So I must get a menu from Pizza D'Oro in my mailbox at least twice a month, most of those end up in the trash or in a drawer in my kitchen. One lazy Saturday afternoon I finally decided to use the menu and give this place a chance. I ordered through their online deliver system, which was simple and easy. Delivery was very quick, they say it could take up to 45 minutes for you to get your food but my food arrived in much less than half that time, I was surprisingly shocked that it arrived so quickly. I ordered the cheese steak with mushrooms and a side order of fries. The cheese steak was good but not great. Nice flavor and texture in the meat, tomatoes and mushrooms tasted fresh. Mayo was a little strong but not overpowering. Fries were just okay, a few tasted as if they were not cooked all the way through which is always a disappointment but for the most part they were warm and tasty. I wish they were slightly crunchier as well. If you're feeling lazy and live in the delivery zone, I definitely think you should give Pizza D'Oro a chance, I could see myself ordering from here again. read more

As we visited DC for a week, we tried many restaurants. Many of they had employees that barley talked to us and just said "mhm." But the guys at Pizza D'Oro, well, we had a few laughs. We ordered a Pizza, and some containers of Mambo Sauce. (Which is a must-have for DC). Besides living on a side alley way with a basement entrance, and the restaurant being 4.9 miles away, we received our pizza in just over 20 minutes. The pizza came n a branded box with no greece residue underneath. The pizza its self was pale looking, and had no apparent cheddar cheese. The crust was a bit soggy, but the sauce and the cheese made up for that. The sauce was more of a traditional margarita based dressing, and the cheese despite looking mostly montzerlla, tasted just about average. All in all, this experience was very good. Trying to find delicious delivery pizza is a challenge, one that I am willing to accept. Traveling for work, I often want to eat something in my hotel room at the end of a busy day without dealing with sub-par room service...enter my search for delicious delivery pizza. Pizza D'Oro is reasonably priced and delivers. So 2 of my qualifications for selecting delivery are met right off the bat. The pizza selection is average, but the delivery time was slated to be quick, and I was hungry, so I took the leap. I ordered up a 10" Works (it has pepperoni, sausage, onions, mushrooms, and black olives--I excluded green peppers). I also got some mozzarella sticks, because who can have self-control when hangry and offered toasty, golden cheese snacks? Their menu also has calzones, sandwiches, salads and a bunch of other stuff. That is fine, but I want pizza. Piping hot, dripping with cheese pizza. I got the pizza part, and some bonus cheese sticks. Delivery was relatively fast, faster than projected by about 10 minutes, so I was happy. My pizza was ok--not dripping in cheese, not super crispy, just middle of the road, but a lot of food for a reasonable price. There were plenty of toppings, a normal amount of cheese (even though the toppings were supposed to include extra cheese). The cheese sticks were a little disappointing. The marinara was cold and the container caused them to sweat, so they were not super crispy. The magic here is XL pie with extra cheese for 10.99. We get this once a week at least. Crust is thin and crisp, cheese is cheesy. Make sure to add the oregano. Place is good. Downside is they are occasionally not consistent with their pies. I've had a couple too thick or not cheesy. Etc. but 91% on point. read more

The marinara sauce with spaghetti is light, authentic and delicious! I like to add the chicken parm to it. It's my go-to for dinner once a week. After a late night at work, everything was closed. This place is open till 2am and is your normal late night food place. I ordered lasagna and pizza fries. The chicken parmesan lasagna was really good. It's hot and tasty, and portion size was huge -- enough for two. It's super cheesy and saucy too -- just the way I like it. It was delicious. The pizza fries were okay. The potato wedges were little dry and powdery. I was hoping for some pepperoni and ranch dressing on the pizza fries. They were pretty fast with their delivery. On a cold day, there are few things in the world as awesome as a warm jumbo slice of pizza from this Shaw pizzeria. However, to call this a true jumbo slice place is a lie because instead of one slice for around $2.50, they only have double jumbo slices on the menu for $4.00. Not that I mind having double the food for lunch for less but future dine in customers should be aware of this little menu quirk. They also don't qualify purely as a slice place because they don't just have the pizza laying around waiting for people to stop in. The wait time for a slice, er slices, is usually a few minutes but when the slices come out, they are so hot and cheesy that it's like eating a romance novel. They serve it up on two plates and let the customer add as many spices as they want. But I have personally found this pizza perfectly seasoned with just the cheese and sauce. As a lot of local people also dine here among the new worker crowd, it's cool to hear the stories of old Shaw while sitting on one of their four stools here as well (it's not really a great place for groups). The pizza definitely isn't fancy. The crust is thin and so is the slice itself but I have to say that it's absolutely perfect for folding like you're in New York City and warming up your hands. And that's all I can ask for during the upcoming time of year. If it was a block closer to my office, I might actually eat here every day. read more

My girlfriend and I just ordered a two-sub special through Livingsocial's Instant Ordering for delivery - the special is apparently the restaurant's, running every day. The service was perfect: we wrote pretty obnoxiously particular instructions for toppings for her chicken cheesesteak and my turkey subs and they got it all right, with our instructions paraphrased by a smarter person into simple instructions and printed on the wrapper. Delivery arrived earlier than the estimated hour by about ten minutes at 9 p.m. on a Friday, and LivingSocial tells us we're 1 1/2 miles away. The subs, which came with fries at least as good as Burger King's and a couple of cans of soda, were fresh, evenly-made and delicious. Nothing soggy; fries still hot. The delivery guy was polite. Seriously. This is comfort food, not gourmet, but it's done better than you'll expect. read more

I ordered delivery from Pizza D'Oro because I heard their garlic rolls were bomb. They were! I ordered the oreo cheesecake for dessert. It was extremely disappointing. It was pre-package and obviously not made by the restaurant. It looked like something that came from a vending machine. The dimensions were TINY x TINY. When I opened it up it only got tinier. Yes! Awesome! Delicious! I noticed that this place had won '2nd Runner Up' in the Shaw Main Streets Best New Shaw Businesses of 2011, and thought I'd give it a try. We ordered online, through Living Social, and they were here exactly one hour later, as promised. The food was awesome. The salads were crisp, fresh, and huge. The calzone could easily have fed two very hungry adults, and the ingredients were tops. I ordered the gyro, which was great. And honestly, I'm a food snob. We've ordered D'Oro about 3x a week for more than a year now. Some observations: (1) Delivery, if you're in the U Street neighborhood, is usually very fast. (2) Pizza is waaay better than Boli's or other chains. (3) Cheese steak and chicken cheese steak subs are amazing. (Order them with the peppers.) (4) Wings are usually good, but inconsistent. In a neighborhood in which the norm is ordering a subway sandwich or shitty Chinese food behind a bullet proof glass wall, Pizza d'Oro is a warm and welcoming oasis. Offering everything from quality late night pizza and sandwiches to that Gatorade you so desperately need on an overboard night to even a selection of Ben and Jerry's ice cream for that Netflix night in, this is a new(ish) establishment that I hope evolves into an institution. This isn't certainly fine cuisine, but what it is, it certainly deserves four stars. One word of warning: their cheeseburger is basically a footlong subway burger (longest patty ever). Be prepares to grub. My favorite aside from the pizza is the chicken parm sammich. The one dish I was let down by was the spaghetti. Stick to pizza and sandwiches and you'll be good. read more

I ordered jalapenos on mine, and they were perfect- fresh, not pickled, added a nice but not overwhelming kick of heat. I don't eat a lot of pizza. But, not because I'm not a fan, but because I'm too much of a fan. I like pizza the same way a drunk likes a cheap gin (well, I'm also a drunk who likes cheap gin, so I guess that works either direction), ravenously and without regard for one's health. It doesn't matter if it's frozen and thawed in a microwave, or hand-crafted and beautifully rendered in brick ovens in a small villa in Italy. Either way, I'm gonna eat it, and I'm gonna eat it to the point where I kind of hate myself. But, my habits are not reflected in my tastes. I do know the difference between good pizza and bad pizza, and in spite of the fact that I'll eat half of one in a few minutes does not necessitate that I don't know what I'm talking about. So, I decided to finally start writing about the few pizza places I've gone to in DC (home of world famous pizza! right..? ehh...we can hope). Anyway, Pizza D'Oro is perfectly passable. They really don't do anything wrong, but they also don't do a lot really well. For example, for everything they do right, there's a bit of a drawback. A double-edged double-stuffed sword, if you will. For example, the delivery is speedy but though the pizza arrived just warm enough to dive into, not piping hot. The options for building your own pizza are plentiful, but the variety of the options are lacking (i.e tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes or pepperoni, beef salami). The sauce is tangy and sweet, but there's barely any on the thing. The cheese is plentiful and hearty, but it's not melty and gooey. Ultimately, PD is solid, but memorable it is not. I would recommend the place for people close by, or if you're just walking around and want to grab something, but if you have options, there are a few other places ahead in line, both for the quality of the ingredients and for the price. They do have some really good pick-up deals consistently going on, and the delivery is fast (a perk if you have guests over), and that does make up for the blander elements, but I wouldn't go searching it out. But, then again I'll still eat it, and it a lot of it, so I guess I don't have much to complain about. So to assign a completely arbitrary score: I give it 3 Ps out of 5 Ds read more

Just moved to the neighborhood and looking for a great, easy pizza place.. A few pleasant surprises - 1. The gentleman who answered the phone and the delivery person were beyond friendly. That's a way to win my business - Aww. 2. They also quoted 35-40 minutes for delivery, but it came in 25 minutes. Win. 3. The pizza was good, almost great! Fresh ingredients and great dough. Yum. Their specialty pizzas were good - the Buffalo Chicken had great flavor and they were kind enough to add pepperonis per our reques on the Hawaiian Pizza. For the price, you probably could get more food. Although the pizza was good, I think I would have actually preferred Papa John's, which gives you a little more for your money and is just as good. read more

I ordered the pepperoni lovers on a Saturday night around 8:00pm for delivery. The pizza came within 30 minutes and it was a delicious thin-ish crust pizza! It was loaded with pepperoni and I added green olives to make it the most perfect flavor combination known to man (rivaled only by peanut butter and chocolate). I stop into Pizza D'Oro maybe every three months when I'm in town to visit my daughter. I was loving it because there are not a lot of of pizza shops that accommodate an anchovies request. But the pizza was not that appealing today. Now...did I miss something. Was this place sold or changed ownership. Here's why I ask. Today the crust was so thin and soggy, the pepperoni is smaller, the sausage didn't taste like sausage and the outer crust was not as tasty as I remember but it certainly is greasier. The person taking my order had a problem listening to me and touching the screen. So I had to repeat myself but if that helped my slice I'm happy to be twice as nice. I'm just saying that my daughter and I noticed the same changes to this pizza shop that we usually give five stars. This little hole in the wall might accommodate a few more patrons if they finish that area as you walk in. Maybe they like it looking unfinished. I'm just saying. I'm not sure if I want to go back...I don't like my pizza soggy and wet on the bottom. read more
