I had such a wonderful experience here and cannot wait to come back and bring all my friends and family. We came in the early afternoon on a Friday and were promptly seated. Sara was great and explained all the delicious options on the menu since it was our first time there. We got the Sicilian style Ray J with half pepperoni and half without, and it was absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed the crust of the pizza in particular -- I usually overlook crust in favor of the toppings but this pizza's crust was actually the standout to me! With that being said, the toppings were great too and I loved the burrata. The ambiance inside was very pleasant and well-lit in the afternoon and its location is very convenient. Opened not too long ago. Took over the cafe that used to be here and looks like they were busy on a Friday night. Walked and was seated within 5 minutes. Love their menu. You can choose between 4 styles of pizza. We decided to try a bit of everything. Got the meatballs which were good but a little more on the dry side. Got the bucatini amatriciana which was great! The guanciale was nice cooked and rendered, crispy and porky, cut real well with the tomato sauce and Al dente pasta. We got the La Regina pizza NY style and oh my what a pie. Had some good chili oil going on, crust was amazing, great cheese to sauce ratio. Ended the night with a nice cannoli. Service was also attentive despite it being busy. I never thought I'd post a review on Yelp but here I am... This place has really delicious food and we've had great experiences here, however the atmosphere has seemed off lately. Last night was our final straw. We watched as someone who seems to be the manager, stomped up to an employee on the phone and started to yell and swear at him for picking up the phone at around 9pm and taking a togo order,-- they're posted as being open until 10pm on the weekends by the way. We've come before to see this particular restaurant closed early, and one time we even came around 8:45 and got rudely turned away because they were "closing" by the same person on a Saturday night. Went in last night because we have been dying to try this place. We got in just before 9p and ordered a pie to go, we were told about a 25min wait which was no problem. About the end of our wait time the host (Emilio I think) came up and informed us there was an issue with the oven and they were remaking the pizza. Again, not a problem because he was really nice, apologetic, and professional. They're also new so there's bound to be hiccups. He offered us a round of drinks/pasta as an apology - super nice of him and continued to thank us for coming and understanding. Really nice person We sat at the bar and immediately knew that the bartender was the complete opposite and just did not want to be at work. She was pretty short with us, not very attentive, and felt the need to speak to her coworkers about her schedule for Sunday not being done rather than ask us if we need anything. She also charged us for the drink/pasta that we were told were going to be complimentary but we didn't want to make a big deal so we paid for it. The only time she really spoke to us was when she rushed us out towards the end which just sealed the impression she left. The food overall was delicious. We ordered the classic NY style pizza and Peperoncino pasta - loved both ! Ambiance was really great and service from Emilio was fantastic. We had friendly service and the Detroit style pizza was 5 star. The arugula salad was massive and tasty. My cocktail was middle of the road. I came here for a bite with the family and while the ambiance is quite lovely the service and taste of the food did not live up to a five star review. Service - Very RUDE server. As we were preparing to leave the server questioned the tip we left. I felt really uncomfortable. First the server hovered over me and watched me as I paid. Second he asked if service wasn't good because of the tip option I chose. If he would have left it alone he would have found a cash tip. Instead his rudeness left us feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable. Be prepared to tip over 20% instantly as their patience is lacking. Just like their pizza service wasn't anything special or spectacular it was rude. Food - I would have loved to see more vegetarian options. If you are veg your options are salad, focaccia, or cheese pizza. While you can make your own pizza it would have been nice to see different chef creations. Taste - We ordered a cheese and added mushrooms. The sauce was lacking in flavor and salt. The saving Grace was the NY style dough. The cheese was tasted cheap, cardboard like, and again no flavor. For $30 you could pick up some slices from Artichoke, Sliver, or make your way to The Wood. read more

We liked everything we ordered. There is decent parking immediately close to the restaurant. There is one public parking spot a block or so away but looks a bit shady. So many good things to say, but weighed down by two big caveats: 1. Ambiance upstairs (about half the seats?) is somewhat sterile, but the worst is the ceiling fan blades too near the light fixtures which creates an awful flicker. I tried to get re-seated but too busy. (Previously ate downstairs, which is pretty good.) 2. The specialty "Sicilian Style" is, like Detroit Style, a very bread-y dinner. The fact that it's SUPERB doesn't change the fact that I can enjoy about a slice of this as an appetizer, but have difficulty making a meal of it. But see good points below: Good points: I returned a second time because my wife and kids like it. And the "crust" is the world's lightest and fluffiest focaccia. I'm not a bread fanatic, but this stuff is pretty amazing. And the topping ingredients are of the best stuff. Add in: really personable service for both my visits, and really good wine. The quality is here for sure... Just don't get seated upstairs, and you better love a starch-heavy dinner. At least it's an amazing starch! I don't like Detroit-style pizza, so I was never the best audience for da Laura. I'd rather go to Rose around the corner - but Pizzeria da Laura is easier to get into last second. read more

I'm pretty disappointed in the takeout experience. Ordered online. Picked up about 5 mins after the estimated time. Pizza was lukewarm box was damp underneath from sitting out. Flavors were ok but may have been better if hot. Arugula salad was very plain, with only cheese and dressing for $12. Desserts were good, though the tiramisu was a bit warm. I usually order from Zachary's or Little Star, both of which keep your pizza and other food items at the right temperature before you pick up. Also, it would have been nice if the girl working takout had looked up from doodling to help me get my order. Luckily, another worker who was bringing up orders noticed me. The NY style pizza is one of the best in the bay area. Great crust, perfect amount of cheese and sauce. No notes. This is as good as it gets. The grandma pizza is ok but I'm not that familiar with the dish and I'm not really sure what the hallmarks of a grandma pizza are. Can't wait to try their sicilian. Also the vodka cream pasta is nothing to shake a stick at! It's a better pasta than some pasta places make. read more

Sat at the small bar and ordered the pizza bar setting standard: Pepperoni Pizza Crust was excellent, soft but not collapsing and a hint smoky char. Yummy cheese and abundant pepperoni made for a delicious pie. The bartender was quick, friendly, conversational and also works hard doing the more important work of educating our children as a 9th grade English teacher at Berkeley High! I've only ordered takeout from pizzeria da Laura, so my comments are only relevant to that. The pizza is absolutely outstanding. Not only is the crust one of the best around, but everything they put on the pizza is high quality Ingredients well-prepared. They balance the flavors of the ingredients well. I had a New York "Pazzo" pizza, each time, which had a mix of pepperoni, sausage, onions, garlic, bell peppers, etc. The pizzas were ready when they said they would be and service was friendly. One time I ordered a Caesar salad, and it was good too. Very happy this place is here. read more

We did ray j ny style, and the good part was that they were very generous with the ingredients. However, due to that, the pizza was extremely extremely extremely salty. It also tasted like regular pepperoni pizza, just more salty. I know it's understood that pepperoni will be salty, but this was on another level that all 4 of us were quite surprised. We had to remove the pepperonis while eating, but it was still salty. However, seeing from the abundance of ingredients on the pizza, we are planning to return to try other pizzas in a different style. read more

First time in Berkeley and this place called out to me. We got the focaccia, which was light, airy, and tasty. We split the NY style La Regina pizza. It was so flavorful and balanced. The place is small and was full by 6p, so highly recommended a reservation on concert nights. Stefan was our server and he's wonderful. I have been wanting to visit here since learning about Laura's journey as a pizzaiolo. (Pizzaziola???). We booked a table for a Friday night. Interior is bright, inviting and cheerful. Service was friendly, informative and efficient. We tried the arancini. They were tasty but not nearly hot enough. We also tried the arugula salad with lemon. It was OK. Very good strong lemon flavor but curiously lacking in other flavors. Maybe needed salt? Not sure. It was OK, not fantastic. There are four types of pizza to try: NY (classic thinner but not really thin, with a chewy crust), Sicilian (Square, thicker crust like focaccia), Detroit (Super thick crust) and Grandma (a square pie with a thinner crust like a NY). We had a NY and a Sicilian. We much preferred the NY style. Crust was flavorful and chewy, sauce, toppings and cheese good. The crust was not QUITE as tasty as Tony's New York in North Beach. The Sicilian was fine but not a world beater. The location is PERFECT if you are seeing theatre in Berkley. Very close to the Berkeley theatre district and plenty of parking lots. read more

I am going to run counter to all the other reviews for this pizzeria by saying the slice I had was underwhelming. Doughy crust and flavorless tomato sauce. This is why I steer away from chain pizzeria pizzas. To have a slice like this from a place that has received so much attention was very disappointing. I will qualify my rating by saying I prefer a thin, crisp crust. I like seasoned tomato sauce and I realize that not everyone has these same preferences when it comes to pizza. As a further comparison, I will say I LOVE Gioia pizza and have had it both in their Berkeley location and SF location. Laura's just doesn't measure up to the hype that made me want to try it nor does it compare (in my humble opinion) with the neighboring slice joints in Berkeley. Edit to this review next day: Having just had Mama's Boy Pizza for lunch today, I would also choose Mama's Boy over PDL. read more

I don't post on Yelp anymore but...I'm coming out of retirement for this one. Chef Laura Meyer, 3x world pizza champion, knocked it out of the park. Her restaurant is officially open in Berkeley and it's everything I ever wanted in a corner pizza place. It took us a few minutes to choose from the pizza topping options, then we chose the pizza style. NY, Sicilian, Detroit, or Grandma. Genius. We tried La Regina - Detroit style, Pepperoni - NY style, and the Ray J - Grandma style. All of the pizza varieties we tried were delicious.
