After a long day at the beach, our hungry party scoured through Yelp for our next feast. PJs was the first result with a high rating, and our stomachs immediately said YESSIR when looking at the menu. We quickly drove over and found a place to sit outside and ordered our beautiful New Jersey mix of seafood and lobster Mac and cheese. The meal took a while to be made (~40 minutes), but the restaurant was completely backed up with orders. Now, this godly meal of crab, shrimp, corn, mussels, clams, scallops, and much more was a delicious mixture. We did ask for Cajun spice and butter, but neither was added. But we didn't care, we kept digging in and devoured the meal like bears coming out of hibernation. The lobster mac and cheese could have been a bit more crispier, but was just as quickly consumed. With our BYO drinks, I felt as if I was living a teenage dream in a young adult novel. Absolute perfect new restaurant for the shore! While there was no wait when we ordered I imagine as people find out about this place it will get very popular. It's the perfect take out meal for groups to have a fun shared meal without needing to take individual orders. We ordered the family size which said it fed 4-6 adults. It was the exact right amount for the 4 of us, so if we had 6 I'd recommend getting 1-2 sides with it. We opted for the corn bread which was the best I've ever had - very moist, flavorful and pieces of corn in it. The potatoes, corn, sausage, clams and mussels were cooked amazing. Potatoes were soft without crumbling in the broth. The biggest issue was the shrimp and crab. My family loves crab and they were on the smaller side and a bit over cooked. The more offensive issue was the shrimp. It was completely over cooked that it was not enjoyable to eat. The entire pan was covered when we picked it up and I think the shrimp and crab continued steaming on the ride home. We kept it covered a bit once we got home. Next time I think we'd open up the tray as soon as we get home to stop it from cooking. When we were finished the bucket there was this amazing broth from the garlic butter lemon sauce - it was a light, thin sauce similar to what you'd see in a mussel dish. Firstly, we were greeted by PJ himself and that interaction alone was worth the visit, he had such a positive energy throughout each exchange. Next, the menu is set up in a clear, concise, and organized manner which made it convenient for checking price and deciding what to order. They also allow you to swap certain foods in the boil if u preferred double the serving of something in particular. After ordering, the wait was a little longer than anticipated, however, wasn't a huge deal. Finally, the food was delicious. Nothing was too seasoned (yes that's possible) or under-seasoned and still allowed the seafood's natural flavor to shine through which I personally prefer. Stumbled upon this place but we are so glad that we did. We sat at one of the only indoor tables to get out of the heat and were greeted by PJ. Boy is he a hoot! Our lunch felt like it was dining with a side of comedy. PJ did a great job explaining the menu to us and also all of the awards that his food has been nominated for. It is an open kitchen concept so we could see the staff and everyone preparing the food. Everyone was joking around and it seemed like a really well run establishment and a great environment to work in. Everything that we had was AMAZING! The soups, boils, crabcakes and fried shrimp. This was one of the best and most affordable seafood meals I have had in quite sometime. An added bonus was when they started playing the soundtrack to Hamilton. Homestyle shore seafood. Great time, great evening, great place. PJs is not large, maybe a dozen seats inside with 6 tables outside, so a reservation is advised. They have plans to expand to over 100 seats just down the block shortly. The experience is like going to a friend's shore home and your friend has several great seafood boil recipies. It doesn't look like much when you pass by but once you enter, this establishment feels homey and familiar. There's a bunch of seafood restaurants in the area but not as unique as PJ Buckets. This place prides itself with family style shellfish boils. There are plenty of blends to choose from. Each boil consists of 5 seafoods, corn, potatoes, onions and cornbread or AC roll with choices you can choose from the menu or even customize! We ordered the New England which is light on the seasoning so you can better taste the shellfish. The double easily feeds 3 people and even with some left overs. I really liked the fun concept of this but I just wished the seafood was a little less cooked. Ours was a bit dry. In addition, I wish they supplied a side of hot butter. Shellfish needs to be dunked in butter. Aside from the food, the staff is extremely nice and makes me feel very welcomed!
