. We pull up around 11am and there's a line out the door. Not sure if this is the norm but as restaurant owners ourselves there's 2 thoughts that come to mind.1) Damn the food must be good 2) Service must be slow. For us seeing a line is a good thing...(in a way). It started to lightly rain so everyone outside was basically screwed. By the looks of the place we thought it was a sit down and have a waiter/waitress take your order place. But this is an order yourself, seat self, bus your table yourself and get everything yourself place. If you expect to be waited on that's not happening here other than when your food comes to the table for drop off. We waited 40 minutes in line before we reached the cashier. The nice and friendly cashier made the wait less painful. After that we had to find an available table that would accommodate 5 people. The place was busy and no one seemed like they were moving for a while. We got lucky and got the only big table there was. We were waiting so long for our food, my son started crying because he was hungry, and he's 9 btw, he doesn't cry or whine , he quietly started shedding tears, so I went to the counter and asked who ever was behind the counter if they had bread or something to give him. From the time we sat we waited 50... yes...FIFTY minutes before we got our order! That's on top of the 40 minutes in line. Was it worth the wait?... unfortunately not. Idk if there was only one cook, but the wait time to push orders out was insane. Hubby ordered biscuits and gravy, it was cold when he got it, there's no point in having them take it back who knows how long that would've taken. Daughter ordered the Veggie Reggie, it was ok. Boys got Miesley? The fried chicken, it was ok, and just over easy eggs on a biscuit for the little one. I ordered shrimp and grits, it's was way too thick for my liking it was kinda like dried out oatmeal that looked like mashed potatoes lol. The sauce/gravy was super salty, you can get instant high blood pressure. Also had a lot of black pepper, A LOT, because it gave a kick back like why??? I really wanted to love this meal and was looking forward to it. But it's a no from me. Tip: Make sure you order everything you want at the register, because if the line is anything like the line we waited in, you can fohgetta bout it! If you want a place where you can chit chat all day with your friends and you ain't got nothin' but time this is your place! My best friend's wife's family is from Reno. All I heard about eating in Reno is you have to goto PSB. So, I finally took a road trip to Reno to collect a sports bet and we took some people to enjoy PSB for breakfast. I was so excited to go here, because there is nothing I love more than a great biscuit...light, fluffy with a flaky and just so slightly crispy top crust brushed with butter. I ordered the standard biscuit with sausage gravy...no other stuff, just the basics. I also ordered eggs (listed as "fried any style" on the menu) sunny side up and was told they only do either over easy, over medium or over well done eggs. Uh...ok. Then the person at the counter asked if I wanted the eggs on the side or on my biscuit. I said, "on my biscuit, please!" So, after we sat, our pop tarts came first (said berry and corn, but nobody found a hint of corn) and my eggs on a small plate. Hmm...that is not on top of my biscuit. Then, they brought out my biscuit on a "hot" plate. It was really a luke warm plate. The gravy was also luke warm. Super bummed. I was so excited to come here, and I get luke warm gravy? Ok, I will still try to enjoy my dish. But, sadly, the biscuit...it was not hot and soft and spongy. No structure, no finesse, no love. It really bummed me out. I love biscuits, especially good biscuits, but mine reminded me of a Bisquik biscuit. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone, except for maybe an arch nemesis.
