On a recommendation from a store owner in Hague, we went to Pitkin's after going to the Mineral Bridge & Cave. The staff was welcoming and the place was spotless. My daughter and I both got Cherry Cokes. (Great find as everywhere else only hadI had a perfectly cooked cheeseburger and my daughter enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich. So happy that we stopped here while visiting the Schroon Lake area. There was a group of us and we got a nice place on the patio pretty quickly. They allowed our dogs there too which was great! Now the food, my husband and I split an order of their Mac and Cheese and the Narrows sandwich. Both were great! The Narrows sandwich had a great balance of chicken, bacon, veggies, cheddar cheese and ranch dressing on perfectly toasted sourdough. This was a really tasty sandwich with a side of fries which were good as well. The mac and cheese was soooo good! There was a generous portion that was gooey and creamy. The spiral pasta with a blend of white cheeses was topped with melted cheddar cheese and bit of bacon which pushed it over the top. This is an excellent place to get some food. read more

A good choice! Our family of 5 were seated quickly on a busy Tuesday evening in late August. It was very cold inside because an AC wall unit blew cold air directly on us as we sat. Our server kindly turned it off while we ate. We liked the restaurant's decor; it was clean and like-new. Our waitress was very friendly, prompt and efficient though the dining room was at full capacity. Ample servers were working. There's a full bar with their own IPA. My 'Schrooner or Later' fried chicken on bun with tomato and lettuce was satisfying, but very dark from being deep fried too long. The turkey panini my daughter ordered looked delicious too. Pitkin's Restaurant in Schroon Lake, NY has been around since 1907. Their customers are loyal locals and loyal summer vacationers. Pitkin's is a favorite breakfast stop. It's consistent, friendly, & delightfully cosy. We've had many a fine breakfast here going back to the early 1960s. The recently retired owner, Marie has been the reason for it's success. Attention to detail, prompt friendly service at a great value price. Marie's pies are the talk of the town. She is still making them every morning. Younger relatives have taken over the business and are keeping with the tradition of great service and adding a few new items to the menu. This winter's renovation really put a new face on the old girl. Also they put in a patio for outdoor dining - a real plus during the pandemic. We had dinner here on Sat 8/08/20. We don't usually go out to dinner because we cook at camp often. But after a hard day of work we treated ourselves. Pitkin's has been know for years for their excellent Texas-style BBQ brisket. But sadly they were sold out this evening. The four of us had French onion soup ($5) , Caesar salad ($8), side of French fries ($3), meatloaf w/ pot & veg ($15), chicken bruschetta pasta ($15), and shrimp fra Diavolo. Meals were presented well, hot, and less than a 20 minute wait. It was busy a dinner time (we came at 6:40pm. Only one critique Shrimp dish was well prepared, shrimp were firm, lotsa chunky tomatoes but there wasn't any Diabolo in it. I let it go due to the present circumstances. Wait staff was very attentive and met all needs. The next morning, Sun 8/09/20 0830, we had breakfast outdoors at the same table. Short stack of blueberry pancakes w/ two sausage patties ($7.50), French toast w/ sausage ($8), veggie omelette w/ toast ($10), and a Good Morning Bowl of yogurt, fruit & granola ($7). All very good. Pitkin's has always served great breakfasts. Hours are 7:30am-8:00pm seven days a week. We do enjoy our visits to Pitkin's and we'll see you next time. Okay, I'm a little embarrassed that after coming to this restaurant for 30 years I have yet to write a review for this gem of a place. Pitkin's is synonymous with Schroon Lake... relaxed, unpretentious and just down-home good eating. Yes, my entire family absolutely loves coming here for dinner... be sure to try the BBQ (and that's BBQ anything, folks... they make their own BBQ sauce from scratch thanks to an old Texan recipe). I'm a sucker for the club sandwich and my boys can't say no to the hamburgers. But... oh my goodness... nothing beats the desserts at Pitkin's. They're homemade by the grandma of the business and you will be hard pressed to find better desserts anywhere. If it's a busy night, be sure to order dessert with your dinner or it will be gone by the time you're ready! Don't worry, they'll set it aside for you until you're ready. Last year, we were here & loved it. This year, we brought our Gluten Free daughter and were very disappointed. After being seated we asked the waitress about a Gluten Free menu or options on the menu. She looked at us like we were aliens and shrugged shoulders. Sort of a 4.5 star for food and the service rounds it up to 5. My only complaint was that I couldn't taste the cranberries, the server brought me more of that cranberry mayo in a flash - problem solved. Cole slaw was also fantastic! Pitkin's has been around for more than 100 years, starting out as a family business. They specialize in Texas-style BBQ and even sell their own sauce for the home enthusiast. This is exactly the kind of place you want to seek out when you travel. Or at least it appears to be. In all actuality, one would do best to AVOID this place all together. The aforementioned hallmarks take on a different sheen upon closer inspection. For example, even though they specialize in Texas BBQ, there was no mention of brisket on the menu. I opted for the spare ribs with their house BBQ sauce along with a side of baked beans, corn, and fries. The ribs were disappointing. The sauce was terrible, tasting really only of vinegar. The meat was not as tender as I would have liked either. The fries were clearly bagged, frozen fries prepared for the occasion. Is it really that hard to slice a potato? The vegetable sides were equally dreadful. That was definitely a miss in the case of the baked beans. Great BBQ spots usually pride themselves in the quality of their beans. The ambience is that of a small diner, and the service was haphazard, though friendly. My girlfriend's choice of dinner was actually worse than mine, and she was unable to eat any of her entree. Our final server noticed this and insisted that half the price of her entree be taken off the bill. This was a very nice, unexpected gesture. Overall though, I was just disappointed with all of the shortcuts that the cook took. With a little bit of work, the food could have been so, so much better. read more

My daughter and I stopped in after a long day in Vermont on our way home to the Capital District in Upstate NY. I have mixed feeling about this place. It seems like a local favorite. And the food justifies that; flavorful, down to earth comfort food. Some of it was delicious. The ribs were well seasoned and slow cooked so they truly fell off the bone. But some of it was not. The gravy on the mashed potatoes seemed to be made from a mix, thickened with cornstarch. Bummer. The pie slice I ordered to go had a wonderfully flaky crust and a sweet, tangy strawberry rhubarb filling. It looked like all the pies were similarly baked. So why two stars? I have concerns about the overall hygiene of the place. It's not clean, and I observed the waitstaff cross contaminate a few times (touching the face, nose, and mouth, then touching service or customer items). The service area in the dining room seemed to need a serious deep clean as well. I really didn't want to see the kitchen because I had a cranky, hangry toddler on my hands and just needed to feed her. Shooting the flies away was also annoying. Somehow, I've visited Pitkin's, a quiet diner in a sleepy town wedged halfway between Albany and Montreal, three times now. The ambiance forgives me for not being more diverse in my food choices - I've gotten a BLT on rye every time. It's exactly what a BLT should be: straightforward, clean, just a smear of mayo and in fact not too much of anything. Under $10 with fries, chips, soup or salad. Everything about Pitkin's feels a thousand percent local and relaxed. That said, the waitstaff being so laid-back is not convenient when you're in a rush. We went again for breakfast since it's by our camp.. and yet again fabulous. They did change owners, so there is a newer menu, but it is still great! I ordered avacado toast with eggs and my boyfriend got french toast with sausage. French toast smelled so good and looked even better, the avacado toast was a HUGE portion, but it was a great way to start my morning. Coffee was hot and great, and the breakfast was overall great. I've been to Pitkin's a number of times between 2010 and now. I went there originally for the amazing pie (and that's really the reason I come back). Also, you can expect greasy American cuisine with a laid back atmosphere and waiters (and waitresses). The only downside is that they don't have any vegetarian food aside from the grilled cheese and curly fries. read more

I have been a long time visitor to this restaurant and have been witness to its many incarnations. From the takeover of the Rice family, and Marie and Randy running the show, to its new makeover. The place is very nicely renovated and the patio is a great addition, and during this pandemic I understand things are not easy. My first visit was a home run, I had the ribs, and although they certainly were not Randy's Texas BBQ sauce they were good, the coleslaw was a very nice addition and the extra crispy onion rings, although frozen, were tasty and not as bad as I thought they would be. The service was youthful without the exuberance that you'd expect. Since it took a while to get the check I decided-to head in to pay, where much to my surprise I discovered that Marie's famous desserts were still available. What a delight to bring home a Berry Crumbleberry. I was never told about this and to my wonderment why wasn't this being marketed. That brings me to my second visit. My interest was piqued by the Mac and Cheese brisket. Sadly I was not impressed even though my server described it as Mac and Cheese with brisket throughout. It was mediocre at best, the Mac and Cheese was without any cheesiness and the brisket was dumped on top. Not nearly as flavorful as the ribs from my previous visit. Seemed like an afterthought and certainly not mixed throughout as described. The upside was a Marie's bread pudding to go. Since I am 1 good and 1 mediocre visit. I'll be back for a tiebreaker. Every single thing we ordered was AMAZING. The ribs especially were the favorite of the table. So juicy and tender and flavorful. The sides were really good too!! We all completely cleaned our plates. Then for dessert we were so full but had heard about the amazing peanut butter pie so we shared one piece...it was not enough!! So amazing!! Their smoked pork and smoked brisket has a Weber Bullet kind of taste. IE, the way I made it when I first started smoking meats. And this is not a bad thing. Although the meat tends to be dry, you get the full wood and smoke flavor. Plus, there's always some sort of bbq sauce or mayonnaise based accompaniment to make things moist. Their coffee has a nice almost-smokey kind of bite as well. The staff is pleasant and the restaurant is clean and sports a psuedo hick look. I'd go back again. read more

My family owned a second home on Schroon Lake for nearly 20 years. As children, my father used to always taunt us by saying that he was going to take us to Pitkin's if we didn't behave ourselves. Why? I have no idea, but that was one of his odd things I suppose. Being that we were pretty well behaved kids, we very rarely ate at Pitkin's during all of those years and it always had a very negative association in my mind. Recently however, I returned to Schroon Lake for the first time in 7 years and for the first time as a true adult. My fiance and I decided to give Pitkin's a try at the strong recommendation of my father (yep, don't ask). We shared both the BBQ beef and pulled pork sandwiches and topped the meal off with the homemade peanut butter pie. This is definitely the kind of place that would be featured on that show Diners Drive-Ins and Dives and fall under the diner but also dive category. The combination of the old looking furniture, somewhat random decor, and geriatric clientele doesn't leave one hopeful upon entry. However, the service is very attentive and clearly well organized, everyone extremely friendly, and the food quite delish. Is this the best BBQ that I've ever had in my life, no. I think that an upgrade to the bun would definitely kick the sandwiches up a notch. But that being said, both the beef and the pork were very tasty. I enjoyed the BBQ sauce which I found to be basic, but good. What also stood out were the fries and the coleslaw. The fries were very fresh and extremely crispy and flavorful and the coleslaw was chopped very nicely and had a great sweet flavor. The real winner though was the peanut butter pie. It tasted like a Reese's peanut butter cup but way bigger and fluffier. For a peanut butter lover, absolutely amazing. Overall, we had a very positive experience and after all of these years, I can gladly say that I'd quite willingly go back to Pitkin's again. read more
