Okay I'll admit, the food isn't necessarily 5 stars, 4-4/5, not a lot of gluten free options, but the small pizza with the lunch special or the happy hour, with G Free crust is pretty good. The chopped salad is really good as well; I'll say, it is not consistent in presentation, sometimes it's huge, sometimes it's average. It would be great if they offered a nightly special... Now, if the food isn't 5 stars, why 5 stars you ask? Well they have a rolling craft beer selection and there is always something good and new on tap. And the staff knows the beers and what I prefer, so they're always good at saying, oh you'll like...And, I mean come on, I wouldn't give 5 stars just for beer, the service, great staff. I have loved the flavors of Pizza Nova for years, ever since the Hillcrest location when my son was 3. We celebrated his 21st bday yesterday here in Solano Beach, at his request. Pizza Nova has quickly become one of my favorite spots in Solana Beach. My personal view on happy hours is that they can happen anytime, and I sincerely appreciate that Pizza Nova starts their happy hour at 3pm... sometimes 4pm is just too late. All you really need to know about happy hour here is $4. $4 appetizers, $4 drinks (wells, beer, wine). The website only lists 4 appetizers that are included on the happy hour menu, but when we went in we were told that every item on the regular appetizer menu is happy hour priced, except for the Salmon Crostini and... well, one other, but I can't remember what. As for food, happy hour or not, this place is delish. When you sit down and you immediately get FREE garlic knots, you know you're in for a good time. If you're a garlic lover, I also can't say enough about the Baked Garlic - seriously, it's insane. You get 2 or 3 cloves of whole baked garlic, with pesto and goat cheese and these great grilled bread slices. Your significant other may not enjoy your enjoyment of this, but that's their issue. Also, Grilled Portobello Mushroom. $4 happy hour, $7.25 otherwise, and filling. The mushrooms are stuffed with tons of goat cheese, and the tomato sauce and mozzarella makes this enough for a small meal. You can also get $4 mini (not so mini) pizzas at happy hour, which is an awesome way to sample their pizzas before committing to coming back for dinner for a full one. My boyfriend got the Thai Chicken pizza, and it was one of the best we've tasted. California Pizza Kitchen was always my favorite for restos with this, but it doesn't compete. Overall, I love the casual-gourmet vibe of this place. They also deliver and do take-out, which was great when I had family in town and everyone wanted to stay in and eat something slightly different - there's definitely something for everyone here. Also, the name advertises its pizza, which is really good, but it's not what I (personally; my boyfriend is different) come here for. I would STRONGLY recommend trying other stuff too - the Mac N Cheese, the Chipotle Lime Chicken Salad, all the appetizers... everything will make your belly very, very happy. (PS my 4 stars is because the only white wine they have for happy hour is a Chardonnay, which is just not my thing) read more

Great food truly- but the service can be less than good at times. We have eated at this location 10+ times. If you like you drinks refilled- good luck! My husband is always having to go find our server to get a refill on is iced tea. If you sit outside on the patio- now you need more patience. We love the food- the spicy shrimp roll is enough for two people, and delicious. We just get frustrated with the service. Why don't eateries teach their staff to always to scanning all the tables for the people who have that "I need help" look on their face? We went to PN on a week night and just missed happy hour. The bread balls were awesome. Pizza was good, very gourmet. Probably wouldn't fill up 2 grown-ups with out the bread or appetizer. Lasagne wasn't anything to get excited about. Wouldn't order it again. The guy who served us seemed to forget about us. I just gave my water to my husband since he kept forgetting to fill it up. This place is interesting to be frank. We showed up and chose to eat outside. Fortunately or unfortunately the sun was setting but happened to be right directly in our eyes. When we asked if there is anyway we could lower the shade they said no it doesn't lower. It looks very clearly like it does but then again we chose to sit outside so it is what it is. The service was pretty subpar at best. We waited forever to get our appetizers. By the time the appetizers came, which they were garlic roles it shouldn't of taken longer than 10 min, the entrées were ready. It took a while for them to refill our waters and never saw the staff check in even for a quick hello. It wasn't busy so it shouldn't of been this bad but oh well. The food was great, the bread was fantastic. But the service was questionable. My waiter Zachary was horrible. He wasn't very attentive, when I ordered ice tea he didn't give a lemon or the container of Sugar. When the meal finally came he didn't check on us once. I had to get up personally walk over to him to get his attention since he was too busy fooling around talking to his coworker. Likelihood of returning is not very high except it being a family members favorite restaurant. I would advise Zachary to be retrained on his courtesy and customer service. read more

My husband and I went to Pizza Nova for the 1st time in a few months since we were craving their Italian Chopped Salad. We were dismayed to find.they changed it. It used to be loaded with salami and mozzarella cheese and vegetables all miced in and chopped small. Now its 99% lettuce with chunks of salami and chicken on top with just a few tomatoes and no cheese. It's like they decided to put all meat and vegetables on top to disguise the facts there is less with more lettuce to fill the plate. Do not like the new version!! read more

We love the pizza here but I am very shocked at how stingy they are with a side of ranch. If you dine it is not a problem, however with take out you are charged. The price of my pizza should be able to include a small side of ranch on request. Can you imaging if In-N-Out started to charge for ketchup. I don't get it. I really don't. Ordered food here with some of the co-workers because they really liked it and wanted to do the Nova thing. I ordered a pizza to share and was pretty disappointed. See the thing is, that a lot of places either knock it out of the park with something different and new or do the tried and true really well. This was neither. It was ho hum pizza that was WICKED expensive for what it is. I know that everyone is lamenting a down economy, but this was a supreme waste of money for what it was. The service was great, the take order was superb and I am still pissed at myself for listening to my friend Jen C. who told me you tip the to-go guy. For all to-go people in the future I do not tip, it was this places fault for semi decent pizza. You don't tip the to-go guy. He puts your food in a bag and gives you napkins. She apologized a 100 times. Her incompetence was beyond words. This was the worst service I can ever remember having in a restaurant! I had to ask for a straw three times, I never got a spoon for my tea, I had to beg for sugar, we had to ask for bread, and then we had to beg for silverware and plates for the bread, three other tables were served before us, even though they came in after us (and we only ordered salads!) The tea with milk tasted odd. The salad looked like the lettuce was bad, but no one ever came over to ask us if we needed anything of if everything was alright. Each time I asked for a spoon, straw, etc. I had to either stop any server in the aisle or get up and ask! But on top of all this, the menu didn't list the large dinner sized salads, so the server assured us it was maybe four dollars more. Well, how much is it?! She never did tell us. I like this place. My girlfriend and I come here every once and awhile. She loves the large salads with Chicken added. I like the Pizza Nova (speciality pizza) or the pasta Nova (basically the same thing on pasta) Our favorite waitress is Anna. She's a lovely blond girl who works really hard, gets our order always right and has service with a smile. We always try to get a seat in her section when she is working. Good beer, good food. This place is great! Service was amazing even though we were the only party outside. There was four of us and we were never short on drinks or wanting for anything. The food was great- I got the chicken piccata and the sauce and mashed potatoes were just perfect. We also ordered a pizza to split between us all and take home for the next day. Crust is crunchy and while it's thin it's not thin crust- its the perfect middle. I would recommend trying this place when you want something a little different from the normal pizza joint.
