The octopus was really good with the fingerling potatoes and the fennel salsa it was on. Different but really tasty. The octopus was tender. The arrancini was just ok. Pizzeria Stella was easily one of the highlights of our time in Philadelphia. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, inviting, and had a really nice vibe that made the whole experience feel special. The food was absolutely amazing. The pizza was perfectly cooked with a great balance of flavors, and you can tell it's made with quality ingredients. Everything came out fresh and tasted just as good as it looked. It's the kind of place where every bite leaves you wanting more. The location is also a huge plus. It's right near so many major attractions, which made it super convenient for us to stop in and enjoy a great meal while exploring the city, especially during Easter weekend. Great experience here. I loved the pizza here!! The business operates very efficiently from host to those clearing the tables. Very nice and comfortable decor. Plenty of seating including bar seating. There's also bar seating looking over the pizza cooks. It was a delight to see the production of how they make each pizza. One guy does the dough, another adds the toppings, another puts it into the oven, and the last guy adds the finishing touches and either boxes it up or hands it over to a food runner for those dining inside. Nice menu in addition to the delicious pizzas! I recommend the Caesar salad and grilled octopus. They have a very nice cocktail and wine menu as well. Staff were very nice and also very focused on providing good service. I recommend reservations during peak hours and weekends. However, they will do the best to accommodate. However, the place itself is not as welcoming, as the very loud music is very disturbing. We recently moved to Philly from Northern California for a 2 month stint before heading to our new house in NJ. We DoorDashed an order from here last night and I have to say a few things: number one, everything was delicious. We are picky about Italian, particularly red-sauce Italian, and it was difficult to find quality red-sauce Italian in NoCal. The pasta was perfectly al dente - we got the rigatoni all vodka and the spaghetti pomodoro - and the pizza margherita components were all high-quality and flavorful, from the crust to the bright sauce to the buffalo mozzarella. (We did not eat it all, and saved lots for leftovers, we're not that crazy.) Number two, everything we've ordered through DoorDash has been better than what we had in NoCal and has come twice as fast. Anyway, everything we ordered was amazing, would totally order again or go there, and btw, even the Caesar salad was good, it used little gem lettuce instead of romaine, which was still super-crunchy and very flavorful. I don't expect the food in suburban NJ to be as good as Philly's, so we will definitely have to make return trips often. read more

This place was highly recommended, but we didn't enjoy anything about it. The pizza was too small to satisfy our hunger, and it was too thin. When it came to wine- we were gobsmacked. The prices were outrageous. We paid 30 dollars for what they called a "half carafe." They said it was enough for each of us to have two glasses. The glasses were highball glasses. The wine in the split we got wouldn't have filled two wine glasses. We get this same wine, Montepulciano, for half the price at Dante and Luigi's- a fine Italian restaurant. My husband and I received a Stephen Starr gift card for Christmas and were excited to try Pizzeria Stella. It has been on our list for a while so this felt like the perfect excuse to try it out! First of all, Head House Square is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Philly. Most of the city is super walkable, but this area has it all as far as shopping and restaurants go. After going to Stella many times over the last few years, I felt compelled to write a review. We sat at the pizza bar and enjoyed watching every pizza you can imagine created during the hour or so we were there. We started with the Little Gem Caesar salad - which definitely isn't little, but it's definitely a gem! The romaine leaves might have been the largest I've had in a salad - tenderly crisp with a delightful Parmesan dressing, and crunchy little croutons. It was so fresh, and perfect for two to share. Next, Polpette! Wood roasted meatballs with a gravy that will momentarily have you forgetting you're having pizza! I savored every incredible bite, and would have asked for bread to soak up the sauce, but knew I wouldn't have room for the pizza. Of course, we had our pizza served after the salad and meatballs. We selected the Pistachio pizza, one of the most unique pizzas I've ever had. It's layered with fontina cheese and red onions, topped with pistachios, and has a subtle, yet seductive rosemary seasoning that pulls everything together. Over time, I've had the pepperoni pizza (just what you'd expect), the sausage (I'm not a huge ground meat eater so for me it was just meh), the mushroom (outstanding!), and the pistachio (fun and unique). I also find their Caesar salad really good -- it's hard to make a Caesar special but still a Caesar, and they manage to do it. They also have good signature cocktails. Pizzeria Stella is a very solid Italian spot. I will always return for the olive oil gelato - it's incredible and probably my favorite ice cream in Philly. I will say though, the last time I visited the scoop felt significantly smaller lol. They also have good pizza, we've tried and enjoyed the sausage, pepperoni, peach and prosciutto special, pistachio and tartufo. He was at this place at random with another friend of ours many months ago as well, and he told me he had an olive oil gelato and that it was okay. The place has a great vibe that is very fitting for this part of gentrified South Street now. Great place to go for regular dining with friends, celebrations, or dates. The one nice mgr got me seated and I asked for drink recommendations and got some lavender color drink which was too sweet for me lol. The server recommended the spinach pizza which I added pepperoni which was good but should have went with something else since I was really looking at the Tarfulo or Quattro Formaggi.
