Pine tree cafe - Highly recommend this place! We came here twice during our short 4-day trip in Big Island because their food was so good and nothing beats their price in this area! Their spicy garlic chicken is flavorful and fried to perfect crisp. It was so good we got it both times. Their poke is so fresh and goes well with plain rice.... especially since it's about half the cost of what you'd get elsewhere. You don't need to worry about where to go for lunch if you're nearby Kona. I'd give it more like 4.5-4.75 stars since it took so long to get food, but hey - at least you know they make it fresh! read more

There was sooo much food to choose from! Me and my family of 6 got a lot and we ended up quite full. however, the food was pretty expensive but okay for being so close to the airport. we spent 72 dollars for the meal in total. The building was clean and nice. You can make combos with two different items on the menu which ends up being a really good deal! The loco mocos were decent, but not the best. The chili bowl, through listed under loco mocos on the menu, was just chili over rice which could be considered as a loco mocos but didn't have an egg. it tasted really good though! The spicy garlic chicken was really good at first, but later ended up tasting pretty oily. It did come with a lot of food though and generally tasted really nice. the ox tail soup was really good. it was flavorful and the beef was soft and tender. We had more food as well but generally the food was really good and very filling. The service was a little on the slow side and the food was a bit expensive. And because of that when we came to the Big Island to visit and my family wanted to eat here, I kinda hesitated because of my first experience. Great! Always a favorite. But the Katsu Dip used to be better a few years ago. They started using a cheaper cut if meat. It's still perfect up at Ks kitchen though. Also lately the prices have been going way to high. I don't go as much, but if they keep raising the prices I won't be going at all. I have no idea how I've never written a review for this place. we've been coming in for years. I've never order anything I didn't like. I don't eat meat for health reason, but I love their beef stew & they have, graciously & without complaint or giving me a weird look, let me order it every time with the caveat of "can you take the beef out?" Their veggie burgers are fantastic! My brother will eat everything on their menu & we all love the breakfast options. As a finale? My mum has had many bread puddings in her life, this is one of her favourite places to get some. I gotta say, it is pretty fantastic. This restaurant is consistently delicious. We get over to Kailua-Kona at least twice a year to visit family and always make Pine Trees a part of our visit. I recently enjoyed the Tempura Ono Fish and Chips with salad and tartar sauce and it was some seriously ono Ono! My wife and I split the full plate fish n chips and a mini plate of fried shrimp, which was also delightful, and were completely stuffed. I love this place and I will always come back each visit! In my opinion, Pine Tree Cafe has expensive plate lunches. A pulehu short ribs plate last I checked was $16.00 and Rib Eye $18.00. These I believe are the highest priced styrofoam plate lunches on their menu. Most plates are $11.00-$13.00. However, the quality is higher than an L&L type spot and you have a choice between Mac salad or Tossed Greens. The tossed green salad is a very generous amount and comes in a separate styrofoam container. This is a very popular spot, therefore the traditional feeding times are busy an d you should expect to stand in line. Calling in your order is a good option if you don't like waiting in line. It goes without saying that on top of that you will have your wait time for the food which seems to be about 15-20 mins. Located between the airport and Costco, this is a great stop for a quick bite. It has a cafeteria feel, so you're not going for the ambience. You order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. I had their teriyaki chicken plate. It came with a huge serving of juicy dark meat chunked chicken. The marinade gave it a great flavor without being too sweet. A traditional Hawaiian plate, so it was served with two scoops rice and a side container of mac salad. Rice was perfectly done and the macaroni salad tasted like it had potato and tuna mixed in. The plate was more than enough for two of us.
